This paper demonstrates a simple, yet powerful method to automatically identify the aesthetic visual style that lies in Dunhuang murals. Based on the art knowledge on Dunhuang murals, the method explicitly predicts some of possible image attributes that a human might use to understand the aesthetic visual style of a mural. These cues fall into three broad types: ① composition attributes related to mural layout or configuration; ② color attributes related to color types depicted; ③ brightness attributes related to bright conditions. We show that a classifier trained on these attributes can provide an efficient way to predict the aesthetic visual style of Dunhuang murals. 展开更多

Correlating fluency theory-based visual aesthetic liking of landscape with landscape types and features

People inherently assess landscapes by creating spontaneous aesthetic liking judgments based on the surrounding stimuli.To understand these judgements objectively,use may be made of the fluency theory of aesthetic pleasure(the psychological processes through which people experience beauty).This study aims to predict people’s visual aesthetic preferences based on fluency theory and to correlate these preferences with landscape types and features.An ordinary least squares(OLS)regression model was developed to predict visual aesthetic liking,using image statistics as explanatory variables.We determined types of landscape using Landscape Character Assessment(LCA)and applied viewshed analyses distinguishing between near,medium,and far zones.We identified landscape features by content analysis making use of machine learning-based image recognition supplied by Google Cloud Vision API.The results show that vegetation and geological forms were the most significant features for people’s visual aesthetic liking,followed by waterscapes and built structures/human settlements.The viewshed analyses indicated that‘medium-altitude,low-gradient artificial areas’were visible in photographs with high aesthetic visual liking in all zones(i.e.,at all distances).When the photographs showing this type of landscape are examined,the artificial areas in the photographs turn out to consist mostly of historical buildings or remains.This finding suggests that historical sites are not just important for their cultural value,but for their visual aesthetic value as well. 展开更多

The study explored surrealist aesthetic philosophies in relation with referential postmodern architecture,and landscape architecture,to communicate meaning with the audience.These philosophies provide lessons about the potential of the built environment to address the emotional and psychological needs of the public,that is,to address the vital social,ecological,and functional needs of modern society.According to this,the purpose of the study was two-fold.The first is to analyze the visual techniques and forms that are used in referential postmodern architecture and landscape architecture in relation with surrealist aesthetic philosophies,to communicate meaning with the audience.Second is to demonstrate the relevance of these visual theories,to enhance contemporary design practices.The study emphasized the potential of art forms that provide meaning to address the physiological and spiritual needs of the society.Hence,it re-established landscape architecture as an art form capable of enriching human psychological and spiritual well-being,which is opposed to the conservative utilitarian natures of the field. 展开更多

As one of the most popular visual programming languages,Scratch has a lot of evaluation around it.Reasonable evaluation can help programmers understand their projects better.At the same time,it can also provide a reference for them to browse other projects in the online community.Most of the existing evaluations on Scratch are carried from three perspectives:Computational Thinking(CT)ability,visual presentation aesthetics,and code quality.Among them,the assessment of CT and code quality is mainly carried out from the program script,while the evaluation of visual aesthetics is analyzed from the perspective of image sequences generated by project execution.The single-view evaluation focuses on the performance of a program in a certain aspect and is one-sided.In this paper,we propose a multi-view evaluation framework to integrate various evaluations using different policies.We quantitatively analyze the assessment of different views driven by data.Combined with overall evaluations that represent human opinions,we analyze their differences and connections.Through experiments,we determine the weights of different integration policies,the proposed multi-view evaluation method can generate evaluation results similar to human opinions. 展开更多
