This study investigated soil fertility based on soil chemistry and biological properties of organic vegetable farms in Sariaya, Quezon Province and Los Baños, Laguna Province, with the aim of developing organic agriculture in the Philippines. We utilized the SOFIX (Soil Fertility Index) technology, which is designed to evaluate soil fertility by focusing on the activity and diversity of microbial communities in the soil. This technology provides a scientific assessment of soil health, aiming to contribute to sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation. Soil fertility parameters from four different farms cultivating outdoor organic vegetables were below the recommended values for organic production. Essential macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and total carbon content, which is indicative of soil organic matter, were insufficient. Bacterial biomass for soil organic matter decomposition, and nitrogen and phosphorus circulation was inadequate. These results indicated that organic plots lack the fertility needed for optimal organic crop growth. The poor fertility of these organic plots could be attributed to their recent shift from conventional cultivation, which used synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers, to organic cultivation approximately seven years ago. This shift may harm soil microorganisms, leading to decreased fertility, nutrient availability and hindering the ability to sustain organic production. Overall, the findings of this case study emphasize the significant soil fertility challenges on organic vegetable farms. Therefore, farmers and agricultural practitioners must adopt appropriate soil management practices to improve soil fertility, microbial populations, nutrient availability, and overall soil health for successful organic production.展开更多

These oils also contribute to organoleptic quality of their products’ derivatives. However, their chemical and physical properties can be modified by the mode of their extraction, storage and distribution. These modifications might negatively affect the nutritional quality of the oils. The goals of this study were to: sample different vegetable oils for cosmetic or dietary use marketed in Cameroon, and verify purity and oxidation states of each kind of oil through determination of its acidity, iodine, peroxide, saponification, refractive indexes and the conformity of the labeling. The carotene content, the level of polar components and specific absorbance were also determined. As the result, six oils namely palm, palm kernel, coconut, black cumin, peanut and shea butter were collected. Apart from labeling, chemicals and physicals parameters analyzed were generally in accordance with the Cameroonian and Codex Alimentarius standard. This study suggests that vegetable oils sampled in the Cameroonian market may not expose consumers to lipid oxidation products generating pathological oxidative stress and inflammation. However, efforts in application of existing standard need to be done as far as labeling are concerned.展开更多

文摘For internal combustion engines, engines installed for transport ships, cargo ships, and fishing vessels are mainly diesel engines. The number of engines is increasing due to the development of the maritime and seafood exploitation sectors. Therefore, the high demand for petroleum fuels increases environmental pollution due to engine emissions.Reducing environmental pollution from the combustion of petroleum fuels has become a concern worldwide, especially for internal combustion engines. The exhaust gases from the engine contain harmful substances such as soot and nitrogen oxides(NO_(x)).Fuels with higher carbon content generate more soot when burned. In contrast, biofuels have low carbon and sulfur content and supply ample oxygen, which helps to reduce soot formation. For these reasons, biofuels are encouraged as alternative fuels to petroleum.Vegetable oil is one of the primary raw materials for biofuel production. This study presents a mixture of diesel and vegetable oil utilized as fuel for fishing vessels’diesel engines. The results of experimental research on a fishing vessel’s 4CHE Yanmar diesel engine when using diesel fuel mixed with coconut oil(B15,15%coconut oil,and 85%diesel)show that increasing B15 fuel injection pressure by about 10–15%compared with diesel fuel injection pressure reduces the engine’s soot emissions and increases power compared to unadjusted. This solution contributes to reducing environmental pollution from engine emissions.

文摘Cruciferous vegetables are important edible vegetable crops. However, they are susceptible to various pests during their growth process, which requires real-time and accurate monitoring of these pests for pest forecasting and scientific control.Hanging yellow sticky boards is a common way to monitor and trap those pests which are attracted to the yellow color. To achieve real-time,low-cost,intelligent monitoring of these vegetable pests on the boards,we established an intelligent monitoring system consisting of a smart camera,a web platform and a pest detection algorithm deployed on a server. After the operator sets the monitoring preset points and shooting time of the camera on the system platform, the camera in the field can automatically collect images of multiple yellow sticky boards at fixed places and times every day.The pests trapped on the yellow sticky boards in vegetable fields,Plutella xylostella,Phyllotreta striolata and flies, are very small and susceptible to deterioration and breakage, which increases the difficulty of model detection. To solve the problem of poor recognition due to the small size and breaking of the pest bodies,we propose an intelligent pest detection algorithm based on an improved Cascade R-CNN model for three important cruciferous crop pests. The algorithm uses an overlapping sliding window method,an improved Res2Net network as the backbone network, and a recursive feature pyramid network as the neck network. The results of field tests show that the algorithm achieves good detection results for the three target pests on the yellow sticky board images, with precision levels of 96.5,92.2 and 75.0%,and recall levels of 96.6,93.1 and 74.7%,respectively,and an F_(1) value of 0.880.Compared with other algorithms, our algorithm has a significant advantage in its ability to detect small target pests. To accurately obtain the data for the newly added pests each day,a two-stage pest matching algorithm was proposed. The algorithm performed well and achieved results that were highly consistent with manual counting, with a mean error of only 2.2%.This intelligent monitoring system realizes precision, good visualization, and intelligent vegetable pest monitoring, which is of great significance as it provides an effective pest prevention and control option for farmers.

文摘Controlled-release/stable nitrogen(N)fertilizers can improve vegetable yields and achieve lower greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in cost-effective and environmentally friendly vegetable production. However, there has been limited research on the controlled-release/stable N fertilization in long-term fixed-position vegetable rotation fields. In this study,a five-year field experiment was conducted to examine the effects of long-term controlled-release/stable N fertilization in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing lettuce yield.Six distinct treatments were employed for N fertilization:the control without N fertilizer(CK),normal local farming practices with application of urea fertilizer at 400 kg N ha^(-1)(T1),optimized application of urea at 320 kg N ha^(-1)(T2),optimized application of urea at 320 kg N ha^(-1)with supplementation of 1.0 kg ha^(-1)3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate(DMPP)as N inhibitor(T3),application of polyurethane-coated urea at 320 kg N ha^(-1)(T4),and application of polyurethane-coated urea at 320 kg N ha^(-1)with supplementation of 1.0 kg ha^(-1)DMPP(T5).The results showed that the T3,T4,and T5 treatments using controlled-release/stable N fertilization emitted about 12.2%-56.7%less average annual cumulative nitrous oxide(N_(2)O)and 1.31%-10.0%less carbon dioxide(CO_(2))than the T2 treatment.Nitrous oxide and CO_(2)emissions from the T4 and T5 treatments were considerably lower than those from the T3 treatment. No significant seasonal or interannual variability was observed in N_(2)O and CO_(2)emissions.The observed phenomena were attributed to the fluctuations in soil ammonium-and nitrate-N contents. The findings in this study revealed that long-term controlled-release/stable N fertilization resulted in reduced field N loss, benefitting vegetable yields without increasing CO_(2)emissions and highlighting the application potential of this technique for sustainable agricultural production.

文摘Organic agriculture is gaining momentum in the Philippines as consumers become more health- and environment-conscious. Therefore, farmers and agricultural practitioners must adopt appropriate soil management practices to improve soil fertility, microbial populations, nutrient availability, and overall soil health for successful organic production.

文摘Partial substitution of inorganic fertilizers with organic amendments is an important agricultural management practice. An 11-year field experiment(22 cropping periods)was carried out to analyze the impacts of different partial substitution treatments on crop yields and the transformation of nitrogen fractions in greenhouse vegetable soil.Four treatments with equal N,P_(2)O_(5),and K_(2)O inputs were selected, including complete inorganic fertilizer N(CN),50%inorganic fertilizer N plus 50%pig manure N(CPN),50%inorganic fertilizer N plus 25%pig manure N and 25%corn straw N(CPSN),and 50%inorganic fertilizer N plus 50%corn straw N(CSN).Organic substitution treatments tended to increase crop yields since the 6th cropping period compared to the CN treatment. From the 8th to the 22nd cropping periods, the highest yields were observed in the CPSN treatment where yields were 7.5-11.1%greater than in CN treatment. After 11-year fertilization, compared to CN,organic substitution treatments significantly increased the concentrations of NO_(3)^(-)-N,NH_(4)^(+)-N,acid hydrolysis ammonium-N(AHAN),amino acid-N(AAN),amino sugar-N(ASN),and acid hydrolysis unknown-N(AHUN)in soil by 45.0-69.4,32.8-58.1,49.3-66.6,62.0-69.5,34.5-100.3,and 109.2-172.9%,respectively.Redundancy analysis indicated that soil C/N and OC concentration significantly affected the distribution of N fractions. The highest concentrations of NO_(3)^(-)-N,AHAN,AAN,AHUN were found in the CPSN treatment.Organic substitution treatments increased the activities ofβ-glucosidase,β-cellobiosidase,N-acetyl-glucosamidase,L-aminopeptidase,and phosphatase in the soil.Organic substitution treatments reduced vector length and increased vector angle, indicating alleviation of constraints of C and N on soil microorganisms.Organic substitution treatments increased the total concentrations of phospholipid fatty acids(PLFAs)in the soil by 109.9-205.3%,and increased the relative abundance of G^(+)bacteria and fungi taxa, but decreased the relative abundance of G-bacteria,total bacteria, and actinomycetes.Overall,long-term organic substitution management increased soil OC concentration,C/N,and the microbial population, the latter in turn positively influenced soil enzyme activity.Enhanced microorganism numbers and enzyme activity enhanced soil N sequestration by transforming inorganic N to acid hydrolysis-N(AHN),and enhanced soil N supply capacity by activating non-acid hydrolysis-N(NAHN)to AHN,thus improving vegetable yield.Application of inorganic fertilizer, manure, and straw was a more effective fertilization model for achieving sustainable greenhouse vegetable production than application of inorganic fertilizer alone.

文摘Oil blending is the method of choice used worldwide to improve oxidative stability and nutritional value. There is no such edible oil/fat that meets all the recommendations from the health point of view. The fatty acid composition of vegetable oils decides the fate of the oil.Pure single oil is unable to provide a balanced amount of fatty acids(FAs)required/recommended on a daily intake basis.Blending oils/fats is an appropriate procedure of physically mixing multiple oils in suitable proportions which may provide functional lipids with improved antioxidant potential and desirable physical and chemical properties. This review piled up the accessible data on the blending of diverse oils/fats in the combination of binary, ternary, quaternary,or other types of oils into a single blended oil.Blending can be found very convincing towards appropriate FA profile, enhancement in physicochemical characteristics, and augmented stability for the period of storage or when used as cooking/frying processes which could ultimately serve as an effectual dietary intervention towards the health protectiveness.

文摘Promoting the green transformation of agricultural clusters represents an effective strategy to address pressing issues related to agricultural resources and environmental concerns. However, existing literature provides limited insights into the internal mechanisms and pathways for achieving green transformation of agricultural clusters. To address the challenges in international research on the collaborative green transformation of entire agricultural value chains,a theoretical analysis framework is constructed in this study, which is characterized by“point-line-plane three-layer embeddedness and four-force interaction,”positioning green innovation as a pivotal entry point.Through social network analysis, this study examines the processes and mechanisms underlying the collaborative green transformation of agricultural clusters and proposes viable pathways for implementation using the Shouguang vegetable industrial cluster as a case study. The research findings are as follows:(1)The green transformation of agricultural clusters includes the green transformation of cluster behavior actors(point),formation of a green innovation network(line),construction of a green environment(plane),and embedded integration and coordinated transformation of the three.Green innovations generated by leading enterprises, universities, and research institutions serve as the foundation for this transformation, whereas farmers'adoption of these innovations forms the basis, and government policies provide regulatory environment to ensure successful implementation. The transformation is realized through green collaborative innovation and governance, achieving the“three-layer embeddedness.”(2)Under the influence of four driving forces,namely,market-driven mechanisms, environmental regulations, green innovation, and multidimensional proximity, actors at various levels form and embed green innovation networks that are integrated into regional environments through institutional constraints. This results in a“five-in-one”system of collaborative green innovation and governance encompassing enterprises, industries, technologies, institutions, and spatial dimensions, which constitute the internal mechanisms for the green transformation and upgrading of agricultural clusters.(3)Building on the“three-layer and four-force”framework,this study proposes pathways for achieving the green transformation of agricultural clusters, thereby providing theoretical insights and policy recommendations for developing countries to foster green agricultural clusters and enhance their agricultural sectors'international competitiveness.

文摘Vegetable oils are a source of energy, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins useful for human health care and development. However, efforts in application of existing standard need to be done as far as labeling are concerned.
