A multi-viewpoint spectrum paradigm for inter-actor relationship analysis in non-social textual corpora:The case of the UN General Debate Corpus

Purpose:This paper presents a new semi-automatic methodology for identifying inter-actor relationships by discerning viewpoints in non-social,political textual corpora.Although previous research has successfully discerned viewpoints,biases,and affiliations based on textual features,the task of relationship analysis in the absence of interactional data remains unaddressed.Design/methodology/approach:We introduce a new paradigm for topic representation as a dynamic,continuous,multi-viewpoint spectrum based on the representation of viewpoints as vectors that capture common topical themes.As a proof of concept,we applied this paradigm to scrutinize the inter-state relationships reflected in the speeches of the UN General Assembly Debate Corpus(UNGDC).Findings:The proposed paradigm effectively identifies discursive trends in UNGDC.Our analysis reveals common attitudes towards the topic and their prominence among different groups of actors and facilitates the analysis of relationships between actors through a quantitative representation of viewpoint similarity.The method also successfully captured temporal shifts in viewpoints and overall discourse trends,correlating with major geopolitical events.Research limitations:One limitation of this study is the method’s sensitivity to data sparsity,which can skew viewpoint representations in cases of low topic involvement.Practical implications:The proposed paradigm can be utilized by scholars in political science and other domains as a tool for semi-automated unsupervised textual analysis of various non-social textual sources,enabling the discovery of latent relationships between actors and the modeling of viewpoints in complex topics.Originality/value:This study presents a novel framework for unsupervised semi-automatic textual analysis of relationships in non-social corpora through a new approach for the representation of viewpoints as thematic vectors. 展开更多

This paper presents a novel movement planning algorithm for a guard robot in an indoor environment, imitating the job of human security. A movement planner is employed by the guard robot to continuously observe a certain person. This problem can be distinguished from the person following problem which continuously follows the object. Instead, the movement planner aims to reduce the movement and the energy while keeping the target person under its visibility. The proposed algorithm exploits the topological features of the environment to obtain a set of viewpoint candidates, and it is then optimized by a cost-based set covering problem. Both the robot and the target person are modeled using geodesic motion model which considers the environment shape. Subsequently, a particle model-based planner is employed, considering the chance constraints over the robot visibility, to choose an optimal action for the robot. Simulation results using 3D simulator and experiments on a real environment are provided to show the feasibility and effectiveness of our algorithm. 展开更多

This paper proposes an automatic model-based viewpoint planning method, which can achieve high precision and high efficiency for freeform surfaces inspection using plane structured light scanners. The surface model is utilized in stereolithography format, which is widely used as an industrial standard. The proposed method consists of 4 steps: topology reconstruction, mesh refinement, scan direction determination and viewpoint generation. In the first step, the topology structure of the surface model is reconstructed according to a designed data structure, based on which a neighborhood search algorithm is developed. In the second step, big facets in the surface model are segmented into several small ones, which are suitable for viewpoint planning. In the third step, an initial scan region of a viewpoint is grouped by the neighborhood search algorithm combining with total area and normal vector restrictions. Accordingly, the scan direction is determined by the normal vectors of facets in the initial scan region. In the fourth step, the position, the orientation, and the final scan region of the viewpoint are determined by 4 scan constraints, i.e., field of view, working distance range, view angle and overlap. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method. 展开更多

Space object recognition plays an important role in spatial exploitation and surveillance, followed by two main problems: lacking of data and drastic changes in viewpoints. In this article, firstly, we build a three-dimensional (3D) satellites dataset named BUAA Satellite Image Dataset (BUAA-SID 1.0) to supply data for 3D space object research. Then, based on the dataset, we propose to recognize full-viewpoint 3D space objects based on kernel locality preserving projections (KLPP). To obtain more accurate and separable description of the objects, firstly, we build feature vectors employing moment invariants, Fourier descriptors, region covariance and histogram of oriented gradients. Then, we map the features into kernel space followed by dimensionality reduction using KLPP to obtain the submanifold of the features. At last, k-nearest neighbor (kNN) is used to accomplish the classification. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is more appropriate for space object recognition mainly considering changes of viewpoints. Encouraging recognition rate could be obtained based on images in BUAA-SID 1.0, and the highest recognition result could achieve 95.87%. 展开更多

The concept of temporal state variables is introduced into Z. Then new implementation relations are defined and new refinement relations are deduced, mainly for temporal state variables to process temporal relationships of operations. Multiple viewpoints oriented requirements method (MVORM) is a new method for resolving these problems. This paper develops two generic formal frameworks of MVORM, framework based on refinement relation (FBRR) and framework based on implementation relation (FBIR). They are generic, because no assumptions are made about the development process or the formal description languages to be used. Three kinds of specification relations and three kinds of specification transformations are discussed over FBIR and FBRR. This paper also compares the equivalence between FBIR and FBRR. We point out that an equivalent FBIR can be found for any FBRR, but reverse transformation is not always possible. We think FBIR is better than FBRR on most cases. 展开更多

Viewpoint Manipulation for Interactive Television by Using Human Pose Estimation

In current interactive television schemes, the viewpoints should be manipulated by the user. However, there is no efficient method, to assist a user in automatically identifying and tracking the optimum viewpoint when the user observes the object of interest because many objects, most often humans, move rapidly and frequently. This paper proposes a novel framework for determining and tracking the virtual camera to best capture the front of the person of interest (PoI). First, one PoI is interactively chosen in a segmented 3D scene reconstructed by space carving method. Second, key points of the human torso of the PoI are detected by using a model-based method and the human's global motion including rotation and translation is estimated by using a close-formed method with 3 corresponding points. At the last step, the front direction of PoI is tracked temporally by using the unscented particle filter (UPF). Experimental results show that the method can properly compute the front direction of the PoI and robustly track the best viewpoints. 展开更多
