In the Prognostics and Health Management(PHM),remaining useful life(RUL)is very important and utilized to ensure the reliability and safety of the operation of complex mechanical systems.Recently,unscented Kalman filtering(UKF)has been applied widely in the RUL estimation.For a degradation system,the relationship between its monitored measurements and its degradation states is assumed to be nonlinear in the conventional UKF.However,in some special degradation systems,their monitored measurements have a linear relation with their degradation states.For these special problems,it may bring estimation errors to use the UKF method directly.Besides,many uncertain factors can result in the fluctuations of the estimated results,which may have a bad influence on the RUL estimation method.As a result,a robust RUL estimation approach is proposed in this paper to reduce the errors and randomness of estimation results for this kind of degradation problems.Firstly,an improved unscented Kalman filtering is established utilizing the Kalman filtering(KF)method and a linear adaptive strategy.The linear adaptive strategy is used to adjust its noise term adaptively.Then,the robust RUL estimation is realized by the improved UKF.At last,three problems are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多

The catalytic activity of cation exchange resins will be continuously reduced with its use time in a condensation reaction for bisphenol A(BPA).For online estimation of the catalytic activity,a catalytic deactivation model is studied for a production plant of BPA,state equation and observation equation are proposed based on the axial temperature distribution of the reactor and the acetone concentration at reactor entrance.A hybrid model of state equation is constructed for improving estimation precision.The unknown parameters in observation equation are calculated with sample data.The unscented Kalman filtering algorithm is then used for on-line estimation of the catalytic activity.The simulation results show that this hybrid model has higher estimation accuracy than the mechanism model and the model is effective for production process of BPA. 展开更多

Aimed at low accuracy of attitude determination because of using low-cost components which may result in non-linearity in integrated attitude determination systems, a novel attitude determination algorithm using vector observations and gyro measurements is presented. The various features of the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and optimal-REQUEST (quaternion estimator) algorithms are introduced for attitude determination. An interlaced filtering method is presented for the attitude determination of nano-spacecraft by setting the quaternion as the attitude representation, using the UKF and optimal-REQUEST to estimate the gyro drifts and the quaternion, respectively. The optimal-REQUEST and UKF are not isolated from each other. When the optimal-REQUEST algorithm estimates the attitude quaternion, the gyro drifts are estimated by the UKF algorithm synchronously by using the estimated attitude quaternion. Furthermore, the speed of attitude determination is improved by setting the state dimension to three. Experimental results show that the presented method has higher performance in attitude determination compared to the UKF algorithm and the traditional interlaced filtering method and can estimate the gyro drifts quickly. 展开更多

This paper presents an enhanced multi-baseline phase unwrapping algorithm by combining an unscented Kalman filter with an enhanced joint phase gradient estimator based on the amended matrix pencil model, and an optimal path-following strategy based on phase quality estimate function. The enhanced joint phase gradient estimator can accurately and effectively extract the phase gradient information of wrapped pixels from noisy interferograms, which greatly increases the performances of the proposed method. The optimal path-following strategy ensures that the proposed algorithm simultaneously performs noise suppression and phase unwrapping along the pixels with high-reliance to the pixels with low-reliance. Accordingly, the proposed algorithm can be predicted to obtain better results, with respect to some other algorithms, as will be demonstrated by the results obtained from synthetic data. 展开更多

Aiming at the adverse effect caused by limited detecting probability of sensors on filtering preci- sion of a nonlinear system state, a novel muhi-sensor federated unscented Kalman filtering algorithm is proposed. Firstly, combined with the residual detection strategy, effective observations are cor- rectly identified. Secondly, according to the missing characteristic of observations and the structural feature of unscented Kalman filter, the iterative process of the single-sensor unscented Kalman filter in intermittent observations is given. The key idea is that the state estimation and its error covariance matrix are replaced by the state one-step prediction and its error covariance matrix, when the phe- nomenon of observations missing occurs. Finally, based on the realization mechanism of federated filter, a new fusion framework of state estimation from each local node is designed. And the filtering precision of system state is improved further by the effective management of observations missing and the rational utilization of redundancy and complementary information among multi-sensor observa- tions. The theory analysis and simulation results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the pro- posed algorithm. 展开更多

The unscented Kalman filter(UKF)has four implementations in the additive noise case,according to whether the state is augmented with noise vectors and whether a new set of sigma points is redrawn from the predicted state(which is so-called resampling)for the observation prediction.This paper concerns the differences of performances for those implementations,such as accuracy,adaptability,computational complexity,etc.The conditionally equivalent relationships between the augmented and non-augmented unscented transforms(UTs)are proved for several sampling strategies that are commonly used.Then,we find that the augmented and non-augmented UKFs have the same filter results with the additive measurement noise,but only have the same state predictions with the additive process noise.Resampling is not believed to be necessary in some researches.However,we find out that resampling can be helpful for an adaptive Kalman gain.This will improve the convergence and accuracy of the filter when the large scale state modeling bias or unknown maneuvers occur.Finally,some universal designing principles for a practical UKF are given as follows:1)for the additive observation noise case,it's better to use the non-augmented UKF;2)for the additive process noise case,when the small state modeling bias or maneuvers are involved,the non-resampling algorithms with state whether augmented or not are candidates for filters;3)the resampling and non-augmented algorithm is the only choice while the large state modeling bias or maneuvers are latent. 展开更多

This paper presents a new phase unwrapping algorithm based on the unscented Kalman filter(UKF) for synthetic aperture radar(SAR) interferometry.This method is the result of combining an UKF with path-following strategy and an omni-directional local phase slope estimator.This technique performs simultaneously noise filtering and phase unwrapping along the high-quality region to the low-quality region,which is also able to avoid going directly through the noisy regions.In addition,phase slope is estimated directly from the sample frequency spectrum of the complex interferogram,by which the underestimation of phase slope is overcome.Simulation and real data processing results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method,and show a significant improvement with respect to the extended Kalman filtering(EKF) algorithm and some conventional phase unwrapping algorithms in some situations. 展开更多

Fault detection in industrial robot drive systems is a critical aspect of ensuring operational reliability and efficiency.To address the challenge of balancing accuracy and robustness in existing fault detection methods,this paper proposes an enhanced fault detection method based on the unscented Kalman filter(UKF).A comprehensive mathematical model of the brushless DC motor drive system is developed to provide a theoretical foundation for the design of subsequent fault detection methods.The conventional UKF estimation process is detailed,and its limitations in balancing estimation accuracy and robustness are addressed by introducing a dynamic,time-varying boundary layer.To further enhance detection performance,the method incorporates residual analysis using improved z-score and signal-tonoise ratio(SNR)metrics.Numerical simulations under both fault-free and faulty conditions demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves lower root mean square error(RMSE)in fault-free scenarios and provides reliable fault detection.These results highlight the potential of the proposed method to enhance the reliability and robustness of fault detection in industrial robot drive systems. 展开更多

In this paper,an algorithm on measurement noise with adaptive strong tracking unscented Kalman filter(ASTUKF)is advanced to improve the precision of pose estimation and the stability for data computation.To suppress high-frequency noise,an infinite impulse response filter(IIRF)is introduced at the front end of ASTUKF to preprocess the original data.Then the covariance matrix of the error is corrected and the measurement noise is estimated in the process of filtering.After that,the data from the experiment were tested on the hardware experiment platform.The experimental results show that compared to the traditional extended Kalman filter(EKF)and unscented Kalman filter(UKF)algorithms,the root mean square error(RMSE)of the roll axis results from the algorithm proposed in this paper is respectively reduced by approximately 57.5%and 36.1%;the RMSE of the pitch axis results decreases by nearly 58.4%and 51.5%,respectively;and the RMSE of the yaw axis results decreases almost 62.8%and 50.9%,correspondingly.The above results indicate that the algorithm enhances the ability of resisting high-frequency vibration interference and improves the accuracy of attitude solution. 展开更多

The tire-road friction coefficient(TRFC)plays a critical role in vehicle safety and dynamic stability,with model-based approaches being the primary method for TRFC estimation.However,the accuracy of these methods is often constrained by the complexity of tire force expressions and uncertainties in tire model parameters,particularly under diverse and complex driving conditions.To address these challenges,this paper proposes a novel data enforced unscented Kalman filter(DeUKF)approach for precise TRFC estimation in intelligent chassis systems.First,an Unscented Kalman Filter is constructed using a nominal tire model-based vehicle dynamics formulation.Then,leveraging Willems’Fundamental Lemma and historical real-world driving data,the vehicle dynamics model is adap-tively corrected within the Unscented Kalman Filter framework.This correction effectively mitigates the adverse effects of tire model uncertainties,thereby enhancing TRFC estimation accuracy.Finally,real vehicle experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method. 展开更多

A motion filtering method is proposed in this paper, which takes into consideration the existence of certain system constraints with respect to the amount of the corrective rotational and translational motions that can be applied on each video frame for stabilization. The interdependence between rotational and translational constraints is considered, and a constraint unscented Kalman filter (CUKF) algorithm is utilized to achieve a smoothly stabilized motion. The method is applied to stabilize each video frame, and the results reveal that the proposed approach improves the stabilization performance in comparison with the trivial approach. 展开更多

Accurate estimation of the State of Charge(SOC),State of Health(SOH),and Terminal Resistance(TR)is crucial for the effective operation of Battery Management Systems(BMS)in lithium-ion batteries.This study conducts a comprehensive comparative analysis of four Kalman filter variants Extended Kalman Filter(EKF),Extended Kalman-Bucy Filter(EKBF),Unscented Kalman Filter(UKF),and Unscented Kalman-Bucy Filter(UKBF)under varying battery parameter conditions.These include temperature fluctuation,self-discharge,current direction,cell capacity,process noise,and measurement noise.Our findings reveal significant variations in the performance of SOC and SOH predictions across filters,emphasizing that UKF demonstrates superior robustness to noise,while EKF performs better under accurate system dynamics.The study underscores the need for adaptive filtering strategies that can dynamically adjust to evolving battery parameters,thereby enhancing BMS reliability and extending battery lifespan. 展开更多

To improve the navigation accuracy of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), a novel terrain passive integrated navigation system (TPINS) is presented. According to the characteristics of the underwater environment and AUV navigation requirements of low cost and high accuracy, a novel TPINS is designed with a configuration of the strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS), the terrain reference navigation system (TRNS), the Doppler velocity sonar (DVS), the magnetic compass and the navigation computer utilizing the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to fuse the navigation information from various navigation sensors. Linear filter equations for the extended Kalman filter (EKF), nonlinear filter equations for the UKF and measurement equations of navigation sensors are addressed. It is indicated from the comparable simulation experiments of the EKF and the UKF that AUV navigation precision is improved substantially with the proposed sensors and the UKF when compared to the EKF. The TPINS designed with the proposed sensors and the UKF is effective in reducing AUV navigation position errors and improving the stability and precision of the AUV underwater integrated navigation. 展开更多

On-line estimation of unmeasurable biological variables is important in fermentation processes,directly influencing the optimal control performance of the fermentation system as well as the quality and yield of the targeted product.In this study,a novel strategy for state estimation of fed-batch fermentation process is proposed.By combining a simple and reliable mechanistic dynamic model with the sample-based regressive measurement model,a state space model is developed.An improved algorithm,swarm energy conservation particle swarm optimization(SECPSO) ,is presented for the parameter identification in the mechanistic model,and the support vector machines(SVM) method is adopted to establish the nonlinear measurement model.The unscented Kalman filter(UKF) is designed for the state space model to reduce the disturbances of the noises in the fermentation process.The proposed on-line estimation method is demonstrated by the simulation experiments of a penicillin fed-batch fermentation process. 展开更多

In every filter process, the estimated scale factor is used to update the state noise covariance Qk, and the improved filter gain is obtained in the filter process of unscented Kalman filter (UKF) via predicted variance Pk|k-1, which is similar to the standard Kalman filter. However, in every running step of the EKF the unscented transformation is running, the deterministic sample is caught by unscented transformation, then posterior mean of non- lineadty is caught by propagating, but the posterior covariance of nonlinearity is caught by linearizing. An adaptive unscented Kalman filter(AUKF)and an augmented state method are employed to estimate the timevarying parameters and states of a kind of nonlinear high-speed objects.A strong tracking filter is employed to improve the tracking ability and robustness of unscented Kalman filter(UKF)when the process noise is inaccuracy,and wavelet transform is used to improve the estimate accuracy by the variance of measurement noise.An augmented square-root framework is utilized to improve the numerical stability and accuracy of UKF.Monte Carlo simulations and applications in the rapid trajectory estimation of hypersonic artillery shells confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多

An airship model is made-up of aerostatic,aerodynamic,dynamic,and propulsive forces and torques.Besides others,the computation of aerodynamic forces and torques is difficult.Usually,wind tunnel experimentation and potential flow theory are used for their calculations.However,the limitations of these methods pose difficulties in their accurate calculation.In this work,an online estimation scheme based on unscented Kalman filter(UKF)is proposed for their calculation.The proposed method introduces six auxiliary states for the complete aerodynamic model.UKF uses an extended model and provides an estimate of a complete state vector along with auxiliary states.The proposed method uses the minimum auxiliary state variables for the approximation of the complete aerodynamic model that makes it computationally less intensive.UKF estimation performance is evaluated by developing a nonlinear simulation environment for University of Engineering and Technology,Taxila(UETT)airship.Estimator performance is validated by performing the error analysis based on estimation error and 2-σ uncertainty bound.For the same problem,the extended Kalman filter(EKF)is also implemented and its results are compared with UKF.The simulation results show that UKF successfully estimates the forces and torques due to the aerodynamic model with small estimation error and the comparative analysis with EKF shows that UKF improves the estimation results and also it is more suitable for the under-consideration problem. 展开更多
