This study looks at how professional interpreters handle linguistic uncertainty in English-Chinese sight translation, with a focus on the strategies they use. By analyzing transcription data alongside instructor evaluations, we found that interpreters relied most on creative interpretation and omission, while strategies like paraphrasing, simplification, transformation, addition, and generalization appeared less often. The results show a clear preference for strategies that keep communication flowing without adding unnecessary cognitive load. These findings support the Processing Economy Hypothesis, which suggests interpreters naturally seek efficient ways to process language while maintaining meaning. The study also highlights practical implications for interpreter training, emphasizing the value of flexible, economy-oriented strategies to help interpreters stay fluent under pressure.展开更多

However, cropland nitrate leaching estimates show great uncertainty due to variations in input datasets and estimation methods. Here, we presented a re-evaluation of Chinese cropland nitrate leaching, and identified and quantified the sources of uncertainty by integrating three cropland area datasets, three N input datasets, and three estimation methods. The results revealed that nitrate leaching from Chinese cropland averaged 6.7±0.6 Tg N yr^(-1)in 2010, ranging from 2.9 to 15.8 Tg N yr^(-1)across 27 different estimates. The primary contributor to the uncertainty was the estimation method, accounting for 45.1%, followed by the interaction of N input dataset and estimation method at 24.4%. The results of this study emphasize the need for adopting a robust estimation method and improving the compatibility between the estimation method and N input dataset to effectively reduce uncertainty. This analysis provides valuable insights for accurately estimating cropland nitrate leaching and contributes to ongoing efforts that address water pollution concerns.展开更多

We find that the entropic uncertainty can be controlled by the non-Markovian effect and the atom-cavity coupling. The results show that increasing the atom-cavity coupling can enlarge the oscillating frequencies of the entropic uncertainty and can decrease the minimal value of the entropic uncertainty. Enhancing the non-Markovian effect can reduce the minimal value of the entropic uncertainty. In particular, if the atom-cavity coupling or the non-Markovian effect is very strong, the entropic uncertainty will be very dose to zero at certain time points, thus Bob can minimize his uncertainty about Alice's measurement outcomes,展开更多

These findings support the Processing Economy Hypothesis, which suggests interpreters naturally seek efficient ways to process language while maintaining meaning. The study also highlights practical implications for interpreter training, emphasizing the value of flexible, economy-oriented strategies to help interpreters stay fluent under pressure.
文摘When assessing seismic liquefaction potential with data-driven models, addressing the uncertainties of establishing models, interpreting cone penetration tests(CPT)data and decision threshold is crucial for avoiding biased data selection, ameliorating overconfident models, and being flexible to varying practical objectives, especially when the training and testing data are not identically distributed.A workflow characterized by leveraging Bayesian methodology was proposed to address these issues.Employing a Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP)as the foundational model, this approach was benchmarked against empirical methods and advanced algorithms for its efficacy in simplicity, accuracy, and resistance to overfitting. The analysis revealed that, while MLP models optimized via maximum a posteriori algorithm suffices for straightforward scenarios,Bayesian neural networks showed great potential for preventing overfitting.Additionally, integrating decision thresholds through various evaluative principles offers insights for challenging decisions. Two case studies demonstrate the framework's capacity for nuanced interpretation of in situ data, employing a model committee for a detailed evaluation of liquefaction potential via Monte Carlo simulations and basic statistics.Overall, the proposed step-by-step workflow for analyzing seismic liquefaction incorporates multifold testing and real-world data validation, showing improved robustness against overfitting and greater versatility in addressing practical challenges. This research contributes to the seismic liquefaction assessment field by providing a structured, adaptable methodology for accurate and reliable analysis.

文摘Cropland nitrate leaching is the major nitrogen(N) loss pathway, and it contributes significantly to water pollution. This analysis provides valuable insights for accurately estimating cropland nitrate leaching and contributes to ongoing efforts that address water pollution concerns.

文摘Humans and animals have a fundamental ability to use experiences and environmental information to organize behavior. It often happens that humans and animals make decisions and prepare actions under uncertain situations.Uncertainty would significantly affect the state of animals’minds, but may not be reflected in behavior. How to“read animals’mind state”under different situations is a challenge. Here,we report that neuronal activity in the medial prefrontal cortex(mPFC)of rats can reflect the environmental uncertainty when the task situation changes from certain to uncertain.Rats were trained to perform behavioral tasks under certain and uncertain situations.Under certain situations, rats were required to simply repeat two nose-poking actions that each triggered short auditory tone feedback(single-task situation).Whereas under the uncertain situation, the feedback could randomly be either the previous tone or a short musical rhythm. No additional action was required upon the music feedback, and the same secondary nose-poking action was required upon the tone feedback(dual-task situation);therefore, the coming task was uncertain before action initiation. We recorded single-unit activity from the mPFC when the rats were performing the tasks. We found that in the dual task, when uncertainty was introduced, many mPFC neurons were actively engaged in dealing with the uncertainty before the task initiation, suggesting that the rats could be aware of the task situation change and encode the information in the mPFC before the action of task initiation.

文摘Generative adversarial network(GAN)models are widely used in mechanical designs. The aim in the airfoil shape design is to obtain shapes that exhibits the required aerodynamic performance, and conditional GAN is used for that aim. However, the output of GAN contains uncertainties.Additionally, the uncertainties of labels have not been quantified. This paper proposes an uncertainty quantification method to estimate the uncertainty of labels using Monte Carlo dropout. In addition,an uncertainty reduction method is proposed based on imbalanced training. The proposed method was evaluated for the airfoil generation task. The results indicated that the uncertainty was appropriately quantified and successfully reduced.
文摘Using the glucose and L-glutamic-acid to prepare the standard substance according to the ratio of 1:1, and the artificial seawater and the standard substance to prepare a series of standard solutions, the distribution pattern of uncertainty in measurement of seawater COD is obtained based on the measured results of the series of standard solutions by the potassium iodide-alkaline potassium permanganate determination method. The distribution pattern is as follows: Uncertainty in measurement is big and not constant at the high end, but small and constant at the low end.

文摘Numerical simulation of concrete-faced rockfill dams(CFRDs)considering the spatial variability of rockfill has become a popular research topic in recent years. In order to determine uncertain rockfill properties efficiently and reliably, this study developed an uncertainty inversion analysis method for rockfill material parameters using the stacking ensemble strategy and Jaya optimizer. The comprehensive implementation process of the proposed model was described with an illustrative CFRD example.First, the surrogate model method using the stacking ensemble algorithm was used to conduct the Monte Carlo stochastic finite element calculations with reduced computational cost and improved accuracy.Afterwards, the Jaya algorithm was used to inversely calculate the combination of the coefficient of variation of rockfill material parameters. This optimizer obtained higher accuracy and more significant uncertainty reduction than traditional optimizers.Overall, the developed model effectively identified the random parameters of rockfill materials. This study provided scientific references for uncertainty analysis of CFRDs.In addition, the proposed method can be applied to other similar engineering structures.
文摘Objective:To investigate the relationship between uncertainty in illness, mood state and coping style in patients with temporomandibular disorders(TMD)in the hospital,in order to identify nursing measures. Methods:Chinese versions of the Mishel Uncertainty In Illness Scale(MUIS),Brief Profile Of Mood States(BPOMS)and Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire(MCMQ)were used to assess uncertainty in illness, mood state and coping style, respectively,in 126 patients with TMD.Results:The total score of uncertainty in illness of the patients was 91.33±16.38,which was at middle level. The total score of mood state was 37.93±17.0.The order of coping style rated from high to low was confrontation(18.81±3.65),avoidance(15.44±4.26)and acceptance(10.41±5.04).Acceptance was positively correlated with uncertainty in illness(r=0.463,p<0.001),and mood state(r=0.187,p<0.05).Avoidance and confrontation were negatively correlated with uncertainty in illness and mood state(r=0.286,p<0.01),(r=0.175,p<0.05),(r=0.171,p<0.05),(r=0.221,p<0.01).Conclusions:Both uncertainty in illness and mood state were related to coping style. These data suggest that nurses should be trained to offer appropriate guidance to help decrease patients'uncertainty in illness and relieve their negative emotions.

文摘Based on the time-convolutionless master-equation approach, the entropic uncertainty in the presence of quantum memory is investigated for a two-atom system in two dissipative cavities. In particular, if the atom-cavity coupling or the non-Markovian effect is very strong, the entropic uncertainty will be very dose to zero at certain time points, thus Bob can minimize his uncertainty about Alice's measurement outcomes,

文摘Driven by the increase in CO_(2)concentration,climate models reach a consensus that the large-scale circulation of the South Asian summer monsoon(SASM) becomes weakened but with different magnitudes. This study investigates the major uncertainty sources of the SASM response to an abrupt quadrupling of CO_(2)(abrupt-4×CO_(2))in 18 models of phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. The projected weakening of the SASM indicated by both zonal and meridional monsoon circulation indices is closely linked to decreases in the meridional gradient of upper-tropospheric temperature between Eurasia and the Indian Ocean(EUTT-IUTT).A climate feedback-response analysis method is applied to linearly decompose the uncertainty of changes in EUTT-IUTT into the partial changes due to external forcing and internal processes of the earth-atmosphere column. Results show that the uncertainty of changes in EUTT-IUTT is contributed positively by the dominant atmospheric dynamic process, followed by the cloud shortwave radiative effect, and negatively by the surface latent heat flux and cloud longwave radiative effect.Contributions from CO_(2)forcing and other internal processes including albedo and water vapor feedbacks, oceanic heat storage, and sensible heat flux are found to be minor.

文摘This study investigates tail dependence among five major cryptocurrencies, namely Bitcoin,Ethereum,Litecoin,Ripple, and Bitcoin Cash, and uncertainties in the gold, oil, and equity markets.Using the cross-quantilogram method and quantile connectedness approach,we identify cross-quantile interdependence between the analyzed variables. Our results show that the spillover between cryptocurrencies and volatility indices for the major traditional markets varies substantially across quantiles, implying that diversification benefits for these assets may differ widely across normal and extreme market conditions.Under normal market conditions, the total connectedness index is moderate and falls below the elevated values observed under bearish and bullish market conditions. Moreover,we show that under all market conditions, cryptocurrencies have a leadership influence over the volatility indices. Our results have important policy implications for enhancing financial stability and deliver valuable insights for deploying volatility-based financial instruments that can potentially provide cryptocurrency investors with suitable hedges,as we show that cryptocurrency and volatility markets are insignificantly(weakly)connected under normal(extreme)market conditions.
文摘This study investigates the predictability of a fixed uncertainty index(UI)for realized variances(volatility)in the international stock markets from a high-frequency perspective. We construct a composite UI based on the scaled principal component analysis(s-PCA)method and demonstrate that it exhibits significant in-and out-of-sample predictabilities for realized variances in global stock markets. This predictive power is more powerful than those of two commonly employed competing methods, namely,PCA and the partial least squares(PLS)methods. The result is robust in several checks.Further,we explain that s-PCA outperforms other dimension-reduction methods since it can effectively increase the impacts of strong predictors and decrease those of weak factors. The implications of this research are significant for investors who allocate assets globally.
