Although it is well-known that under lateral loading the behavior and modes of failure of the frame buildings change significantly due to infill-frame interaction, the general design practice is to treat infills as nonstructural elements and their stiffness, strength and interaction with the frame is often ignored, primarily because of difficulties in simulation and lack of modeling guidelines in design codes. The Indian Standard, like many other national codes, does not provide explicit insight into the anticipated performance and associated vulnerability of infilled frames. This paper presents an analytical study on the seismic performance and fragility analysis of Indian code-designed RC frame buildings with and without URM infills. Infills are modeled as diagonal struts as per ASCE 41 guidelines and various modes of failure are considered. HAZUS methodology along with nonlinear static analysis is used to compare the seismic vulnerability of bare and infilled frames. The comparative study suggests that URM infills result in a significant increase in the seismic vulnerability of RC frames and their effect needs to be properly incorporated in design codes.展开更多

[Objectives]To explore the effects of heat clearing and stasis resolving method on prethrombotic state,inflammatory factors and T-lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood of unexplained recurrent miscarriage(URM)patient...[Objectives]To explore the effects of heat clearing and stasis resolving method on prethrombotic state,inflammatory factors and T-lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood of unexplained recurrent miscarriage(URM)patients with suppressed internal heat.[Methods]Thirty cases of URM patients with suppressed internal heat and 30 normal women were collected,and characteristics of changes in peripheral serum D-dimer(D-D),fibrin degradation product(FDP),fibrinogen(FIB),IL-6,IL-10 and TNF-α,CD,CD,CD,CD,CDlevels were detected.URM patients were treated with traditional Chinese medicine for clearing heat and resolving blood stasis for 3 menstrual cycles,and the changes of indicators before and after treatment were observed.[Results]Compared with normal women,the peripheral serum levels of D-D,IL-6,TNF-αand CDin URM patients with suppressed internal heat were increased(P<0.05),while the IL-10 lymphocyte level was significantly decreased(P<0.05);compared with that before treatment,the contents of D-D,IL-6,TNF-αand CDdecreased after 3 menstrual cycles(P<0.05),while the contents of IL-10 and CDT lymphocytes increased significantly(P<0.05).[Conclusions]The heat clearing heat and stasis resolving method can effectively improve the prethrombotic state of URM,and the action mechanism may be related to the regulation of immune and peripheral blood inflammatory factors.展开更多
The ubiquitin-related modifier Urm1 can be covalently conjugated to lysine residues of other proteins,such as yeast Ahp1 and human MOCS3,through a mechanism involving the E1-like protein Uba4(MOCS3 in humans).Similar ...The ubiquitin-related modifier Urm1 can be covalently conjugated to lysine residues of other proteins,such as yeast Ahp1 and human MOCS3,through a mechanism involving the E1-like protein Uba4(MOCS3 in humans).Similar to ubiquitination,urmylation requires a thioester intermediate and forms isopeptide bonds between Urm1 and its substrates.In addition,the urmylation process can be significantly enhanced by oxidative stress.Recent findings have demonstrated that Urm1 also acts as a sulfur carrier in the thiolation of eukaryotic tRNA via a mechanism that requires the formation of a thiocarboxylated Urm1.This role is very similar to that of prokaryotic sulfur carriers such as MoaD and ThiS.Evidence strongly supports the hypothesis that Urm1 is the molecular fossil in the evolutionary link between prokaryotic sulfur carriers and eukaryotic ubiquitin-like proteins.In the present review,we discuss the dual role of Urm1 in protein and tRNA modification.展开更多
To improve the seismic performance of unrein-forced masonry(URM)buildings in the Himalayan re-gions,including Western China,India,Nepal,and Paki-stan,a low-cost bonded scrap tire rubber isolator(BSTRI)is proposed,and ...To improve the seismic performance of unrein-forced masonry(URM)buildings in the Himalayan re-gions,including Western China,India,Nepal,and Paki-stan,a low-cost bonded scrap tire rubber isolator(BSTRI)is proposed,and a series of vertical compression and horizontal shear tests are conducted.Incremental dynamic analyses are conducted for five types of BSTRI-supported URM buildings subjected to 22 far-field and 28 near-field earthquake ground motions.The resulting fragility curves and probability of damage curves are presented and utilized to evaluate the damage states of these buildings.The results show that in the base-isolated(BI)URM buildings under seismic ground motion at a peak ground acceleration(PGA)of 1.102g,the probability of exceeding the collapse prevention threshold is less than 25%under far-field earthquake ground motions and 31%under near-field earthquake ground motions.Furthermore,the maximum average vulnerability index for the BI-URM buildings,which are designed to withstand rare earthquakes with 9°(PGA=0.632g),is 40.87%for far-field earthquake ground motions and 41.83%for near-field earthquake ground motions.Therefore,the adoption of BSTRIs can significantly reduce the collapse probability of URM buildings.展开更多

However, considering all the difficulties in performing ex...Estimation of shear strength and other mechanical characteristics of masonry wall panels through experimental research is the most reliable analysis approach. However, considering all the difficulties in performing experimental research, material costs, laboratory preparations and time expenses, it is not difficult to conclude that this approach is also not the most rational. Aside from experimental investigations, advanced analytical methods are considered cheaper and practical, which can approximately describe the mechanical behavior of masonry walls. The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate how advanced analytical methods, based on discrete and applied element methods, are capable of estimating, in close approximation, the realistic behavior of masonry walls. The use of advanced analysis methods for determination of the behavior of full-scaled masonry walls (with and without openings), avails the inclusion of infill masonry walls on the processes of modeling, analysis and design of building structures, without the need of extensive experimental investigations. This would result in achieving more approximate analytical building models in respect to their realistic behavior and ultimately achieve better optimization of structural design.展开更多
