A new species of caddisfly, Liadotaulius daohugouensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated; the establishment is based on a well-preserved isolated forewing collected from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou. The family status of Liadotaulius is discussed on the basis of new material and is referred to the family Philopotamidae. The PCR primer libraries developed f...The molecular phylogenetics of the Lepidoptera （butterflies and moths） is well studied, but that of Trichoptera （caddisflies）, the sister clade of Lepidoptera, is less studied. The PCR primer libraries developed for lepidopteran phylogenetics might work in Trichoptera. DNA from 8 caddisfly species （Asynarchus nigriculus （Banks, 1908）, Grammotaulius lorettae Denning, 1941, Hesperophylax occidentalis （Banks, 1908）, Limnephilus externus Hagen, 1861, Limnephilus picturatus McLachlan, 1875, Limnephilus secludens Banks, 1914, Limnephilus sublunatus Provancher, 1877 and Agrypnia deflata （Milne, 1931）） was used to screen for amplification. 107 primer pairs for 45 nuclear and 3 mitochondrial genes were tested. Primers for 1 new gene （40S ribosomalprotein $2 （RPS2）） and 8 genes previously used in Trichopteran phylogenetics were recovered （16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase （CAD）, cytoehrome oxidase I （CO1）, cytochrome oxidase 11 （COIl）, elongation factor-1 alpha （EF-1 alpha）, isoeitrate dehydrogenase （IDH）, and RNA polymerase-II （POL-I1））. New primer pairs extended the genomic region sampled for many genes. Evolution rates among loci varied by 2 orders of magnitude. Differences among evolution rates and modes of inheritance offer flexible tools for resolving phylogenetic questions and examining genome evolution in the Trichoptera. Screening libraries of PCR primers is a useful approach for identifying PCR primers in related taxa with limited molecular genetic resources.展开更多
A rich fauna of Ephemeroptera(mayfly),Plecoptera(stonefly) and Trichoptera(caddisfly)(EPT) were collected from 14 highland streams discharging into the Temenggor Reservoir in Perak in the northern peninsular Malaysia....A rich fauna of Ephemeroptera(mayfly),Plecoptera(stonefly) and Trichoptera(caddisfly)(EPT) were collected from 14 highland streams discharging into the Temenggor Reservoir in Perak in the northern peninsular Malaysia.Out of the 3 orders,Ephemeroptera was the most diverse but Trichoptera was the most abundant.45 genera that belonged to 25 families of EPT were recorded.Distribution of EPT varied significantly between orders and types of streams they inhabited.Their diversity and abundance were higher in the second and third order streams.There was no significant relationship between environmental parameters and diversity as well as abundance of EPT in these streams.Their diversity indices together with EPT taxa richness scores referred to clean water environment,hence very suitable for these insects.The EPT taxa richness calculated for the 14 streams reflected that 13 out of 14 streams were undisturbed having good water quality(value of EPT taxa richness > 10).Previous logging and mining activities were suspected to be the main cause for tremendous disappearance of EPT genera in the Kelian stream.Since no previous human activities were recorded around the Telang stream,natural phenomena possibly contributed to low abundance of these insects in the Telang stream.展开更多

Mesokristensenia differs from all extant Lepidoptera, but one genus （Agathiphaga, Agathiphagidae）, in retaining four median veins in the forewing, a plesiomorphy also present in many Trichoptera. Evidence for placing Mesokristensenia in the Lepidoptera includes four traits, notably a previously unrecorded autapomorphy of this insect order： beyond stem Ml＋2, vein M1 is bent and connected to cross-vein r-m （in both wing pairs）. Among 24 characters taken into account to assess the systematic position of Mesokristensenia, 12 are considered informative for a cladistic analysis involving this fossil taxon and the four suborders recognized in present-day Lepidoptera （Zeugloptera, Aglossata, Heterobathmiina, and Glossata）.展开更多
