The use of "should" in the applied translation studies such as translators training, translation aids and translation criticism has proved to be one of the most important tools for progress in the discipline since Holme put forward the basic map of Translation Studies. In this paper, the author discusses mainly the use of "should" in translation criticism, arguing that, the many advantages to be had by this method notwithstanding, there are problems. For example, it is not always fair to judge one translator's work too soon and too sure; and offering overwhelming advice induces disrespect to the translator. For these reasons, the author argues, it is worth exploring ways of translation criticism beyond traditional mode of"should" which may seem subversive of standard uses, either alone or in conjunction with Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). 展开更多

This study employs the framework of translator behavior criticism to conduct a systematic examination of Julia Lovell’s English translation of The True Story of Ah Q,utilizing the“intra-translation and extra-translation dichotomy.”The research investigates how extra-translation factors—such as the translator’s identity, translation motivations, and target readership positioning—shape the formation of the translated text.Through an analysis of intra-translation elements, including linguistic stylistic features, strategies for handling culture-loaded terms, and the use of paratexts, the study reveals the dynamic balance of Lovell’s translation within the“truth-seeking—utility-attaining”continuum.The findings demonstrate that as a Western sinologist-translator,Julia Lovell’s cultural identity, combined with the market-oriented approach of Penguin Books, has collectively shaped a distinctly“reader-oriented”characteristic in her translation. In rendering culture-specific items, she predominantly adopts domesticating strategies, enhancing readability through simplified sentence structures and other accessibility measures to achieve utilitarian goals.Simultaneously, the translator retains an appropriate degree of foreignness in the treatment of key cultural concepts, reflecting a dialectical balance between“authorial fidelity”and“reader adaptation.” 展开更多

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the current state of research on the English translation of Lu You’s poetry, utilizing a data sample comprising research papers published in the CNKI Full-text Database from 2001 to 2022. Employing rigorous longitudinal statistical methods, the study examines the progress achieved over the past two decades. Notably, domestic researchers have displayed considerable interest in the study of Lu You’s English translation works since 2001. The research on the English translation of Lu You’s poetry reveals a diverse range of perspectives, indicating a rich body of scholarship. However, several challenges persist, including insufficient research, limited translation coverage, and a noticeable focus on specific poems such as “Phoenix Hairpin” in the realm of English translation research. Consequently, there is ample room for improvement in the quality of research output on the English translation of Lu You’s poems, as well as its recognition within the academic community. Building on these findings, it is argued that future investigations pertaining to the English translation of Lu You’s poetry should transcend the boundaries of textual analysis and encompass broader theoretical perspectives and research methodologies. By undertaking this shift, scholars will develop a more profound comprehension of Lu You’s poetic works and make substantive contributions to the field of translation studies. Thus, this article aims to bridge the gap between past research endeavors and future possibilities, serving as a guide and inspiration for scholars to embark on a more nuanced and enriching exploration of Lu You’s poetry as well as other Chinese literature classics. 展开更多

This paper analyzes the application of critical thinking in the original text and translation by listing the cases. Make people realize the importance of using critical thinking in translation process and the importance of critical thinking. The word critical is derived from the Greek word "kritikos", which expresses awareness, insight, and judgment. The critical thinking, as we know it in the modern sense, comes from the reflective thinking that Dewey once proposed: bold questioning, cautious assertion. Whether it is the original or the translated text, the translator should be critical at the moment when he/she comes into contact with the article,so as to make a good translation. 展开更多

Since its publication in 1887,Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet has become one of the most influential works in detective fiction worldwide, renowned for its innovative narrative techniques, compelling plot, and deep engagement with themes of justice and morality. The novel has seen 311 Chinese publications, among which two translations stand out:Xieluoke Qian Kaichan translated by Lin Shu and Wei Yi in late Qing dynasty in 1914 and Xuezi Yanjiu, transalted by Ding Zhonghu and Yuan Dihua in the Reform and Opening-up era in 1981.This study examines these two significant Chinese translations from a narrative theory perspective.Lin’s version employs classical allusions and imaginative language, frequently uses internal focalization to enhance reader involvement, incorporates rhetorical embellishments, and reinterprets speeches through adaptation to intensify emotional and plot dynamics. In contrast,Din’s translation adopts vernacular language complemented by explanatory notes to provide cultural context, maintains the original focalization patterns, favors direct translation of dialogues to preserve stylistic authenticity, and adheres closely to the linear narrative structure of the source text. This study not only describes the different translation strategies across two defining historical periods but also contributes to a deeper understanding of how narrative voice, cultural positioning, and reader engagement are negotiated in the translation of classic detective fiction. 展开更多
