The classification of Chinese traditional settlements(CTSs)is extremely important for their differentiated development and protection. The innovative double-branch classification model developed in this study comprehensively utilized the features of remote sensing(RS)images and building facade pictures(BFPs).This approach was able to overcome the limitations of previous methods that used only building facade images to classify settlements.First, the features of the roofs and walls were extracted using a double-branch structure, which consisted of an RS image branch and BFP branch. Then,a feature fusion module was designed to fuse the features of the roofs and walls. The precision, recall, and F1-score of the proposed model were improved by more than 4%compared with the classification model using only RS images or BFPs.The same three indexes of the proposed model were improved by more than 2%compared with other deep learning models. The results demonstrated that the proposed model performed well in the classification of architectural styles in CTSs. 展开更多

Basin settlements are social-ecological systems that embody human–land relationships in river basins and face the challenge of adaptive development. The traditional human–land relationship in the Loess Plateau of the Yellow River Basin has changed under the combined effects of human activities and natural disturbances.Traditional settlements face the challenge of balancing conservation, development, ecology, and livelihood. To clarify the long-time evolution process of settlements in this region,a framework of“population–production–ecology”coupled system in the Loess Plateau of the Yellow River Basin was proposed from the perspective of social-ecological systems.Based on long-term time-series data, the evolution of the regional human–land relationship and the coupling coordination degree of the system were identified.Further, based on the differences in the levels of systems, the adaptation of basin settlements to the external environment was analyzed using water resources as an example. The results showed that the coupling coordination degree within the basin had been decreasing, suggesting the disintegration of the dynamic mechanism of regional development. Moreover, the changes in the development pattern of basin settlements were more delayed compared with those in the basin environment.Overall, this study provides suggestions for the development of sustainable integrated river basin management strategies. 展开更多

The Li ethnic group's traditional settlements in Hainan Island exemplify the integration of environmental adaptation and vernacular innovation in tropical rainforest landscapes.Their spatial configurations and resilience strategies embody a dynamic interplay between ecological systems and cultural logic.Employing a multidisciplinary approach—including ethnographic fieldwork, geospatial analysis, and comparative ethnological investigation—this study examines eight representative Li ethnic group settlements in central and southern Hainan. The findings reveal a distinctive pattern of“striped dispersion and clustered agglomeration”that forms a spatial linkage of“rainforest-watershed-settlement.”Vertical zonation is evident as lowland areas(<500 m)focus on paddy agriculture and fishing, while mid-to-high elevations(500–1000 m)rely on swidden cultivation, foraging, and forest-based subsistence.Settlement morphologies include clustered, dispersed, and grouped layouts that have been shaped by topography and social organization.Boat-shaped dwellings reflect a low-impact construction model that combines material-form-climate synergies to respond to the hot-humid monsoon environment.Ecological resilience emerges from the dynamic coupling of terrain structures, vernacular architecture, and indigenous technical knowledge.The“mountain-forest-field-water”framework regulates spatial hierarchy, while terrace farming, material optimization, and rainfall-adaptive construction enhance land-use efficiency and environmental stability. In contrast to the tiered spatial defense system of the Dong(drum tower-stilt house)and the flood-adaptive floating agriculture of the Dai,Li ethnic group settlements articulate a unique paradigm of vertical ecological symbiosis and cultural embeddedness.Their logic of“moderate use and adaptive balance”offers a transferable model for contemporary resilience planning and ecological governance, especially in tropical regions experiencing rapid socio-environmental transformation. 展开更多

The living heritage approach seeks to link heritage properties with the living dimensions attributed by local communities–tangible and intangible heritage. However, how living heritage can be further understood and managed in post-disaster traditional settlements has yet to be explored adequately. This paper discusses the concept of living heritage embedded in post-earthquake planning and reconstruction of traditional settlements in Jiuzhaigou Valley,a World Heritage property in Sichuan Province. The thematic analysis method is employed to conduct both deductive and inductive content analysis of governmental administrative documents on post-earthquake reconstruction policies and practices. The results demonstrate that the continuity of heritage and the continuity of community are the two essential attributes conceptualizing living heritage by developing a people-centered approach to resilience-building in post-disaster traditional settlements. The paper broadens the concept of living heritage by incorporating the discussion of heritage and traditional settlements into a post-disaster context. The living heritage approach can be further elaborated into an integrated heritage management approach relying on community values and empowerment,to promote urban and rural conservation and urbanization policy-making and practices worldwide. 展开更多

When the development level of a city is determined, its residents' level of participation and support to social organizations, especially the voluntarily participation to civil organizations, are taken into account, as well as, their level of utilization from city services. It is beneficial to organize civil groups who are sensitive to urban and environmental issues. In traditional Turkish settlements, it can be talked about the existence of such an organization as a natural process in social organizations including moral and humanistic values. The feeling of belonging had raised the environmental quality both physically and socially. Respect to the nature and human was the main principle of these settlements. Such organizations has displaced with the written rules and official or civil organizations in modern urban settlements. In these organizations, participation of the users to urban planning decisions is not directly, but indirectly. As people who live in modern settlements do not participate to the planning and building process, they have not felt themselves belong to the place. The environmental quality and respect to the nature and human have been lessened in these modern settlements. This study focuses on the participation of users on planning and building housing environments in traditional and modern Turkish settlements and the comparison of them with their positive and negative results with the examples given. 展开更多

Centripetality,as a spatial prototype characterized by“collective memory”,manifests within the context of traditional Chinese culture as the inherent concept of“human-centeredness”which have existed since ancient times. This paper employs“schema theory”as a cognitive method for morphological analysis.Focusing on traditional Chinese settlements with typical centripetal spatial characteristics,it identifies 11 factors contributing to centripetality in spatial morphology. It constructs a morphological typology pedigree of centripetal spatial schema in traditional settlements.Through quantitative methods,it measures the geometric features of samples and reveals the correlation between morphological factors, typology pedigree, and geometric characteristics. The research aims to systematically understand the external manifestations and underlying causes of centripetal spatial schema in traditional Chinese settlements. This understanding, viewed through the strategic lens of“Chinese-style modernization”,seeks to provide scientific references for the revitalization of historical neighborhoods, the regeneration of traditional villages, and the development of contemporary living environments with Chinese characteristics in China. 展开更多
