Effect of Al_(2)O_(3)nano sol content in Ni-Al_(2)O_(3)composite coating on intermetallic compound formation and properties of Mg/Al soldered joints

Combining Mg and Al dissimilar metals further reduces structural weight,but the formation of intermetallic compounds(IMCs)affectsAl/Mg joint properties.To prevent IMCs,a Ni-Al_(2)O_(3)composite coating was pre-plated on the Mg alloy substrate,and then Sn_(3.0)Ag_(0.5)Cu(SAC 305)solder was utilized to facilitate the joining of AZ31 Mg/6061 Al through ultrasonic-assisted soldering.We investigated the impactof Al_(2)O_(3)nano sol content in the coating on microstructure evolution,IMCs formation,and mechanical properties.Results indicated that theNi-Al_(2)O_(3)composite coating effectively suppressed the Mg-Sn reaction,thereby preventing the formation of Mg_(2)Sn IMC and significantlyenhancing joint strength.In joints with a Ni-Al_(2)O_(3)composite coating containing 50 mL/L Al_(2)O_(3)nano sol,no Mg_(2)Sn IMC was detectedafter 50 min of holding at 260℃,achieving a maximum shear strength of approximately 67.2 MPa.Increasing the Al_(2)O_(3)concentrationfurther expanded the soldering process window.For the joint with Ni-Al_(2)O_(3)(100 mL/L Al_(2)O_(3)nano sol)composite coating held at 260℃for 70 min,the coating was dissolved to a thickness of about 5.8μm,but no Mg_(2)Sn IMC was observed.The Ni-based solid solution formednear the coating/solder interface was strengthened,leading to fractures occurring within the SAC solder,and the maximum shear strengthfurther increased to 73.9 MPa.The strengthening mechanism of the joints facilitated by using the Ni-Al_(2)O_(3)composite coating was revealedby comparing with pure Ni-assisted joints.Therefore,employing a Ni-Al_(2)O_(3)composite coating as a barrier layer represents a promisingstrategy for inhibiting IMC formation during the joining of dissimilar metals. 展开更多

In this study, for marine application purposes, we evaluated the effect of process parameter and particle loading on the microstructure, mechanical reinforcement and corrosion resistance properties of a Zn-TiO2-WO3 nanocomposite produced via electrodeposition. We characterized the morphological properties of the composite coatings with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). We carried out mechanical examination using a Dura Scan hardness tester and a CERT UMT-2 multi-functional tribological tester. We evaluated the corrosion properties by linear polarization in 3.5% NaCl. The results show that the coatings exhibited good stability and the quantitative particle loading greatly enhanced the structural and morphological properties, hardness behavior and corrosion resistance of the coatings. We observed the precipitation of this alloy on steel is greatly influenced by the composite characteristics. 展开更多

The coating was compact and comprised of nano-laminated Al2O3 and Au layers. High temperature cyclic oxidation test was employed to investigate the oxidation resistance of the composite coatings. The results revealed that the applied Al2O3/Au nano-laminated composite coatings improved the oxidation and spallation resistance of the stainless steel substrate significantly. The mechanism accounting for oxidation resistance was related with the suppression of inward oxygen diffusion and selective oxidation of Cr in the substrate. The mechanism accounting for spallation resistance was attributed to the relaxation of thermal stress by the nano-laminated structure. 展开更多

TiB2 and Dy2O3 were used as codeposited particles in the preparation of Ni-TiB2-Dy2O3 composite coatings to improve its performance. Ni-TiB2-Dy2O3 composite coatings were prepared by electrodeposition method with a nickel cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and hexadecylpyridinium bromide solution containing TiB2 and Dy2O3 particles. The content of codeposited TiB2 and Dy2O3 in the composite coatings was controlled by adding TiB2 and Dy2O3 particles of different concentrations into the solution, respectively. The effects of TiB2 and Dy2O3 content on microhardness, wear mass loss and friction coefficients of composite coatings were investigated. The composite coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Ni-TiBE-Dy2O3 composite coatings showed higher microhardness, lower wear mass loss and friction coefficient compared with those of the pure Ni coating and Ni-TiB2 composite coatings. The wear mass loss of Ni-TiB2-Dy2O3 composite coatings was 9 and 1.57 times lower than that of the pure Ni coating and Ni-TiB2 composite coatings, respectively. The friction coefficient of pure Ni coating, Ni-TiB2 and Ni-TiB2-Dy2O3 composite coatings were 0.723, 0.815 and 0.619, respectively. Ni-TiBE-Dy2O3 composite coatings displayed the least friction coefficient among the three coatings. Dy2O3 particles in composite coatings might serve as a solid lubricant between contact surfaces to decrease the friction coefficient and abate the wear of the composite coatings. The loading-bearing capacity and the wear-reducing effect of the Dy2O3 particles were closely related to the content of Dy2O3 particles in the composite coatings. 展开更多

Satellited CoNiCrAlY–Al_(2)O_(3)feedstocks with 2wt%, 4wt%, and 6wt% oxide nanoparticles and pure CoNiCrAlY powder were deposited by the high-velocity oxy fuel process on an Inconel738 superalloy substrate. The oxidation test was performed at 1050℃ for 5, 50, 100,150, 200, and 400 h. The microstructure and phase composition of powders and coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The bonding strength of the coatings was also evaluated. The results proved that with the increase in the percentage of nanoparticles(from 2wt% to 6wt%), the amount of porosity(from 1vol% to 4.7vol%), unmelted particles, and roughness of the coatings(from 4.8 to 8.8 μm) increased, and the bonding strength decreased from 71 to 48 MPa. The thicknesses of the thermally grown oxide layer of pure and composite coatings(2wt%, 4wt%, and 6wt%) after 400 h oxidation were measured as 6.5, 5.5, 7.6, and 8.1 μm, respectively.The CoNiCrAlY–2wt% Al_(2)O_(3)coating showed the highest oxidation resistance due to the diffusion barrier effect of well-dispersed nanoparticles. The CoNiCrAlY–6wt% Al_(2)O_(3)coating had the lowest oxidation resistance due to its rough surface morphology and porous microstructure. 展开更多

The NiCrBSi-Y2O3 composite coatings were prepared on the surface of 45 carbon steel by plasma spray, the microstructure and tribological properties of the coatings were investigated. The results show that the NiCrBSi-Y2O3 composite coatings are mainly composed of γ-Ni, CrB, Cr7C3 and Y2O3. With addition of Y2O3, hard phases such as CrB, Cr7C3 emerge in composite coating, and the density of the composite coatings also increases. The NiCrBSi-0.5Y2O3 composite coating presents excellent tribological properties. Its friction coefficient is 0.175, which is about 37% of that of the pure NiCrBSi coating. The mass wear loss is 1.2 mg, which is reduced by 43% compared with the pure NiCrBSi coating. When the loads are 6-10 N, the NiCrBSi-0.5Y2O3 composite coating suffers from slight wear and the wear mechanisms are mainly adhesive wear accompany with slight micro-cutting wear and micro-fracture wear. As the load increases to 12 N, the wear mechanisms are adhesive wear and severe micro-cutting wear. 展开更多

A facile ammonium-dichromate solution immersion method was introduced to synthesize the copperwettable Cr3C2 coating on and inside the carbon-carbon (C/C) preform. The formation mechanism and the microstructures of the Cr3C2 coatings were studied. The contact angle between molten copper and the C/C decreased from 140°to 60°, demonstrating the significant improvement in the wettability. The Cr3C2- coated C/C-Cu composite with only 4.2% porosity and 3.69 gcm^-3 density was manufactured through copper infiltration. As a result, the thermal and electrical conductivity of the modified C/C-Cu increased significantly due to the infiltrated copper. Also the mechanical properties of the composites including both the flexural and compressive strengths were enhanced by over 100%. The modified C/C-Cu composite exhibited lower friction coefficients and wear rates for different load levels than those of the commercial C/Cu composite. These results demonstrate the potential of the modified C/C-Cu material for use in electrical contacts. 展开更多

A tritium permeation barrier is required in fusion blankets for the reduction of fuel loss and radiological hazard.In this study,an Al2O3/Y2O3 composite coating was prepared on 316 L stainless steel by radiofrequency magnetron sputtering in order to improve the tritium permeation resistance.The microstructure and the phase composition of the Al2O3/Y2O3 composite coating are observed by scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction.Moreover,Auger electron spectroscopy was used to characterize the depth profiles of Al,Y and O elements.The results clearly indicate that the Al2O3/Y2O3 composite coating is fully dense and the total thickness is approximately 340 nm.The Al2O3/Y2O3 coating consists of an amorphous Al2O3 and the cubic Y2O3,in which Al,Y and O elements are homogeneously distributed in the vertical base direction.Furthermore,the deuterium permeation property of the Al2O3/Y2O3 composite coating was measured by the gas phase permeation method.The results show that the introduction of an interface and the existence of a tiny amount of micro-defects improve the deuterium resistance of the Al2O3/Y2O3 coating,and its deuterium permeation reduction factor is 536-750 at 873-973 K.Therefore,it is concluded that the Al2O3/Y2O3 co mposite coating as deuterium permeation barrier can significa ntly enha nce the deuterium permeation resistance property. 展开更多

目的针对传统不粘涂层耐磨性差、表面磨损后疏水性快速衰减等问题,提出一种离散Al_(2)O_(3)-40%TiO_(2)(AT40)陶瓷凸起结构强化的聚四氟乙烯(PTFE)耐磨不粘涂层结构设计,在摩擦磨损中,通过高硬度的陶瓷凸起对摩擦副的支撑作用,避免PTFE... 目的针对传统不粘涂层耐磨性差、表面磨损后疏水性快速衰减等问题,提出一种离散Al_(2)O_(3)-40%TiO_(2)(AT40)陶瓷凸起结构强化的聚四氟乙烯(PTFE)耐磨不粘涂层结构设计,在摩擦磨损中,通过高硬度的陶瓷凸起对摩擦副的支撑作用,避免PTFE被快速磨除,以提高不粘涂层的耐磨性。方法首先,采用等离子喷涂半熔化粒子沉积具有高表面粗糙度的AT40陶瓷涂层;其次,采用PTFE填充AT40陶瓷涂层表面半熔化粒子凸起间的空隙,获得复合涂层。研究喷涂距离对AT40涂层表面结构的影响,揭示AT40涂层表面粗糙度对复合涂层耐磨性能及持久不粘性能的影响规律。结果当喷涂距离从40mm分别提高到80、120、150mm时,等离子喷涂AT40陶瓷涂层的表面粗糙度先减小后增加,在喷涂距离为40mm时,粗糙度Ra最高,为19.3μm,R_(z)为220.4μm。将该条件下制备的AT40陶瓷涂层表面涂覆PTFE面层后,在摩擦磨损25000周后依然能够保持不粘性能,相较于传统的PTFE不粘涂层提升了约4倍。结论大气等离子喷涂的高粗糙度AT40陶瓷底层与PTFE面层的复合耐磨不粘涂层具有优异的耐磨性能和持久的不粘性能,可大幅提升不粘烹饪器皿的使用寿命。 展开更多

Metal and nano-ceramic nanocomposite coatings were prepared on the gray cast iron surface by the electrodeposition method. The Ni-Co was used as the metal matrix,and nano-Al2O3 was chosen as the second-phase particulates. To avoid poor inter-face bonding and stress distribution,the gradient structure of biology materials was found as the model and therefore the gradient composite coating was prepared. The morphology of the composite coatings was flatter and the microstructure was denser than that of pure Ni-Co coatings. The composite coatings were prepared by different current densities,and the 2-D and 3-D morphologies of the surface coatings were observed. The result indicated that the 2-D structure became rougher and the 3-D surface density of apices became less when the current density was increased. The content of nanoparticulates reached a maximum value at the current density of 40mA·cm^-2,at the same time the properties including microhardness and wear-resistance were analyzed. The microhardness reached a maximum value and the wear volume was also less at the current density of 40mA·cm^-2. The reason was that nano-Al2O3 particles caused dispersive strengthening and grain refining. 展开更多

To improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys, a 5 kW continuous wave CO2 laser was used to investigate the laser surface cladding on AZ31 B magnesium alloys with Al-Si/Al2O3-TiO2 composite powders. A detailed microstructure, chemical composition, and phase analysis of the composite coatings were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The laser cladding shows good metallurgical bonding with the substrate. The composite coatings are composed of Mgl7Al12, Al3Mg2, Mg2Si, Al2O3, and TiO2 phases. Compared to the average microhardness (50HV0.05) of the AZ3 1 B substrate, that of the composite coatings (230HV0.05) is improved significantly. The wear resistances of the surface layers were evaluated in detail. The results demonstrate that the wear resistances of the laser surface-modified samples are considerably improved compared to the substrate. It also show that the composite coatings exhibit better corrosion resistance than that of the substrate in 3.5wt% NaCI solution. 展开更多

An orthogonal test containing six factors and five levels was carried out to acquire the optimum technical parameters. Mierostruetures and properties of the composite coatings were studied. The results show that the coatings consist of Al2O3 particulates distributed uniformly and Al matrix, and the interface between the particulate and matrix is continuous, compact and clean. With increasing the mass fraction of Al2O3 in the mixed powders, the volume fraction of Al2O3 in the coatings iacreases. The Al2O3p/Al composite coating with 14% Al2O3 volume fraction has more compact microstrueture and more satisfactory properties. 展开更多

High-performance yttrium oxide-phenolic resin(Y_(2)O_(3)-PF)alternating coating was prepared on epoxy resin-based composite material using supersonic plasma spraying and dual-channel powder feeding technique.Y_(2)O_(3)-coated PF(Y_(2)O_(3)/PF)powder was firstly sprayed onto the substrate,forming a transition layer,and then the spherical Y_(2)O_(3) powder and Y_(2)O_(3)/PF powder were alternately deposited to form the composite alternating coating.Results show that the alternating coating is mainly composed of deposited Y_(2)O_(3)/PF powder.The bonding strength between coating and substrate is as high as 26.48 MPa with the single-test maximum bonding strength of 28.10 MPa,and shear strength reaches 24.30 MPa.Additionally,the heat transfer effect caused by external Y_(2)O_(3) particles gradually softens and even melts PF,thus effectively avoiding the damage of high temperature to molecular structure and thereby promoting the crosslinking and curing effects of resin during the deposition process.In the meantime,the unmelted Y_(2)O_(3) powder results in the shot peening effect,which washes out and eliminates the powder particles with inferior deposition effect,ultimately improving the physical and chemical properties of the alternating coating. 展开更多

Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)-TiO_(2)coatings were successfully prepared by plasma spraying Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)composite powders with and without TiO_(2)addition.The effects of TiO_(2)on the phase composition,microstructure and properties of the Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)coating were studied.The results show that the Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)-TiO_(2)composite powder was composed of t-ZrO_(2),a-Al_(2)O_(3),m-ZrO_(2)and rutile,while the Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)-TiO_(2)composite coating consisted of t-ZrO_(2),a-Al_(2)O_(3)and c-Al_(2)O_(3).The diffraction peaks of TiO_(2)could not be detected in the Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)-TiO_(2)coating even up to10 wt%TiO_(2)addition.The reason may be that TiO_(2)was dissolved in the amorphous phase or formed solid solution with c-Al_(2)O_(3)phase in the coating during cooling.Compared with the Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)coating,the as-prepared Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)-TiO_(2)coating had denser microstructure,less microcracks and more amorphous phases.The density of the Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)-TiO_(2)coating increased with the increase of TiO_(2)content.The Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)-10 wt%TiO_(2)coating had the most uniform and dense microstructure,possessed higher toughness,adhesive strength and wear resistance compared with the Al_(2)O_(3)-ZrO_(2)coating,which was due to its lower porosity and more uniform microstructure. 展开更多

Sm2O3 and TiB2 were used as codeposited particles in electrodeposition Ni-TiB2-Sm2O3 composite coatings to improve its performance. Ni-TiB2-Sm2O3 composite coatings were electrodeposited in the nickel sulfate,hexadecylpyridinium bromide and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide solution containing TiB2 and Sm2O3 particles. The content of codeposited Sm2O3 in the composite coating was controlled by changing the concentrations of Sm2O3 particles in the solution. The composite coatings were characterized with X-ray diffraction(XRD) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer(ICP-AES) . The effects of Sm2O3 content on microhardness,wear weight loss and friction coefficient of composite coatings were investigated,respectively. The microhardness of the Ni-TiB2-Sm2O3 composite coatings was 19.35%,16.58%,2.03% higher than that of the Ni coating,Ni-Sm2O3 and Ni-TiB2 composite coatings,respectively. The wear weight loss of the Ni-TiB2-Sm2O3 composite coatings was 7,2.33,1.22 times lower than that of the Ni coating,Ni-Sm2O3 and Ni-TiB2 composite coatings,respectively. The friction coefficient of the Ni coating,Ni-Sm2O3,Ni-TiB2 and Ni-TiB2-Sm2O3 composite coatings were 0.712,0.649,0.850 and 0.788,respectively. The loading-bearing capacity and the wear-reducing effect of the Sm2O3 particles were closely related to the content of Sm2O3 particles in the composite coatings. 展开更多

Ni-Co-Fe2O3 composite coatings were electrodeposited using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)-modified Watt's nickel bath with Fe2O3 particles dispersed in it.The effects of the plating parameters on the chemical composition,structural and morphological characteristics of the electrodeposited Ni-Co-Fe2O3 composite coatings were investigated by energy dispersive X-ray(EDS) spectroscopy,X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results reveal that Fe2O3 particles can be codeposited in the Ni-Co matrix.The codeposition of Fe2O3 particles with Ni-Co is favoured at high Fe2O3 particle concentration and medium stirring,and the deposition of Co is favoured at high concentration of CTAB.Moreover,the study of the textural perfection of the deposits reveals that the presence of particles leads to the worsening of the quality of the observed <220> preferred orientation.Composites with high concentration of embedded particles exhibit a preferred crystal orientation of <111>.The more the embedded Fe2O3 particles in the metallic matrix,the smaller the sizes of the crystallite for the composite deposits. 展开更多

Many steel components are needed to be reinforced on their surface to have a high abrasive resistance and corrosion resistance. Based on self-propagating hightemperature synthesis, a process to making Al2O3 composite coatings on mild steel substrate in atmospheric environment with the help of simple auxiliary facilities was developed successfully. A pre-coated bilayer coating was employed. The effects of Fe content in pre-coated transition layer on phase composition, porosity and interfacial bon ding were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrum (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal shock resistance and abrasive resistance were investigated. When Fe content changes from 0 wt% to 50 wt%, the bond quality at first becomes better and then worse gradually. When Fe content is less 20 wt%, there is a small gap between the transition layer and the substrate;when Fe contents are 30 wt% and 40 wt%, working layer, the transition layer and the substrate bond together well. The working layer is mainly composed of Al2O3, Fe-Cr and Al(Cr)2O3 phases and has a dense structure with porosity of less than 1 %. The coating has a good thermal shock resistance and abrasive resistance. The abrasive resistance of the working layer is about ten times that of the substrate. 展开更多

Molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) sheath and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) core blended powders were fabricated by spray drying. A derived coating material was produced for the application as microwave absorbers using the as prepared powders by atmospheric plasma spray (APS) technology. The effects of MoSi2/Al2O3 mass ratio on the dielectric and physical mechanical properties of the composite coatings were investigated. When the MoSi2 content of the composites increases from 0 to 45%, the flexure strength and fracture toughness improve from 198 to 324 MPa and 3.05 to 4.82 MPa-m1/2 then decline to 310 MPa and 4.67 MPa-m1/2, respectively. The dielectric loss tangent increases with increasing MoSi2 content, and the real part of permittivity decreases conversely over the frequency range of 8.2-12.4 GHz. These effects are due to the agglomeration of early molten MoSi2 particles and the increase of the electrical conductivity with increasing MoSi2 content. 展开更多

Experimentalresults showed that the abrasive wear resistance of Al_2O_3/PA1010 composite coatings has a goodlinear relationship with the volume fraction of Al_2O_3 particles in Al_2O_3/PA1010 compositecoatings, and the linear correlative coefficient is 0.979. Under the experimental conditions, thesize of Al_2O_3 particles (40.5-161.0 μm) has little influence on the abrasive wear resistance ofAl_2O_3/PA1010 composite coatings. By treating the surface of Al_2O_3 particles with a suitablebonding agent, the distribution of Al_2O_3 particles in matrix PA1010 is more homogeneous and thebonding state between Al_2O_3 particles and matrix PA1010 is better. Therefore, the Al_2O_3particles in Al_2O_3/PA1010 composite coatings make the Al_2O_3/PA1010 composite coatings havebetter abrasive wear resistance than PA1010 coatings.
