Purpose-The indoor vibration compaction test(IVCT)was a key step in controlling the compaction quality for high-speed railway graded aggregate(HRGA),which currently had a research gap on the assessment indicators and compaction parameters.Design/methodology/approach-To address these issues,a novel multi-indicator IVCT method was proposed, including physical indicator dry density(ρd)and mechanical indicators dynamic stiffness(Krb)and bearing capacity coefficient(K20).Then,a series of IVCTs on HRGA under different compaction parameters were conducted with an improved vibration compactor, which could monitor the physical-mechanical indicators in real-time.Finally,the optimal vibration compaction parameters, including the moisture content(ω),the diameter-to-maximum particle size ratio(Rd),the thickness-to-maximum particle size ratio(Rh),the vibration frequency(f),the vibration mass(Mc)and the eccentric distance(re),were determined based on the evolution characteristics for the physical-mechanical indicators during compaction.Findings-All results indicated that theρd gradually increased and then stabilized, and the Krb initially increased and then decreased. Moreover, the inflection time of the Krb was present as the optimal compaction time(Tlp)during compaction.Additionally, optimal compaction was achieved whenωwas the water-holding content after mud pumping,Rd was 3.4,Rh was 3.5,f was the resonance frequency, and the ratio between the excitation force and the Mc was 1.8.Originality/value-The findings of this paper were significant for the quality control of HRGA compaction. 展开更多

Ground improvement has been used on many construction sites to densify granular materials, in other word, to improve soil properties and reduce potential settlement. This work presents a case study of ground improvement using rapid impact compaction (RIC). The research site comprises the construction of workshop and depots as part of railway development project at Batu Gajah-Ipoh, Malaysia. In-situ testing results show that the subsurface soil comprises mainly of sand and silty sand through the investigated depth extended to 10 m. Groundwater is approximately 0.5 m below the ground surface. Evaluation of improvement was based on the results of pre- and post-improvement cone penetration test (CPT). Interpretation software has been used to infer soil properties. Load test was conducted to estimate soil settlement. It is found that the technique succeeds in improving soil properties namely the relative density increases from 45% to 70%, the friction angle of soil is increased by an average of 3°, and the soil settlement is reduced by 50%: The technique succeeds in improving soil properties to approximately 5.0 m in depth depending on soil uniformity with depth. 展开更多

Rolling dynamic compaction(RDC),which involves the towing of a noncircular module,is now widespread and accepted among many other soil compaction methods. However,to date, there is no accurate method for reliable prediction of the densification of soil and the extent of ground improvement by means of RDC.This study presents the application of artificial neural networks(ANNs) for a priori prediction of the effectiveness of RDC.The models are trained with in situ dynamic cone penetration(DCP) test data obtained from previous civil projects associated with the 4-sided impact roller. The predictions from the ANN models are in good agreement with the measured field data,as indicated by the model correlation coefficient of approximately 0.8.It is concluded that the ANN models developed in this study can be successfully employed to provide more accurate prediction of the performance of the RDC on a range of soil types. 展开更多

Rolling dynamic compaction (RDC),which employs non-circular module towed behind a tractor,is an innovative soil compaction method that has proven to be successful in many ground improvement applications.RDC involves repeatedly delivering high-energy impact blows onto the ground surface, which improves soil density and thus soil strength and stiffness. However, there exists a lack of methods to predict the effectiveness of RDC in different ground conditions, which has become a major obstacle to its adoption. For this,in this context,a prediction model is developed based on linear genetic programming (LGP),which is one of the common approaches in application of artificial intelligence for nonlinear forecasting. The model is based on in situ density-related data in terms of dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) results obtained from several projects that have employed the 4-sided,8-t impact roller (BH-1300).It is shown that the model is accurate and reliable over a range of soil types.Furthermore,a series of parametric studies confirms its robustness in generalizing data.In addition, the results of the comparative study indicate that the optimal LGP model has a better predictive performance than the existing artificial neural network (ANN) model developed earlier by the authors. 展开更多

It had been suggested to use the West African Compaction Test Procedure since the early 1950’s so as to determine the CBR of gravel lateritic soils in West African countries [1]. This test procedure called West African Compaction (WAC) [2] is largely used in road construction in West African countries and had the particularity to be long and use a large amount of material. This note is the result of several comparisons between test procedures taken to determine the CBR from the WAC method to the standardized laboratory test commonly used to determine the CBR. 展开更多

Advancements in semiconductor technology are making gate-level test generation more challenging. This is because a large amount of detailed structural information must be processed in the search process of automatic test pattern generation (ATPG). In addition, ATPG needs to deal with new defects caused by process variation when IC is shrinking. To reduce the computation effort of ATPG, test generation could be started earlier at higher abstraction level, which is in line with top-down design methodology that has become more popular nowadays. In this research, we employ Chen’s high-level fault model in the high-level ATPG. Besides shorter ATPG time as shown in many previous works, our study showed that high-level ATPG also contributes to test compaction. This is because most of the high-level faults correlate with the gate-level collapsed faults especially at input/output of the modules in a circuit. The high-level ATPG prototype used in our work is mainly composed by constraint-driven test generation engine and fault simulation engine. Experimental result showed that more reduced/compact test set can be generated from the high-level ATPG. 展开更多

In order to achieve higher density of P/M steels using the die wall lubrication compacting method or powder lubricant in warm compaction process, the influence of different process parameters on the green density of warm compacted samples was studied. According to the orthogonal test method, the authors systematically study the influence of the different compaction pressure, condition of lubrication and compaction temperature on the green density of the sample in the warm compaction process, and put forward the optimal process parameter of warm compaction experiment. It is found that, a high compaction pressure (≥700 MPa), die wall lubrication combined with a small amount of internal lubricants, and fitting compaction temperature by different condition of lubrication, are the optimal parameters in warm compaction process. 展开更多

Quantitative detection of sleeve grouting compactness is a technical challenge in civil engineering testing. This study explores a novel quantitative detection method based on ultrasonic time-frequency dual-domain analysis. It establishes a mapping relationship between sleeve grouting compactness and characteristic parameters.First, this study made samples with gradient defects for two types of grouting sleeves,G18 and G20.These included four cases:2D,4D,6D defects(where D is the diameter of the grouting sleeve),and no-defect.Then,an ultrasonic input/output data acquisition system was established.Three-dimensional sound field distribution data were obtained through an orthogonal detection layout and pulse reflection principles. Finally,a novel quantification detection with a comprehensive defect index(DI)was established by comprehensively considering eight feature parameters, such as time-frequency domain Kurtosis factor(KU),Skewness factor(SK),Formfactor(FF),Crest factor(CF),Impulse factor(IF),Clearance factor(CLF),Wavelet packet energy entropy(WPEE),and Hilbert energy peak(HEP).Construct a DI index by quantifying the difference between defect signals and defect free signals in the time-frequency domain.Experimental results show that, under no-defect conditions, the values of feature parameters are significantly lower than those under defect conditions.Among these, the KU,FF,CF,WPEE and HEP exhibit strong correlations with grout sleeve compactness. The proposed DI index in both types of grout sleeves showed good universality with a linear fit goodness of 0.847–0.962.However,G20 the larger inner diameter and length of the sleeve result in a more complex medium effect during ultrasonic propagation, making its DI index more sensitive to defects than the G18 sleeve. Therefore, the presented method is effective for quantitative detection and analysis of the compactness of grouting sleeves. 展开更多

An S-band high-gradient accelerating structure is designed for a proton therapy linear accelerator(linac)to accommodate the new development of compact, singleroom facilities and ultra-high dose rate(FLASH)radiotherapy. To optimize the design,an efficient optimization scheme is applied to improve the simulation efficiency. An S-band accelerating structure with 2856 MHz is designed with a low beta of 0.38,which is a difficult structure to achieve for a linac accelerating proton particles from 70 to 250 MeV,as a high gradient up to 50 MV/m is required.A special design involving a dual-feed coupler eliminates the dipole field effect. This paper presents all the details pertaining to the design, fabrication, and cold test results of the S-band high-gradient accelerating structure. 展开更多

High liquid limit soil generally adopted in expressway embankment construction of southern mountains, which often expresses some characteristics including high moisture content, high porosity ratio, low permeability, high compressibility, certain disintegration, and so on. Spring soil phenomenon and inhomogeneous compaction have effects on the quality of embankment construction, just because the water in soil is difficult to evaporate. Based on the study of reinforcement mechanism for high liquid limit soil, in situ tests for dynamic compaction treatment in Yizhang-Fengtouling expressway embankment were developed. The reliable and economical dynamic compaction treatment methods and the construction technology for large range high liquid limit soil embankment in southern mountains expressway were discussed. In the process, convenient measurement methods were adopted to evaluate the treatment effects. The test results show that the dynamic compaction method has good treatment effects on the local red clay embankment. The embankment compaction degree is improved with compactness coming to 90% around tamping pits and compactness over 95% in tamping pits interior after tamping. The bearing capacity, the physical mechanic-property and the shear strength for soil are obviously improved, which are enhanced with cohesive strength increasing over 10 kPa and compression modulus increasing over 3 MPa. 展开更多

A comparison between deep learning and standalone models in predicting the compaction parameters of soil is presented in this research. One hundred and ninety and fifty-three soil samples were randomly picked up from two hundred and forty-three soil samples to create training and validation datasets, respectively. The performance and accuracy of the models were measured by root mean square error(RMSE),coefficient of determination(R2),Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient(r),mean absolute error(MAE),variance accounted for(VAF),mean absolute percentage error(MAPE),weighted mean absolute percentage error(WMAPE),a20-index,index of scatter(IOS),and index of agreement(IOA).Comparisons between standalone models demonstrate that the model MD 29 in Gaussian process regression(GPR)and model MD 101 in support vector machine(SVM)can achieve over 96%of accuracy in predicting the optimum moisture content(OMC)and maximum dry density(MDD)of soil, and outperformed other standalone models. The comparison between deep learning models shows that the models MD 46 and MD 146 in long short-term memory(LSTM)predict OMC and MDD with higher accuracy than ANN models. However, the LSTM models outperformed the GPR models in predicting the compaction parameters. The sensitivity analysis illustrates that fine content(FC),specific gravity(SG),and liquid limit(LL)highly influence the prediction of compaction parameters. 展开更多

Calcareous sand is a kind of special medium which is composed of calcium carbonate and other difficult soluble carbonate substances. Because of its rich in inner pore space and easy crashed, the mechanical property is very different from conventional quartz sand. Based on the compaction test and direct shear test of calcareous sand,by means of data fitting, the coupling relationship between compaction density and mechanical property under different water contents was obtained; meanwhile, the shear strength expression was built on the basis of the relationship between water content and dry density. 展开更多

The dynamic model experiment of the rock filling embankment was carried out to investigate the vibration compaction mechanism. The rock filling materials were compacted by the plate-vibrated compactor, and the characteristics of the rock filling materials, such as settlement, pressure change and response waveform, were measured by the dynamic earth pressure gauge and aceelerometer. Moreover, a new method for detecting the compactness of the rock filling embankment was proposed based on the maximum dry density and modulus of deformation. The results show that the process of vibration compaction includes compact, elastic deformation and loose stages, and the vibratory pressure transfers to the surroundings from the vibration center in non-linear rule. Furthermore, the test results obtained by the present method are basically in agreement with those obtained by the traditional method, and the maximum relative error between them is about 0.5%. 展开更多

Effective depth of dynamic compaction was summarized, and the advantages of dynamic compaction technology of effective depth were analyzed elaborately. The formula determining the reinforcement depth was deduced by using dimensional analysis method. The influential factors of hammer weight, hammer area, dry density of filling materials and filling materials types were comprehensively investigated. The formula of effective depth was established based on the definition of the dimensions analysis. Based on experimental results of in-situ dynamic compaction, the technology was applied to highway embankment filled with soils and rocks. From the comparison between the theoretical calculations and the experimental results, it is found that the theoretical results using the developed formula are close to experimental results. 展开更多

Based on the successive iteration in the Taylor series expansion method, a three-point explicit compact difference scheme with arbitrary order of accuracy is derived in this paper. Numerical characteristics of the scheme are studied by the Fourier analysisl Unlike the conventional compact difference schemes which need to solve the equation to obtain the unknown derivatives in each node, the proposed scheme is explicit and can achieve arbitrary order of accuracy in space. Application examples for the convectiondiffusion problem with a sharp front gradient and the typical lid-driven cavity flow are given. It is found that the proposed compact scheme is not only simple to implement and economical to use, but also is effective to simulate the convection-dominated problem and obtain high-order accurate solution in coarse grid systems. 展开更多

This work presents a case study of ground improvement using RIC and its suitability for site preparation earthworks. The RIC technique has been performed in an early site preparation which consists of a cut and fill contract for a mega project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. RIC is a process where loose subsurface soils are improved through compaction with the utilization of successive impact blows from the top surface. This project involves the compaction of the fill materials (with an average thickness of 4 m) and loose natural formations (averaging 4 m in depth). The objective of the soil treatment scheme is to increase the relative density of the soils (both fill and natural) to 85%. The usage of the RIC within the site preparation earthwork applications is possible provided the presence of certain elements—specifically, granular materials and particles finer than number 200 sieve—do not exceed 15%. The RIC method proved to be cost- and time-effective when utilized for filling compaction activities since it compacts considerable soil thicknesses with a single action from the top surface, and can be used as an alternative to the traditional method of compacting fill formations in pre-determined lift thicknesses. 展开更多

Infinite matrix theory is an important branch of function analysis.Every linear operator on a complex separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space corresponds to an infinite matrix with respect a orthonormal base of the space, but not every infinite matrix corresponds to an operator. The classical Schur test provides an elegant and useful criterion for the boundedness of linear operators, which is considered a respectable mathematical accomplishment. In this paper,we prove the compact version of the Schur test. Moreover,we provide the Schur test for the Schatten class S_(2).It is worth noting that our main results can be applicable to the general matrix without limitation on non-negative numbers. We finally provide the Schur test for compact operators from l_(p) into l_(q). 展开更多
