A series of divinylphenyl-acryloyl chloride copolymers(PDVB-co-PACl)is synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization employing tert-butyl acrylate and divinylbenzene as monomers.PDVB-co-PACl is utilized to graft on the surface of spherical aluminum nitride(AlN)to prepare functionalized AlN(AlN@PDVB-co-PACl).Polymethylhydrosiloxane(PMHS)is then used as the matrix to prepare thermally conductive AlN@PDVB-co-PACl/PMHS composites with AlN@PDVB-co-PACl as fillers through blending and curing. The grafting of PDVB-co-PACl synchronously enhances the hydrolysis resistance of AlN and its interfacial compatibility with PMHS matrix. When the molecular weight of PDVB-co-PACl is 5100 g mol^(-1)and the grafting density is 0.8 wt%,the composites containing 75 wt%of AlN@PDVB-co-PACl exhibit the optimal comprehensive performance. The thermal conductivity(λ)of the composite is 1.14 W m^(-1)K^(-1),which enhances by 20%and 420%compared to theλof simply physically blended AlN/PMHS composite and pure PMHS,respectively.Meanwhile,AlN@PDVB-co-PACl/PMHS composites display remarkable hydrothermal aging resistance by retaining 99.1%of itsλafter soaking in 90°C deionized water for 80 h,whereas theλof the blended AlN/PMHS composites decreases sharply to 93.7%. 展开更多

Glass fibers(GFs)/epoxy laminated composites always present weak interlaminar shear strength(ILSS)and low cross-plane thermal conductivity coefficient(λ⊥).In this work,silica-sol,synthesized from tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS)and KH-560 via sol-gel method, was employed to functionalize the surface of GFs(Si-GFs).Together with a spherical boron nitride(BNN-30),the thermally conductive BNN-30/Si-GFs/epoxy laminated composites were then fabricated. Results demonstrate that Si-sol is beneficial to the improvement of mechanical properties for epoxy laminated composites(especially for ILSS).The BNN-30/Si-GFs/epoxy laminated composites with 15 wt%BNN-30 fillers display the optimal comprehensive properties.In-planeλ(λ//)andλ⊥reach the maximum of 2.37 and 1.07 W.m-1.K-1,146.9%and 132.6%higher than those of SiGFs/epoxy laminated composites(λ//=0.96 W.m-1.K-1 andλ⊥=0.46 W.m-1K-1),respectively,and also about 10.8 and 4.9 times those of pure epoxy resin(λ//=λ⊥,0.22 W.m-1.K-1).And the heat-resistance index(THRI),dielectric constant(ε),dielectric loss(tanδ),breakdown strength(E0),surface resistivity(ρs)as well as volume resistivity(ρv)are 197.3℃,4.95,0.0046,22.3 kV.mm-1,1.8×1014Ω,and 2.1×1014Ω.cm,respectively. 展开更多

Rapid development of energy, electrical and electronic technologies has put forward higher requirements for the thermal conductivities of polymers and their composites. However, the thermal conductivity coefficient(λ)values of prepared thermally conductive polymer composites are still difficult to achieve expectations, which has become the bottleneck in the fields of thermally conductive polymer composites.Aimed at that, based on the accumulation of the previous research works by related researchers and our research group, this paper proposes three possible directions for breaking through the bottlenecks:(1)preparing and synthesizing intrinsically thermally conductive polymers,(2)reducing the interfacial thermal resistance in thermally conductive polymer composites,and(3)establishing suitable thermal conduction models and studying inner thermal conduction mechanism to guide experimental optimization. Also, the future development trends of the three above-mentioned directions are foreseen, hoping to provide certain basis and guidance for the preparation, researches and development of thermally conductive polymers and their composites. 展开更多

The x wt%graphene-Ti composites(x = 0,0.2,0.3 and 0.4) were obtained using the powder metallurgy method. The X-ray diffraction results demonstrated that the peak intensity of graphene increased monotonically with increasing graphene content.Furthermore, the number of grain boundary and interface between graphene and matrix increased as graphene increased, which led to a sharp rise of thermal resistances. The thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity of composites initially decreased drastically with addition of graphene, but then increased with increasing graphene content from 0.2 to 0.4 wt%.This phenomenon was connected with the graphene content and the characteristics of Ti matrix(pores, grain boundary and interface between graphene and matrix). The variation of the compressive strength of composites was attributed to the interaction effects of the average grain size of the Ti matrix(d_m) and the volume fraction(V_f) and aspect ratio(A) of graphene. 展开更多

To simultaneously endow thermal conductivity, high glass transition temperature(Tg)and healing capability to glass fiber/epoxy(GFREP)composite,dynamic crosslinked epoxy resin bearing reversibleβ-hydroxyl ester bonds was reinforced with boron nitride nanosheets modified glass fiber cloth(GFC@BNNSs).The in-plane heat conduction paths were constructed by electrostatic self-assembly of polyacrylic acid treated GFC and polyethyleneimine decorated BNNSs.Then, the GFC@BNNSs were impregnated with the mixture of lower concentration(3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane grafted BN micron sheets,3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate and hexahydro-4-methylphthalic anhydride, which accounted for establishing the through-plane heat transport pathways and avoiding serious deterioration of mechanical performances. The resultant GFREP composite containing less boron nitride particles(17.6 wt%)exhibited superior in-plane(3.29 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1))and through-plane(1.16 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1))thermal conductivities,as well as high Tg of 204℃(Tg of the unfilled epoxy=177℃).The reversible transesterification reaction enabled closure of interlaminar cracks within the composite, achieving decent healing efficiencies estimated by means of tensile strength(71.2%),electrical breakdown strength(83.6%)and thermal conductivity(69.1%).The present work overcame the disadvantages of conventional thermally conductive composites, and provided an efficient approach to prolong the life span of thermally conductive GFREP laminate for high-temperature resistant integrated circuit application. 展开更多

Micromechanics investigations of composites with fiber-shaped reinforcement are extensively applied in the engineering design and theoretical analysis of thermal composites in the aerospace engineering and high-tech industry. In this paper,a critical review of various classical micromechanics approaches is provided based on the classification framework and the development of micromechanics tools.Several numerical micromechanics tools have been developed to overcome limitations through exactly/approximately solving the internal governing equations of microstructures. The connections and limitations of those models are also investigated and discussed, based on which three recently developed numerical or semi-analytical models are explained, including finite-element micromechanics,finite-volume direct averaging micromechanics, and locally exact homogenization theory,as well as machine learning tools.Since it is almost inevitable to mention the interfacial effects on thermal behavior of fibrous composites,we review the new mathematical relations that interrupt the original continuity conditions due to the existence of interphase/interface within unit cells.Generally speaking, the interphase/interface is demonstrated to play a significant role in influencing the effective coefficients and localized thermal fields. The present work also briefly reviews the application of micromechanics tools in emerging engineered woven composites, natural fibrous composites, and ablative thermal protection composites. It is demonstrated that sophisticated micromechanics tools are always demanded for investigating the effective and localized responses of thermal fibrous composites. 展开更多

This study was pertained to the effects of Ti coating on diamond surfaces and Si addition into Al matrix on the thermal conductivity(TC) and the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of diamond/Al composites by pressure infiltration. The fracture surfaces, interface microstructures by metal electro-etching and interfacial thermal conductance of the composites prepared by two methods were compared. The results reveal that Ti coating on diamond surfaces and only12.2 wt% Si addition into Al matrix could both improve the interfacial bonding and increase the TCs of the composites. But the Ti coating layer introduces more interfacial thermal barrier at the diamond/Al interface compared to adding 12.2 wt% Si into Al matrix. The diamond/Al composite with 12.2 wt% Si addition exhibits maximum TC of 534 W·m^-1·K^-1and a very low CTE of 8.9×10^-6K^-1,while the coating Ti-diamond/Al composite has a TC of 514 W·m^-1·K^-1 and a CTE of 11.0×10^-6K^-1. 展开更多

In the present work, the coefficients of thermal expansion(CTEs) of unidirectional(UD)fiber-reinforced composites are studied. First, an attempt is made to propose a model to predict both longitudinal and transverse CTEs of UD composites by means of thermo-elastic mechanics analysis. The proposed model is supposed to be a concentric cylinder with a transversely isotropic fiber embedded in an isotropic matrix, and it is subjected to a uniform temperature change. Then a concise and explicit formula is offered for each CTE. Finally, some finite element(FE) models are created by a finite element program MSC. Patran according to different material systems and fiber volume fractions. In addition, the available experimental data and results of other analytical solutions of CTEs are presented. Comparisons are made among the results of the cylinder model, the finite element method(FEM), experiments, and other solutions, which show that the predicted CTEs by the new model are in good agreement with the experimental data. In particular, transverse CTEs generally offer better agreements than those predicted by most of other solutions. 展开更多

Magnesium matrix composites reinforced with AlN particles were fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique.Different mixing methods were used in this study to control the distribution of Al N particles. The microstructure, thermal diffusivity and thermal expansion of the Mg–Al/Al N composites using different mixing methods were investigated. The results showed that the intergranular and intragranular distributions of Al N particles were obtained, respectively,by controlling the mixing methods. The composite with intragranular particles exhibited lower thermal diffusivity because of the existences of more interfaces, defects and grain boundaries, which acted as scattering centers and reduced the mean free path of electrons and phonons. The existence of Al N particles lowered the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE)and enhanced the dimensional stability of the composites. And the use of the improved mixing method further reduced the CTE of Mg–Al/Al N composites. 展开更多

Centrifugal casting was applied to produce cylindrical castings using SiCp/Al composite slurry, which contained 20%SiC particles. The castings comprised a particle free zone and a particle rich zone. The amount of SiC particles had a dramatic transformation from the particle rich zone to the particle free zone, and the maximum content of SiC particles in the particle rich zone reached up to 40 vol%.The ultimate tensile strength(UTS) of the as-cast SiCp / Al composites in the particle rich zone was 143 MPa,and the fracture was caused by the desorption of SiC particles from matrix alloy. The coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of the SiC_p / Al composites in the range of 20 and 100 ℃ was determined as 16.67×10^(-6) s^(-1),and the experimental CTE was lower than the predicted data based on the Kerner's model. The results show that the decrease in CTE in the case of the composites at high temperature stage can be attributed to the solute concentration of Si in Al and the plastic deformation of the matrix alloy in the composites with void architecture. 展开更多

Carbon fiber reinforced high density polyethylene multi-layered laminated composite panels(HDPE/CF MLCP) with excellent in-plane properties along transverse direction have been formulated. Composite architectures with carbon fiber(CF) designed in 2D layout in conventional composites can alleviate their properties in thickness direction, but all attempts so far developed have achieved restrained success. Here,we have exposed an approach to the high strength composite challenge, without altering the 2D stack design on the basis of concept of fiber reinforced laminated composites that would provide enhanced mechanical and thermal properties along transverse direction. CF sheets allowed the buckling of adjoining plies in 2D MLCP. We fabricated 2D MLCP by stacking the alternative CF and HDPE layers under different loading conditions, which resulted in high strength composites. These plies of CF and HDPE served as unit cells for MLCP, with CF offering much-needed fracture toughness and hardness to these materials. For 2D HDPE/CF MLCP, we demonstrated noteworthy improvement in physical and chemical interaction between CF and HDPE, in-plane fracture strain, flexural strength(30.684 MPa), bending modulus(7436.254 MPa), thermal stability(40.94%), and surface morphology, upon increasing the CF layers up to twenty, enabling these composites truly for high temperature and high strength applications. 展开更多

In order to improve the thermal storage capacity of expanded vermiculite(EV) based formstable composite PCM(FS-PCM) via organic modification of EV, first, EV was modified with a sodium stearate(Na St) as surface modifier, and organic EV(OEV) with hydrophobicity and higher adsorption capacity for fatty acid was obtained. A novel capric-stearic acid eutectic(CA-SA)/OEV FS-PCM with high thermal storage capacity was then developed. OEV and CA-SA/OEV were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermal gravimetry(TG), and thermal cycling test. Results showed that OEV has obvious hydrophobicity and a higher adsorption capacity for fatty acid. Its adsorption ratio has increased by 48.71% compared with that of EV. CA-SA/OEV possesses high thermal storage density(112.52 J/g), suitable melting temperature(20.49 ℃), good chemical compatibility, excellent thermal stability and reliability, indicating great application potential for building energy efficiency. The mechanical, electrical, and thermal expansion properties of carbon nanotube(CNT)-based silver and silver–palladium(10:1, w/w) alloy nanocomposites are reported. To tailor the properties of silver, CNTs were incorporated into a silver matrix by a modified molecular level-mixing process. CNTs interact weakly with silver because of their non-reactive nature and lack of mutual solubility. Therefore, palladium was utilized as an alloying element to improve interfacial adhesion. Comparative microstructural characterizations and property evaluations of the nanocomposites were performed. The structural characterizations revealed that decorated type-CNTs were dispersed, embedded, and anchored into the silver matrix. The experimental results indicated that the modification of the silver and silver–palladium nanocomposite with CNT resulted in increases in the hardness and Young's modulus along with concomitant decreases in the electrical conductivity and the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE). The hardness and Young's modulus of the nanocomposites were increased by 30%?40% whereas the CTE was decreased to 50%-60% of the CTE of silver. The significantly improved CTE and the mechanical properties of the CNT-reinforced silver and silver–palladium nanocomposites are correlated with the intriguing properties of CNTs and with good interfacial adhesion between the CNTs and silver as a result of the fabrication process and the contact action of palladium as an alloying element. 展开更多

SiCp/Cu composites with a compact microstructure were successfully fabricated by vacuum hot-pressing method. In order to suppress the detrimental interfacial reactions and ameliorate the interfacial bonding between copper and silicon carbide, molybdenum coating was deposited on the surface of silicon carbide by magnetron sputtering method and crystallized heat-treatment. The effects of the interfacial design on the thermo-physical properties of Si Cp/Cu composites were studied in detail. Thermal conductivity and expansion test results showed that silicon carbide particles coated with uniform and compact molybdenum coating have improved the comprehensive thermal properties of the Si Cp/Cu composites. Furthermore, the adhesion of the interface between silicon carbide and copper was significantly strengthened after molybdenum coating. Si Cp/Cu composites with a maximum thermal conductivity of 274.056 W/(m·K) and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 9 ppm/K were successfully prepared when the volume of silicon carbide was about 50%, and these Si Cp/Cu composites have potential applications for the electronic packageing of the high integration electronic devices. 展开更多
