Much research has identified the underlying factors for truck crashes. However, few studies detected the factors unique to single and multiple crashes, and none have examined these underlying factors to severe truck crashes in conjunction with violation data. The current research assessed all of these factors using two approaches to improve truck safety. The first approach used ordinal logistic regression to investigate the contributory factors that increased the odds of severe single-truck and multiple-vehicle crashes, with involvement of at least one truck. The literature has indicated that past violations can be used to predict future violations and crashes. Therefore, the second approach used risky violations, related to truck crashes, to identify the contributory factors to the risky violations and truck crashes. Driver actions of failure to keep proper lane following too close and driving too fast for conditions accounted for about 40% of all the truck crashes. Therefore, the same violations as the aforementioned driver actions were included in the analysis. Based on ordinal logistic regression, the analysis for the first approach indicated that being under non-normal conditions at the time of crash, driving on dry-road condition and having a distraction in the cabin are some of the factors that increase the odds of severe single-truck crashes. On the other hand, speed compliance, alcohol involvement, and posted speed limits are some of the variables that impacted the severity of multiple-vehicle, truck-involved crashes. With the second approach, the violations related to risky driver actions, which were underlying causes of severe truck crashes, were identified and analysis was run to identify the groups at increased risk of truck-involved crashes. The results of violations indicated that being nonresident, driving offpeak hours, and driving on weekends could increase the risk of truck-involved crashes. This paper offers an insight into the capability of using violation data, in addition to crash data, in identification of possible countermeasures to reduce crash frequency.展开更多

Trucks deliver 70% of all freight tonnage while 80% of U.S. communities receive goods exclusively by truck. The motor carrier industry provides jobs, generating significant income and tax revenue, representing approximately 5% of U.S. GDP (gross domestic product). Despite one of every 13 people employed in a trucking-related job, there is a significant driver shortage. The ATA (American Trucking Associations) currently projects a shortage of 20,000 to 25,000 drivers in the for-hire truckload market. Women are well positioned to address this shortage. In 2011, women represented 7% of total employment in the U.S. trucking industry. The purpose of this study was to identify truck design needs for women truck drivers. This research is significant due to limited data sources about truck design needs for women drivers. This study also contributes to the body of knowledge about women in the trucking industry. In response, a 33-question survey was developed using QualtricsTM survey software. In April, 2012, an electronic survey was distributed to 663 Women in Trucking Association members over a two-week period with a response rate of 18%. Results were separated into quantitative and qualitative data and analyzed accordingly. Adjustability was a central issue facing women truck drivers. Recommendations for seat design, side mirrors, steps, handrails, hydraulic hood lifters, and steering consoles will be presented. Wood transportation in Greece is carried out, almost exclusively, by trucks. The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of timber trucking in Greece through the analysis of wood transportation waybills. A total of 1,471 waybills have been collected and analyzed that cover the period 1981-2008 from nine of the most productive and representative forest districts in Greece, in terms of timber production. The final dataset included information on the type and technical characteristics of truck types, the transported wood quantities and haulage distances. Furthermore, data on the wood transportation cost for the year 2010 have been collected and analyzed. According to the results, the number of two-axle trucks that dominated in the 1980s is reducing rapidly, mostly to the benefit of larger three-axle and four-axle trucks. More than three quarters (77%) of wood transportation is conducted in the period June-October. Mean vehicle load per vehicle type differs between conifer and broadleaved species from 7.1% up to 23.9%. Transportation of stacked wood with semitrailers is conducted with overloaded trucks, which could entail serious problems for public safety and the condition of road network. New design standards will enhance serviceability of the wood transportation routes and environmental protection.展开更多

The weighted root-mean-square(RMS) acceleration responses of the vertical driver 's seat, the pitch and roll angle of the cab, and the dynamic load coefficient(DLC) are chosen as objective functions, and the air suspension system is optimized and analyzed by the semi-active fuzzy control algorithm when vehicles operate under different operation conditions. The results show that the influence of the roll angle of the cab on the heavy truck ride comfort is clear when vehicles move on the road surface conditions of the ISO level D and ISO level E at a velocity over 27.5 m/s. The weighted RMS acceleration responses of vertical driver' s seat, the pitch and roll angle of the cab are decreased by 24%, 30% and 25%, respectively, when vehicles move on the road surface condition of the ISO level B at a velocity of 20 m/s. The value of the DLC also significantly decreases when vehicles operate under different operation conditions. Particularly, the DLC value of the tractor driver axle is greatly reduced by 27.4% when the vehicle operates under a vehicle fully-loaded condition on the road surface condition of ISO level B at a velocity of 27.5 m/s.展开更多

A new federal law has been approved to limit truck drivers' working times, including maximum continuous driving time and maximum daily and weekly on-duty time. We present a study that aims at analyzing whether the existing resting areas on federal highways have sufficient capacity to meet current and future demand for truck stops. We have established the following method: In the first step, we review and study different models found in the literature and evaluate their potential application to Brazilian conditions; In the next step, we develop our own model and, finally, validate it using data from BR-101 Federal Highway, in Santa Catarina State. Tests made using part of collected data (which were subjected to statistical treatment) showed satisfactory results, indicating that the demand behavior was consistent with that observed in the field and the answers provided by truck drivers in the interviews. The research has yet to complete processing all data and it also must be repeated in other regions with different characteristics.展开更多

There are strict federal guidelines for commercial truck driver rest periods. Rest areas and private truck stops are the only places for the trucks to stop legally and safely. In locations without sufficient parking areas, trucks often park on interstate ramps, which create safety risks for other interstate motorists. Historically, agencies have employed costly and time intensive manual counting methods, camera surveillance, and driver surveys to assess truck parking. Connected truck data, available in near real-time, offers an efficient alternative to practitioners to assess truck parking patterns and identify areas where there may be insufficient safe parking spaces. This paper presents a case study of interstate I-70 in east central Indiana and documents the observed spatiotemporal impacts of a rest area closure on truck parking on nearby interstate ramps. Results showed that there was a 28% increase in parking on ramps during the rest area closure. Analysis also found that ramps closest to the rest area were most impacted by the closure, seeing a rise in truck parking sessions as high as 2.7 times. Parking duration on the ramps during rest area closure also increased drastically. Although it was expected that this would result in increased parking by trucks on adjacent ramps, this before, during, after scenario provided an ideal scenario to evaluate the robustness of these techniques to assess changing parking characteristics of long-haul commercial trucks. The data analytics and visualization tools presented in this study are scalable nationwide and will aid stakeholders in informed data-driven decision making when allocating resources towards improving the nations commercial vehicle parking infrastructure.展开更多

The impact factors of dynamic tire loads, including the dynamic load stress factors, and the maximal and the minimal vertical dynamic load factors, are used to evaluate the dynamic interaction between heavy vehicles and roads under the condition of random road surface roughness. Matlab/Simulink is used to simulate the nonlinear dynamic system and calculate the impact factors. The effects of different road surface conditions on the safety of vehicle movement and the durability of parts of a vehicle are analyzed, as well as the effects of different structural parameters and different vehicle speeds on road surfaces. The study results provide both the warning limits of road surface roughness and the limits of corresponding dynamic parameters for the 5-axle heavy truck.展开更多

By combining linear quadratic regulator(LQR) with genetic algorithm(GA), the designed controller is used to control linear and angular velocities on the midpoint of the front frame. The novel controller based on the error dynamics model is eventually realized to track the path high-precisely with constant speed. The results of simulation and experiment show that the LQR-GA controller has a better tracking performance than the existing methods under a low speed of 3 m/s. In this paper, kinematics model and simulation control models based on co-simulation of ADAMS and Matlab/Simulink are established to verify the proposed strategy. In addition, a real vehicle experiment is designed to further more correctness of the conclusion. With the proposed controller and considering the steering model in the simulation, the control performance is improved and matches the actual situation better. The research results contribute to the development of automation of ADT.展开更多

The forces, their positions and weight distribution during braking and the forces and rolling moment during turning were calculated. The reliability of the calculation method was validated by comparisons with experimental results. The results showed that during braking, liquid splashes in the tank and the maximum forces and G (the ratio of weight acting on the front axle to the rear axle) are large when A (the ratio of the arch area above the baffle to the area of cross section)≤0.1. When A≥0.2,as the position of the baffle is lowered, the maximum of Fx (the force in direction x) first decreases then increases, and the maximum of Fy (the force in direction y) and G increase. During turning, liquid splashes in the tank and the maximum forces and M (the rolling moment) are large when D (the ratio of the arch area above the baffle to the area of cross section)≤0.2. When D≥0.3,as the position of the baffle is lowered, the maximums of Fy,Fz (the force in direction z) and M increase.展开更多

However, existing research mainly focuses on two-axle vehicles and controllers are mostly designed to use one control method to improve the other. Moreover, many experiments are needed to improve the robustness; therefore, these control methods are underutilized. This paper proposes an integrated control system specially designed for multi-axle vehicles, in which the desired lateral force and yaw moment of vehicles are determined by the sliding mode control algorithm. The output of the sliding mode control is distributed to the suitable wheels based on the abilities and potentials of the two control methods. Moreover, in this method, fewer experiments are needed, and the robustness and simultaneity are both guaranteed. To simplify the optimization system and to improve the computation speed, seven simple optimization subsystems are designed for the determination of control outputs on each wheel. The simulation results show that the proposed controller obviously enhances the stability of multi-axle trucks. The system improves 68% of the safe velocity, and its performance is much better than both di erential braking and active steering. This research proposes an integrated control system that can simultaneously invoke di erential braking and active steering of multi-axle vehicles to fully utilize the abilities and potentials of the two control methods.展开更多

New design standards will enhance serviceability of the wood transportation routes and environmental protection.

文摘In order to analyze and evaluate the performance of the air suspension system of heavy trucks with semi-active fuzzy control, a three-dimensional nonlinear dynamical model of a typical heavy truck with 16-DOF(degree of freedom) is established based on Matlab/Simulink software. Particularly, the DLC value of the tractor driver axle is greatly reduced by 27.4% when the vehicle operates under a vehicle fully-loaded condition on the road surface condition of ISO level B at a velocity of 27.5 m/s.
文摘According to Brazilian reports of large trucks accidents on Federal Highway, fatigue and speeding are the major contributors to those accidents in which drivers are trying to meet short delivery deadlines for long hauls. The research has yet to complete processing all data and it also must be repeated in other regions with different characteristics.
文摘Ensuring adequate access to truck parking is critical to the safe and efficient movement of freight traffic. The data analytics and visualization tools presented in this study are scalable nationwide and will aid stakeholders in informed data-driven decision making when allocating resources towards improving the nations commercial vehicle parking infrastructure.

文摘Based on the analysis of nonlinear geometric characteristics of the suspension systems and tires, a 3D nonlinear dynamic model of a typical heavy truck is established. The study results provide both the warning limits of road surface roughness and the limits of corresponding dynamic parameters for the 5-axle heavy truck.

文摘This paper designs a novel controller to improve the path-tracking performance of articulated dump truck(ADT). The research results contribute to the development of automation of ADT.
文摘The influence of baffle position on liquid sloshing during the braking and turning of a tank truck was studied using a volume of fluid (VOF) model. When D≥0.3,as the position of the baffle is lowered, the maximums of Fy,Fz (the force in direction z) and M increase.

文摘The petrol truck routing problem is an important part of the petrol supply chain. This study focuses on determining routes for distributing petrol products from a depot to petrol stations with the objective of minimizing the total travel cost and the fixed cost required to use the trucks. We propose a mathematical model that considers petrol trucks returning to a depot multiple times and develop a heuristic algorithm based on a local branch-and-bound search with a tabu list and the Metropolis acceptance criterion. In addition,an approach that accelerates the solution process by adding several valid inequalities is presented. In this study, the trucks are homogeneous and have two compartments, and each truck can execute at most three tasks daily. The sales company arranges the transfer amount and the time windows for each station. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by comparing its results with the optimal results. In addition,a real-world case of routing petrol trucks in Beijing is studied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

文摘Di erential braking and active steering have already been integrated to overcome their shortcomings. This research proposes an integrated control system that can simultaneously invoke di erential braking and active steering of multi-axle vehicles to fully utilize the abilities and potentials of the two control methods.
