Real-time in vivo structure-function study of scalp hair cycles:an experimental approach for monitoring living hair roots with a 20-year follow-up

Aim:This study presents an experimental approach for the long-term(16 years)in vivo observation of deeper structures in human scalp hair follicles,focusing on shortened hair cycles.When hair follicles entered a prolonged dormancy stage(3 years),rapid regrowth of thinning hair was stimulated by the topical application of a drug approved for promoting hair growth.Methods:While intra-epidermal chambers were ineffective as recipient sites,the most superficial dermal implantation proved successful for heterotopic transplantation of single scalp hair follicle grafts,enabling hair growth during successive cycles.Results:The study confirms the known reduction in daily hair growth rates while maintaining hair diameter.Notably,a unique and exceptional“non-correlation”was observed between scalp hair diameter and linear growth rates.While the initial shortening of the hair cycle duration was recorded in the first 3 years post-grafting,a further reduction eventually led to a“dormancy”phase in the long term(16 years post-grafting).Pharmacodynamics revealed that reactivation of hair production,following less than 3 months of topical application of a 5%minoxidil solution,suggested very slow daily growth rates and a substantial reduction in hair diameter.Conclusion:The initial findings suggest that non-invasive methods can be used for real-time structural-functional observation of scalp hair roots,enabling the study of cellular activity and movement during successive phases of the hair cycle,including aging and drug effects. 展开更多

Controlled clinical trial for evaluation of hair growth with low dose cyclical nutrition therapy in men and women without the use of finasteride 被引量:1

Aim: To evaluate possible results with the stimulation use of minoxidil and the strengthening of hair roots with nutritional cyclical supplements, resulting in increased hair regrowth, without the use of anti androgens and enzyme blockers. Methods: This prospective controlled clinical trial compares the current acknowledged form of treatment for hair loss within two controlled groups for both men and women against the use of cyclical nutritional therapy and minoxidil 2%. One hundred patients in each of the 4 groups, a total of 400 patients, were followed for 1 year. The progress was evaluated every 2 months with computerised measurements of hair density, hair calibre, global photography and uniquely designed self-assessment scores. Results: The use of nutritional supplements showed consistent improvements in both treatment groups of men and women against the controlled groups with a correction of hair fall and minimum 18% increased density within 2 months with further improvement to a maximum of 156% over 1 year. Conclusion: Hair loss occurs when weak, sensitive, follicles are affected by multiple causes. Hair regrowth can be achieved consistently and safely by strengthening the hair roots and promoting hair growth without necessarily depending on the use of anti androgens. 展开更多

Introduction:Anagen effluvium (AE) is caused by impaired mitotic activity of matrix cells in the hair follicles.It presents with sudden loss of hair and myelosuppression.The diagnosis is based on the clinical history,trichoscopy,and trichogram.Case presentation:A 20-year-old woman presented with sudden loss of hair following treatment with oral azathioprine.Evaluation of the TPMT were within normal limits both in genotype and phenotype levels.Hair pull test was positive.Trichoscopy revealed yellow dots and multiple black dots,empty yellow dots,dark lines,upright regrowing hairs,and circle hairs.Azathioprine was stopped,and minoxidil 5% and oral multivitamin were started.Posttreatment trichoscopic analysis revealed terminal hairs and upright regrowing hairs.Discussion:AE is characterized by abrupt loss of anagen hairs due to impaired metabolic activity.Trichoscopy in AE shows coudability hairs,black dots,exclamation mark hairs,multiple broken shafts,and regrowing hairs.Empty yellow dots,yellow dots with black dots,pigtail hairs,and dark lines were additional features in this study.Conclusion:Trichoscopy assists in the accurate diagnosis of AE.Adverse effects of azathioprine can be observed even with normal TPMT levels.Weekly monitoring is therefore of prime importance. 展开更多
