Rock brittleness is a critical property in geotechnical and energy engineering,as it directly influences the prediction of rock failure and stability assessment.Although numerous methods have been developed to evaluate brittleness, many fail to comprehensively account for the impacts of microstructural changes, mineralogical characteristics, and stress conditions on energy evolution during failure. This study proposes a novel approach for brittleness evaluation based on the energy evolution throughout the post-peak failure process, integrating two micromechanical mechanisms:crack propagation and frictional sliding.A new brittleness index is defined as the ratio of generated surface energy to released elastic energy, providing a unified framework for assessing both Class I and Class II mechanical behaviors. The brittleness of cyan, white, and gray sandstones was investigated under various confining pressures and moisture conditions using X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and conventional triaxial compression(CTC)tests. The results demonstrate that brittleness decreases with increasing confining pressure, due to suppressed crack propagation, and increases under saturated conditions,as moisture enhances crack propagation.By establishing connections between mineral composition, microstructural features, and stress-induced responses, the proposed method overcame limitations of previous approaches and offered a more precise tool for evaluating rock brittleness under diverse environmental scenarios. 展开更多

To study the influence of support timing and support strength on the mechanical properties and deformation damage characteristics of a single-sided unloaded rock mass,a true triaxial perturbation unloaded rock testing system was used to conduct rock damage tests on sandstone with different support timing and strength paths.Based on the acoustic emission monitoring system, the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of the whole process of rock body loaded instability under two stress paths were studied, and the mechanism of the reinforcing effect of stress support on the unloaded rock mass was analyzed. The results show that, within the scope of this study, both earlier applications of shoring and an increase in shoring strength can effectively improve the ultimate bearing capacity of the unloaded rock, which increases the ultimate bearing capacity of the unloaded rock mass by 60.31% and 54.96%,respectively;There is a phenomenon of rebound deformation of the rock mass during sudden changes in stress(single-sided unloading, stress support),which shows opposite expansion and compression platforms on the stress−strain curve; The crack evolution of unloaded rock under different stress support conditions shows the state law of"initial crack activation→middle steady state expansion→late main crack penetration",and the lagging support significantly accelerates the crack evolution from local activation to main penetration; The single-sided unloading and stress-supporting stages have less influence on the unloading deformationsσ_(1u),σ_(2u) and support deformationsσ_(1) t,σ_(2t) in theσ_(1) andσ_(2)directions,while they show significant response characteristics toσ_(3u),σ_(vu) and σ_(3) t,σ_(vt),and with the increase of the support strength, the stress-supporting stagesσ_(3) t,σ_(vt) gradually increase and exceed the deformations generated by the unloading stagesσ_(3u),σ_(vu);The increase of support strength can effectively compensate for the rock stress loss caused by unloading, which makes the maximum, minimum, and volumetric strain support coefficients during the loading and unloading of the rock body increase gradually while the effect on the intermediate principal strain support coefficient is small;During loading, the support strength of rock masses seeks a new bearing area by regulating stress equilibrium states. This process primarily manifests as a shift in the locations of the crushing zone and the main bearing area, accompanied by a corresponding transformation in failure patterns.Consequently, the rock mass transitions from asymmetric three-zone damage under no or weak support to approximate symmetric three-zone damage under strong support.Simultaneously, the main load-bearing area of the rock mass shifts from deep bearing in the unsupported to middle bearing under strong support as the support strength increases. 展开更多

The stress-strain behavior of calcareous sand is significantly influencedby particle breakage(B)and initial relative density(Dri),but few constitutive models consider their combined effects. To bridge this gap,we conducted a series of triaxial tests on calcareous sand with varying Dri and stress paths, examining particle breakage and critical state behavior.Key findingsinclude:(1)At a constant stress ratio(η),B follows a hyperbolic relationship with mean effective stress(p'),and for a given p',B increases proportionally withη;(2)The critical state line(CSL)moves downward with increasing Dri,whereas the critical state friction angle(φcs)decreases with increasing B.Based on these findings,we propose a unifiedbreakage evolution model to quantify particle breakage in calcareous sand under various loading conditions.Integrating this model with the Normal Consolidation Line(NCL)and CSL equations,we successfully simulate the steepening of NCL and CSL slopes as B increases with the onset of particle breakage.Furthermore,we quantitatively evaluate the effect of B onφcs.Finally, within the framework of Critical State Soil Mechanics and Hypoplasticity theory,we develop a hypoplastic model incorporating B and Dri.The model is validated through strong agreement with experimental results across various initial relative densities, stress paths and drainage conditions. 展开更多

High geo-stress and high temperature in deep rock engineering increase the possibility of engineering and geological disasters in discontinuous rocks. However, the influence of thermomechanical coupling on the shear behavior and damage evolution of prefractured granite remains immature. In this context, true triaxial laboratory tests and discrete element method simulations under different confining pressures(σ3=3 MPa,σ2=4 MPa,andσ3=80 MPa,σ2=100 MPa)and temperatures(25℃-500℃)were carried out on rough granite fractures with two different orientations. Results indicate that high temperature and high confining pressure increase the peak strength of the prefractured specimen, leading to more microcracks in the host rock and more gouges between the surfaces.Thermal strengthening at low temperatures(<300℃)and residual stick-slip only occur under a greater confining pressure for prefractured specimens.High confining pressure suppresses generation of the thermal microcracks in the heating stage.Cracks first initiate in the asperities on the fracture surfaces, and then propagate into the rock matrix during the mechanical loading stage. In addition, prefractured granite with a larger fracture angle is characterized by smaller peak and residual strength, faster residual slip, fewer new cracks on the specimen surface, and a more pronounced thermal strengthening effect on peak strength. The slip tendency analysis indicates that a higher maximum principal stress(s1)and a large fracture angle(45°-75°)generally result in a higher potential for fracture slip or activation. This study will contribute to a better understanding of the fracture shear mechanism under true triaxial thermomechanical coupling conditions and provides new insights into the stability evaluation of deep dynamic geological hazards. 展开更多

To investigate the damage evolution caused by stress-driven and sub-critical crack propagation within the Beishan granite under multi-creep triaxial compressive conditions, the distributed optical fiber sensing and X-ray computed tomography were combined to obtain the strain distribution over the sample surface and internal fractures of the samples. The Gini and skewness(G-S)coefficients were used to quantify strain localization during tests, where the Gini coefficient reflects the degree of clustering of elements with high strain values,i.e.,strain localization/delocalization.The strain localization-induced asymmetry of data distribution is quantified by the skewness coefficient.A precursor to granite failure is defined by the rapid and simultaneous increase of the G-S coefficients, which are calculated from strain increment, giving an earlier warning of failure by about 8%peak stress than those from absolute strain values. Moreover, the process of damage accumulation due to stress-driven crack propagation in Beishan granite is different at various confining pressures as the stress exceeds the crack initiation stress.Concretely, strain localization is continuous until brittle failure at higher confining pressure, while both strain localization and delocalization occur at lower confining pressure.Despite the different stress conditions,a similar statistical characteristic of strain localization during the creep stage is observed. The Gini coefficient increases, and the skewness coefficient decreases slightly as the creep stress is below 95%peak stress. When the accelerated strain localization begins, the Gini and skewness coefficients increase rapidly and simultaneously. 展开更多

Internal structural defects in engineering rock masses vary in size, exhibit complex shapes, and are unevenly distributed.Dominant fractures within a rock mass often play a critical to its mechanical behavior, directly affecting the macromechanical properties and failure modes. These fractures affect the instability and failure of the surrounding rock, significantlyimpacting the overall stability of engineering structures.Herein,sand-powder three-dimensional(3D)printing technology was used to prepare rock-like specimens with internal fracture networks.Triaxial compression testing,post-failure fracture mapping, and fractal dimension analysis of the fracture surfaces were conducted to investigate the effects of dominant fracture angles on the strength and deformation of rocks with internal fracture networks under triaxial stress. The results indicate that the dominant fracture angle has a pronounced effect on the mechanical behavior of rock. With increasing angle, both compressive strength and elastic modulus exhibit an initial decline followed by an increase. Moreover, higher confiningpressure significantlyimproves the compressive strength of fractured rock. This enhancement weakens as the confiningpressure further increases. Moreover, with increasing confiningpressure, the differences between the maximum and minimum values of elastic moduli and lateral strain ratios in fractured rock gradually decrease. Thus, the impact of the dominant fracture angle on rock mass deformation decreases with increasing confiningpressure. This research elucidates the effects of dominant fracture angles on the mechanical and failure properties of complex fractured rock masses and the influenceof the confiningpressure on these relationships. It provides valuable theoretical insights and practical guidance for stability analyses in engineering rock masses. 展开更多

During deep coal mining,an instability failure of coal usually occurs under the combined effect of initial damage and triaxial cyclic loading and unloading(TCLU).Therefore, this study investigated the impact of initial damage on mechanical behavior and acoustic emission(AE)characteristics of coal under TCLU.Initial damage variables(IDVs)of coal specimens were quantified using preloading, followed by TCLU experiments to assess the deformation, energy distribution, and fracture development. The results revealed that the increase in IDVs significantly reduced the structural integrity of coal specimens, increased the cumulative irreversible strain, and enhanced the dissipated energy owing to microfracture expansion. Moreover,AE monitoring showed earlier activation of fractures and a higher occurrence of large-scale rupture events of coal specimens with high IDVs,which correlated with decreasing AE b values(reflecting the different scales of fracture within specimens)and increasing S values(reflecting the AE activity within specimens).Additionally, computed tomography analysis revealed intensified fracture networks and increasing three-dimensional fractal dimensions of coal specimens with higher IDVs.Finally, the coupling effect of TCLU and initial damage on the weakening mechanism of coal was investigated.Initial damage significantly reduced the structural integrity of coal by increasing the number of weak planes within coal specimens, contributing to the earlier activation and rapid expansion of fractures at low stress levels under TCLU and eventually accelerating the weakening process of coal. This study provides a scientific basis and theoretical support for the prevention and control of dynamic disasters in deep coal mining. 展开更多

The real-time monitoring of fracture propagation during hydraulic fracturing is crucial for obtaining a deeper understanding of fracture morphology and optimizing hydraulic fracture designs.Accurate measurements of key fracture parameters, such as the fracture height and width, are particularly important to ensure efficient oilfield development and precise fracture diagnosis. This study utilized the optical frequency domain reflectometer(OFDR)technique in physical simulation experiments to monitor fractures during indoor true triaxial hydraulic fracturing experiments. The results indicate that the distributed fiber optic strain monitoring technology can efficiently capture the initiation and expansion of fractures. In horizontal well monitoring, the fiber strain waterfall plot can be used to interpret the fracture width, initiation location, and expansion speed. The fiber response can be divided into three stages:strain contraction convergence, strain band formation, and postshutdown strain rate reversal. When the fracture does not contact the fiber,a dual peak strain phenomenon occurs in the fiber and gradually converges as the fracture approaches.During vertical well monitoring in adjacent wells, within the effective monitoring range of the fiber, the axial strain produced by the fiber can represent the fracture height with an accuracy of 95.6%relative to the actual fracture height. This study provides a new perspective on real-time fracture monitoring. The response patterns of fiber-induced strain due to fractures can help us better understand and assess the dynamic fracture behavior, offering significant value for the optimization of oilfield development and fracture diagnostic techniques. 展开更多

To more accurately describe the coal damage and fracture evolution law during liquid nitrogen(LN_(2))fracturing under true triaxial stress,a thermal-hydraulic-mechanical-damage(THMD)coupling model for LN_(2) fracturing coal was developed, considering the coal heterogeneity and thermophysical parameters of nitrogen. The accuracy and applicability of model were verified by comparing with LN_(2) injection pre-cooling and fracturing experimental data. The effects of different pre-cooling times and horizontal stress ratios on coal damage evolution, permeability, temperature distribution, and fracture characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the permeability and damage of the coal increase exponentially, while the temperature decreases exponentially during the fracturing process. As the pre-cooling time increases, the damage range of the coal expands, and the fracture propagation becomes more pronounced. The initiation pressure and rupture pressure decrease and tend to stabilize with longer precooling times. As the horizontal stress ratio increases, fractures preferentially extend along the direction of maximum horizontal principal stress, leading to a significant decrease in both initiation and rupture pressures. At a horizontal stress ratio of 3,the initiation pressure drops by 48.07%,and the rupture pressure decreases by 41.36%.The results provide a theoretical basis for optimizing LN_(2) fracturing techniques and improving coal seam modification. 展开更多

A series of true triaxial unloading tests are conducted on sandstone specimens with a single structural plane to investigate their mechanical behaviors and failure characteristics under different in situ stress states. The experimental results indicate that the dip angle of structural plane(θ)and the intermediate principal stress(σ2)have an important influence on the peak strength, cracking mode, and rockburst severity. The peak strength exhibits a first increase and then decrease as a function ofσ2 for a constantθ.However,whenσ2 is constant, the maximum peak strength is obtained atθof 90°,and the minimum peak strength is obtained atθof 30°or 45°.For the case of an inclined structural plane, the crack type at the tips of structural plane transforms from a mix of wing and anti-wing cracks to wing cracks with an increase inσ2,while the crack type around the tips of structural plane is always anti-wing cracks for the vertical structural plane, accompanied by a series of tensile cracks besides. The specimens with structural plane do not undergo slabbing failure regardless ofθ,and always exhibit composite tensile-shear failure whatever theσ2 value is.With an increase inσ2 andθ,the intensity of the rockburst is consistent with the tendency of the peak strength.By analyzing the relationship between the cohesion(c),internal friction angle(φ),andθin sandstone specimens,we incorporateθinto the true triaxial unloading strength criterion, and propose a modified linear Mogi-Coulomb criterion. Moreover, the crack propagation mechanism at the tips of structural plane, and closure degree of the structural plane under true triaxial unloading conditions are also discussed and summarized. This study provides theoretical guidance for stability assessment of surrounding rocks containing geological structures in deep complex stress environments. 展开更多

The mechanical behavior of cemented gangue backfill materials(CGBMs)is closely related to particle size distribution(PSD)of aggregates and properties of cementitious materials.Consequently, the true triaxial compression tests,CT scanning,SEM,and EDS tests were conducted on cemented gangue backfill samples(CGBSs)with various carbon nanotube concentrations(P_(CNT))that satisfied fractal theory for the PSD of aggregates. The mechanical properties, energy dissipations, and failure mechanisms of the CGBSs under true triaxial compression were systematically analyzed. The results indicate that appropriate carbon nanotubes(CNTs)effectively enhance the mechanical properties and energy dissipations of CGBSs through micropore filling and microcrack bridging, and the optimal effect appears at P_(CNT)of 0.08wt%.Taking PSD fractal dimension(D)of 2.500 as an example, compared to that of CGBS without CNT,the peak strength(σ_(p)),axial peak strain(ε_(1,p)),elastic strain energy(Ue),and dissipated energy(U_(d))increased by 12.76%,29.60%,19.05%,and90.39%,respectively.However,excessive CNTs can reduce the mechanical properties of CGBSs due to CNT agglomeration, manifesting a decrease inρ_(p),ε_(1,p),and the volumetric strain increment(Δε_(v))when P_(CNT)increases from 0.08wt%to 0.12wt%.Moreover,the addition of CNTs improved the integrity of CGBS after macroscopic failure, and crack extension in CGBSs appeared in two modes:detour and pass through the aggregates.Theσ_(p)and U_(d)firstly increase and then decrease with increasing D,and porosity shows the opposite trend.Theε_(1,p)andΔε_(v)are negatively correlated with D,and CGBS with D=2.150 has the maximum deformation parameters(ε_(1,p)=0.05079,Δε_(v)=0.01990)due to the frictional slip effect caused by coarse aggregates. With increasing D,the failure modes of CGBSs are sequentially manifested as oblique shear failure,"Y-shaped"shear failure, and conjugate shear failure. 展开更多

Triaxial testing serves as a fundamental method for evaluating the elastic and strength properties of rocks, crucial for developing accurate 3D geomechanical models. This paper presents a novel method for determining strength parameters by incorporating the dependence of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)on P-wave velocity into the Hoek-Brown criterion.Additionally,a new approach is introduced to process triaxial test data efficiently using Python libraries such as SciPy,NumPy,Matplotlib, and Pandas.Furthermore, the paper addresses challenges in determining elastic parameters through triaxial testing.A Python script is developed to automate the calculation of elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio,over-coming subjectivity in selecting the linear portion of stress-strain curves. The script optimally identifies the linear region by minimizing the fit error with appropriate constraints, ensuring a more objective and standardized approach. The proposed methodologies are demonstrated using limestone specimens from Central Asian gas fields. These innovations offer faster, more reliable results, reducing error and enhancing the comparability of analyses in geomechanics, with potential applications across various geological settings. 展开更多

The spatial relationship between structural planes and principal stresses significantly affects the mechanical properties of deep hard rock. This paper examines the effect of the loading angle under true triaxial compression. While previous studies focused on the angleβbetween the maximum principal stress and the structural plane, the role of angleω,between the intermediate principal stress and the structural plane,is often overlooked.Utilizing artificially prefabricated granite specimens with a single non-penetrating structural plane,we set the loading angleβto range from 0°to 90°across seven groups, and assignedωvalues of 0°and 90°in two separate groups. The results show that the peak strength is negatively correlated withβup to 45°,beyond which it tends to stabilize. The angleωexerts a strengthening effect on the peak strength.Deformation mainly occurs post-peak,with the strain values ε_(1) and ε_(3) reaching levels 2−3 times higher than those in intact rock. The structural plane significantly influences failure mode whenω=0°,while failure localizes near the σ_(3) surface of the specimens whenω=90°.The findings enhance data on structural plane rocks under triaxial compression and inform theoretical research, excavation, and support design of rock structures. 展开更多

Geomechanical properties of rocks vary across different measurement scales, primarily due to heterogeneity.Micro-scale geomechanical tests, including micro-scale“scratch tests”and nano-scale nanoindentation tests, are attractive at different scales. Each method requires minimal sample volume,is low cost, and includes a relatively rapid measurement turnaround time. However, recent micro-scale test results–including scratch test results and nanoindentation results–exhibit tangible variance and uncertainty, suggesting a need to correlate mineral composition mapping to elastic modulus mapping to isolate the relative impact of specific minerals.Different research labs often utilize different interpretation methods, and it is clear that future micro-mechanical tests may benefit from standardized testing and interpretation procedures. The objectives of this study are to seek options for standardized testing and interpretation procedures, through two specific objectives:(1)Quantify chemical and physical controls on micro-mechanical properties and(2)Quantify the source of uncertainties associated with nanoindentation measurements. To reach these goals,we conducted mechanical tests on three different scales:triaxial compression tests, scratch tests, and nanoindentation tests. We found that mineral phase weight percentage is highly correlated with nanoindentation elastic modulus distribution. Finally,we conclude that nanoindentation testing is a mineralogy and microstructure-based method and generally yields significant uncertainty and overestimation. The uncertainty of the testing method is largely associated with not mapping pore space a priori.Lastly, the uncertainty can be reduced by combining phase mapping and modulus mapping with substantial and random data sampling. 展开更多

After excavation, some of the surrounding rock mass is in a state of triaxial extension, exhibiting tensile or shear fracture modes. To study the energy mechanism of tensile fracture turning to shear fracture,a series of triaxial extension tests were conducted on sandstone under confining pressures of 10,30,50 and 70 MPa.Elastic energy and dissipated energy were separated by single unloading, the input energy u_(t),elastic energy u_(e),and dissipated energy u_(d)at different unloading stress levels were calculated by the integrating stress−strain curves. The results show that tensile cracks dominate fracture under lower confining pressure(10 MPa),and shear cracks play an increasingly important role in fracture as confining pressure increases(30,50 and 70 MPa).Based on the phenomenon that u_(e)and u_(d)increase linearly with increasing u_(t),a possible energy distribution mechanism of fracture mode transition under triaxial extension was proposed. In addition,it was found that peak energy storage capacity is more sensitive to confining pressure compared to elastic energy conversion capacity. 展开更多

This study takes shale samples from the Jiaoshiba block in the Fuling shale gas field of the Sichuan Basin, and uses the true triaxial testing system to conduct a series of mechanical experiments under deep shale reservoir conditions after shale hydration.Stress-strain data and mechanical parameters of shale after hydration under high temperature and high pressure were obtained to investigate the effects of reservoir temperature, hydration time and horizontal stress difference on the mechanical strength of shale after hydration.By using nonlinear regression and interpolation methods,a prediction model for the mechanical strength of shale after hydration was constructed, and the mechanical strength chart of deep shale under high stress difference was plotted.First, higher hydration temperature, longer hydration reaction time, and greater horizontal stress difference cause shale to enter the yield stage earlier during the compression process after hydration and to exhibit more prominent plastic characteristics, lower peak strength, peak strain, residual strength and elastic modulus, and higher Poisson's ratio.Second, the longer the hydration time, the smaller the impact of hydration temperature on the mechanical strength of deep shale is.As the horizontal stress difference increases, the peak strength and residual strength weaken intensely, and the peak strain, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio deteriorate slowly.Third, the mechanical strength of shale decreases significantly in the first 5 days of hydration, but gradually stabilizes as the hydration time increases.Fourth, the visual mechanical strength chart helps to understand the post-fracturing dynamics in deep shale gas reservoir fracturing site and adjust the drainage and production plan in time. 展开更多

Triaxial tests,a staple in rock engineering, are labor-intensive,sample-demanding,and costly, making their optimization highly advantageous. These tests are essential for characterizing rock strength, and by adopting a failure criterion, they allow for the derivation of criterion parameters through regression, facilitating their integration into modeling programs. In this study,we introduce the application of an underutilized statistical technique—orthogonal regression—well-suited for analyzing triaxial test data.Additionally,we present an innovation in this technique by minimizing the Euclidean distance while incorporating orthogonality between vectors as a constraint, for the case of orthogonal linear regression. Also,we consider the Modified Least Squares method. We exemplify this approach by developing the necessary equations to apply the Mohr-Coulomb,Murrell,Hoek-Brown,andÚcar criteria, and implement these equations in both spreadsheet calculations and R scripts. Finally,we demonstrate the technique's application using five datasets of varied lithologies from specialized literature, showcasing its versatility and effectiveness. 展开更多

In this study, based on the rockburst disaster mechanism of excess energy △E>0,true triaxial transient unloading strainburst(including instantaneous strainburst and delayed strainburst)experiments were performed on granite specimens at different maximum principal stress levels. The experimental results were then analyzed, with the strainburst characteristics and acoustic emission(AE)responses of the granite specimens being examined. The excess energy △E was derived through a comparison with the results of conventional biaxial compression tests. The following beneficial conclusions were drawn. The mechanical strength of delayed strainburst specimens initially increases and then decreases with the rise of the unloading stress level. In contrast, the mechanical strength of instantaneous strainburst specimens is higher than that of delayed ones, increasing with the unloading stress level. In terms of fragment ejection velocity and scale, the rockburst intensity of a specimen is positively correlated with its mechanical strength.A pronounced linear relationship exists between the excess energy △E and the fragment ejection velocity(as well as weight),indicating that △E is intimately linked to the kinetic energy of rockbursts.Rockbursts lead to the formation of burst pits and typical V-shaped damage zones near the free face of the specimens, within which tensile cracks dominate.Additionally, the distribution of AE AFRA values indicates that the proportion of tensile cracks increases with the rise of unloading stress level, suggesting that transient unloading under high stress levels significantly promotes tensile fracture. It is anticipated that this study will provide further elucidation on the mechanism of rockburst kinetic energy generation, thereby establishing a foundation for the design of rockburst support measures in engineering applications. 展开更多

Rock-like specimens containing a joint with different inclination angles and roughness were prepared using 3D printing technology. Then, true triaxial compression loading experiments were conducted on those jointed specimens. The increase in roughness leads to an increase in the axial strength and peak strain. With the increasing inclination angle, the axial strength initially decreases from 30°to 60°and then increases from 60°to 90°.While the peak strain first rises from 30°to 45°and then declines from 45°to 90°.The variation in failure mode results from differences in lateral stress on the joints under different strike directions.Specimens with joint strike parallel to the intermediate principal stress predominantly showed matrix or matrix-joint mixed shear failure, whereas those parallel to the minimum principal stress exhibited matrix shear failure. The analysis results of acoustic emission signals indicate the crack number and shear crack percentage increase with the increasing roughness and first decrease(30°to 60°),then increase(60°to 90°)with the increasing inclination angle. The research results can provide some guidance for the design and support of underground engineering with jointed surrounding rock. 展开更多
