The neutron-induced total cross-section of ^(209)Bi is crucial for the physical design and safety assessment of lead-based fast reactors, and the quality of experimental data should be improved for evaluation and application.A recent experiment was conducted on the back-streaming white neutron beamline(Back-n) at the China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS) using the neutron total cross-section spectrometer(NTOX). The neutron energy was determined using a fast multi-cell fission chamber and the time-of-flight technique. Two high-purity bismuth samples,6 mm and 20 mm in thickness, were chosen for neutron transmission measurements and comparisons. The neutron total cross-sections of ^(209)Bi, ranging from 0.3 e V to 20 Me V, were derived considering neutron flight time determination, flight path calibration, and background subtraction. A comparison of the experimental results with the data in the ENDF/B-VⅢ.0 library showed fair agreement, and the point-wise cross-sections were found to be consistent with existing experimental data. Special attention was given to the determination of resonance parameters, which were analyzed using the R-matrix code SAMMY and Bayesian method in the 0.5 ke V to 20 ke V energy range. The extracted resonance parameters were compared to previously reported results and evaluated data. This study is recognized as the first one where the neutron total cross-section of bismuth across such a broad energy spectrum is measured in a single measurement or experiment, and it provides valuable data for the assessment of related reaction information for evaluated libraries and the advancement of lead-bismuth-based nuclear systems. 展开更多

The neutron total cross-section of ^(nat)Cr plays a crucial role in new nuclear engineering design and fundamental science.A new measurement of the neutron-induced total cross-sections of ^(nat)Cr was performed using the transmission method on the back-streaming white neutron beamline(Back-n)at the China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS).The neutron energy was determined using the time-of-flight technique. The neutron total cross-sections of ^(nat)Cr were obtained across a broad energy range(0.3 eV−20 MeV)in one experiment for the first time. The resulting effective total cross-sections were compared with the existing experimental data in different energy ranges, which revealed good agreement with the evaluated libraries.Theoretical calculation of the total cross-section in the energy range of 1.5 to 20 MeV was then conducted using TALYS-1.96 and compared with the present results. The measurement provides a high-quality total cross-section of ^(nat)Cr,including detailed uncertainty data across a wide energy range, offering a valuable reference for nuclear data re-evaluation and nuclear engineering design. 展开更多

Casting experiments and macro-micro numerical simulations were conducted to examine the microstructure characteristics of K439B nickel-based superalloy casting with varying cross-sections during the gravity investment casting process.Firstly, microstructure analysis was conducted on the casting using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD).Subsequently, calculation of the phase diagram and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)tests were conducted to determine the macro-micro simulation parameters of the K439B alloy, and the cellular automaton finite element(CAFE)method was employed to develop macro-micro modeling of K439B nickel-based superalloy casting with varying cross-sections.The experimental results revealed that the ratio of the average grain area increased from the edge to the center of the sections as the ratio of the cross-sectional area increased. The simulation results indicated that the average grain area increased from 0.885 to 0.956 mm^(2)as the ratio of the cross-sections increased from 6꞉1 to 12꞉1.The experiment and simulation results showed that the grain size became more heterogeneous and the grain shape became more irregular with an increase in the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the casting.CAFE modeling was an effective method to simulate the microstructure evolution of the K439B alloy and ensure the accuracy of the simulation. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Aseptic loosening remains the leading cause of revision in primary total hip arthroplasty(pTHA).However, the literature demonstrates significant variability regarding the relative contributions of different factors.AIM To investigate the key determinants of aseptic loosening,we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis.METHODS A comprehensive search of PubMed,Web of Science,EMBASE,and the Cochrane Library was conducted, encompassing studies from database inception to January 1,2025.Meta-analyses were performed to evaluate factors associated with aseptic loosening following pTHA.Inclusion and exclusion criteria were systematically applied at each stage to ensure methodological transparency and reproducibility.Study quality was assessed using standardized categories.Pooled odds ratio(OR)with corresponding 95%confidence interval were calculated with random-or fixed-effects models to generate reliability estimates, and study heterogeneity was visualized using forest plots.Ten factors, categorized into patient-,surgeon-,and device-related domains, were reviewed and meta-analyzed.Funnel plot analysis demonstrated a relatively symmetrical distribution, suggesting minimal publication bias.RESULTS A meta-analysis of 20 studies(520789 participants)found a pooled prevalence of 1.96%.Significant risk factors for aseptic loosening after pTHA included elevated body mass index(OR=1.116,P<0.001),higher Charlson comorbidity index(OR=1.378,P<0.001),prosthesis-related factors(OR=1.497,P<0.001),and adverse lifestyles(OR=2.198,P=0.037).Protective factors were non-white race(OR=0.445,P<0.001)and favorable genetics(OR=0.723,P<0.001).Male sex increased risk(OR=1.232,P=0.016),while age and anatomy were not significant.Surgical expertise showed a slight protective effect(OR=1.048,P<0.001).A comprehensive understanding of the modifiable and non-modifiable factors contributing to aseptic loosening after pTHA requires consideration of patient-related factors, surgical expertise, and prosthesis characteristics.CONCLUSION The identification of these factors is critical for risk mitigation.High-risk patients should receive targeted counseling regarding individualized profiles.Further studies are warranted to establish clearer causal relationships and identify additional contributing factors. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The optimal surgical approach for patients with primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis(GHOA)and an intact rotator cuff remains debated. While anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty(TSA)has traditionally been favoured, reverse TSA(RTSA)is increasingly utilized.AIM To systematically compare the outcomes of RTSA and TSA in this specific patient population.METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines.Retrospective comparative studies evaluating RTSA and TSA in patients with GHOA and intact rotator cuff were included.Key outcomes assessed included complication and reoperation rates,patient-reported outcome measures(PROMs),and range of motion.Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions tool.RESULTS Twelve studies encompassing 1608 patients(580 RTSA,1028 TSA)met inclusion criteria.RTSA was associated with a lower reoperation rate compared to TSA[odds ratio=0.37;95%confidence interval(CI):0.14-0.94;P value=0.04],while no significant difference in overall complication rates was observed(odds ratio=0.47;95%CI:0.19-1.16;P value=0.10).RTSA patients showed superior outcomes in University of California Los Angeles,Simple Shoulder Test, and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores;however, the differences did not exceed the minimal clinically important difference.TSA patients had significantly better external rotation(mean difference=-9.0°;95%CI:-13.21 to-5.02;P value<0.0001).No significant differences were found in other range of motion measures or satisfaction scores. The overall methodological quality of included studies was moderate to serious.CONCLUSION In patients with GHOA and an intact rotator cuff,RTSA may offer comparable or improved outcomes to TSA with lower reoperation rates and similar complication profiles.Functional outcomes favour RTSA in certain patientreported outcome measures, while TSA retains an advantage in external rotation.Surgical decision-making should remain individualized based on patient characteristics and functional demands. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Medial dished(MD)liner designs for cruciate-retaining(CR)total knee arthroplasty(TKA)are a relatively novel development.MD tibial inserts have a more constraining medial side, which allows for more similar kinematics and function to a native knee.AIM To evaluate the clinical results and patient-reported outcomes after CR TKA procedures utilizing a kinematically designed medial dish system.METHODS A multicenter, retrospective cohort review of 139 primary elective TKAs utilizing a kinematically designed CR Knee System(JOURNEY™II CR MD;Smith and Nephew,Memphis,TN,United States)at three different institutions with a minimum of two years of follow-up.Demographic information, clinical outcomes, and patient-reported outcome measures were collected and analyzed.RESULTS With up to 3.7 years from surgery, overall implant survivorship was 98.6%.There were significant postoperative increases in the average Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement scores(17.4 at 6 months,26.1 points at two years or more,P<0.001).CONCLUSION The combination of high implant survivorship and substantial improvements in patient-reported outcome measures suggests that the medial dish tibial insert represents a safe and effective option within TKA.Additional investigation is necessary to evaluate the long-term survivorship of this design. 展开更多

A bimorph piezoelectric beam with periodically variable cross-sections is used for the vibration energy harvesting. The effects of two geometrical parameters on the first band gap of this periodic beam are investigated by the generalized differential quadrature rule (GDQR) method. The GDQR method is also used to calculate the forced vibration response of the beam and voltage of each piezoelectric layer when the beam is subject to a sinusoidal base excitation. Results obtained from the analytical method are compared with those obtained from the finite element simulation with ANSYS, and good agreement is found. The voltage output of this periodic beam over its first band gap is calculated and compared with the voltage output of the uniform piezoelectric beam. It is concluded that this periodic beam has three advantages over the uniform piezoelectric beam, i.e., generating more voltage outputs over a wide frequency range, absorbing vibration, and being less weight. 展开更多

Tunnel deformation monitoring is a crucial task to evaluate tunnel stability during the metro operation period.Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS)can collect high density and high accuracy point cloud data in a few minutes as an innovation technique, which provides promising applications in tunnel deformation monitoring. Here,an efficient method for extracting tunnel cross-sections and convergence analysis using dense TLS point cloud data is proposed.First, the tunnel orientation is determined using principal component analysis(PCA)in the Euclidean plane. Two control points are introduced to detect and remove the unsuitable points by using point cloud division and then the ground points are removed by defining an elevation value width of 0.5 m.Next,a z-score method is introduced to detect and remove the outlies.Because the tunnel cross-section’s standard shape is round, the circle fitting is implemented using the least-squares method.Afterward, the convergence analysis is made at the angles of 0°,30°and 150°.The proposed approach’s feasibility is tested on a TLS point cloud of a Nanjing subway tunnel acquired using a FARO X330 laser scanner. The results indicate that the proposed methodology achieves an overall accuracy of 1.34 mm,which is also in agreement with the measurements acquired by a total station instrument. The proposed methodology provides new insights and references for the applications of TLS in tunnel deformation monitoring, which can also be extended to other engineering applications. 展开更多

An alternative expression for photoionization cross-section of atoms or molecules and a dielectric influence function (DIF) in a high-density system proposed recently are used to study the photoionization cross-sections of solid silver. It is suggested that a density turning point (DTP) of a photoionized system may be viewed as the critical point where the photoionization properties of atoms in a real system may have a notable change. The results show that the present theoretical photoionization cross-sections are in good agreement with the experimental results of a silver crystal both in structure and in magnitude. 展开更多

The aim of this study was to compare mandibular form (i.e., size and shape) between patients with agenesis of the lower second premolar (P2) and a control group with no agenesis. Three hypotheses were tested: (H1) agenesis causes a change in mandibular morphology because of inadequate alveolar ridge development in the area of the missing tooth (mandibular plasticity); (H2) agenesis is caused by spatial limitations within the mandible (dental plasticity); and (H3) common genetic/ epigenetic factors cause agenesis and affect mandibular form (pleiotropy). A geometric morphometric analysis was applied to cross-sectional images of computed tomography (CT) scans of three matched groups (n= 50 each): (1) regularly erupted P2; (2) agenesis of P2 and the primary second molar in situ; and (3) agenesis of P2 and the primary second molar missing for 〉3 months. Cross-sections of the three areas of interest (first premolar, P2, first molar) were digitized with 23 landmarks and superimposed by a generalized Procrustes analysis. On average, the mandibular cross-sections were narrower and shorter in patients with P2 agenesis compared with that in the control group. Both agenesis groups featured a pronounced submandibular fossa. These differences extended at least one tooth beyond the agenesis-affected region. Taken together with the large interindividual variation that resulted in massively overlapping group distributions, these findings support genetic and/or epigenetic pleiotropy (H3) as the most likely origin of the observed covariation between mandibular form and odontogenesis. Clinically, reduced dimensions and greater variability of mandibular form, as well as a pronounced submandibular fossa, should be expected during the treatment planning of patients with P2 agenesis. 展开更多

Large Eddy Simulation(LES)has been employed for the investigation of supersonic flow characteristics in five ducts with varying cross-sectional geometries. The numerical results reveal that flow channel configurations exert a considerable influence on the mainstream flow and the near-wall flow behavior. In contrast to straight ducts,square-to-circular and rectangular-to-circular ducts exhibit thicker boundary layers and a greater presence of vortex structures.Given the same inlet area,rectangular-to-circular ducts lead to higher flow drag force and total pressure loss than square-to-circular ducts.Characterized by the substantial flow separation and shock waves,the"S-shaped duct shows significant vertically-asymmetric characteristics. 展开更多

Interest has recently emerged in potential applications of(n,2n)reactions of unstable nuclei.Challenges have arisen because of the scarcity of experimental cross-sectional data. This study aims to predict the(n,2n)reaction cross-section of long-lived fission products based on a tensor model. This tensor model is an extension of the collaborative filtering algorithm used for nuclear data.It is based on tensor decomposition and completion to predict(n,2n)reaction cross-sections;the corresponding EXFOR data are applied as training data. The reliability of the proposed tensor model was validated by comparing the calculations with data from EXFOR and different databases.Predictions were made for long-lived fission products such as^(60)Co,^(79)Se,^(93)Zr,^(107)P,^(126)Sn,and^(137)Cs,which provide a predicted energy range to effectively transmute long-lived fission products into shorter-lived or less radioactive isotopes. This method could be a powerful tool for completing(n,2n)reaction cross-sectional data and shows the possibility of selective transmutation of nuclear waste. 展开更多

Objective The relationship between non-high-density lipoprotein(NHDL)cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)ratio(NHHR)and stoke remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the adult NHHR and stroke occurrence in the United States of America(USA).Methods To clarify the relationship between the NHHR and stroke risk, this study used a multivariable logistic regression model and a restricted cubic spline(RCS)model to investigate the association between the NHHR and stroke, and data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES)from 2005 to 2018.Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the robustness of the results. Results This study included 29,928 adult participants,of which 1,165 participants had a history of stroke.Logistic regression analysis of variables demonstrated a positive association between NHHR and stroke(OR 1.24,95%CI:1.03-1.50,P=0.026).Compared with the lowest reference group of NHHR,participants in the second, third, and fourth quartile had a significantly increased risk of stroke after full adjustments(OR:1.35,95%CI:1.08-1.69)(OR:1.83,95%CI:1.42-2.36)(OR:2.04,95%CI:1.50-2.79).In the total population,a nonlinear dose-response relationship was observed between the NHHR and stroke risk(P non-linearity=0.002).This association remained significant in several subgroup analyses.Further investigation of the NHHR may enhance our understanding of stroke prevention and treatment. Conclusion Our findings suggest a positive correlation between the NHHR and an increased prevalence of stroke, potentially serving as a novel predictive factor for stroke.Timely intervention and management of the NHHR may effectively mitigate stroke occurrence.Prospective studies are required to validate this association and further explore the underlying biological mechanisms. 展开更多

Viewing gravitational energy-momentum PGμ as equal by observation, but different in essence from inertial energy-momentum PIμ naturally leads to the gauge theory of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a four-dimensional inner space. To analyse scattering in this theory, the gauge field is coupled to two Dirac fields with different masses. Based on a generalized LSZ reduction formula the S-matrix element for scattering of two Dirac particles in the gravitational limit and the corresponding scattering cross-section are calculated to leading order in perturbation theory. Taking the non-relativistic limit for one of the initial particles in the rest frame of the other the Rutherford-like cross-section of a non-relativistic particle scattering off an infinitely heavy scatterer calculated quantum mechanically in Newtonian gravity is recovered. This provides a non-trivial test of the gauge field theory of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms as a quantum theory of gravity. 展开更多
