The Damiao Fe-Ti-P deposit, located within the Damiao anorthosite complex in northeastern China, features Fe-Ti oxide ores and nelsonites that occur as irregularly inclined stratiform-like bodies, lenses,or veins with sharp contacts against anorthosite and gabbronorite. This deposit is characterized by abundant titanomagnetite that hosts diverse ilmenite exsolution textures, including blocky, lamellar, and cloth-like forms. In this study,we investigate the geochemistry and mineralogy of ilmenite exsolutions in titanomagnetite to understand their formation mechanisms and implications for the ore-forming process.Detailed petrographic observations and electron microprobe analyses reveal that the exsolution textures result from multiple mechanisms:oxy-exsolution due to titanomagnetite oxidation;subsolidus re-equilibration between magnetite and ilmenite involving elemental diffusion of Fe,Ti,Cr,Co,and Ni;and exsolution related to lattice defects caused by rapid cooling.Thermodynamic modeling using Gibbs free energy calculations, and the QUILF program indicates that blocky, lamellar, and cloth-textured ilmenite exsolutions formed at temperatures above and below the solid-solution solvus under decreasing oxygen fugacity.Additionally, our results indicate that the exsolution of zircon and pleonaste at ilmenite grain boundaries is attributed to the saturation and precipitation of elements like Zr and Al,due to the oxidation of titanomagnetite, rather than interactions between ilmenite and adjacent clinopyroxene.Reconstruction of the cooling history suggests that the oxygen fugacity of oxide-apatite gabbronorites was significantly higher than that of Fe-Ti-P ores. This confirms that increasing oxygen fugacity during magma evolution promoted immiscibility, leading to the formation of nelsonitic melts and ultimately the development of Fe-Ti-P ores. 展开更多

The effect of(CaO+SiO_(2))mass ratio on high-Ti vanadium titanomagnetite sintering was systematically studied at the fixed basicity(CaO/SiO_(2))of 2.0.The results show that sinter matrix strength is improved with(CaO+SiO_(2))mass ratio while the total iron content is reduced.Thermodynamic analysis indicates that the increase in(CaO+SiO_(2))mass ratio from 15.0 to 22.5 wt.%contributes to the formation of liquid phase, especially silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum(SFCA).In addition, the formation of perovskite is inhibited and liquid phase fluidity is improved. The porosity of sinter matrix is reduced by 34.5%and SFCA amount is increased by 47.2%when(CaO+SiO_(2))mass ratio is increased from 15.0 to 18.0 wt.%.With the further increase in(CaO+SiO_(2))mass ratio, the structure of sinter matrix is too dense and the improved extent of SFCA amount is increasingly low.The appropriate(CaO+SiO_(2))mass ratio should be 18.0 wt.%overall.Under this condition, sinter matrix strength is greatly improved by over 13.5%compared with the base case and the total iron content can be maintained at about 49 wt.%. 展开更多

In order to clarify the oxidation mechanisms and make better use of the low-grade vanadiferous titanomagnetite concentrate with high titanium(LVTC),the oxidation behavior of LVTC was investigated. The results showed that oxidation degree was achieved within 90 min when temperature was not lower than 700°C,and the main phases of the oxidized LVTC consisted of Fe9TiO15,Fe2O3,CaSiTiO5 and a small amount of Fe2.75Ti0.25O4.Increasing temperature is favorable to the formation of Fe2TiO5.The surface of LVTC gradually becomes rough, with fine particles of needle-like and granular shape appearing on the surface, which finally turn from laminar to creamy, spread out,and are interspersed with many tiny holes. The phase oxidation paths in LVTC were as follows:(1)Fe2.75Ti0.25O4→Fe9TiO15+Fe2O3;(2)Fe2.75Ti0.25O4→Fe2O3+FeTiO3→Fe2TiO5;(3)FeTiO3→Fe2O3+Fe2Ti3O9→Fe2TiO5.LVTC is predominantly mesoporous whether oxidized or not, with the pores mainly distributed in the range of 2–40 nm,and the specific surface area of LVTC decreases significantly with increasing temperature. 展开更多

The direct reduction process is an important development direction of low-carbon ironmaking and efficient comprehensive utilization of poly-metallic iron ore, such as titanomagnetite. However, the defluidization of reduced iron particles with a high metallization degree at a high temperature will seriously affect the operation of fluidized bed reduction.Coupling the pre-oxidation enhancing reduction and the particle surface modification of titanomagnetite, the behavior and mechanism of pre-oxidation improvement on fluidization in the fluidized bed reduction of titanomagnetite are systematically studied in this paper.Pre-oxidation treatment of titanomagnetite can significantly lower the critical stable reduction fluidization gas velocity to 0.17 m/s,which is reduced by 56%compared to that of titanomagnetite reduction without pre-oxidation,while achieving a metallization degree of>90%,Corresponding to the different reduction fluidization behaviors, three pre-oxidation operation regions have been divided, taking oxidation degrees of 26%and 86%as the boundaries.Focusing on the particle surface morphology evolution in the pre-oxidation-reduction process, the relationship between the surface morphology of pre-oxidized ore and the reduced iron with fluidization properties is built. The improving method of pre-oxidation on the reduction fluidization provides a novel approach to prevent defluidization by particle surface modification, especially for the fluidized bed reduction of poly-metallic iron ore. 展开更多

The reduction behaviors of FeO·V2O3 and FeO·Cr2O3 during coal-based direct reduction have a decisive impact on the efficient utilization of high-chromium vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrates. The effects of molar ratio of C to Fe n(C)/n(Fe) and temperature on the behaviors of vanadium and chromium during direct reduction and magnetic separation were investigated. The reduced samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning election microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry(EDS) techniques. Experimental results indicate that the recoveries of vanadium and chromium rapidly increase from 10.0% and 9.6% to 45.3% and 74.3%, respectively, as the n(C)/n(Fe) increases from 0.8 to 1.4. At n(C)/n(Fe) of 0.8, the recoveries of vanadium and chromium are always lower than 10.0% in the whole temperature range of 1100-1250 °C. However, at n(C)/n(Fe) of 1.2, the recoveries of vanadium and chromium considerably increase from 17.8% and 33.8% to 42.4% and 76.0%, respectively, as the temperature increases from 1100 °C to 1250 °C. At n(C)/n(Fe) lower than 0.8, most of the FeO·V2O3 and FeO·Cr2O3 are not reduced to carbides because of the lack of carbonaceous reductants, and the temperature has little effect on the reduction behaviors of FeO·V2O3 and FeO·Cr2O3, resulting in very low recoveries of vanadium and chromium during magnetic separation. However, at higher n(C)/n(Fe), the reduction rates of FeO·V2O3 and FeO·Cr2O3 increase significatly because of the excess amount of carbonaceous reductants. Moreover, higher temperatures largely induce the reduction of FeO·V2O3 and FeO·Cr2O3 to carbides. The newly formed carbides are then dissolved in the γ(FCC) phase, and recovered accompanied with the metallic iron during magnetic separation. 展开更多

The oxidation induration and reduction swelling behavior of chromium-bearing vanadium titanomagnetite pellets(CVTP)with Cr2O3 addition were studied, and the reduction swelling index(RSI)and compressive strength(CS)of the reduced CVTP with simulated coke oven gas(COG)injection were investigated. The results showed that the CS of the CVTP decreases and the porosity of the CVTP increases with increasing amount of Cr2O3 added. The Cr2O3 mainly exists in the form of(Cr,Fe)2O3 solid solution in the CVTP and as Fe-Cr in the reduced CVTP.The CS of the reduced CVTP increases and the RSI of the reduced CVTP decreases with increasing amount of Cr2O3 added. The limited aggregation and diffusion of metallic iron contribute to the formation of dense lamellar crystals, which leads to the slight decrease for reduction swelling behavior of reduced CVTP.This work provides a theoretical and technical basis for the utilization of CVTP and other Cr-bearing ores such as chromite with COG recycling technology. 展开更多

Iron and titanium were recovered from beach titanomagnetite(TTM) concentrate by embedding direct reduction and magnetic separation. The reduction products and the effects of the reductant type and reduction temperature on the reduction behavior were investigated. The results showed that the reduction of TTM concentrate was strongly related to the gasification reactivity of the reductant. Bitumite presented a better product index than wheat-straw biochar and coke, mainly because the gasification reactivity of bitumite was better than that of the other reductants. In addition, high temperatures were not beneficial to embedding direct reduction because of the emergence of a molten phase and iron-joined crystals, which in turn reduced the diffusion rate of the reducing gas and impeded the reduction reaction in the central area of the roasted briquette. The use of bitumite as the reductant at a C/Fe molar ratio of 1.4 and a reduction temperature of 1200°C for 120 min resulted in direct-reduction iron powder assaying 90.28 wt% TFe and 0.91 wt% TiO_2 with an iron recovery of 91.83% and titanium concentrate assaying 46.01 wt% TiO_2 with a TiO_2 recovery of 91.19%. Titanium existed mainly in the form of anosovite and ilmenite in the titanium concentrate. 展开更多

The effects of CaO content,MgO content and smelting temperature on the vanadium behavior during the smelting of vanadium titanomagnetite metallized pellets were investigated. The thermodynamics of reduction and distribution of vanadium was analyzed and the high-temperature smelting experiments were carried out.The thermodynamic calculations show that the distribution ratio of vanadium between the slag and the hot metal decreases with the increments of CaO and MgO content in the slag as well as the increase of the smelting temperature. The smelting experiments demonstrate that the vanadium content in iron and the recovery rate of vanadium in pig iron increase as the CaO content,MgO content and smelting temperature increase, whereas the vanadium distribution ratio between the slag and iron tends to decrease. Moreover, the recovery rate of vanadium in pig iron has a rising trend with increasing the optical basicity of the slag. The addition of MgO in the slag to increase the slag optical basicity can not only improve the vanadium reduction but also promote the formation of magnesium-containing anosovite, which is beneficial to following titanium extraction. 展开更多

The co-reduction roasting and grinding-magnetic separation of seaside titanomagnetite and blast furnace dust was investigated with and without fluorite addition at a reduction roasting temperature of 1250°C for 60 min, a grinding fineness of-43 μm accounting for 69.02 wt% of the total, and a low-intensity magnetic field strength of 151 kA/m. The mineral composition, microstructure, and state of the roasted products were analyzed, and the concentrations of CO and CO_2 were analyzed in the co-reduction roasting. Better results were achieved with a small fluorite dosage(≤4 wt%) in the process of co-reduction. In addition, F^- was found to reduce the melting point and viscosity of the slag phase because of the high content of aluminate and silicate minerals in the blast furnace dust. The low moisture content of the blast furnace dust and calcic minerals inhibited the hydrolysis of CaF_2 and the loss of F^-. Compared with the blast furnace dust from Chengdeng, the blast furnace dusts from Jiugang and Jinxin inhibited the diffusion of F-when used as reducing agents, leading to weaker effects of fluorite. 展开更多

Effects of calcium compounds on the carbothermic reduction of vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate(VTC) were investigated. It was found that calcium compounds had great effects on the metallization rate of the reduction product, the order of the metallization rate of reduction product being CaCO3 > no additive > CaSO4 > CaCl2, which indicated that the addition of CaCO3 was more conducive to promoting the reduction of iron than other calcium compounds. Gas analysis showed that there were mainly two processes in the carbothermic reduction of VTC, a solid–solid and a solid–gas reaction. The concentrations of CO and CO2 were highest when CaCO3 was added, while that in a roasting system decreased the most when CaCl2 was added. X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis showed that calcium compounds could change the reduction process of ilmenite in VTC. The phase compositions of the reduction products were changed from metallic iron(Fe) and anosovite(FeTi2O5) to metallic iron(Fe) and perovekite(CaTiO3) when calcium compounds were added. Additionally, CaSO4 and CaCl2 could significantly promote the growth of metallic iron particles, though the existence of Fe-bearing Mg2TiO4 in reduction products was not conducive to the reduction of iron. The formation of FeS would further hinder the reduction of iron after adding CaSO4. 展开更多

Smelting separations of Hongge vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite metallized pellets(HVTMP)prepared by gas-based direct reduction were investigated, and the effects of smelting parameters on the slag/metal separation behaviors were analyzed.Relevant mechanisms were elucidated using X-ray diffraction analysis,FACTSAGE 7.0 calculations, and scanning electron microscopy observations. The results show that, when the smelting temperature, time, and C/O ratio are increased, the recoveries of V and Cr of HVTMP in pig iron are improved, the recovery of Fe initially increases and subsequently decreases, and the recovery of Ti O_2 in slag decreases. When the smelting Ca O/Si O_2 ratio is increased, the recoveries of Fe,V,and Cr in pig iron increase and the recovery of Ti O_2 in slag initially increases and subsequently decreases. The appropriate smelting separation parameters for HVTMP are as follows:smelting temperature of 1873 K;smelting time of 30–50 min;C/O ratio of 1.25;and Ca O/Si O_2 ratio of 0.50.With these optimized parameters(smelting time:30 min),the recoveries of Fe,V,Cr,and Ti O_2 are 99.5%,91.24%,92.41%,and 94.86%,respectively. 展开更多

The carbothermic reduction of vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate(VTC)with the assistance of Na_(2)CO_(3)was conducted in an argon atmosphere between 1073 and 1473 K.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the phase transformations during the reaction.By investigating the reaction between VTC and Na_(2)CO_(3),it was concluded that molten Na_(2)CO_(3)broke the structure of titanomagnetite by combining with the acidic oxides(Fe_(2)O_(3),TiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3),and SiO_(2))to form a Na-rich melt and release FeO and MgO.Therefore,Na_(2)CO_(3)accelerated the reduction rate.In addition, adding Na_(2)CO_(3)also benefited the agglomeration of iron particles and the slag–metal separation by decreasing the viscosity of the slag.Thus,Na_(2)CO_(3)assisted carbothermic reduction is a promising method for treating VTC at low temperatures. 展开更多

A process of NaOH molten salt roasting-water leaching to treat titanium-vanadium slag obtained by direct reduction of titanomagnetite concentrates was investigated.X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry(TG-DSC) techniques were used to characterize the samples. The results show that anosovite(Mg_(x)Ti_(3-x)O_(5))and clinopyroxene [Ca(Ti,MgAl)(SiAl)_(2)O_(6)] are the major phases of titanium-vanadium slag. In the NaOH molten salt roasting process, titanium is converted to intermediate product Na_(2)TiO_(3) and vanadium is converted to water-soluble vanadate. The response surface methodology(RSM) was used to optimize the roasting process conditions. NaOH to slag mass ratio(N/S) and roasting temperature are the main influential factors. Under the optimal roasting conditions,i.e., roasting temperature of 550℃, N/S of 1.20, and roasting time of 80 min, the conversions of titanium and vanadium are 96.5 % and 93.0 %, respectively. In the water leaching process, Na_(2)TiO_(3) is converted to amorphous structure of H_(2)TiO_(3) since Na^(+)is exchanged with H^(+). Up to 93.0 % vanadium is leached out under the optimal leaching conditions. Titanium and vanadium in the titanium-vanadium slag can be separated and then recovered. 展开更多

Hongge vanadium titanomagnetite(HVTM)pellets were reduced by H2-CO gas mixture for simulating the reduction processes of Midrex and HYL-III shaft furnaces. The influences of reduction temperature, ratio ofφ(H2)toφ(CO),and pellet size on the reduction of HVTM pellets were evaluated in detail and the reduction reaction kinetics was investigated. The results show that both the reduction degree and reduction rate can be improved with increasing the reduction temperature and the H2 content as well as decreasing the pellet size. The rational reduction parameters are reduction temperature of 1050℃,ratio ofφ(H2)toφ(CO)of 2.5,and pellet diameter in the range of 8-11 mm.Under these conditions(pellet diameter of 11mm),final reduction degree of 95.51% is achieved. The X-ray diffraction(XRD)pattern shows that the main phases of final reduced pellets under these conditions(pellet diameter of 11 mm)are reduced iron and rutile. The peak intensity of reduced iron increases obviously with the increase in the reduction temperature.Besides, relatively high reduction temperature promotes the migration and coarsening of metallic iron particles and improves the distribution of vanadium and chromium in the reduced iron, which is conducive to subsequent melting separation. At the early stage, the reduction process is controlled by interfacial chemical reaction and the apparent activation energy is 60.78kJ/mol.The reduction process is controlled by both interfacial chemical reaction and internal diffusion at the final stage, and the apparent activation energy is 30.54kJ/mol. 展开更多

Beach titanomagnetite(TTM)provides a cheap alternative source of Fe and Ti,but this ore is difficult to process to make suitable concentrates for the blast furnace.Recently studies showed that it is feasible to separate Fe and Ti by coal-based direct reduction. In this study, beach TTM was selected as the research object, the effects of reducing agents on reducing atmosphere in coal-based direct reduction of beach TTM were analyzed, and the role of volatiles was also studied. The results showed that when bitumite and coke were used as reducing agents of TTM,the CO produced from volatiles was involved in the reduction reaction, and the generated CO_(2) provided the raw material for the reaction of TTM.The reduction effect of bitumite was better than that of coke. The reason is that bitumite+TTM had a higher gas generation rate and produced a higher CO partial pressure, while coke+TTM had a lower gas generation rate and produced a lower CO partial pressure. When graphite was used as a reducing agent, there was a solid-solid reaction in the early stage in the reaction. With the continuous accumulation of CO_(2),the Boudouad reaction started and accelerated.Graphite+TTM also produced a higher CO partial pressure. 展开更多

Many problems appear in the sintering process of vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite, such as high energy consumption and low productivity; simer quality is also very poor for its low tumble strength and high reduction deg- radation. Sinter productivity and quality are dominated by bed permeability and mineralogy structure, which are highly influenced by the thermal state of sintering bed, so the sintering process of titanomagnetite is researched by bed dissection in this work. Temperature evolution curves of sinter materials were measured, and the results show that melting duration, peak temperature duration and sintering temperature of different layers differ greatly from each other; flame front speed and vertical sintering speed of bed lower region are much smaller than those of bed up- per region. Simultaneously, sinter samples were collected from different layers, and their mineralogy characteristics are analyzed; sinters from bed lower region have poor mineralogy structure, and the amounts of perovskite and dieM- cium silicate increase intensively, which are bad for sinter strength and reduction degradation property. Measures are proposed to improve the quality and productivity of titanomagnetite sinter. 展开更多

Titanium mineral was prepared from vanadium titanomagnetite concentrates by hydrogen reduction and acid leaching. The leaching behaviors of elements like Fe,V,Mn,Al,Mg,Ca,and Si were highly related to the reduction degree. The phase compositions of the reduced materials and the leached residues were analyzed by XRD to identify the effect of reduction degree on the leaching mechanisms. The results showed that the concentrates were reduced to iron metal and titanomagnetite at 800-1000°C for 0.5 h,and the above elements of Fe and impurities were easily leached.Deeper reduction led to the formation of ilmenite and Mg-Al spinel, which hindered leaching.Mg-bearing anosovite appeared in the further reduced materials, and the leaching rates of impurities became much lower. An upgraded titanium mineral with a normalized TiO_(2) grade of 70.3%was achieved by H_(2) reduction at 850°C for 0.5 h and acid leaching, which is a satisfactory Ti resource for the preparation of titanium oxide by sulfate process. 展开更多

This study involved the investigation of the effects of the continuous cooling process conditions on the crystallization and liberation characteristics of anosovite in Ti-bearing titanomagnetite smelting slag. The samples were heated until melting and then the temperature was held at 1650℃ for nearly 0.5 h;subsequently, the samples were cooled at different cooling rates to different temperatures and water-quenched after being held for different times at these temperatures. Last, the obtained crystallized samples were used to analyze the crystallization and liberation characteristics. It was found that, during the continuous cooling process, anosovite particles were found to initially precipitate in the slag at a relatively high crystallization temperature, showing the characteristics of euhedral crystal. The precipitation and growth of anosovite grain is strong and the morphology of anosovite was basically not affected by the continuous cooling conditions. From the morphology perspective, the formed anosovite is an excellent Ti-rich phase to be selective separated. The formation of spinel and diopside is negative for the liberation and selective separation of the anosovite phase. The crystallization diagrams of TiO2-MgO-CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-FeO slag undergoing different continuous cooling processes were constructed to help to determine the optimal continuous cooling–quenching condition for selective separation of anosovite. Moreover, the addition of B2O3 can enlarge the range of the optimal continuous cooling–quenching conditions for selective separation of anosovite. 展开更多

The formation of calcium titanate in the carbothermic reduction of vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate(VTC)by adding CaCO3 was investigated.Thermodynamic analysis was employed to show the feasibility of calcium titanate formation by the reaction of ilmenite and Ca CO3 in a reductive atmosphere, where ilmenite is more easily reduced by CO or carbon in the presence of CaCO3.The effects of CaCO3 dosage and reduction temperature on the phase transformation and metallization degree were also investigated in an actual roasting test.Appropriate increase of CaCO3 dosages and reduction temperatures were found to be conducive to the formation of calcium titanate, and the optimum conditions were a CaCO3 dosage of 18 wt%and a reduction temperature of 1400°C.Additionally,scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectrometry(SEM–EDS)analysis shows that calcium titanate produced via the carbothermic reduction of VTC by CaCO3 addition was of higher purity with particle size approximately 50μm.Hence,the separation of calcium titanate and metallic iron will be the focus in the future study. 展开更多
