Workpiece rotational grinding is widely used in the ultra-precision machining of hard and brittle semiconductor materials, including single-crystal silicon, silicon carbide, and gallium arsenide.Surface roughness and subsurface damage depth(SDD)are crucial indicators for evaluating the surface quality of these materials after grinding.Existing prediction models lack general applicability and do not accurately account for the complex material behavior under grinding conditions. This paper introduces novel models for predicting both surface roughness and SDD in hard and brittle semiconductor materials. The surface roughness model uniquely incorporates the material’s elastic recovery properties, revealing the significant impact of these properties on prediction accuracy. The SDD model is distinguished by its analysis of the interactions between abrasive grits and the workpiece,as well as the mechanisms governing stress-induced damage evolution. The surface roughness model and SDD model both establish a stable relationship with the grit depth of cut(GDC).Additionally,we have developed an analytical relationship between the GDC and grinding process parameters. This,in turn, enables the establishment of an analytical framework for predicting surface roughness and SDD based on grinding process parameters, which cannot be achieved by previous models. The models were validated through systematic experiments on three different semiconductor materials, demonstrating excellent agreement with experimental data, with prediction errors of 6.3%for surface roughness and6.9%for SDD.Additionally, this study identifies variations in elastic recovery and material plasticity as critical factors influencing surface roughness and SDD across different materials. These findings significantly advance the accuracy of predictive models and broaden their applicability for grinding hard and brittle semiconductor materials. 展开更多

Background The mulch-free subsurface drip irrigation system demonstrated water-saving potential as an alternative to traditional mulch-based drip irrigation while also eliminating residual film pollution at source. However, delayed sowing is unavoidable in mulch-free cultivation in ecological regions with a short frost-free period.Intercropping with cumin, which has a shorter growth period, served as an effective strategy to improve land use efficiency during the early growth stages of cotton. Therefore,a two-year field experiment was conducted to study the effects of intercropping cumin at the seeding rate of 2.5(ID1),3.85(ID2),and 5.2(ID3)kg・hm−2 on cotton growth, interspecies competition, fiber quality, and water use efficiency(WUE),as well as system economic benefits under subsurface drip irrigation.Monocropping cotton was used as the control(CK)treatment. Results At the initial flowering(IF)stage(the end of the co-growth period of cotton and cumin),cotton plant height in ID2 and ID3 treatments decreased by 5.93%–16.53%and 10.87%–31.11%,respectively,cotton stem diameter by 11.41%–14.25%and 3.37%–26.49%,respectively,and vegetative biomass by 14.46%–30.65%and 22.59%–49.91%,respectively,compared with CK treatment. With the increase in cumin density, the crop growth rate(CGR)and compensation effect in cotton tended to significantly decrease at the IF stage regardless of organs considered. For the non-co-growth period(after harvesting cumin),cotton reproductive organ biomass in ID2 and ID3 treatments increased by 4.09%‒14.61%at the boll opening stage, crop growth rate in reproductive organs by 20.74%and 74.26%from peak boll to boll opening stages compared with CK treatment, due to an enhancement of 19.09%and 49.30%in the compensation effect.Compared with ID1,the aggressivity treated by ID2 and ID3 decreased by 12.82%–46.34%and 17.95%–31.71%,respectively.However,owing to a greater number of green bolls in the upper canopy at the harvest stages in the ID3 treatment, the system production value(closely related to yield)treated by ID2 was 11.69%–16.89%,6.56%–20.02%,and 16.48%–59.83%greater than that of the ID1,ID3,and CK treatments, respectively. This also led to the highest WUE and net profit under the ID2 treatment. Conclusion Intercropping cumin with medium density improved the cotton biomass accumulation characteristics and increased resources such as land and water utilization efficiency and economic benefits through a stronger compensation effect after harvesting cumin under subsurface drip irrigation without mulch. This study not only provides alternatives to residual film pollution in arid cotton fields but also establishes a sustainable agro-ecological-economic planting paradigm by reducing plastic use and enhancing water and fertilizer use efficiency, holding significant implications for advancing resource-efficient agricultural systems. 展开更多

As a frequently-observed phenomenon in the northern South China Sea(nSCS),subsurface chlorophyll maximum(SCM)evolution from summer to winter remains unclear, neither the associated hydrographic control. In this study,on the basis of in-situ data of fall-season cruises in 2004–2006,we characterized the depth, thickness and intensity of the SCM in the nSCS using a general Gaussian-function fitting approach, and investigated a linkage to the corresponding ocean vertical buoyance properties. Our results show that the SCM becomes deeper, thicker and less intense offshore-wards in the nSCS during fall seasons. In parallel,a correlation between the SCM variation and mixed layer depth exists in the nSCS,and it becomes pronounced in the shelf region compared to the slope and basin areas in autumn.Physically, once warmer surface ocean and thus stronger thermo-determined stratification, the SCM layer goes deeper and becomes thicker and less intense in the nSCS,especially in the shelf area of the nSCS.Moreover, the impact of water temperatures at deeper layers on the vertical stratification exerts more consequent roles on the spatial variability of SCM,compared to surface temperatures in the nSCS.Specifically, the isotherm line of 22℃ acts as crucial indicator for variations of the SCM in the nSCS during autumns. 展开更多

In the gas-coal integrated mining field, the conventional design method of pipeline coal pillars leads to a large amount of coal pillars being unrecovered and overlooks the pipeline's safety requirements.Considering the coal pillar recovery rate and pipeline's safety requirements, two new shaped coal pillar design approaches for subsurface pipelines were developed.Firstly, the deformation limitations for measuring pipeline safety are categorized into two:no deformation is permitted, and deformation is acceptable within elastic limits.Subsequently, integrating the key stratum theory(KST)and cave angle,a fishbone-shaped coal pillar design approach that does not permit pipeline deformation is established.Meanwhile, combined with the ground subsidence and the pipeline's elastic deformation limit,a grille-shaped coal pillar design approach that accepts deformation pipelines within elastic limits is established. Those two new approaches clarify parameters including mined width, coal pillar width and mined length. Finally, the case study shows that the designed mined width, coal pillar width and mined length of the fishbone-shaped coal pillar are 90,80,and 130 m,while those of the grille-shaped are 320,370,and640 m.Compared with the conventional method, the fishbone-shaped and grille-shaped coal pillar design approaches recovered coal pillar resources of 2.65×10~6and 5.81×10~6t on the premise of meeting the pipeline safety requirements, and the recovery rates increased by 20.5%and 45.0%,with expenditures representing only 56.46%and 20.02%of the respective benefits. These new approaches provide managers with diverse options for protecting pipeline safety while promoting coal pillar recovery, which is conducive to the harmonic mining of gas-coal resources. 展开更多

Three-dimensional ocean subsurface temperature and salinity structures(OST/OSS)in the South China Sea(SCS)play crucial roles in oceanic climate research and disaster mitigation.Traditionally,real-time OST and OSS are mainly obtained through in-situ ocean observations and simulation by ocean circulation models, which are usually challenging and costly.Recently, dynamical, statistical,or machine learning models have been proposed to invert the OST/OSS from sea surface information;however, these models mainly focused on the inversion of monthly OST and OSS.To address this issue,we apply clustering algorithms and employ a stacking strategy to ensemble three models(XGBoost,Random Forest, and LightGBM)to invert the real-time OST/OSS based on satellite-derived data and the Argo dataset.Subsequently,a fusion of temperature and salinity is employed to reconstruct OST and OSS.In the validation dataset, the depth-averaged Correlation(Corr)of the estimated OST(OSS)is 0.919(0.83),and the average Root-Mean-Square Error(RMSE)is0.639°C(0.087 psu),with a depth-averaged coefficient of determination(R~2)of 0.84(0.68).Notably,at the thermocline where the base models exhibit their maximum error, the stacking-based fusion model exhibited significant performance enhancement, with a maximum enhancement in OST and OSS inversion exceeding 10%.We further found that the estimated OST and OSS exhibit good agreement with the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model(HYCOM)data and BOA_Argo dataset during the passage of a mesoscale eddy. This study shows that the proposed model can effectively invert the real-time OST and OSS,potentially enhancing the understanding of multi-scale oceanic processes in the SCS. 展开更多

The distribution of shear-wave velocities in the subsurface is generally used to assess the potential forseismic liquefaction and soil amplification effects and to classify seismic sites. Newly developeddistributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology enables estimation of the shear-wave distribution as ahigh-density seismic observation system. This technology is characterized by low maintenance costs,high-resolution outputs, and real-time data transmission capabilities, albeit with the challenge ofmanaging massive data generation. Rapid and efficient interpretation of data is the key to advancingapplication of the DAS technology. In this study, field tests were carried out to record ambient noise overa short period using DAS technology, from which the surface-wave dispersion curves were extracted. Inorder to reduce the influence of directional effects on the results, an unsupervised clustering method isused to select appropriate clusters to extract the Green's function. A combination of a genetic algorithmand Monte Carlo (GA-MC) simulation is proposed to invert the subsurface velocity structure. Thestratigraphic profiles obtained by the GA-MC method are in agreement with the borehole profiles.Compared to other methods, the proposed optimization method not only improves the solution qualitybut also reduces the solution time. 展开更多

Most studies have shown that oxygen vacancies on Ce_(x)Zr_(1-x)O_(2) solid solution are important for enhancing the catalytic oxidation performance. However,a handful of studies investigated the different roles of surface and subsurface oxygen vacancies on the performance and mechanisms of catalysts.Herein,a series of zirconium doping on CeO_(2) samples(CeO_(2),Ce_(0.95)Zr_(0.05)O_(2),and Ce_(0.8)5Zr_(0.15)O_(2))with various surface-to-subsurface oxygen vacancies ratios have been synthesized and applied in toluene catalytic oxidation. The obtained Ce_(0.95)Zr_(0.05)O_(2) exhibits an excellent catalytic performance with a 90%toluene conversion at 295℃,which is 68℃lower than that of CeO_(2).Additionally,the obtained Ce_(0.95)Zr_(0.05)O_(2)catalyst also exhibited good catalytic stability and water resistance. The XRD and HRTEM results show that Zr ions are incorporated into CeO_(2) lattice, forming Ce_(x)Zr_(1-x)O_(2) solid solution.Temperature-programmed experiments reveal that Ce_(0.95)Zr_(0.05)O_(2) shows excellent lowtemperature reducibility and abundant surface oxygen species.In-situ DRIFTS tests were used to probe the reaction mechanism, and the function of Zr doping in promoting the activation of oxygen was further determined.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations indicate that the vacancy formation energy and O_(2) adsorption energy are both lower on Ce_(0.95)Zr_(0.05)O_(2),confirming the reason for its superior catalytic performance. 展开更多

We present an improved angle polishing method in which the end of the cover slice near the glue layer is beveled into a thin,defect-free wedge, the straight edge of which is used as the datum for measuring the depth of subsurface damage. The bevel angle can be calculated from the interference fringes formed in the wedge. The minimum depth of the subsurface damage that can be measured by this method is a few hundred nanometers. Our results show that the method is straightforward, accurate, and convenient. 展开更多

Experimental results show that nanogrinding can produce flatness less than 1.0μm and a surface roughness Ra of 0.42nm. It is found that nanogrinding is capable of producing much flatter SiC wafers with a lower damage than double side lapping and mechanical polishing in much less time and it can replace double side lapping and mechanical polishing and reduce the removal amount of chemical mechanical polishing. 展开更多

A molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is carried out to analyze the effect of cutting edge radius, cutdepth, and grinding speed on the depth of subsurface damage layers in monocrystal silicon grinding processes on an atomic scale. The results show that when the cutting edge radius decreases in the nanometric grinding process with the same cut-depth and grinding speed, the depth of the damage layers and the potential energy between the silicon atoms decrease too. Also, when the cut depth increases, both the depth of the damage layers and the potential energy between silicon atoms increase. When the grinding speed is between 20 and 200m/s,the depth of the damage layers does not change much with the increase of the grinding speed under the same cutting edge radius and cut depth conditions. This means that the MD simulation is not sensitive to changes in the grinding speed, and thus increasing the grinding speed properly can shorten the sion, the subsurface damage of monocrystal silicon is silicon atoms, which is verified by the ultra-precision simulation time and enlarge the simulation scale. In conclumainly based on the change of the potential energy between grinding and CMP experiments. 展开更多

Hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))oxidation and reduction reactions(HPOR/HPRR)are pivotal in various innovative electrochemical energy conversion devices.A comprehensive understanding of these mechanisms is critical for catalyst design and performance improvement in these applications. In this work,we systematically investigate the HPOR/HPRR mechanisms on low-index Pt surfaces, specifically Pt(111),Pt(100)and Pt(110),through density functional theory(DFT)calculations combined with the computational hydrogen electrode(CHE)model. For HPOR,all the low-index Pt surfaces exhibit a unified potential-determining step(PDS)involving the electrochemical oxidation of hydroperoxyl intermediates(HOO*).The binding free energy of HOO*(Δ_(GHOO*))emerges as an activity descriptor, with Pt(110)exhibiting the highest HPOR activity. The HPRR mechanism follows a chem-electrochemical(C-EC)pathway.The rate-determining step(RDS)of HPRR is either the cleavage of the HO-OH bond(chemical)or the reduction of HO(electrochemical),depending on their respective activation energies. These activation energies are functions of the HO*binding free energy,Δ_(GHO*),establishingΔ_(GHO*)as the descriptor for HPRR activity prediction.Pt(111)and Pt(100)are identified as the most active HPRR catalysts among the studied metal surfaces, although they still experience a significant overpotential. The scaling relationship betweenΔ_(GHOO*)andΔ_(GHO*)reveals a thermodynamic coupling of HPOR and HPRR,explaining their occurrence on Pt surfaces. These findings provide important insights and activity descriptors for both HPOR and HPRR,providing valuable guidance for the design of electrocatalysts in H_(2)O_(2)-related energy applications and fuel cells. 展开更多

Photodetectors can convert light energy into electrical signals,so are widely used in photovoltaics, photon counting, monitoring, and imaging.Photodetectors are easy to prepare high-resolution photochips because of their small size unit integration. However, these photodetector units often exhibit poor photoelectric performance due to material defects and inadequate structures, which greatly limit the functions of devices.Designing modification strategies and micro-/nanostructures can compensate for defects, adjust the bandgap, and develop novel quantum structures, which consequently optimize photovoltaic units and revolutionize optoelectronic devices. Here, this paper aims to comprehensively elaborate on the surface/interface engineering scheme of micro-/nano-photodetectors.It starts from the fundamentals of photodetectors, such as principles, types, and parameters, and describes the influence of material selection, manufacturing techniques, and post-processing.Then,we analyse in detail the great influence of surface/interface engineering on the performance of photovoltaic devices, including surface/interface modification and micro-/nanostructural design. Finally, the applications and prospects of optoelectronic devices in various fields such as miniaturization of electronic devices, robotics, and human–computer interaction are shown. 展开更多

In this study, polyacrylic acid(PAA)films were employed as a model system, and a series of PAA films with tunable water wettability was systematically prepared by varying molecular weight and curing temperature.Using attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(ATR-FTIR),the molecular configurations of surface carboxyl groups(COOH),free carboxyl(COOH_(f))and hydrogen-bonded carboxyl(COOH_(HB),were directly correlated with the polar component of surface energy(γ^(s,p)).By decomposing theγ^(s,p)values of the PAA thin films as a sum of the contributions of COOH_(f)and COOH_(H B),the intrinsic polar component of surface energy of COOH_(H B)(γ_(H B)^(s,p*))was quantified for the first time as 8.34 mN/m,significantly lower than that of COOH_(f)(γ_(f)^(s,p*)=34 mN/m).This result highlights that hydrogen bonding markedly reduces theγ^(s,p),providing a rational explanation for the relatively large water contact angle observed on PAA thin films.Furthermore,it establishes a thermodynamic basis for estimating the fraction of surface COOH_(H B)groups(f H B)from wettability measurements.Further extension of the model to carboxyl-terminated self-assembled monolayers(COOH-SAMs)revealed that surface COOH density(ΣCOOH)critically regulates wetting behavior:whenΣCOOH ranges from 4.30 to 5.25 nm^(-2),COOH groups predominantly exist in a free state and facilitate effective hydration layers, thereby promoting superhydrophilicity.Overall, this study not only establishes a unified thermodynamic framework linking surface COOH configurations to macroscopic wettability, but also validates its universality by extending it to COOH-SAMs systems, thereby providing a unified theoretical framework for the controllable design of hydrophilicity in various COOH-functionalized surfaces. 展开更多

The atmospheric surface layer of the tropical coastal ocean is commonly very unstable and experiences weakwind conditions. How the latent(LE)and sensible(H)heat fluxes behave under such conditions are unclear because of the lack of observation stations in the tropics. Thus, this study aims to analyze LE and H and the microclimate parameters influencing them. The authors deployed an eddy covariance system in a tropical coastal region for seven months. The microclimate parameters investigated were wind speed(U),vapor pressure deficit(Δe),temperature difference(ΔT),wind-vapor pressure deficit(UΔe),wind-temperature difference(UΔT),and atmospheric stability(z/L),where z is height and L is the Monin–Obukhov length. On the daily time scale, the results show that LE was more associated with U thanΔe,while H was more related toΔT than U.Cross-wavelet analysis revealed the strong coherence in the LE-U relationship for periods between one and two days, and for H–ΔT,0.5 to 1 day.Correlation and regression analyses confirmed the time series analyses results, where strong positive correlation coefficients(r)were obtained between LE and U(r=0.494)and H andΔT(r=0.365).Compared to other water bodies, the transfer coefficient of moisture(CE N)was found to be small(=0.40×10^(-3))and independent of stability;conversely, the transfer coefficient of heat(CH N)was closer to literature values(=1.00×10^(-3))and a function of stability. 展开更多

Undesired ice accumulation on infrastructure and transportation systems leads to catastrophic events and significant economic losses.Although various anti-icing surfaces with photothermal effects can initially prevent icing, any thawy droplets remaining on the horizontal surface can quickly re-freezing once the light diminishes. To address these challenges,we have developed a self-draining slippery surface(SDSS)that enables the thawy droplets to self-remove on the horizontal surface, thereby facilitating real-time anti-icing with the aid of sunlight(100 m W cm^(-2)).This is achieved by sandwiching a thin pyroelectric layer between slippery surface and photothermal film.Due to the synergy between the photothermal and pyroelectric layers, the SDSS not only maintains a high surface temperature of 19.8±2.2℃at the low temperature(-20.0±1.0℃),but also generates amount of charge through thermoelectric coupling. Thus,as cold droplets dropped on the SDSS,electrostatic force pushes the droplets off the charged surface because of the charge transfer mechanism.Even if the surface freezes overnight, the ice can melt and drain off the SDSS within 10 min of exposure to sunlight at-20.0±1.0℃,leaving a clean surface. This work provides a new perspective on the anti-icing system in the real-world environments. 展开更多

The National Geophysical Data Center(NGDC)of the United States has collected aeromagnetic data for input into a series of geomagnetic models to improve model resolution;however,in the Tibetan Plateau region,ground-based observations remain insufficient to clearly reflect the characteristics of the region’s lithospheric magnetism. In this study,we evaluate the lithospheric magnetism of the Tibetan Plateau by using a 3D surface spline model based on observations from>200 newly constructed repeat stations(portable stations)to determine the spatial distribution of plateau geomagnetism,as well as its correlation with the tectonic features of the region. We analyze the relationships between M≥5 earthquakes and lithospheric magnetic field variations on the Tibetan Plateau and identify regions susceptible to strong earthquakes. We compare the geomagnetic results with those from an enhanced magnetic model(EMM2015)developed by the NGDC and provide insights into improving lithospheric magnetic field calculations in the Tibetan Plateau region.Further research reveals that these magnetic anomalies exhibit distinct differences from the magnetic-seismic correlation mechanisms observed in other tectonic settings;here, they are governed primarily by the combined effects of compressional magnetism, thermal magnetism, and deep thermal stress. This study provides new evidence of geomagnetic anomalies on the Tibetan Plateau, interprets them physically, and demonstrates their potential for identifying seismic hazard zones on the Plateau. 展开更多

The presence of a surface oxide film(B_(2)O_(3))on boron(B)particles significantly compromises their combustion efficiency and kinetic performance in fuel-rich solid propellants. This study proposes an innovative continuous modification strategy combining non-thermal plasma(NTP)etching with fluorocarbon passivation.Characterization and kinetic analysis revealed that reactive plasma species—including atomic hydrogen(H),electronically excited molecular hydrogen(H_(2)^(*)),vibrationally excited molecular hydrogen(H_(2)v),and hydrogen ions(H^(+))—dominate the reduction of B_(2)O_(3)through lowering the transition energy barrier and shifting the reaction spontaneity.Subsequent argon plasma fragmentation of C_(8)F_(18)generates fluorocarbon radicals that form conformal passivation coatings(thickness:7 nm)on purified boron surfaces. The modified boron particles exhibit 37.5℃lower exothermic peak temperature and 27.2%higher heat release(14.8 kJ/g vs.11.6 kJ/g)compared to untreated counterparts.Combustion diagnostics reveal 194%increase in maximum flame height(135.10 mm vs.46.03 mm)and 134%enhancement in flame propagation rate(4.44 cm/s vs.1.90 cm/s).This NTP-based surface engineering approach establishes a scalable pathway for developing highperformance boron-based energetic composites. 展开更多

Global warming induced by increased CO_(2) has caused marked changes in the ocean.Previous estimates of ocean salinity change in response to global warming have considerable ambiguity, largely attributable to the diverse sensitivities of surface fluxes. This study utilizes data from the Flux-Anomaly-Forced Model Intercomparison Project to investigate how ocean salinity responds to perturbations of surface fluxes. The findings indicate the emergence of a sea surface salinity(SSS)dipole pattern predominantly in the North Atlantic and Pacific fresh pools, driven by surface flux perturbations. This results in an intensification of the“salty gets saltier and fresh gets fresher”SSS pattern across the global ocean. The spatial pattern amplification(PA)of SSS under global warming is estimated to be approximately 11.5%,with surface water flux perturbations being the most significant contributor to salinity PA,accounting for 8.1% of the change after 70 years in experiments since pre-industrial control(piControl).Notably, the zonal-depth distribution of salinity in the upper ocean exhibits lighter seawater above the denser water, with bowed isopycnals in the upper 400 m.This stable stratification inhibits vertical mixing of salinity and temperature. In response to the flux perturbations, there is a strong positive feedback due to consequent freshening. It is hypothesized that under global warming,an SSS amplification of 7.2%/℃ and a mixed-layer depth amplification of 12.5%/℃ will occur in the global ocean. It suggests that the salinity effect can exert a more stable ocean to hinder the downward transfer of heat, which provides positive feedback to future global warming. 展开更多
