External application of Chinese medicine formula combined with analgesic drugs to treat lung squamous cell carcinoma pain: A case study with mixed methods

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of the external application of Chinese medicine combined with analgesicdrugs to treat lung squamous cell carcinoma pain. Methods: A 54-year-old patient with upper lobe of the left lungsquamous cell carcinoma was studied, who suffered from severe cancer pain with the initial numeric rating scale (NRS)7 point when admitted. Exterior-use formula was applied to pain spot to relieve the pain. Mixed methods approachcomprising NRS, Short-form of McGill Pain Questionnaire, quality of life scale, times of breakout pain, records ofadverse reactions and semi-structured interviews were utilized to evaluate the effect. Results: With the combination useof the formula and analgesic drugs, the patient’s NRS score dropped from 7 to 3 point. Quality of life scale scoreimproved from 33 to 42 point. Times of breakout pain reduced from twice to none. The amount of oxycodone decreasedfrom 30 mg Bid to 10 mg Bid. No adverse effect appeared. The patient’s felt more energetic with good sleep and appetite.Conclusion: This formula is effective and safe for pain relief when combined with analgesic drugs, and may be a goodoption in dealing with local cancer pain. Future randomized, controlled studies are needed to better evaluate the efficacy. 展开更多

This study investigated the application and the effect of Group Investigation(GI) in the College English Program in a Chinese University. A qualitative case study method was used to understand the GI system used by Chinese instructors as well as the achievements acquired and challenges met by the participants. Three instructors and fifteen second-year-undergraduates taking a course titled Sources of European Culture participated. Interviews, observations, and documents were used to collect the data. Data analysis showed Chinese instructors applied a GI technique similar to that discussed by Johnson and Johnson(1999); however, GI in the Chinese context demanded more effort from the teacher for designing tasks and provided help in modeling uses of English and in preparing visual, especially Power Point, presentations. Although participants used their mother tongue at some stages, their autonomy over English learning was activated, and horizons in the course content were broadened. 展开更多

A case study of seismic response of an earth embankment foundation on liquefiable soils in Kansai area,western Japan was presented. Based on a calibrated cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model for liquefiable sand and Biot dynamic coupled theory,the seismic analysis was carried out by using a dynamic effective stress finite element method under plane strain condition. A recent design study was illustrated in detail for a river earth embankment subjected to seismic excitation on the saturated deposits with liquefiable sands. Simulated results of the embankment foundation during liquefaction were obtained for acceleration,displacement,and excess pore water pressures,which were considered to yield useful results for earthquake geotechnical design. The results show that the foundation soil reaches a fully liquefied state with high excess pore pressure ratios approaching to 1.0 due to the earthquake shaking. At the end of the earthquake,the extensive liquefaction causes about 1.0 m lateral spreading at the toe and 60 cm settlement at the crest of the earth embankment. 展开更多

Because of the high importance of transportation tunnels,most precise analyses of stress concentration and displacement around them are essential to provide safety of them as much as possible.Recently,various numerical methods such as finite element method(FEM),discrete element method(DEM),finite difference method(FDM)and boundary element method(BEM)have been used extremely in geosciences problems,but among these numerical methods,BEM has been used less than others because the computational algorithm is not so straightforward.This paper suggests the implementation of the indirect boundary element method(IBEM)as a formulation of BEM to analyze displacement around Shiraz-Esfahan railway tunnel in Zagros Mountains southwest of Iran.For this purpose,this tunnel has been modeled numerically using two-dimensional fictitious stress method(TWOFS)algorithm.To validate the results,they were compared with FEM results as a commonly used numerical method.Results of current theoretical study have shown that the presented approach using IBEM is reasonably accurate and can be used for analysis of displacement in geosciences problems.In rock mechanics,for problems with a low ratio of boundary surface to volume,FEM is not very well suited and may be cumbersome,but use of such a proposed IBEM approach can be particularly attractive. 展开更多

Bluetooth technology emerged over twenty years ago and has continuously improved throughout the years to meet diverse and complex applications. Initially invented to replace the need for physical data cables, Bluetooth offers users a quick and easy way to share data files over a wireless network. Traffic engineers and transportation engineering researchers have utilized the potential opportunities that exist with Bluetooth and have implemented this technology into traffic monitoring techniques. To gain a better understanding of Bluetooth sensors and how they work, a comprehensive literature search was conducted. Twenty-five articles were studied regarding case studies of Bluetooth sensor implementation for travel time measurement. Besides reviewing the literature and previous case studies, three new case studies in the State of Delaware, USA, were also conducted and carefully analyzed. The benefits and drawbacks associated with Bluetooth technology for travel time measurements have been identified in this paper. The overall conclusion of the authors is Bluetooth alone and by itself is not a proper technology for travel time measurements. More studies need to be conducted on the accuracy and overall application, before one can confidently utilize the Bluetooth technology for travel time measurements. 展开更多

The determination of the gravitational potential of a prism plays an important role in physical geodesy and geophysics. However, there are few literatures that provide accurate approaches for determining the gravitational potential of a prism. Discrete element method can be used to determine the gravitational potential of a prism, and can approximate the true gravitational potential values with sufficient accuracy (the smaller each element is, the more accurate the result is). Although Nagy's approach provided a closed expression, one does not know whether it is valid, due to the fact that this approach has not been confirmed in literatures. In this paper, a study on the comparison of Nagy's approach with discrete element method is presented. The results show that Nagy's formulas for determining the gravitational potential of a prism are valid in the domain both inside and outside the prism. 展开更多

Purpose–This study aims to propose a novel subjective assessment(SA)method for level 2 or level 21 advanced driver assistance system(ADAS)with a customized case study in China.Design/methodology/approach–The proposed SA method contains six dimensions,including perception,driveability and stability,riding comfort,human–machine interaction,driver workload and trustworthiness and exceptional operating case,respectively.And each dimension subordinates several subsections,which describe the corresponding details under this dimension.Findings–Based on the proposed SA,a case study in China is conducted.Six drivers with different driving experiences are invited to give their subjective ratings for each subsection according to a predefined rating standard.The rating results show that the ADAS from Tesla outperforms the upcoming electric vehicle in most cases.Originality/value–The proposed SA method is beneficial for the original equipment manufacturers developing related technologies in the future. 展开更多

AIMTo describe the development and validation of a novel neuronavigation-based method, which allows the quan-tification of the anatomical features that define anapproach, as well as real-time visualization of the surgicapyramid. METHODSThe method was initially developed with commercially-available hardware for coordinate collection (a digitizerand a frameless navigation system) and software forvolume rendering; dedicated neuronavigation software (ApproachViewer, part of GTx-UHN) was then developed. The accuracy of measurements and the possibility of volumetric rendering of surgical approaches simulated in a phantom were compared among three different methods and commercially-available radiological software. In the anatomy laboratory, ApproachViewer was applied to the comparative quantitative analysis of multiple neurosurgical approaches and was used by many surgeons who were untrained for the research method.RESULTSThe accuracy of ApproachViewer is comparable to com-mercially-available radiological software. In the anatomy laboratory, the method appears versatile. The system can be easily used after brief training. ApproachViewer allows for real-time evaluation and comparison of surgical approaches, as well as post-dissection analyses of collected data. The accuracy of the method depends on the navigation registration: with a 1-2 mm registration error, it is adequate for evaluation and comparison of most neurosurgical approaches.CONCLUSIONThis new research method and software allows semi-automated visualization, quantifcation, and comparison of neurosurgical approaches in the anatomy laboratory. 展开更多

This article presents a micro-structure tensor enhanced elasto-plastic finite element(FE)method to address strength anisotropy in three-dimensional(3D)soil slope stability analysis.The gravity increase method(GIM)is employed to analyze the stability of 3D anisotropic soil slopes.The accuracy of the proposed method is first verified against the data in the literature.We then simulate the 3D soil slope with a straight slope surface and the convex and concave slope surfaces with a 90turning corner to study the 3D effect on slope stability and the failure mechanism under anisotropy conditions.Based on our numerical results,the end effect significantly impacts the failure mechanism and safety factor.Anisotropy degree notably affects the safety factor,with higher degrees leading to deeper landslides.For concave slopes,they can be approximated by straight slopes with suitable boundary conditions to assess their stability.Furthermore,a case study of the Saint-Alban test embankment A in Quebec,Canada,is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed FE model. 展开更多

Based on the Reddy's theory of plates with the effect of higher-order shear deformations, the governing equations for bending of orthotropic plates with finite deformations were established. The differential quadrature (DQ) method of nonlinear analysis to the problem was presented. New DQ approach, presented by Wang and Bert (DQWB), is extended to handle the multiple boundary conditions of plates. The techniques were also further extended to simplify nonlinear computations. The numerical convergence and comparison of solutions were studied. The results show that the DQ method presented is very reliable and valid. Moreover, the influences of geometric and material parameters as well as the transverse shear deformations on nonlinear bending were investigated. Numerical results show the influence of the shear deformation on the static bending of orthotropic moderately thick plate is significant. 展开更多

This paper studies the excavation collapse at the Xianghu subway station on Hangzhou metro line 1.The objective is to present an overview of this case study and discuss the cause of the failure.Through field investigation and preliminary analysis,the reasons for the excavation collapse were the misuse of the soil parameters,over excavation,incorrect installation of steel struts,invalid monitoring data,and inadequate ground improvement.Finally,a small strain constitutive model was used for further analysis.In order to estimate damage efficiently,the orthogonal array(OA) was introduced for screening the key factor in the numerical experiments.Six estimated indexes including deformations and internal forces of the excavation were taken,and the effectiveness of four factors which may cause the collapse was evaluated.Through numerical experiments and interaction analysis,it is found that the deformation and internal force can be well controlled by jet grouting of the subsoil under the final cutting surface,but increasing the improvement ratio of the jet grouting cannot help optimize the excavation behavior efficiently,and without jet grouting and the fourth level struts,the deformation and internal force of the excavation in this case will far surpass the allowable value. 展开更多

目的探讨基于循证医学PICOS模式的案例教学法教学在提高耳科医学教学质量中的作用及应用实践。方法以随机抽样的方法共纳入郑州大学第一附属医院2022级的60名医学生作为研究对象,以随机数字表法将其平均分为两组,对照组采取常规教学模式... 目的探讨基于循证医学PICOS模式的案例教学法教学在提高耳科医学教学质量中的作用及应用实践。方法以随机抽样的方法共纳入郑州大学第一附属医院2022级的60名医学生作为研究对象,以随机数字表法将其平均分为两组,对照组采取常规教学模式,研究组采取基于循证医学PICOS模式的CBL教学模式。比较两组教学质量、学生成绩以及学生满意度情况。结果相比对照组,研究组的理论知识成绩(94.23±2.88 vs.84.59±2.77)、技能操作成绩(93.86±2.41 vs.86.20±2.78)均较高,且差异具有统计学意义(P<0.05)。相比对照组,研究组的教学内容理解(15.12±1.03 vs.12.43±1.20)、教学方法认可(16.02±0.82 vs.12.43±1.20)、教师认可(16.48±1.32 vs.13.55±1.45)以及教学课程期待(17.65±1.09 vs.13.11±1.20)等教学质量评分更高,且差异具有统计学意义(P<0.05)。较对照组,研究组学生对增强分析能力(96.67%vs.73.33%)、促进重难点知识掌握(90.00%vs.66.67%)、加强理论知识记忆(93.33%vs.70.00%)、开拓眼界(96.67%vs.73.33%)、激发学习兴趣(100.00%vs.76.67%)、提高学习效率(96.67%vs.73.33%)6个方面的满意度更高(P<0.05)。结论基于循证医学PICOS模式的CBL教学应用于耳科医学教学中可明显提高教学成绩和教学质量,学生对该教学模式的满意度较高,应用价值理想。 展开更多
