However, conventional epitaxial approaches are fundamentally constrained by the limited choice of substrates, which restricts the ability to achieve continuous strain modulation. The emergence of freestanding oxide thin films has significantly expanded the scope of strain manipulation, allowing the application of larger tensile strains and the induction of novel functionalities. Nevertheless, current freestanding film technologies face a critical limitation: strain modulation has so far been confined to tensile strain, while the application of compressive strain remains inaccessible. To overcome this challenge, we designed a symmetric tri-layer structure composed of clamping layer/nickelate/clamping layer, which enables modulation of the metal-insulator transition in freestanding Nd NiO_(3) and La NiO_(3) thin films under both tensile and compressive strain. This clamping-layermediated strain engineering approach can be readily generalized to other freestanding oxide systems, providing a versatile platform for manipulating the physical properties of freestanding thin films.展开更多

Microstrain in PSCs is currently a significant factor responsible for the device's instability. Strain-induced ion migration is widely believed to accelerate perovskite degradation even when external stimuli are excluded.Undoubtedly, it is imperative to study strain to enhance the stability of PSCs. This paper reviews recent developments to understand strain's origin and effect mechanisms on performance of PSCs, including ion migration, failure behavior, defect formation, and its effect on photoelectric properties, stability, and reliability.Additionally, several well-known strain management strategies are systematically introduced based on the strain effect mechanism and strain engineering on the film, providing more clues for further preparation with increased stability. The manipulation of external physical strain applied from films to entire devices has been extensively studied. Furthermore, recommendations for future research directions and chemical approaches have been provided. It is emphasized that strain engineering plays a crucial role in improving the efficiency and longevity of PSCs. Tensile strain causes rapid degradation, while moderate compressive strain and external strain control could improve properties and stability. Efforts should focus on controlling compressive strain to mitigate residual tensile strain and introducing it in a controlled manner. Future research endeavors may focus on exploring these pathways to improve the efficiency and lifespan of PSCs.展开更多

文摘Strain engineering serves as an effective approach for tuning the properties of transition metal oxides and their heterostructures. This clamping-layermediated strain engineering approach can be readily generalized to other freestanding oxide systems, providing a versatile platform for manipulating the physical properties of freestanding thin films.

文摘Lattice distortion of materials has a profound impact on their electronic and magnetic properties, which can generate local magnetic states in intrinsically non-magnetic systems. Here we report on the realization of a one-dimensional(1D)magnetic stripe in monolayer H-NbSe_(2)sustained by strain along the terraces of the graphene/SiC substrates. The strength of this tensile strain is widely tunable by the height-to-width ratio of the terraces.Increasing the tensile strength leads to the shifts and splitting of the Nb 4d bands crossing the Fermi energy, generating spin polarization in a 1D magnetic stripe along the terrace.Simultaneously, the charge-densitywave signature of strained H-NbSe_(2)is significantly suppressed.Such a magnetic stripe can be locally quenched by an individual Se-atom defect via the defect-induced Jahn-Teller distortion and charge density redistribution. These findings provide a different route to achieving and manipulating 1D magnetism in otherwise non-magnetic systems, offering a new way for spintronic devices.

文摘Recent advances in strain engineering have enabled unprecedented control over quantum states in strongly correlated magnetic systems. However, nanoscale strain modulation of charge density waves(CDWs)and magnetically excited states, which is crucial for atomically precise strain engineering and practical spintronic applications, remains unexplored. Here,we report the nanoscale strain effects on CDWs and low-energy electronic states in the van der Waals antiferromagnetic metal GdTe_(3),utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy.Lowtemperature cleavage introduces local strains, resulting in the formation of nanoscale wrinkles on the GdTe_(3)surface.Atomic displacement analysis reveals two distinct types of wrinkles:Wrinkle-I,originating from unidirectional strain, and Wrinkle-II,dominated by shear strain. In Wrinkle-I,the tensile strain enhances the CDW gap, while the compressive strain induces a single low-energy magnetic state.Wrinkle-II switches the orientation of CDW,leading to the formation of an associated CDW domain wall.In addition, three low-energy magnetic states that exhibit magnetic field-dependent shifts and intensity variations emerge within the CDW gap around Wrinkle-II,indicative of a strain-tuned coupling between CDW order and localized 4f-electron magnetism. These findings establish nanoscale strain as a powerful tuning knob for manipulating intertwined electronic and magnetic excitations in correlated magnetic systems.

文摘Photovoltaic metal halide perovskite solar cells(PSCs) convert light to electricity more efficiently than crystalline silicon cells, and the cost of materials used to make them is lower than that of silicon cells.Conversion efficiency is not a core issue affecting the application of perovskite solar cells in special scenarios. At present, stability is the major technical encounters that hinders its further commercial development. Future research endeavors may focus on exploring these pathways to improve the efficiency and lifespan of PSCs.

文摘Fracture strain becomes critical for the local formability and crash performance of carbody components when the tensile strength exceeds 1000 MPa.Regrettably,high-strength quenching and partitioning(Q&P)steels and dual-phase(DP)steels always focus on improving the tensile ductility for stretch formability, while ignoring their limited fracture strain. In this work,we explored a novel strategy,i.e.,developing a high fracture strain ferrite-martensite dual-phase steel(HFS-DP)maintaining good strength–ductility balance by suppressing intense strain localization during deformation and enhancing martensite deformability via microstructure design including grain refinement,nano-precipitate hardening in soft ferrite phase,low-carbon and high fraction martensite.HFS-DP demonstrates a remarkable 26%and 47%improvement in tensile ductility and fracture strain, respectively, compared to commercial DP1180 steel with similar ultimate tensile strength.Furthermore,HFS-DP also exhibits a substantial 39%improvement in fracture strain compared to retained austenite-involved commercial QP1180 steel. The detailed processes of strain partitioning, strain localization, and damage formation during deformation were revealed through in-situ scanning electron microscopy(SEM)observation combined with digital image correlation(DIC).The results indicate that the excellent coordinated deformation between ferrite and martensite, coupled with microstructure refinement, effectively suppresses intense strain localization. Moreover, the excellent martensite deformability resulting from the low carbon content also aids in retarding crack formation. This combination effectively suppresses damage initiation and development during deformation, therefore the fracture strain is significantly improved. This study not only contributes to a deeper understanding of the strain localization and damage process during tensile deformation of DP steels, but also provides a new perspective on designing ultrahigh strength steels with high ductility and fracture strain.

文摘Recent advances in additive manufacturing have enabled the construction of metallic lattice structures with tailored mechanical and functional properties. One potential application of metallic lattice struc-tures is in the impact load mitigation where an external kinetic energy is absorbed by the deformation/crushing of lattice cells. This has motivated a growing number of experimental and numerical studies, recently,on the crushing behavior of additively produced lattice structures. The present study overviews the dynamic and quasi-static crushing behavior of additively produced Ti64,316L,and AlSiMg alloy lattice structures. The first part of the study summarizes the main features of two most commonly used additive processing techniques for lattice structures, namely selective-laser-melt(SLM)and electro-beam-melt(EBM),along with a description of commonly observed process induced defects. In the second part, the deformation and strain rate sensitivities of the selected alloy lattices are outlined together with the most widely used dynamic test methods, followed by a part on the observed micro-structures of the SLM and EBM-processed Ti64,316L and AlSiMg alloys. Finally, the experimental and numerical studies on the quasi-static and dynamic compression behavior of the additively processed Ti64,316L,and AlSiMg alloy lattices are reviewed. The results of the experimental and numerical studies of the dynamic properties of various types of lattices, including graded,non-uniform strut size,hollow,non-uniform cell size, and bio-inspired,were tabulated together with the used dynamic testing methods. The dynamic tests have been noted to be mostly conducted in compression Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB)or Taylor-and direct-impact tests using the SHPB set-up,in all of which relatively small-size test specimens were tested. The test specimen size effect on the compression behavior of the lattices was further emphasized. It has also been shown that the lattices of Ti64 and AlSiMg alloys are relatively brittle as compared with the lattices of 316L alloy. Finally, the challenges associated with modelling lattice structures were explained and the micro tension tests and multi-scale modeling techniques combining microstructural characteristics with macroscopic lattice dynamics were recommended to improve the accuracy of the numerical simulations of the dynamic compression deformations of metallic lattice structures.

文摘The torsional low strain integrity test(TLSIT),known for its advantages such as a smaller detection blind zone, improved identification of shallowly buried defects, stable phase velocity for signal interpretation, and better adaptability for existing pile testing. However,it lacks a comprehensive understanding of the authentic three-dimensional(3D)strain wave propagation mechanism, particularly wave reflection and transmission at defects. To address this gap,a novel 3D theoretical framework is introduced in this context to model the authentic 3D wave propagation during the TLSIT.The proposed approach is validated by comparing its results with those obtained from 3D finite element method(FEM)simulations and simplified 1D(one-dimensional)and 3D analytical solutions.Additionally,a parametric study is conducted to enhance insights into the formation mechanism of high-frequency interference observed during the TLSIT.Finally,a defect identification study is performed to provide guidance for interpreting the wave spectrum in terms of defect characteristics.

文摘The acuurate prediction of the time-dependent mechanical behavior and deformation mechanisms of second-phase reinforced alloys under size effects is critical for the development of high-strength ductile metals and alloys for dynamic applications. However, solving their responses using high-fidelity numerical methods is computationally expensive and,in many cases, impractical. To address this issue,a dual-scale incremental variational formulation is proposed that incorporates the influence of plastic gradients on plastic evolution characteristics, integrating a strain-rate-dependent strain gradient plasticity model and including plastic gradients in the inelastic dissipation potential.Subsequently, two minimization problems based on the energy dissipation mechanisms of strain gradient plasticity, corresponding to the macroscopic and microscopic structures, are solved, leading to the development of a homogenization-based dual-scale solution algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness of the variational model and tangent algorithm is validated through a series of numerical simulations. The contributions of this work are as follows:first,it advances the theory of self-consistent computational homogenization modeling based on the energy dissipation mechanisms of plastic strain rates and their gradients, along with the development of a rigorous multi-level finite element method(FE2)solution procedure;second, the proposed algorithm provides an efficient and accurate method for evaluating the time-dependent mechanical behavior of second-phase reinforced alloys under strain gradient effects, exploring how these effects vary with the strain rate, and investigating their potential interactions.

文摘Floating offshore wind turbine platforms typically use stiffened tubular joints at the connections between columns and braces. These joints are prone to fatigue due to complex weld geometries and the additional stress concentrations caused by the stiffeners.Existing hot-spot stress approaches may be inadequate for analysing these joints because they do not simultaneously address weld-toe and weld-root failures. To address these limitations, this study evaluates the fatigue strength of stiffened tubular joints using the effective notch strain approach and the structural strain approach. Both methods account for fatigue at the weld toe and weld root and can be applied to both low-cycle fatigue(LCF)and high-cycle fatigue(HCF)regimes.Reanalyzes of a series of fatigue-tested specimens confirm the effectiveness of both approaches. The stiffener-shell fillet weld root is identified as the most critical fatigue location, which is consistent with fractographic observations.Although the brace-to-shell weld root exhibits lower stress levels in finite element(FE)models, weld quality was determined to be a crucial factor in fatigue failure.Furthermore, the results emphasise the importance of material plasticity in the LCF regime and demonstrate that full weld penetration significantly enhances fatigue strength. These findings provide valuable insights for the fatigue design of stiffened tubular joints in floating offshore wind turbine platforms.

文摘The oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is a crucial step in metal-air batteries and water splitting technologies, playing a significant role in the efficiency and achievable heights of these two technologies. However, the OER is a four-step,four-electron reaction, and its slow kinetics result in high overpotentials, posing a challenge. To address this issue, numerous strategies involving modified catalysts have been proposed and proven to be highly efficient. In these strategies, the introduction of strain has been widely reported because it is generally believed to effectively regulate the electronic structure of metal sites and alter the adsorption energy of catalyst surfaces with reaction intermediates. However, strain has many other effects that are not well known, making it an important yet unexplored area.Based on this, this review provides a detailed introduction to the various roles of strain in OER.To better explain these roles, the review also presents the definition of strain and elucidates the potential mechanisms of strain in OER based on the d-band center theory and adsorption volcano plot.Additionally, the review showcases various ways of introducing strain in OER through examples reported in the latest literature, aiming to provide a comprehensive perspective for the development of strain engineering. Finally, the review analyzes the appropriate proportion of strain introduction, compares compressive and tensile strain, and examines the impact of strain on stability. And the review offers prospects for future research directions in this emerging field.

文摘The complex wiring, bulky data collection devices, and difficulty in fast and on-site data interpretation significantly limit the practical application of flexible strain sensors as wearable devices. To tackle these challenges, this work develops an artificial intelligenceassisted, wireless, flexible, and wearable mechanoluminescent strain sensor system(AIFWMLS)by integration of deep learning neural network-based color data processing system(CDPS)with a sandwich-structured flexible mechanoluminescent sensor(SFLC)film. The SFLC film shows remarkable and robust mechanoluminescent performance with a simple structure for easy fabrication. The CDPS system can rapidly and accurately extract and interpret the color of the SFLC film to strain values with auto-correction of errors caused by the varying color temperature, which significantly improves the accuracy of the predicted strain.A smart glove mechanoluminescent sensor system demonstrates the great potential of the AIFWMLS system in human gesture recognition. Moreover, the versatile SFLC film can also serve as a encryption device. The integration of deep learning neural network-based artificial intelligence and SFLC film provides a promising strategy to break the“color to strain value”bottleneck that hinders the practical application of flexible colorimetric strain sensors, which could promote the development of wearable and flexible strain sensors from laboratory research to consumer markets.

文摘The dominated contradiction in optimizing the performance of magnesium-air battery anode lies in the difficulty of achieving a good balance between activation and passivation during discharge process. To further reconcile this contradiction, two Mg-0.1Sc-0.1Y-0.1Ag anodes with different residual strain distribution through extrusion with/without annealing are fabricated. The results indicate that annealing can significantly lessen the“pseudo-anode”regions,thereby changing the dissolution mode of the matrix and achieving an effective dissolution during discharge.Additionally,p-type semiconductor characteristic of discharge productfilm could suppress the self-corrosion reaction without reducing the polarization of anode. The magnesium-air battery utilizing annealed Mg-0.1Sc-0.1Y-0.1Ag as anode achieves a synergistic improvement in specific capacity(1388.89 mA h g^(-1))and energy density(1960.42 mW h g^(-1)).This anode modification method accelerates the advancement of high efficiency and long lifespan magnesium-air batteries, offering renewable and cost-effective energy solutions for electronics and emergency equipment.

文摘Hot deformation with high strain rate has been paid more attention due to its high efficiency and low cost, however, the strain rate dependent dynamic recrystallization(DRX)and texture evolution in hot deformation process, which affect the formability of metals, are lack of study. In this work, the DRX behavior and texture evolution of Mg-8Gd-1Er-0.5Zr alloy hot compressed with strain rates of 0.1 s^(−1),1 s^(−1),10 s^(−1) and 50 s^(−1) are studied, and the corresponding dominant mechanisms for DRX and texture weakening are discussed. Results indicated the DRX fraction was 20%and the whole texture intensity was 16.89 MRD when the strain rate was 0.1 s^(−1),but they were 76%and 6.55 MRD,respectively, when the strain rate increased to 50 s^(−1).The increment of DRX fraction is suggested to result from the reduced DRX critical strain and the increased dislocation density as well as velocity, while the weakened whole texture is attributed to the increased DRX grains. At the low strain rate of 0.1 s^(−1),discontinuous DRX(DDRX)was the dominant, but the whole texture was controlled by the deformed grains with the preferred orientation of{0001}⊥CD,because the number of DDRX grains was limited. At the high strain rate of 50 s^(−1),continuous DRX(CDRX)and twin-induced DRX(TDRX)were promoted, and more DRX grains resulted in orientation randomization. The whole texture was mainly weakened by CDRX and TDRX grains,in which CDRX plays a major role. The results of present work are significant for understanding the hot workability of Mg-RE alloys with a high strain rate.
文摘Although time-dependent deformation of geomaterials underpins slope-failure prediction models, the influence of strain rate on shearing strength and deformation behavior of loess remains unclear. The consolidated undrained(CU)and drained(CD)triaxial testing elucidated the impact of strain rate(0.005–0.3 mm/min)on strength envelopes, deformation moduli, pore pressures, and dilatancy characteristics of unsaturated and quasi-saturated loess.Under drained conditions with a controlled matric suction of 50 kPa,increasing strain rates from 0.005 mm/min to 0.011 mm/min induced decreases in failure deviatoric stress(qf),initial deformation modulus(Ei),and cohesion(c),while friction angles remained unaffected.Specimens displayed initial contractive volumetric strains transitioning to dilation across varying confining pressures.Higher rates diminished contractive volumetric strains and drainage volumes, indicating reduced densification and strength in the shear zone.Under undrained conditions, both unsaturated and quasi-saturated(pore pressure coefficient B=0.75)loess exhibited deteriorating mechanical properties with increasing rates from 0.03 mm/min to 0.3 mm/min.For unsaturated loess, reduced contractive volumetric strains at higher rates manifested relatively looser structures in the pre-peak stress phase. The strength decrement in quasi-saturated loess arose from elevated excess porewater pressures diminishing effective stresses.Negative porewater pressures emerged in quasi-saturated loess at lower confining pressures and strain rates.Compared to previous studies, the qf and Ei exhibited rate sensitivity below threshold values before attaining minima with marginal subsequent influence. The underlying mechanism mirrors the transition from creep to accelerated deformation phase of landslides.

文摘As the main geomaterials for coral reefs oil or gas extraction and underground infrastructure construction, coral reef limestone demonstrates significantly distinct mechanical responses compared to terrigenous rocks. To investigate the mechanical behaviour of coral reef limestone under the coupling impact of size and strain rate, the uniaxial compression tests were conducted on reef limestone samples with length-to-diameter(L/D)ratio ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 at strain rate ranging from 10^(−5)·s^(−1)to 10^(−2)·s^(−1).It is revealed that the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)and residual compressive strength(RCS)of coral reef limestone exhibits a decreasing trend with L/D ratio increasing. The dynamic increase factor(DIF)of UCS is linearly correlated with the logarithm of strain rate, while increasing the L/D ratio further enhances the DIF.The elastic modulus increases with strain rate or L/D ratio increasing, whereas the Poisson’s ratio approximates to a constant value of 0.24.The failure strain increases with strain rate increasing or L/D ratio decreasing, while the increase in L/D ratio will inhibit the enhancing effect of the strain rate. The high porosity and low mineral strength are the primary factors contributing to a high RCS of 16.7%–64.9%of UCS,a lower brittleness index and multiple irregular fracture planes. The failure pattern of coral reef limestone transits from the shear-dominated to the splitting-dominated failure with strain rate increasing or L/D ratio decreasing, which is mainly governed by the constrained zones induced by end friction and the strain rate-dependent crack propagation. Moreover,a predictive formula incorporating coupling effect of size and strain rate for the UCS of reef limestone was established and verified to effectively capture the trend of UCS.

文摘Based on the investigation of mechanical response and microstructure evolution of a commercial 7003 aluminum alloy under high-speed impact,a new simple and effective method was proposed to determine the critical strain required for the nucleation of adiabatic shear band(ASB).The deformation results of cylindrical and hat-shaped samples show that the critical strain required for ASB nucleation corresponds to the strain at the first local minimum after peak stress on the first derivative curve of true stress−true strain. The method of determining the critical strain for the nucleation of ASB through the first derivative of the flow stress curve is named the first derivative method. The proposed first derivative method is not only applicable to the 7003 aluminum alloy, but also to other metal materials, such as commercial purity titanium,WY-100 steel, and AM80 magnesium alloy. This proves that it has strong universality.

文摘Wearable thermoelectric devices hold significant promise in the realm of self-powered wearable electron-ics,offering applications in energy harvesting, movement tracking, and health monitoring.Nevertheless, developing thermoelectric devices with exceptional flexibility, enduring thermoelectric stability,multi-functional sensing, and comfortable wear remains a challenge. In this work,a stretchable MXene-based thermoelectric fabric is designed to accurately discern temperature and strain stimuli. This is achieved by constructing an adhesive polydopamine(PDA)layer on the nylon fabric surface, which facilitates the subsequent MXene attachment through hydrogen bonding. This fusion results in MXene-based thermo-electric fabric that excels in both temperature sensing and strain sensing. The resultant MXene-based thermoelectric fabric exhibits outstanding temperature detection capability and cyclic stability, while also delivering excellent sensitivity, rapid responsiveness(60 ms),and remarkable durability in strain sens-ing(3200 cycles). Moreover, when affixed to a mask, this MXene-based thermoelectric fabric utilizes the temperature difference between the body and the environment to harness body heat, converting it into electrical energy and accurately discerning the body’s respiratory rate.In addition, the MXene-based ther-moelectric fabric can monitor the state of the body’s joint through its own deformation.Furthermore,it possesses the capability to convert solar energy into heat. These findings indicate that MXene-based ther-moelectric fabric holds great promise for applications in power generation, motion tracking, and health monitoring.
