Steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC)has drawn extensive attention in recent years for its superior mechanical response to dynamic and impact loadings.Based on the existing test results, the highstrength steel fibers embedded in a concrete matrix usually play a strong bridging effect to enhance the bonding force between fiber and the matrix, and directly contribute to the improvement of the post-cracking behavior and residual strength of SFRC.To gain a better understanding of the action behavior of steel fibers in matrix and further capture the failure mechanism of SFRC under dynamic loads, the mesoscopic modeling approach that assumes SFRC to be composed of different mesoscale phases(i.e.,steel fibers, coarse aggregates, mortar matrix, and interfacial transition zone(ITZ))has been widely employed to simulate the dynamic responses of SFRC material and structural members. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art mesoscopic models and simulations for SFRC under dynamic loading.Generation approaches for the SFRC mesoscale model in the simulation works, including steel fiber, coarse aggregate, and the ITZ between them, are reviewed and compared systematically. The material models for different phases and the interaction relationship between fiber and concrete matrix are summarized comprehensively.Additionally, some example applications for SFRC under dynamic loads(i.e.,compression,tension,and contact blast)simulated using the general mesoscale models are given. Finally, some critical analysis on the current shortcomings of the mesoscale modeling of SFRC is highlighted, which is of great significance for the future investigation and development of SFRC. 展开更多

This work reviews models and methods for determining the dynamic response of pavements to moving vehicle loads in the framework of continuum-based three dimensional models and linear theories. This review emphasizes the most representative models and methods of analysis in the existing literature and illustrates all of them by numerical examples.Thus,13 such examples are presented here in some detail. Both flexible and rigid(concrete)pavement models involving simple and elaborate cases with respect to geometry and material behavior are considered. Thus, homogeneous or layered half-spaces with isotropic or cross-anisotropic and elastic, viscoelastic or poroelastic properties are considered. The vehicles are modeled as simple point or distributed loads or discrete spring-mass-dashpot system moving with constant or variable velocity. The dynamic response of the above pavement-vehicle systems is obtained by analytical/numerical or purely numerical methods of solution.Analytical/numerical methods have mainly to do with Fourier transforms or complex Fourier series with respect to both space and time.Purely numerical methods involve the finite element method(FEM)and the boundary element method(BEM)working in time or frequency domain.Critical discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of the various pavement-vehicle models and their methods of analysis are provided and the effects of the main parameters on the pavement response are determined through parametric studies and presented in the examples. Finally, conclusions are provided and suggestions for future research are made. 展开更多

This paper proposes a dynamic load balancing with learning model for a Sudoku problem solving system that has multiple workers and multiple solvers. The objective is to minimise the total processing time of problem solving. Our load balancing with learning model distributes each Sudoku problem to an appropriate pair of worker and solver when it is received by the system. The information of the estimated solution time for a specific number of given input values, the estimated finishing time of each worker, and the idle status of each worker is used to determine the worker-solver pairs. In addition, the proposed system can estimate the waiting period for each problem.Test results show that the system has shorter processing time than conventional alternatives. 展开更多

This paper gives an insight on the effect of transmission line temperature variations, resulting from loading and weather conditions changes, on a power system's steady state and dynamic performance. The impact of dynamic load models on system stability is also studied. The steady-state and dynamic stability simulation results of a 39 bus system for constant line impedance (the traditional simulation practice) are compared to the results with estimated, but realistic, temperature varied line impedances using PSLF (positive sequence load flow) software. The modulated line impedances will affect the thermal loading levels and voltage profiles of buses under steady state response, while the dynamic results will show improved damping in electro-mechanical oscillations at generator buses. 展开更多

Concrete materials are employed extensively in a variety of large-scale structures due to their economic viability and superior mechanical properties.During the service life of concrete structures, they are inevitably subjected to damage from impact loading from natural disasters, such as earthquakes and storms. In recent years, the phasefield model has demonstrated exceptional capability in predicting the stochastic initiation, propagation, and bifurcation of cracks in materials. This study employs a phase-field model to focus on the rate dependency and failure response of concrete under impact deformation.A viscosity coefficient is introduced within the phase-field model to characterize the viscous behavior of dynamic crack propagation in concrete. The rate-dependent cohesive strength is defined within the yield function of concrete, where the rate sensitivity of cohesive strength facilitates the accumulation of the plastic driving force in the phase-field model. This process effectively captures the impact failure response of concrete. The applicability of the model was validated through unit cell experiments and numerical simulations of concrete under impact compression.Furthermore, the mechanical response and damage evolution mechanisms of concrete under impact loading were analyzed. It was observed that crack propagation in concrete initiates at material defects and, with increasing load, eventually develops in a direction perpendicular to the loading axis. 展开更多

Captive model tests are one of the most common methods to calculate the maneuvering hydrodynamic coefficients and characteristics of surface and underwater vehicles.Considerable attention must be paid to selecting and designing the most suitable laboratory equipment for towing tanks.A computational fluid dynamics(CFD)-based method is implemented to determine the loads acting on the towing facility of the submarine model.A reversed topology is also used to ensure the appropriateness of the load cells in the developed method. In this study, the numerical simulations were evaluated using the experimental results of the SUBOFF benchmark submarine model of the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency. The maximum and minimum loads acting on the 2.5-meter submarine model were measured by determining the body’s lightest and heaviest maneuvering test scenarios. In addition to having sufficient endurance against high loads, the precision in measuring the light load was also investigated. The horizontal planar motion mechanism(HPMM)facilities in the National Iranian Marine Laboratory were developed by locating the load cells inside the submarine model. The results were presented as a case study.A numerical-based method was developed to obtain the appropriate load measurement facilities.Load cells of HPMM test basins can be selected by following the two-way procedure presented in this study. 展开更多

Seismicity resulting from the near-or in-field fault activation significantly affects the stability of large-scale underground caverns that are operating under high-stress conditions.A comprehensive scientific assessment of the operational safety of such caverns requires an in-depth understanding of the response characteristics of the rock mass subjected to dynamic disturbances. To address this issue,we conducted true triaxial modeling tests and dynamic numerical simulations on large underground caverns to investigate the impact of static stress levels, dynamic load parameters, and input directions on the response characteristics of the surrounding rock mass. The findings reveal that:(1)When subjected to identical incident stress waves and static loads, the surrounding rock mass exhibits the greatest stress response during horizontal incidence. When the incident direction is fixed, the mechanical response is more pronounced at the cavern wall parallel to the direction of dynamic loading.(2)A high initial static stress level specifically enhances the impact of dynamic loading.(3)The response of the surrounding rock mass is directly linked to the amplitude of the incident stress wave.High amplitude results in tensile damage in regions experiencing tensile stress concentration under static loading and shear damage in regions experiencing compressive stress concentration. These results have significant implications for the evaluation and prevention of dynamic disasters in the surrounding rock of underground caverns experiencing dynamic disturbances. 展开更多

This work presents a novel approach to the dynamic response analysis of a Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a Winkler soil model and subjected to an impact loading. The approach considers that damping has much less importance in controlling the maximum response to impulsive loadings because the maximum response is reached in a very short time, before the damping forces can dissipate a significant portion of the energy input into the system. The development of two sine series solutions, relating to different types of impulsive loadings, one involving a single concentrated force and the other a distributed line load, are presented. This study revealed that when a simply supported Euler-Bernoulli beam, resting on a Winkler soil model,is subject to an impact load, the resulting vertical displacements, bending moments and shear forces produced along the span of the beam are considerably affected. In particular, the quantification of this effect is best observed, relative to the corresponding static solution, via an amplification factor. The computed impact amplification factors, for the sub-grade moduli used in this study, were in magnitude greater than 2,thus confirming the multiple-degree-of-freedom nature of the problem. 展开更多

The model can synthetically describe the dynamic behavior of the load of slewing crane in rotating, elevating and hoisting motions. The dynamic equations of the system are recursively derived by a Newton Euler method. The dynamic behavior of the load of slewing crane in rotating motion is simulated on a computer. The method of robotic dynamics to derive the dynamic equations of the swing of load is accurate and convenient and it has good regularity. The result of the study provides a base in theory on design of crane and an accurate mathematical model for controlling the swing of load. 展开更多

Industry foundation classes(IFC)is an open and neutral data format specification for building information modeling(BIM)that plays a crucial role in facilitating interoperability. With increases in web-based BIM applications, there is an urgent need for fast loading large IFC models on a web browser. However, the task of fully loading large IFC models typically consumes a large amount of memory of a web browser or even crashes the browser, and this significantly limits further BIM applications. In order to address the issue,a method is proposed for dynamically loading IFC models based on spatial semantic partitioning(SSP).First, the spatial semantic structure of an input IFC model is partitioned via the extraction of story information and establishing a component space index table on the server.Subsequently, based on user interaction, only the model data that a user is interested in is transmitted, loaded, and displayed on the client. The presented method is implemented via Web Graphics Library, and this enables large IFC models to be fast loaded on the web browser without requiring any plug-ins.When compared with conventional methods that load all IFC model data for display purposes, the proposed method significantly reduces memory consumption in a web browser, thereby allowing the loading of large IFC models. When compared with the existing method of spatial partitioning for 3D data, the proposed SSP entirely uses semantic information in the IFC file itself, and thereby provides a better interactive experience for users. 展开更多

Piled embankments, which offer many advantages, are increasingly popular in construction of high-speed railways in China.Although the performance of piled embankment under static loading is well-known,the behavior under the dynamic train load of a high-speed railway is not yet understood. In light of this,a heavily instrumented piled embankment model was set up,and a model test was carried out,in which a servo-hydraulic actuator outputting M-shaped waves was adopted to simulate the process of a running train.Earth pressure, settlement, strain in the geogrid and pile and excess pore water pressure were measured. The results show that the soil arching height under the dynamic train load of a high-speed railway is shorter than under static loading. The growth trend for accumulated settlement slowed down after long-term vibration although there was still a tendency for it to increase.Accumulated geogrid strain has an increasing tendency after long-term vibration. The closer the embankment edge, the greater the geogrid strain over the subsoil.Strains in the pile were smaller under dynamic train loads, and their distribution was different from that under static loading. At the same elevation, excess pore water pressure under the track slab was greater than that under the embankment shoulder. 展开更多

In this work, molecular dynamics modeling was conducted to study hydrogen(H)-induced plastic deformation and cracking of polycrystalα-Fe.Under cyclic loading, the number of vacancies and the stress intensity increase with H atom concentration and the number of loading cycles. However, the effect of cyclic loading on cracking is not as significant as the increment of H concentration. As the H concentration increases, the dislocation generation and emission are enhanced in the{110}<111>slip system, but are inhibited in other slip systems. There is a critical H atom concentration, below which the plastic deformation ofα-Fe is facilitated by H atoms. When the critical H concentration is exceeded, the dislocation emission is inhibited by H atoms at grain boundaries, where the H atoms can pin dislocations, causing piling-up of the dislocations to generate a stress concentration. 展开更多

Recent industrial explosions globally have intensified the focus in mechanical engineering on designing infras-tructure systems and networks capable of withstanding blast loading.Initially centered on high-profile facilities such as embassies and petrochemical plants, this concern now extends to a wider array of infrastructures and facilities.Engineers and scholars increasingly prioritize structural safety against explosions, particularly to prevent disproportionate collapse and damage to nearby structures.Urbanization has further amplified the reliance on oil and gas pipelines, making them vital for urban life and prime targets for terrorist activities.Consequently, there is a growing imperative for computational engineering solutions to tackle blast loading on pipelines and mitigate associated risks to avert disasters. In this study,an empty pipe model was successfully validated under contact blast conditions using Abaqus software,a powerful tool in mechanical engineering for simulating blast effects on buried pipelines.Employing a Eulerian-Lagrangian computational fluid dynamics approach, the investigation extended to above-surface and below-surface blasts at standoff distances of 25 and 50 mm.Material descriptions in the numerical model relied on Abaqus’default mechanical models.Comparative analysis revealed varying pipe performance, with deformation decreasing as explosion-to-pipe distance increased. The explosion’s location relative to the pipe surface notably influenced deformation levels,a key finding highlighted in the study. Moreover, quantitative findings indicated varying ratios of plastic dissipation energy(PDE)for different blast scenarios compared to the contact blast(P0).Specifically,P1(25 mm subsurface blast)and P2(50 mm subsurface blast)showed approximately 24.07%and 14.77%of P0’s PDE,respectively, while P3(25 mm above-surface blast)and P4(50 mm above-surface blast)exhibited lower PDE values, accounting for about 18.08%and 9.67%of P0’s PDE,respectively.Utilising energy-absorbing materials such as thin coatings of ultra-high-strength concrete, metallic foams, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer wraps, and others on the pipeline to effectively mitigate blast damage is recommended. This research contributes to the advancement of mechanical engineering by providing insights and solutions crucial for enhancing the resilience and safety of underground pipelines in the face of blast events. 展开更多

High-speed railway bridges are subjected to normative limitations concerning maximum permissible deck accelerations. For the design of these structures, the European norm EN 1991-2 introduces the high-speed load model(HSLM)—a set of point loads intended to include the effects of existing high-speed trains.Yet,the evolution of current trains and the recent development of new load models motivate a discussion regarding the limits of validity of the HSLM.For this study,a large number of randomly generated load models of articulated, conventional, and regular trains are tested and compared with the envelope of HSLM effects. For each type of train, two sets of 100,000 load models are considered:one abiding by the limits of the EN 1991-2 and another considering wider limits. This comparison is achieved using both a bridge-independent metric(train signatures)and dynamic analyses on a case study bridge(the Canelas bridge of the Portuguese Railway Network). For the latter,a methodology to decrease the computational cost of moving loads analysis is introduced. Results show that some theoretical load models constructed within the stipulated limits of the norm can lead to effects not covered by the HSLM.This is especially noted in conventional trains, where there is a relation with larger distances between centres of adjacent vehicle bogies. 展开更多

Since programing complex and dynamic heat source model for welding simulation is a complex job,the parametric methods are studied in this paper.Firstly,an overall flow to achieve automatically modeling welding was introduced.Secondly,an expert module rule for selecting welding heat source model was founded, which is based on simulation knowledge and experiences.Thirdly,a modularity routine method was investigated using writing with C++programing, which automatically creates subroutines of 3D dynamic heat source model for user.To realize the dynamic weld path, the local weld path coordinate system was moved in the global coordinate system and it is used to model the direction of weld gun, welding path and welding pose. The weld path data file was prepared by the automatic tool for the welding heat source subroutines. All above functions were integrated in the user interface and the connection with architecture was introduced. At last,a laser beam welding heat source modeling was automatically modeled and the weld pool geometry was compared with the reported literature. It demonstrated that the automated tool is valid for welding simulation.Since modeling became convenient for welding simulation using the tool proposed,it could be easy and useful for welding engineers to acquire the needed information. 展开更多

We present a study on the dynamic stability of porous functionally graded(PFG)beams under hygro-thermal loading. The variations of the properties of the beams across the beam thicknesses are described by the power-law model.Unlike most studies on this topic,we consider both the bending deformation of the beams and the hygro-thermal load as size-dependent,simultaneously,by adopting the equivalent differential forms of the well-posed nonlocal strain gradient integral theory(NSGIT)which are strictly equipped with a set of constitutive boundary conditions(CBCs),and through which both the stiffness-hardening and stiffness-softening effects of the structures can be observed with the length-scale parameters changed. All the variables presented in the differential problem formulation are discretized. The numerical solution of the dynamic instability region(DIR)of various bounded beams is then developed via the generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM).After verifying the present formulation and results,we examine the effects of different parameters such as the nonlocal/gradient length-scale parameters, the static force factor, the functionally graded(FG)parameter, and the porosity parameter on the DIR.Furthermore, the influence of considering the size-dependent hygro-thermal load is also presented. 展开更多

This paper presents a new 3D mesoscopic model of ultra-high performance cement-based composite(UHPCC)to investigate its dynamic tensile behavior. In this model, the UHPCC is regarded as a two-phase material composed of cementitious matrix and randomly distributed fibers. The model is established using the commercial software LS-DYNA and involves generating the randomly distributed fiber elements with considerations of diameter, length, orientation and volume fraction, and then fully constraining them with the matrix. In particular,to capture the slipping effect between fibers and matrix that has a strong influence on the dynamic tensile behavior, the fibers are modelled by a fictitious material represented by the load-slip relation. The strain-rate effect of slipping force neglected in most of previous studies is considered by calibrating constitutive parameters of the fictitious material under different strain-rates based on the single fiber pullout tests. Finally, the 3D mesoscopic model is validated against three sets of tension-dominated experiments covered a wide range of loading intensity.Numerical predictions demonstrate that strain-rate effect of slipping force must be considered, and the neglect of it may lead to a great underestimation of the dynamic tensile strength of UHPCC material and would unavoidably underestimate the blast resistance of UHPCC components. 展开更多

Fullerenes are selected as indenters. Our results show that Young's modulus of monolayer-thick graphyne is almost half of that of graphene, which is estimated to be 0.50 TPa. The mechanical properties of graphene and graphyne are different in the presence of strain. A pre-tension has an important effect on the mechanical properties of a membrane. Both the pre-tension and Young's modulus plots demonstrate index behavior. The toughness of graphyne is stronger than that of graphene due to Young's modulus magnitude. Young's moduli of graphene and graphyne are almost independent of the size ratio of indenter to membrane. 展开更多
