An analytical method is proposed with the “stiffness gradient of the response” as a sensitivity metric, and the relationships between the vibration responses and stiffness changes are established. First, a 2-degree-of-freedom (DOF) system is used as an example to propose a stiffness gradient-based evaluation method, taking the effective control bandwidth ratio as a metric of effectiveness. The results show that there is an optimal mass ratio in both variable mass and variable stiffness cases. Then, a typical 16-DOF system is used to investigate the frequency domain characteristics of the stiffness gradient values in the complex system. The distributions of stiffness gradient values show multiple peak intervals corresponding to the sensitive regions for vibration control. By assigning random mass parameters, a significant exponential decay relationship between the subsystem’s mass and effective control is identified, emphasizing the importance of the optimal mass ratio. The finite-element simulation results of solid plate models with springs and oscillators further validate the theoretical results. In short, the gradient value of stiffness effectively quantifies the effects of subsystems on vibration control, providing an analytical tool for active control in complex systems. The identified exponential decay relationship offers meaningful guidance for implementation strategies. 展开更多

In this work, we developed a simple method to fabricate a thickness-based continuous stiffness gradient for biological studies. It was made by glass slides, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pre-polymer, spacer and clips only, without any sophisticated equipment. It is easy to fabricate in any general biological and pharmaceutical laboratories. The stiffness gradient was characterized in terms of apparent Young's modulus by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the Young's modulus along the gradient was found to be 8.5- 120 kPa, which is within the physiological relevant range. HeLa-C3 ceils were cultured on the gradient to study their morphological behavior according to the substrate stiffness. Furthermore, the drug efficiency of etoposide, an anti-cancer drug, was studied along the substrate stiffness gradient. It was found that HeLa-C3 cells cultured on the soft region of the gradient (8.5-11 kPa) are more sensitive to etoposide. We believe the proposed device could promote cell investigations and drug screenings on a substrate with comparable stiffness to the native tissue. 展开更多

A gradient metamaterial with varying-stiffness local resonators is proposed to open the multiple bandgaps and further form a broad fusion bandgap.First, three local resonators with linearly increasing stiffness are periodically attached to the spring-mass chain to construct the gradient metamaterial. The dispersion relation is then derived based on Bloch's theorem to reveal the fusion bandgap theoretically. The dynamic characteristic of the finite spring-mass chain is investigated to validate the fusion of multiple bandgaps. Finally, the effects of the design parameters on multiple bandgaps are discussed. The results show that the metamaterial with a non-uniform stiffness gradient pattern is capable of opening a broad fusion bandgap and effectively attenuating the longitudinal waves within a broad frequency region. 展开更多
