One of the problems with the aerodynamic sound, noise reduction along a railway line is significant engineering issue for further speed-up of a high-speed train. In particular, a pantograph is one of the main aerodynamic noise sources of a high-speed train. As one of the methods for the aerodynamic noise reduction, this study proposes the tapered cylinder by a pantograph. In this paper, the aerodynamic sound and the wake flow of the combinational inclined circular cylinder and tapered cylinder are experimentally and numerically investigated in knuckle upstream and knuckle downstream. Also, we suggest that the surface of grooves such as wood grain interacts with the aerodynamic sound generated from the model. Here, it is considered that the comparison of aerodynamic sound between the model with grooves and without grooves. Consequently, reduction of the maximum aerodynamic sound is possible for the tapered cylinder in the case of knuckle downstream. Furthermore, the noise reduction method is effective that the model surface with grooves such as wood grain.展开更多

The numerical calculations are carfled out for a wide range of wave oscillating frequencies. The corresponding rarefaction parameter is defined as the ratio of sound wave frequency to the intermolecular particle collision frequency. The simulation covers the flow regime from the continuum to free molecule one. The treatment of the os- cillating wall boundary condition and the methods for eval- uating the absorption coefficient and sound wave speed are presented in detail. The simulation results from the UGKS are compared to the Navier-Stokes solutions, the direct sim- ulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) simulation, and experimental measurements. Good agreement with the experimental data has been obtained in the whole flow regimes for the corresponding Knudsen number from 0.08 to 32. The cur- rent study clearly demonstrates the capability of the UGKS method in capturing the sound wave propagation and its usefulness for the rarefied flow study.展开更多

The diffracted sound field from the transition region of an axisymmetric body was calculated by the geometrical theory of diffraction. The diffraction ray between the source point and the receiving point on the surface of an axisymmetric body was calculated by using the dynamic programming method. Based on the diffracted sound field, a simulation scheme for the noise correlation of the conformal array was presented. It was shown that the normalized pressure of the diffracted sound field from the transition region reduced with the increases of the frequency and the curvature of the ray. The flow noises of two models were compared and a rather optimum fore-body geometric shape was given. Furthermore, it was shown that the correlation of the flow noise in the low frequencies was stronger than that in the high frequencies. And the flow noise received by the acoustic array on the curved surface had a stronger correlation than that on the head plane at the designed center frequency, which is important for sonar system design.展开更多

Together, they have successfully carried out the establishment and maintenance of 13 fixed debris flow monitoring stations over the island and 2 mobile debris flow monitoring stations. During July 2004, a powerful southwest air current brought by Mindulle Typhoon caused serious flood in central and southern Taiwan. This paper aims to describe the establishment of debris flow monitoring systems in Taiwan and the observation of the debris flow event during Mindulle Typhoon at Aiyuzi River in Shenmu Village, Nantou County by the monitoring station.展开更多

Lighthill’s and Curle’s acoustic analogies are implemented in the open source computational fluid dynamics framework OpenFOAM. The main objective of this work is to visualize and localize the dominated sound sources and the resulting values of fluctuating pressure values within the computation domain representing the acoustical near field. This is all done on one mesh and during the iterative computation of the transient fluid flow. Finally the flow field and acoustical results of different simulation cases are presented and the properties of the shown method are discussed.展开更多

Non-equilibrium effects, thermal and velocity lag results to the inefficiency of nozzle performance. In the present studies, theoretical analysis and numerical simulations were carried out to investigate particle-gas flows in a C-D nozzle. Homogeneous equilibrium model that no lag in velocity and temperature occurs between particles and gas phase was used to derive mass flow rate and sound speed of multiphase flows. Two-phase flows are regarded as isentropic flows that isentropic relations can be used for homogeneous equilibrium model. Discrete phase model (DPM) where interaction with continuous phase and discrete random walk model were considered was used to calculate particle- gas flows. Particle mass loadings were varied to investigate their effects on choking phenomena of particle-gas flows. Mass flow rate and sound speed of mixture flows were theoretically calculated by homogeneous equilibrium model and compared with numerical results. Shock wave structure and particle number density were also obtained to be different at different particle mass loading and operating pressure conditions.展开更多

The use of this new methodology managed to detect the fracture flow system rupture zones in the underground, also answered the questions about the deferent subsurface water bodies. The present study focuses on Marsaba-Feshcha sub-basin in the northeast of the Dead Sea. Due to the scarcity of boreholes in the study area, several geophysical methods were implanted. The combination of these two methods (VES and NPEMFE) with the field observations and East-West transversal faults with the coordination (624437/242888) was determined, cutting through the anticlines with their mainly impervious cores with fracture length of >400 m. These transversal faults saddle inside Nabi Musa syncline (Boqea syncline), leading to a hydraulic connection between the Lower and the Upper Aquifer. Due to the identified transversal fault, the water of the Upper and Lower Aquifer mixed and emerged as springs at Ein Feshcha group.展开更多

Several methods have been developed for measuring the static flow resistivity acoustically. Most of these methods cannot be implemented directly in the standard tubes which are widely used for measurements of sound absorption coefficients and impedance as defined in ISO 10534.2. The accuracy of the proposed method and the tube is verified through finite element analysis and the feasibility to determine the static flow resistivity is validated through experiments. It is validated that the accuracy of the proposed method is highly dependent on the position of the acoustic center of the measurement microphones and the accuracy can be enhanced by increasing the back cavity depth and/or decreasing the measurement frequency.展开更多
