This paper introduces a novel application of bionic engineering: a bionic musical instrument using Physarum polycephalum. Physarum polycephalum is a huge single cell with thousands of nuclei, which behaves like a giant amoeba. During its foraging behavior this plasmodium produces electrical activity corresponding to different physiological states. We developed a method to render sounds from such electrical activity and thus represent spatio-temporal behavior of slime mould in a form apprehended auditorily. The electrical activity is captured by various electrodes placed on a Petri dish containing the cultured slime mold. Sounds are synthesized by a bank of parallel sinusoidal oscillators connected to the electrodes. Each electrode is responsible for one partial of the spectrum of the resulting sound. The behavior of the slime mould can be controlled to produce different timbres. 展开更多

Heat exchangers have its major application in automobile, air condition, refrigerator, power plants, and many others. Heat transfer characteristics and performance of Copper spiral heat exchanger are investigated and compared with pure water. Nanofluid can enhance thermos-physical properties. Experiment is carried out for water based SiO2 Nanofluid with 15 nm average sized nanoparticle at varying air velocity and mass flow rate of fluid to investigate its effect on heat transfer coefficient. From the experimental data, a closed form solution for Nusselt number has been calculated using ∈-NTU method. A new correlation has been proposed as a function of Reynolds number and Prandtl number. The heat transfer rate, effectiveness, has been significantly higher compared to pure water and with increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles. 展开更多

Electroencephalogram(EEG)provides a window for the activity of the human brain. As a novel form of the brain-computer interface(BCI),the online/offline EEG data may be interpreted through its auditory representation which can be considered as a specific tool in EEG monitoring and analysis. In this work, after a comprehensive comparison of the various designs of brainwave music generations,a waveform event mapping system for music display in real time--the Chengdu Brainwave Music(CBM)is proposed, which is a special on-line BCI system. In CBM,the user datagram protocol(UDP)is adopted to transport EEG data from the recorder to a music generator. The CBM could possibly be used as an audio feedback tool in BCI,or a monitoring tool in clinic EEG,and a subject specified music therapy method. 展开更多

In order to listen to brain activity as a piece of music, we proposed a scale-free brainwave music (SFBM) technology, which translates the scalp EEG into music notes according to the power law of both EEG and music. In this paper, the methodology was further extended to chorus music of two channels from the two hemispheres. Firstly, EEG data from two channels symmetrically located on the left and fight hemispheres are translated into MIDI sequences by SFBM, respectively, where the EEG parameters modulate the pitch, duration and volume of each music note. Then, the two sequences are fiitered into a chorus of the Chinese pentatonic scale or the Western major scale. The resulted Chinese and Western music at different sleep stages illustrate distinct differences in harmony, and the music with Chinese pentatonic scale sounds more harmonious. 展开更多
