Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Dingxi No. 8654) was treated with twoconcentrations of atmospheric CO_2 (350 and 700 μmol mol^(-1)), two levels of soil moisture(well-watered and drought) and five rates of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mgkg^(-1) soil) to study the atmospheric CO_2 concentration effect on dry matter accumulation and Nuptake of spring wheat. The effects of CO_2 enrichment on the shoot and total mass depended largelyon soil nitrogen level, and the shoot and total mass increased significantly in the moderate to highN treatments but did not increase significantly in the low N treatment. Enriched CO_2 concentrationdid not increase more shoot and total mass in the drought treatment than in the well-wateredtreatment. Thus, elevated CO_2 did not ameliorate the depressive effects of drought and nitrogenstress. In addition, root mass decreased slightly and root/shoot ratio decreased significantly dueto CO_2 enrichment in no N treatment under well-watered condition. Enriched CO_2 decreased shoot Ncontent and shoot and total N uptake; but it reduced root N content and uptake slightly. Shootcritical N concentration was lower for spring wheat grown at 700 μmol mol^(-1) CO_2 than at 350μmol mol^(-1) CO_2 in both well-watered and drought treatments. The critical N concentrations were16 and 19 g kg^(-1) for the well-watered treatment and drought treatment at elevated CO_2 and 21 and26 g kg^(-1) at ambient CO_2, respectively. The reductions in the movement of nutrients to theplant roots through mass flow due to the enhancement in WUE (water use efficiency) and the increasein N use efficiency at elevated CO_2 could elucidate the reduction of shoot and root Nconcentrations. 展开更多

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau encompasses a large quantity of wetlands, some of which have been degraded to varying severity levels. In the literature, a number of degradation indicators have been proposed to evaluate ecological health of wetlands, but their effectiveness in the plateau environment remains unknown. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of three degradation indicators, soil moisture content at lo em deep, vegetative cover, and density of pika burrows. The degradation severity of wetlands in Maduo County on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is enumerated at four levels, intact, slight, moderate and severe. Analysis of xo6 samples collected in the field demonstrates that the density of pika burrows is the least reliable indicator. By comparison, vegetative cover and underlying soil moisture content are more reliable, even though neither is a perfect indicator as the difference among adjacent levels of severity as revealed by t-test is not always statistically significant. The imperfection of vegetative cover as an indicator is due to its variation among different types of wetlands. The limitation of moisture content is attributed to its non-linear relationship with wetland degradation. Above the threshold of about 50% in moisture content wetlands are unlikely to be degraded. It is recommended that moisture be measured at the point near the surface and vegetative cover be further differentiated by species in order to improve their effectiveness. 展开更多

Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) data from the dry season during 2010–2012 over the whole Yunnan Province, an improved temperature vegetation dryness index(iTVDI), in which a parabolic dry-edge equation replaces the traditional linear dry-edge equation, was developed, to reveal the regional drought regime in the dry season. After calculating the correlation coefficient, root-mean-square error, and standard deviation between the iTVDI and observed topsoil moisture at 10 and 20 cm for seven sites, the effectiveness of the new index in depicting topsoil moisture conditions was verified. The drought area indicated by iTVDI mapping was then compared with the drought-affected area reported by the local government. The results indicated that the iTVDI can monitor drought more accurately than the traditional TVDI during the dry season in Yunnan Province. Using iTVDI facilitates drought warning and irrigation scheduling, and the expectation is that this new index can be broadly applied in other areas. 展开更多

A simplified physically-based algorithm for surface soil moisture inversion from satellite microwave radiometer data is presented. The algorithm is based on a radiative transfer model, and the assumption that the optical depth of the vegetation is polarization independent. The algorithm combines the effects of vegetation and roughness into a single parameter. Then the microwave polarization difference index (MPDI) is used to eliminate the effects of surface temperature, and to obtain soil moisture, through a nonlinear iterative procedure. To verify the present algorithm, the 6.9 GHz dual-polarized brightness temperature data from the Advanced Micro- wave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) were used. Then the soil moisture values retrieved by the present algorithm were validated by in-situ data from 20 sites in the Tibetan Plateau, and compared with both the NASA AMSR-E soil moisture products, and Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) soil moisture products. The results show that the soil moisture retrieved by the present algorithm agrees better with ground measurements than the two satellite products. The advantage of the algorithm is that it doesn't require field observations of soil moisture, surface roughness, or canopy biophysical data as calibration parameters, and needs only single-frequency brightness temperature observations during the whole retrieval process. 展开更多
