BACKGROUND Low anterior resection syndrome(LARS)is a prevalent and debilitating complication following sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer.Evidence-based interventions for the concurrent psychological burden are limited.Electroacupuncture has been proposed as a potential adjunctive therapy, but its psychological benefits remain inadequately studied.AIM To investigate the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture on emotional recovery and gastrointestinal function in patients with moderate to severe LARS,and to explore its potential advantages in psychologically vulnerable subgroups.METHODS We conducted a retrospective, controlled study involving 100 patients with moderate to severe LARS(LARS score≥21)treated at two tertiary hospitals in China between January 2022 and December 2024.Patients received either standard postoperative care alone(n=50)or in combination with a standardized 4-week electroacupuncture protocol(n=50).Psychological and functional outcomes were assessed using validated instruments including Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS),Body Image Scale(BIS),General Self-Efficacy Scale,Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),LARS score, and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 at four time points. The primary endpoint was emotional remission, defined as a≥3-point reduction in HADS-Anxiety subscale(HADS-A).Analyses included repeated-measures comparisons,Kaplan-Meier survival curves,Cox regression models, and subgroup-interaction testing.RESULTS At baseline, demographic, surgical, and psychosocial characteristics were comparable among groups.By week 4,patients receiving electroacupuncture demonstrated significantly greater reductions in anxiety(HADS-A:4.8±2.6 vs 7.3±3.0;P<0.001),depression,and body-image disturbance(BIS:8.7±3.6 vs 11.9±4.2;P<0.001),alongside enhanced coping capacity(Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced),perceived social support(PSSS),and bowel function(LARS score).Emotional remission-defined as a≥3-point HADS-A reduction-was achieved more rapidly in the electroacupuncture group,as confirmed by Kaplan-Meier analysis(log-rank P<0.001;odds ratio=4.7).Multivariate Cox regression identified higher baseline LARS and BIS scores as independent predictors of delayed emotional recovery.Subgroup analyses revealed significantly amplified treatment benefits in patients with high baseline anxiety(HADS-A≥8),elevated body-image disturbance(BIS≥12),or low perceived social support(PSSS<60),with consistent interaction effects(P for interaction<0.05 across subgroups).CONCLUSION Electroacupuncture may accelerate emotional recovery and improve functional and psychosocial outcomes in patients with LARS.Its integration into postoperative care may offer particular benefits for psychologically vulnerable subgroups. 展开更多

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a key factor in stress adaptation and avoidance of a social stress behavioral response.Recent studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in stressed mice is brain region–specific, particularly involving the corticolimbic system, including the ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus.Determining how brain-derived neurotrophic factor participates in stress processing in different brain regions will deepen our understanding of social stress psychopathology. In this review,we discuss the expression and regulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in stress-sensitive brain regions closely related to the pathophysiology of depression. We focused on associated molecular pathways and neural circuits, with special attention to the brain-derived neurotrophic factor–tropomyosin receptor kinase B signaling pathway and the ventral tegmental area–nucleus accumbens dopamine circuit. We determined that stress-induced alterations in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels are likely related to the nature, severity, and duration of stress, especially in the above-mentioned brain regions of the corticolimbic system. Therefore,BDNF might be a biological indicator regulating stress-related processes in various brain regions. 展开更多

Background:Weight-related self-stigma(WRSS)is prevalent among individuals with different types of weight status and is associated with a range of negative health outcomes.Social support and coping models explain how individuals may use different coping methods to deal with their mental health needs.Psychological distress(e.g.,depression and stress)could lead to overuse of social media and smartphones. When using social media or smartphones, individuals are likely to be exposed to negative comments regarding weight/shape/size posted on the social media.Consequently, individuals who experience problematic social media use(PSMU)or problematic smartphone use(PSPU)may develop WRSS.Therefore, the present study examined the roles of PSMU and PSPU as mediators in the relationship between psychological distress and WRSS.Methods:Using convenience sampling via an online survey,622 participants with a mean age of 23.70 years(SD=4.33)completed questions assessing sociodemographic variables, psychological distress,PSMU,PSPU,WRSS,and self-reported weight and height. Results:The hierarchical regression models showed that sex(β=0.08,p=0.01),BMI(β=0.39,p<0.001),depression(β=0.21,p=0.001),stress(β=0.18,p=0.01),PSMU(β=0.09,p=0.045),and PSPU(β=0.14,p=0.001)were significant factors for WRSS.Conclusion:The mediation models showed that both PSMU and PSPU were significant mediators in the relationships between depression and stress with WRSS.The present findings provide some evidence for understanding WRSS and has important implications for developing interventions to reduce its negative impact on individuals’health and well-being. 展开更多

The proliferation of robot accounts on social media platforms has posed a significant negative impact, necessitating robust measures to counter network anomalies and safeguard content integrity.Social robot detection has emerged as a pivotal yet intricate task, aimed at mitigating the dissemination of misleading information. While graphbased approaches have attained remarkable performance in this realm, they grapple with a fundamental limitation:the homogeneity assumption in graph convolution allows social robots to stealthily evade detection by mingling with genuine human profiles. To unravel this challenge and thwart the camouflage tactics, this work proposed an innovative social robot detection framework based on enhanced HOmogeneity and Random Forest(HORFBot). At the core of HORFBot lies a homogeneous graph enhancement strategy, intricately woven with edge-removal techniques, tometiculously dissect the graph intomultiple revealing subgraphs.Subsequently, leveraging the power of contrastive learning, the proposed methodology meticulously trains multiple graph convolutional networks, each honed to discern nuances within these tailored subgraphs. The culminating stage involves the fusion of these feature-rich base classifiers, harmoniously aggregating their insights to produce a comprehensive detection outcome.Extensive experiments on three social robot detection datasets have shown that this method effectively improves the accuracy of social robot detection and outperforms comparative methods. 展开更多

Social interaction with peer pressure is widely studied in social network analysis.Game theory can be utilized to model dynamic social interaction, and one class of game network models assumes that people’s decision payoff functions hinge on individual covariates and the choices of their friends. However, peer pressure would be misidentified and induce a non-negligible bias when incomplete covariates are involved in the game model. For this reason,we develop a generalized constant peer effects model based on homogeneity structure in dynamic social networks. The new model can effectively avoid bias through homogeneity pursuit and can be applied to a wider range of scenarios. To estimate peer pressure in the model,we first present two algorithms based on the initialize expand merge method and the polynomial-time twostage method to estimate homogeneity parameters. Then we apply the nested pseudo-likelihood method and obtain consistent estimators of peer pressure.Simulation evaluations show that our proposed methodology can achieve desirable and effective results in terms of the community misclassification rate and parameter estimation error. We also illustrate the advantages of our model in the empirical analysis when compared with a benchmark model. 展开更多

This review explores the use of agent-based modeling(ABM)within the framework of study human emotion and cognition in the context of its ability to simulate complex social interactions, adaptive changes, and evolutionary processes.By representing agents and their defined environments with probabilistic interactions,ABM allows the assessment of the effects of individual behavior at the micro level on the greater social phenomena at the macro level. The review looks into the applications of ABM in portraying some of the key components of emotions and cognition-empathy,cooperation,decision making, and emotional transmission-and analyzes the problems including scalability, empirical validation, and description of sensitive emotional states. The most important conclusion is that merging ABM with information neurobiological data and artificial intelligence(AI)techniques would allow for deepening the interactions within the system and enhancing its responsiveness to stimuli. This review highlights approaches that aim to exploit the ABM methodology more fully and integrates methods from biology, neuroscience, and engineering. This integration could contribute to our understanding of the human behavior evolution and adaptation within systems relevant to policymaking, healthcare, and education. 展开更多
