Background:Platform algorithms driving content presentation are profoundly shaping the experience of younger users.While prior research has examined anxiety stemming from young adults’social media usage,the link betw...Background:Platform algorithms driving content presentation are profoundly shaping the experience of younger users.While prior research has examined anxiety stemming from young adults’social media usage,the link between upward social comparison and anxiety remains unclear.This study aims to investigate the mediating role of upward social comparison in this relationship and determine the moderating role of psychological resilience.Methods:A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 562 young Chinese adults aged 18–35(53%female).Data were collected via an online questionnaire employing validated measurement instruments,including scales for social media usage patterns,upward comparator behaviour(INCOM),anxiety levels(GAD-7),and psychological resilience(RSA).Correlation analysis,mediation analysis,and moderation analysis were conducted using SPSS 29.0.Results:As predicted,the results indicate that upward social comparison mediates the relationship between both active(β=−0.11,95%CI=[−0.15,−0.08])and passive(β=0.11,95%CI=[0.07,0.15])social media use and anxiety.Furthermore,psychological resilience(β_(low)=0.10,95%CI=[0.06,0.14];β_(high)=0.05,95%CI=[0.01,0.09])moderated the indirect effect of passive social media use on anxiety through upward social comparison.Conclusion:The findings indicate that upward social comparison significantly influences the anxiety experienced by young social media users,with psychological resilience playing a crucial moderating role.These results offer valuable insights for optimizing content recommendation algorithms on social media platforms to better support young adults’mental health.展开更多
The paper focused on how social comparison orientation people apply influences their psychological well-being and how self-efficacy plays an important role in buffering some negative influence from upward social compa...The paper focused on how social comparison orientation people apply influences their psychological well-being and how self-efficacy plays an important role in buffering some negative influence from upward social comparison compared with someone better in one domain.In Festinger’s(1954)social comparison theory,the social comparison orientation instructed how people process the information they compared for,and related emotion was induced differently.In this paper,2,000 college students in Boston were proposed to participate in two experiments that discuss how different social comparison orientations affect their perception of life satisfaction.For the hypothetical result,we proposed that a high level of engagement in social comparison and ability-based social comparison was associated with less life satisfaction than the participants who had a low level of social comparison and opinion-based social comparison.In terms of coping strategy,we assumed that a high level of self-efficacy,which is the belief in capability to achieve a certain goal,will buffer the negative impact from upward comparison and improve the life satisfaction of those participants who like to engage with social comparison and ability-based comparison orientation.展开更多
To explore the status of undergraduates’WeChat usage and upward social comparison,and analyze the relationship between the above two variables.Totally 754 WeChat undergraduates were selected through poster recruitmen...To explore the status of undergraduates’WeChat usage and upward social comparison,and analyze the relationship between the above two variables.Totally 754 WeChat undergraduates were selected through poster recruitment from 5 colleges in Guangdong Province.They were investigated with Access Frequency to Social Networking Site Scale(AFSNSS),Upward Social Comparison Subscale of Iowa-Nwtherlands Comparison Orientation Measure(INCOM-USCS).The score of overall emotional engagement(OEE)of AFSNSS and the total standard score of INCOM–USCS(TSSI-U)were(22.41±4.70)and(0±4.5),respectively.The correlation between WeChat frequency and TSSI-U was not significant.TSSI-U was significantly positively correlated with the score of OEE and other items of AFSNSS(r=0.161~0.413,P<0.01).Multiple linear regression analysis showed that The scores of item 1,7and 8 of AFSNSS,as well as family economic status,grade ranking of academic performance(GRAP)and the purpose of WeChat use were postively correlated with TSSI-U(β=.104~.234,P<.05).Class cadre or not and origin were negatively correlated with TSSI-U(β=-.089,-.130,P<.05).Conclusion:It suggests that WeChat usage may be a related factor for undergraduates’upward social comparison.展开更多
Within an object-interdependent context,we conducted three experiments to investigate the influence of social comparisons on cooperative behavior,as well as to assess the mediating and moderating effects of related va...Within an object-interdependent context,we conducted three experiments to investigate the influence of social comparisons on cooperative behavior,as well as to assess the mediating and moderating effects of related variables.In Experiment 1(n=207),we examined whether social comparisons impact cooperative behavior toward a comparator in a dictator game task.Here,we specifically focused on the mediating effects of evaluation of others’competence,along with three other potential mediators:self-competence evaluation,positive emotions,and negative emotions.Following the insights gained from Experiment 1,we proceeded to Experiments 2(n=279)and 3(n=298)to further explore whether social distance moderates the mediating effect of evaluation of others’competence.The results of all three experiments consistently indicated that upward(vs.non-)comparison facilitated cooperative behavior,whereas downward(vs.non-)comparison hindered it.Furthermore,our findings revealed that evaluation of others’competence served as a mediator between social comparison and cooperative behavior when the comparator(i.e.,the cooperative partner)was perceived as being at a far-distance,whereas the mediating effect of evaluation of others’competence disappeared when social distance was close.These results reveal the pivotal role of evaluating others’competence and social distance in social interactions from the perspective of social comparison,which provides insights into how to promote cooperative behavior.展开更多
Background:Social media plays an important role in shaping body image and self-perception,particularly among appearance-sensitive groups such as athletes.Although problematic social media use has been linked to body i...Background:Social media plays an important role in shaping body image and self-perception,particularly among appearance-sensitive groups such as athletes.Although problematic social media use has been linked to body image outcomes through processes such as social comparison,self-presentation,and evaluation sensitivity,these mechanisms remain underexplored among athletes with physical disabilities.This study aimed to examine the associations between social media use,addictive use patterns,and body image perception in this population,with a focus on these underlying psychological mechanisms.Methods:A total of 165 athletes with physical disability participated in this quantitative cross-sectional study.Data were collected through online surveys,including demographic questions,the Athlete Social Media Use Scale(content creation,usage frequency,and social media addiction subdimensions),and the Body Image Scale(negative perception,evaluation sensitivity,positive perception,and body modification).Parametric tests,correlation analyses,and group comparisons were performed to assess relationships between social media behaviors and body image dimensions.Results:Problematic social media use was moderately associated with higher negative body image and lower positive body image among athletes with physical disabilities(r=0.32–0.41,all p<0.001).Regression analysis indicated that overall social media use was a significant predictor of body image perception after controlling for demographic variables(β≈0.45,p<0.001),explaining approximately 19.5%of the variance.Mediation analyses using bootstrapping revealed that these psychological mechanisms partially mediated the relationship between problematic social media use and body image perceptions,with small-to-moderate indirect effects,indicating both statistical and practical significance.Conclusion:The findings indicate that not only general social media use but also addictive and problematic usage patterns are linked to vulnerable aspects of body image among athletes with physical disabilities.Increased exposure to idealized digital representations and upward social comparison processes may heighten sensitivity to external evaluation and undermine positive body perception.These results highlight the need for digital literacy initiatives,psychoeducational interventions,and supportive online environments that promote healthier social media engagement and body image among disabled athletes.展开更多

To explore the relationship between social influence,social comparison,clarity of self-concept,and psychological anxiety among young women during their usage of social networking sites,our study selected 338 young wom...To explore the relationship between social influence,social comparison,clarity of self-concept,and psychological anxiety among young women during their usage of social networking sites,our study selected 338 young women aged 14-34 from the social site platforms of Little Red Book and Weibo for questionnaire surveys.The Passive Social Network Utilization Scale,Social Comparison Scale(SCS),Social Influence Questionnaire,Self-Concept Clarity Scale(SCCS),and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale(GAD-7)were employed to measure the subjects.Our results show that the frequency of passive social media use is positively related to the level of psychological anxiety.Social comparison,social influence,and unclear self-concepts under social media use are negatively predictive of psychological anxiety.The chain mediation effects indicate that social comparison and social influence under social media use negatively predict the clarity of self-concept,thus having a negative impact on the psychological health of young women.Therefore,young women should strengthen their self-concepts,control their frequency of social media usage,avoid addiction,and pay special attention to their frequency of passive use,in order to protect their psychological health.Our study provides some practical implications and insights regarding the relationship between young women’s social media use and psychological health.展开更多
