Gibbons in China represent the northernmost margin of present day gibbon species distribution (around N25°). Compared to tropical habitats, northern gibbon habitats are characterized by low temperatures and remarkable seasonal variation in fruit abundance How gibbons adapt to their cold and seasonal habitats and what ecological factors affect their sociality are key questions for understanding their ecology and social system evolution, the elucidation of which will contribute to the conservation of these special populations/species. According to preliminary short-term studies, northern gibbons consume more leaves and use larger home ranges than tropical gibbons. Interestingly, some Nomascus groups consist of more than one adult female. However, these preliminary results are not well understood or incorporated into current socio-ecological theories regarding gibbon species. To better understand northern gibbons, our team has systematically studied three habituated groups of Nomascus concolor, three groups of N. nasutus, and two habituated groups of Hoolock tianxing since 2002. In this paper, we stress the challenges facing gibbons living in northern habitats and summarize their behavioral adaptations to their harsh environments. We also describe the northern gibbon social system and discuss the potential relationships between their ecology and sociality. Finally, we highlight future research questions related to northern gibbons in China. 展开更多

Two artificial agents(a humanoid robot and a virtual human) are enriched with various similar intelligence, autonomy, functionalities and interaction modalities. The agents are integrated in the form of a cyber-physical-social system(CPSS) through a shared communication platform to create a social ecology. In the ecology, the agents collaborate(assist each other) to perform a real-world task(search for a hidden object)for the benefits of humans. A robot-virtual human bilateral trust model is derived and a real-time trust measurement method is developed. The role of taking initiative in the collaboration is switched between the agents following a finite state machine model triggered by bilateral trust, which results in a mixedinitiative collaboration. A scheme is developed to evaluate the performance of the agents in the ecology through the CPSS.The results show that the robot and the virtual human perform satisfactorily in the collaboration through the CPSS. The results thus prove the effectiveness of the real-world ecology between artificial agents of heterogeneous realities through a shared platform based on trust-triggered mixed-initiatives. The results can help develop adaptive social ecology comprising intelligent agents of heterogeneous realities to assist humans in various tasks through collaboration between the agents in the form of a CPSS. 展开更多

Social epigenomics is a new field of research that studies how the social environment shapes the epigenome and how in turn the epigenome modulates behavior. We focus on describing known gene-environment interactions(GEIs)and epigenetic mechanisms in different mammalian social systems. To illustrate how epigenetic mechanisms integrate GEIs,we highlight examples where epigenetic mechanisms are associated with social behaviors and with their maintenance through neuroendocrine, locomotor, and metabolic responses. We discuss future research trajectories and open questions for the emerging field of social epigenomics in nonmodel and naturally occurring social systems. Finally,we outline the technological advances that aid the study of epigenetic mechanisms in the establishment of GEIs and vice versa. 展开更多

Mobile networks possess significant information and thus are considered a gold mine for the researcher’s community. The call detail records(CDR)of a mobile network are used to identify the network’s efficacy and the mobile user’s behavior. It is evident from the recent literature that cyber-physical systems(CPS)were used in the analytics and modeling of telecom data.In addition,CPS is used to provide valuable services in smart cities. In general,a typical telecom company hasmillions of subscribers and thus generatesmassive amounts of data. From this aspect, data storage, analysis, and processing are the key concerns. To solve these issues, herein we propose a multilevel cyber-physical social system(CPSS)for the analysis and modeling of large internet data. Our proposed multilevel system has three levels and each level has a specific functionality.Initially, raw Call Detail Data(CDR)was collected at the first level.Herein, the data preprocessing, cleaning, and error removal operations were performed. In the second level, data processing, cleaning, reduction, integration, processing, and storage were performed.Herein, suggested internet activity record measures were applied. Our proposed system initially constructs a graph and then performs network analysis. Thus proposed CPSS system accurately identifies different areas of internet peak usage in a city(Milan city). Our research is helpful for the network operators to plan effective network configuration, management, and optimization of resources. 展开更多

The paper describes the use of invented, developed, and tested in different countries of the high-level spatial grasp model and technology capable of solving important problems in large social systems, which may be represented as dynamic,self-evolving and distributed social networks. The approach allows us to find important solutions on a holistic level by spatial navigation and parallel pattern matching of social networks with active self-propagating scenarios represented in a special recursive language. This approach effectively hides inside the distributed and networked language implementation traditional system management routines, often providing hundreds of times shorter and simpler high-level solution code. The paper highlights the demands to efficient simulation of social systems, briefs the technology used, and provides some programming examples for solutions of practical problems. 展开更多

A cyber-physical system (CPS) is composed of a physical system and its corresponding cyber systems that are tightly fused at all scales and levels. CPS is helpful to improve the controllability, efficiency and reliability of a physical system, such as vehicle collision avoidance and zero-net energy buildings systems. It has become a hot R&D and practical area from US to EU and other countries. In fact, most of physical systems and their cyber systems are designed, built and used by human beings in the social and natural environments. So, social systems must be of the same importance as their CPSs. The indivisible cyber, physical and social parts constitute the cyber-physical-social system (CPSS), a typical complex system and it's a challengeable problem to control and manage it under traditional theories and methods. An artificial systems, computational experiments and parallel execution (ACP) methodology is introduced based on which data-driven models are applied to social system. Artificial systems, i.e., cyber systems, are applied for the equivalent description of physical-social system (PSS). Computational experiments are applied for control plan validation. And parallel execution finally realizes the stepwise control and management of CPSS. Finally, a CPSS-based intelligent transportation system (ITS) is discussed as a case study, and its architecture, three parts, and application are described in detail. © 2014 Chinese Association of Automation. 展开更多

There is a gap between the properties of social reality and the natural properties of the material bearer that carries it.Language constructivism uses language representations to bridge this gap, arguing that language constructs social reality.Emergence theory holds that the attributes of social reality cannot be reduced to the physical attributes of the carrier. This process is emergent.Language constructivism regards the process from mental reality to social reality as the product of language’s own operation and the secret is hidden in language itself.Emergentism directly led social reality to mysticism.Mental reality is an initial existence, which includes both innate desires and needs and acquired values.Social reality is the external reality created by the subject through action according to his internal needs and desires.Mental reality and social reality are dynamically integrated into each other, which is achieved through rule-based action. 展开更多

Currently, various rapidly developing information technologies are gradually transforming traditional social systems into Complex Social Systems(CSS).On the one hand, individuals'ability to make decisions and access information is increasing, making their behaviors more unpredictable. On the other hand, technology is facilitating an increase in the intensity and scope of individual interactions, with cascade effects making the outcomes of interactions difficult to estimate. To improve the performance of CSS,it is essential to examine the causal laws that determine what kind of performance the system exhibits. However, researches on the causal laws of CSS remain scarce, leading to the lack of foundations for analyzing such systems.Inspired by computational experiments and causal analysis, this paper proposes a Hierarchical Causal Model(HCM)with three layers, each of which presents, extracts, and applies the causality. We apply the proposed model to enhance the system performance in a typical CSS,a software-enabled small-scale plant.Experimental results show that 98.38%of the working days have better system performance than the actual performance after applying our proposed model, and the mean of the median improvement reaches 41.38%.These results validate the proposed model, demonstrating that this work provides a feasible method for the analysis of CSS. 展开更多

The construction of“park cities”requires a systematic thinking to coordinate the networked development of park system and break through the limitation of emphasizing scale and grade and neglecting dynamic correlation in traditional planning.Taking Haidian District of Beijing as an example, the social network analysis method is introduced to construct the network model of park green spaces.Through indicators such as clustering coefficient, network density and node centrality, the characteristics of its spatial structure and hierarchical relationship are analyzed. It is found that the network integrity presents the characteristics of“highly local concentration and global fragmentation”,fragmented park green space network and missing spatial connection, isolated clusters and collaborative failure,as well as the spatial mismatch between population and resource supply and demand.Hierarchical issues include“structural imbalance and functional disorder”,disorder between network hierarchy and park level, misalignment of functional hierarchy leading to weakened network risk resistance capacity, and a relatively dense distribution of core nodes, etc. In response to the above problems,a multi-level spatial intervention strategy should be adopted to solve the overall problem of the network.Meanwhile,it is needed to clarify the positioning of a park itself and improve the hierarchical system,so as to construct a multi-level and multi-scale park green space network, contribute to the construction of a park city, and provide residents with more diverse activity venues. 展开更多

Objectives:Recently, the global esports industry has experienced remarkable growth, leading to an expansion in the scale and influence of professional player communities. However, despite this outward growth, systems to protect players’mental health remain inadequate.Comprehensive analysis of structural risk factors, including performance pressure, public evaluation, and career instability, remains insufficient. This study, aimed to explore stressors encountered by esports athletes, coping strategies, and the role of social support systems in safeguarding mental health.Using the transactional model of stress and coping, the job demands–resources model, and social support theory, the study adopts an integrated perspective to examine challenges faced by athletes in the competitive esports environment. Methods:A qualitative case study was conducted involving in-depth interviews and nonparticipant observations with 11 esports athletes who competed at national or international levels,as well as two team managers.Thematic analysis identified recurring patterns in the data, and credibility was ensured through triangulation and cross-review among researchers. Results:Esports athletes experience multiple interacting stressors, including performance demands, emotional strain duringmatches, and continuous evaluation on socialmedia. In response, they employed coping strategies—problem-focused,emotion-focused,and avoidance-based,which provided temporary relief but often led to burnout and self-regulation failure owing to absence of support systems.Social support networks had ambivalent effects:while offering comfort, they also intensified pressure through negative feedback and high expectations from fans and online communities. Conclusion:The findings show that mental health issues among esports athletes are not only related to individual factors but are closely linked to performance-driven structures, competitive environments, and social relationships. This study integrates the transactional model of stress and coping, the JobDemands–Resourcesmodel, and social support theoryto provide comprehensive analysis. It also offers practical recommendations, including psychological counseling, emotional labor programs, and improved communication with families and fan communities. 展开更多
