Plum blossom pile is a new type of special-shaped pile, which is proposed based on the principle of maximum perimeter with the same cross-sectional area. To advance this technique, primarily for the design of plum blossom piles, it is important to investigate the skin friction behavior of plum blossom pile foundations precluding any straightforward constitutive model. In this work, an analytic method dependent on the cross-sectional geometry and the vertical shearing effects is proposed by means of equilibrium analysis to calculate the effective vertical stress in the surrounding soil, the skin friction/negative skin friction, and the axial force/dragload of a plum blossom pile. Additionally, the curves of skin friction of piles are investigated with the same conditions. The results show that the curves of skin friction of piles deduced according to the developed analytic method agree well with the FEM results and related literature solution, which validates the solution. The axial force of the pile decreases with the increase of the shear action coefficient in the buried depth direction under the vertical concentrated load when considering the vertical shearing effects on the pile-soil interfaces. 展开更多

The methodology of predicting pile shaft skin ultimate friction has been studied in a systematic way. In the light of that, the analysis of the pile shaft resistance for bored and cast in situ piles in cohesive soils was carried out thoroughly in the basis of field performance data of 10 fully instrumented large diameter bored piles (LDBPs) used as the bridge foundation. The undrained strength index μ in term of cohesive soils was brought forward in allusion to the cohesive soils in the consistence plastic state, and can effectively combine the friction angle and the cohesion of cohesive soils in undrained condition. And that the classical ' α method' was modified much in effect to predict the pile shaft skin friction of LDBPs in cohesive soils. Furthermore, the approach of standard penetration test (SPT) N value used to estimate the pile shaft skin ultimate friction was analyzed, and the calculating formulae were established for LDBPs in clay and silt clay respectively. 展开更多

Conventional non-smooth structures include riblets and dimples. Inspired by sand dunes, a novel variable ovoid non-smooth structure is proposed in this study. The body of the variable ovoid dimple was designed based on three size parameters, the radius, semimajor, and depth, and a 3D model was created based on UG software. The constructed variable dimples were placed in a rectangular array on the bottom of a square tube model. Following ANSYS meshing, the grid model was imported into FLUENT, where the flow characteristics were calculated. Results of skin friction reduction were achieved and the effect of the design parameters on different variable ovoid dimples was obtained by orthogonal testing. Various aspects of the skin friction reduction mechanism were discussed including the distribution of velocity vectors, variation in boundary layer thickness, and pressure distribution. 展开更多

A simplified approach was proposed to analyze the negative skin friction calculation of special-shaped pile considering pile-soil interaction under surcharge. Based on the concentric cylinder shearing theory, considering the changes of pile shape(such as, taper angle and diameters of pile base, etc.), the load-transfer of special-shaped pile was built. The accuracy of the developed simplified approach was verified by numerical simulation model with the same condition. Then, the influence factors, such as, taper angles, the diameter of pile base, surcharge, and pile-soil interface parameters were analyzed and discussed. The results show that the developed simplified approach can calculate NSF of special-shaped pile under surcharge effectively. A limited parametric study indicates that in many practical situations special-shaped piles(such as belled wedge pile shown in this work) offer a design option that is more economical than traditional uniform cross-section piles. 展开更多

In this paper,we derive mathematical formulas for the skin friction coefficient in wall-bounded turbulence based on the Reynolds averaged streamwise momentum equation and the total stress.Specifically, with a theoretical or empirical relation of the total stress, the skin friction coefficient is expressed in terms of the mean velocity and the Reynolds shear stress in an arbitrary wall-normal region[h〇,h\].The formulas are validated using direct numerical simulation data of turbulent channel and boundary layer flows, and the results show that our formulas estimate the skin friction coefficient very accurately with an error less than 2%.The present integral formula can be used to determine the skin friction in turbulent channel and boundary layer flows at high Reynolds numbers where the near-wall statistics are very difficult to measure accurately. 展开更多

The steady laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a micropolar fluid near the stagnation point on a stretched vertical surface with prescribed skin friction were considered. The governing partial differential equations were transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, which were then solved numerically using the shooting method. Results for the stretching velocity, the local Nusselt number, the temperature, and the velocity profiles are presented for various values of the mixed convection parameter λ and material parameter K when the Prandtl number is equal to 1.Both assisting(heated plate) and opposing(cooled plate) flow regions are considered. It is found that dual solutions exist for both assisting and opposing flows. 展开更多

Interaction between turbulence and particles is investigated in a channel flow. The fluid motion is calculated using direct numerical simulation(DNS) with a lattice Boltzmann(LB) method, and particles are tracked in a Lagrangian framework through the action of force imposed by the fluid. The particle diameter is smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale, and the point force is used to represent the feedback force of particles on the turbulence. The effects of particles on the turbulence and skin friction coefficient are examined with different particle inertias and mass loadings. Inertial particles suppress intensities of the spanwise and wall-normal components of velocity, and the Reynolds shear stress. It is also found that, relative to the reference particle-free flow, the overall mean skin-friction coefficient is reduced by particles. Changes of near wall turbulent structures such as longer and more regular streamwise low-speed streaks and less ejections and sweeps are the manifestation of drag reduction. 展开更多

The evolution characteristics of the mean skin friction beneath the supersonic turbulent boundary layer that interacts with incident shock waves at Mach 2.25 are analyzed using Direct Numerical Simulation(DNS). The separated and attached boundary layers in the interaction region that respectively correspond to 33.2° and 28° incident shock angles are considered. The mean skin friction recovery rate for the separated boundary layer is much gentler and distinctly less than that for the attached case where the skin friction completes its recovery within one boundary layer thickness. The novel mean skin friction decomposition method for compressible flows proposed by the recent research is applied in the interaction region to investigate the internal evolution characteristics quantitatively. The results reveal that the three decomposition components are distinctly unequal between the two cases. The contributions of the turbulent motions at different scales to the associated term are focused on using empirical mode decomposition technology. It indicates that the outer large-scale structures dominate separation and reattachment regions, while contributions from inner small-scale structures are limited. In contrast, contributions from the outer largescale structures are dramatically reduced in the attached case, which results in the outer large-scale and inner small-scale motions being of equal importance. 展开更多

As the Reynolds number increases, the skin friction has been identified as the dominant drag in many practical applications. In the present paper, the effects of the Reynolds number on the mean skin friction decomposition in turbulent channel flows up to Reτ= 5 200 are investigated based on two different methods, i.e., the FukagataIwamoto-Kasagi(FIK) identity(FUKAGATA, K., IWAMOTO, K., and KASAGI, N.Contribution of Reynolds stress distribution to the skin friction in wall-bounded flows.Physics of Fluids, 14(11), L73–L76(2002)) and the Renard-Deck(RD) identity(DECK,S., RENARD, N., LARAUFIE, R., and WEISS, P.′E. Large-scale contribution to mean wall shear stress in high-Reynolds-number flat-plate boundary layers up to Reθ= 13 650.Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 743, 202–248(2014)). The direct numerical simulation(DNS) data provided by Lee and Moser(LEE, M. and MOSER, R. D. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow up to Reτ≈ 5 200. Journal of Fluid Mechanics,774, 395–415(2015)) are used. For these two skin friction decomposition methods, their decomposed constituents are discussed and compared for different Reynolds numbers. The integrands of the decomposed constituents are locally analyzed across the boundary layer to assess the actions associated with the inhomogeneity and multi-scale nature of turbulent motion. The scaling of the decomposed constituents and their integrands are presented. In addition, the boundary layer is divided into three sub-regions to evaluate the contributive proportion of each sub-region with an increase in the Reynolds number. 展开更多

The effects on the local skin friction of smooth flat plate by formation of air cavity are investigated experimentally, under the conditions of several variations of air injection angle, pore size, porous surface area and transverse step. The experimental results show that local skin friction of downstream of the porous section could be reduced at extent ranging from 50% to 90%,by injection air through pore or slot, with free stream velocities from 2 to 6 m/s.The pore size and area of air injection surface have small effect on skin friction reduction, step has significant effect on skin friction reduction. The mechanism of the skin friction reduction is due to the formation of air cavity, mixed with air and water, between the flat plate and its water boundary layer. 展开更多

This study proposes a quantitative evaluation framework to assess the performance of boundary layer injection(BLI)technology, establishing standardized metrics for integration into performance analysis of scramjets. We comparatively evaluate inert gas and fuel BLI strategies under typical combustor inflow conditions through systematic numerical investigations employing this evaluation framework.Key findings reveal that fuel injection demonstrates superior skin friction reduction efficacy compared to inert gases, especially hydrogen, achieving skin friction reduction performance up to 600 s at Mach 8+conditions with an injection equivalence ratio(ER)of 0.1.Hydrogen’s advantage arises from its inherently low density, coupled with combustion-induced density reduction in the log-law region. This dual mechanism suppresses turbulent momentum transport and attenuates skin friction through large-scale flow restructuring. However, when benchmarked against reacting mainstream flows without BLI,fuel injection efficacy diminishes significantly(100 s level)—local density reduction effects induced by boundary layer combustion are attenuated by mainstream heat release, limiting further momentum transport suppression and reducing drag reduction performance to inert gas levels. These results underscore the critical influence of ambient combustion conditions on BLI effectiveness, emphasizing that BLI implementation must prioritize non-reacting or weakly reacting flow environments. The proposed standardized metrics address this operational dependency, enabling BLI optimization within full-engine design paradigms to prevent counterproductive“pseudo-optimization.” 展开更多

The present work deals with accurately estimating wall-skin friction from near-wall mean velocity by means of PIV measurement. The estimation accuracy relies on the spatial resolution and the precision of the resolved velocity profile inside the viscous sublayer, which is a big challenge for conventional window-based correlation method(K?hler C J,et al.Exp Fluids,2012,52:1641–1656).With the help of single-pixel ensemble correlation, the ensemble-averaged velocity vector can be resolved at significant spatial resolution, thus improving the measurement accuracy. To demonstrate the feasibility of this single-pixel ensemble correlation method,we first study the velocity estimation precision in a case of steady near-wall flow.Synthetic particle images are used to investigate the effect of different image parameters. It is found that the velocity RMS-uncertainty level of the single-pixel ensemble correlation method can be equivalent to the conventional window correlation method once the effective particle number used for the ensemble correlation is large enough.Furthermore,a canonical turbulent boundary layer is synthetically simulated based on velocity statistics resolved by previous Direct Numerical Simulation(DNS)work(Schlatter P,et al.J Fluid Mech,2010,659:116–126).The relative error of wall skin friction coefficient is shown to be one-order smaller than that of the window correlation method. And the optimization strategy to further minimize the measurement uncertainty is discussed in the last part. 展开更多

A description and results of tests of a new small-scale gage for direct measurement of skin friction force are presented in the paper. The gage design provides separated measurement of longitudinal and transversal component of friction force.Application of this scheme provides high sensitivity and necessary high-frequency response of the gage. The tests of the gage were carried out in a blow down wind tunnel at Mach numbers of 2 and 4 within the range of Reynolds numbers Rex from 0.8 to 5 million and in the hot-shot wind tunnel at Mach number 6 and Reynolds numbers Rex=2.5-10 million. The measurements of skin friction were carried out on a flat plate and on a ramp beyond the shock wave.Simultaneously with the direct measurement of friction in the blow down wind tunnel, the measurements of profiles of average velocities and mass flow rate pulsations were realised.Analysis of measurement errors has shown that the friction gage permits to measure skin friction coefficient on a flat plate with mistake not more than 10%. 展开更多

This paper describes a theoretical method for reconstruction of the skin friction topology in complex separated flows, which is developed based on the exact relation between skin friction and surface pressure through the boundary enstrophy flux(BEF).The key of this method is that a skin friction field is reconstructed from a surface pressure field as an inverse problem by applying a variational method. For applications, the approximate method is proposed, where the composite surface pressure field is given by a linear superposition of the base-flow surface pressure field and the surface pressure variation field and the base-flow BEF field is used as the first-order approximation. This approximate method is constructive in a mathematical sense since a complex skin friction field in separated flows can be reconstructed from some elemental skin friction structures(skin friction source/sink,vortex and their combinations)by a linear superposition of some simple surface pressure structures. The distinct topological features, such as critical points, separation lines and attachment lines, naturally occur as a result of such reconstruction. As examples, some elemental skin friction structures in separated flows are reconstructed in simulations, and the skin friction fields in shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions(SWBLIs)are reconstructed from pressure sensitive paint(PSP)images obtained in wind tunnel experiments. 展开更多

Local heat transfer and skin friction around the tube perimeter of coils were studied in airflow.
