The time and cost needed for conducting precise experimental investigation on shear behavior of unsaturated soils have encouraged several investigators to develop analytical, empirical, or semi-empirical models for predicting the shear behavior of unsaturated soils. Given the great potential composition space, the field of high/medium entropy alloys (H/MEAs) still lacks effective atomic-scale composition design and screening schemes, which hinders the accurate prediction of desired composition and properties. This study proposes a novel approach for rapidly designing the composition of materials with the aim of overcoming the trade-off between strength and ductility in metal matrix composites. The effect of chemical composition on stacking fault energy (SFE), shear modulus, and phase stability was investigated through the use of molecular dynamics (MD) and thermodynamic calculation software. The alloy's low SFE, highest shear modulus, and stable face-centered cubic (FCC) phase have been identified as three standard physical quantities for rapid screening to characterize the deformation mechanism, ultimate tensile strength, phase stability, and ductility of the alloy. The calculation results indicate that the optimal composition space is expected to fall within the ranges of 17 %–34 % Ni, 33 %–50 % Co, and 25 %–33 % Mn. The comparison of stress-strain curves for various predicted components using simulated and experimental results serves to reinforce the efficacy of the method. This indicates that the screening criteria offer a necessary design concept, deviating from traditional strategies and providing crucial guidance for the rapid development and application of MEAs.展开更多

文摘A buckling-restrained steel plate shear wall(BRSPSW)structure with butterfly-shaped links on the lateral sides is introduced to improve the cooperative perfor-mance between the BRSPSW and the boundary frames.A one-span two-story concrete-filled steel tube(CFT)column frame specimen equipped with lateral-side butterfly-shaped linked BRSPSWs(LBL-BRSPSWs)is evaluated under low-cycle reversed loading.A finite element(FE)model is developed and validated based on the test results. This FE model accurately simulates the failure modes and load-dis-placement curves.Parametric analyses are conducted on the butterfly-shaped links. The results show that the interactions between the CFT column frame and LBL-BRSPSWs are sig-nificantly influenced by the width ratio of the butterfly-shaped links, while the taper ratio and aspect ratio have relatively minor influences.Compared with traditional steel shear walls with four-sided connections,LBL-BRSPSWs reduce the additional axial forces and bending moments in the frame columns by 28%to 73%and 17%to 87%,respectively,with only a 9%to 30%decrease in the lateral resistance. The experimental and parametric analysis results indicate that setting butterfly-shaped links on the lateral sides of BRSPSWs can significantly enhance their cooperative performance with the boundary frame. The butterfly-shaped link width ratio has a linear relationship with the lateral-resistance performance of the specimens and the additional internal forces in the frame columns. To ensure that LBL-BRSPSW fails prior to the column frames, the link width ratio should be optimized.
文摘Although time-dependent deformation of geomaterials underpins slope-failure prediction models, the influence of strain rate on shearing strength and deformation behavior of loess remains unclear. The consolidated undrained(CU)and drained(CD)triaxial testing elucidated the impact of strain rate(0.005–0.3 mm/min)on strength envelopes, deformation moduli, pore pressures, and dilatancy characteristics of unsaturated and quasi-saturated loess.Under drained conditions with a controlled matric suction of 50 kPa,increasing strain rates from 0.005 mm/min to 0.011 mm/min induced decreases in failure deviatoric stress(qf),initial deformation modulus(Ei),and cohesion(c),while friction angles remained unaffected.Specimens displayed initial contractive volumetric strains transitioning to dilation across varying confining pressures.Higher rates diminished contractive volumetric strains and drainage volumes, indicating reduced densification and strength in the shear zone.Under undrained conditions, both unsaturated and quasi-saturated(pore pressure coefficient B=0.75)loess exhibited deteriorating mechanical properties with increasing rates from 0.03 mm/min to 0.3 mm/min.For unsaturated loess, reduced contractive volumetric strains at higher rates manifested relatively looser structures in the pre-peak stress phase. The strength decrement in quasi-saturated loess arose from elevated excess porewater pressures diminishing effective stresses.Negative porewater pressures emerged in quasi-saturated loess at lower confining pressures and strain rates.Compared to previous studies, the qf and Ei exhibited rate sensitivity below threshold values before attaining minima with marginal subsequent influence. The underlying mechanism mirrors the transition from creep to accelerated deformation phase of landslides.

文摘The mechanical parameters and failure characteristics of sandstone under compressive-shear stress states provide crucial theoretical references for underground engineering construction. In this study,a series of varied angle shear tests(VASTs)were designed using acoustic emission(AE)detection and digital image correlation technologies to evaluate the mechanical behaviors of typical red sandstone.AE signal parameters revealed differences in the number and intensity of microcracks within the sandstone, with a test angle(α)of 50°identified as a significant turning point for its failure properties.Whenα³50°,microcrack activity intensified, and the proportion of tensile cracks increased.Asαincreased, the number of fragments generated after failure decreased, fragment sizes became smaller, and the crack network simplified.Cracks extended from the two cut slits at the ends of the rock, gradually penetrating along the centerline towards the central location,as observed from the evolution of the strain concentration field. Both cohesion(c)and internal friction angle(ϕ)measured in VAST were lower than those measured under conventional triaxial compression.

文摘This article studies the effects of different Sn contents on the melting characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of brazed joints of low-silver BAg5CuZn-0.3 wt.%La brazing material.A differential thermal analyzer(HCR-1)was used to measure the solid-liquidus temperature of BAg5CuZn-0.3 wt.%La-xSn brazing material. The results show that the addition of Sn element effect-ively reduces the solid-liquidus temperature of BAg5CuZn-0.3 wt.%La brazing material.Microstructural characterization was con-ducted using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),etc.Analysis re-veals that progressive aggregation and precipitation of Cu-Sn intermetallic compounds occur with increasing Sn content, leading to microstructural coarsening.Notably, severe grain coarsening is observed when the Sn content reaches 4 wt.%.Shear testing of the BAg5CuZn-0.3 wt.%La-xSn brazing joints reveals a non-monotonic trend in joint strength:as Sn content increases, the shear strength initially improves but subsequently deteriorates after reaching an optimal value.

文摘The strength of the sliding zone soil determines the stability of reservoir landslides.Fluctuations in water levels cause a change in the seepage field, which serves as both the external hydrogeological environment and the internal component of a landslide. Therefore, considering the strength changes of the sliding zone with seepage effects, they correspond with the actual hydrogeological circumstances. To investigate the shear behavior of sliding zone soil under various seepage pressures,24 samples were conducted by a self-developed apparatus to observe the shear strength and measure the permeability coefficients at different deformation stages. After seepage-shear tests, the composition of clay minerals and microscopic structure on the shear surface were analyzed through X-ray and scanning electron microscope(SEM)to understand the coupling effects of seepage on strength. The results revealed that the sliding zone soil exhibited strain-hardening without seepage pressure. However, the introduction of seepage caused a significant reduction in shear strength, resulting in strain-softening characterized by a three-stage process.Long-term seepage action softened clay particles and transported broken particles into effective seepage channels, causing continuous damage to the interior structure and reducing the permeability coefficient.Increased seepage pressure decreased the peak strength by disrupting occlusal and frictional forces between sliding zone soil particles, which carried away more clay particles, contributing to an overhead structure in the soil that raised the permeability coefficient and decreased residual strength. The internal friction angle was less sensitive to variations in seepage pressure than cohesion.

文摘Based on the investigation of mechanical response and microstructure evolution of a commercial 7003 aluminum alloy under high-speed impact,a new simple and effective method was proposed to determine the critical strain required for the nucleation of adiabatic shear band(ASB).The deformation results of cylindrical and hat-shaped samples show that the critical strain required for ASB nucleation corresponds to the strain at the first local minimum after peak stress on the first derivative curve of true stress−true strain. The method of determining the critical strain for the nucleation of ASB through the first derivative of the flow stress curve is named the first derivative method. The proposed first derivative method is not only applicable to the 7003 aluminum alloy, but also to other metal materials, such as commercial purity titanium,WY-100 steel, and AM80 magnesium alloy. This proves that it has strong universality.
文摘Non-seismically designed(NSD)beam-column joints are susceptible to joint shear failure under seismic loads.Although significant research is available on the seismic behavior of such joints of planar frames, the information on the seismic behavior of joints of space frames(3D joints)is insufficient. The 3D joints are subjected to bi-directional excitation, which results in an interaction between the shear strength obtained for the joint in the two orthogonal directions separately. The bi-directional seismic behavior of corner reinforced concrete(RC)joints is the focus of this study.First,a detailed finite element(FE)model using the FE software Abaqus,is developed and validated using the test results from the literature. The validated modeling procedure is used to conduct a parametric study to investigate the influence of different parameters such as concrete strength, dimensions of main and transverse beams framing into the joint, presence or absence of a slab, axial load ratio and loading direction on the seismic behavior of joints.By subjecting the models to different combinations of loads on the beams along perpendicular directions, the interaction of the joint shear strength in two orthogonal directions is studied. The comparison of the interaction curves of the joints obtained from the numerical study with a quadratic(circular)interaction curve indicates that in a majority of cases, the quadratic interaction model can represent the strength interaction diagrams of RC beam to column connections with governing joint shear failure reasonably well.

文摘The growing demand for material properties in challenging environments has led to a surge of interest in rapid composition design. This indicates that the screening criteria offer a necessary design concept, deviating from traditional strategies and providing crucial guidance for the rapid development and application of MEAs.

文摘The excellent irradiation resistance, high strength and plasticity exhibited by high-entropy alloys(HEAs)make it candidate for engin-eering applications.Diffusion bonding of Al_(0.3)CoCrFeNi single-phase HEAs was carried out using electric-assisted diffusion bonding(EADB),and the effect of bonding temperature on the evolution of the interfacial microstructure and the mechanical properties was investigated. The results indicate that as the bonding temperature increases, the pores at the interface gradually decrease in size and undergo closure. The electric current significantly promotes the pore closure mechanism dominated by plastic deformation at the diffusion interface and promotes the recrystallisation behavior at the interface, and the fracture mode changes from intergranular fracture at the interface to jagged fracture along the grains spanning the weld parent material.Due to the activation effect of EADB,higher-strength diffusion bonding of high-entropy alloys can be achieved at the same temperature compared with the conventional hot-pressure diffusion bonding(HPDB)process.

文摘A conceptual model of intermittent joints is introduced to the cyclic shear test in the laboratory to explore the effects of loading parameters on its shear behavior under cyclic shear loading. The results show that the loading parameters(initial normal stress, normal stiffness, and shear velocity)determine propagation paths of the wing and secondary cracks in rock bridges during the initial shear cycle, creating different morphologies of macroscopic step-path rupture surfaces and asperities on them. The differences in stress state and rupture surface induce different cyclic shear responses. It shows that high initial normal stress accelerates asperity degradation, raises shear resistance, and promotes compression of intermittent joints. In addition, high normal stiffness provides higher normal stress and shear resistance during the initial cycles and inhibits the dilation and compression of intermittent joints.High shear velocity results in a higher shear resistance, greater dilation, and greater compression. Finally, shear strength is most sensitive to initial normal stress, followed by shear velocity and normal stiffness. Moreover, average dilation angle is most sensitive to initial normal stress, followed by normal stiffness and shear velocity.During the shear cycles, frictional coefficient is affected by asperity degradation, backfilling of rock debris, and frictional area, exhibiting a non-monotonic behavior.

文摘A low rare-earth containing ZEK100-O magnesium alloy was welded to AA1230-clad high-strength AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy via solidstate ultrasonic spot welding(USW)to evaluate the microstructure, tensile lap shear strength, and fatigue properties. The tensile strength increased with increasing welding energy, peaked at a welding energy of 1000 J,and then decreased due to the formation of an increasingly thick diffusion layer mainly containing Al12Mg17intermetallic compound at higher energy levels. The peak tensile lap shear strength attained at 1000 J was attributed to the optimal inter-diffusion between the magnesium alloy and softer AA1230-clad Al layer along with the presence of‘fishhook'-like mechanical interlocks at the weld interface and the formation of an indistinguishable intermetallic layer. The dissimilar joints welded at 1000 J also exhibited a longer fatigue life than other Mg-Al dissimilar joints, suggesting the beneficial role of the softer clad layer with a better intermingling capacity during USW.While the transverse-through-thickness(TTT)failure mode prevailed at lower cyclic loading levels, interfacial failure was the predominant mode of fatigue failure at higher cyclic loads, where distinctive fatigue striations were also observed on the fracture surface of the softer clad Al layer. This was associated with the presence of opening stress and bending moment near the nugget edge despite the tension-tension lap shear cyclic loading applied.

文摘The Mg−Al composite rods of aluminum core-reinforced magnesium alloy were prepared by the extrusion−shear(ES)process, and the microstructure, deformation mechanism, and mechanical properties of the Mg−Al composite rods were investigated at different extrusion temperatures and shear stresses. The experimental results show that the proportion of dynamic recrystallization(DRX)and texture for Al and Mg alloys are controlled by the combination of temperature and shear stress. The texture type of the Al alloys exhibits slight variations at different temperatures. With the increase of temperature, the DRX behavior of Mg alloy shifts from discontinuous DRX(DDRX),continuous DRX(CDRX),and twin-induced DRX(TDRX)dominant to CDRX,the dislocation density in Mg alloy grains decreases significantly, and the average value of Schmid factor(SF)of the basalslip system increases. In particular, partial grains exhibit a distinct dominant slip system at 390℃.The hardness and thickness of the bonding layer,as well as the yield strength and elongation of the Mg alloy, reach their maximum at 360℃as a result of the intricate influence of the combined temperature and shear stress.
