According to the motion characteristics of high-speed and long distance motion landside, the mechanism is studied under different conditions such as shear speed, consolidated drained and consolidated undrained status. Results show that high speed shearing process hinders and delays the dissipation of pore pressure, and drives pore water migrating to shear zone slowly. Both of water content and fine particle content at shear zone are obviously higher than those in other layers; and soil liquefaction occurs at shear zone in the saturated consolidated undrained ring shear tests. The effective internal friction angle of the consolidated undrained soil is much lower than that of the consolidated drained soil under ring shearing. The results also indicate that the shearing speed affecting the strength of soil to some extent. The higher the ring shearing speed is, the lower the strength of soil is. This investigation provides a preliminary interpretation of the mechanism of the motion and acceleration process of the Yigong landslide, occurred in Tibet in 2000.展开更多

To cascade power stations on the Jinsha River, China. Due to the evaluating the rock mass quality and determining the mechanical address these issues, several groups of rock borehole shear tests (RBSTs) were conducted on the black mudstone in the dam foundation of Xiangjiaba hydropower station in the second construction phase. Forty three groups of shear strengths of black mudstone samples were obtained from RBSTs, and the shear strength parameters (c and f) were calculated using the least squares method. There are few studies on the seismic performance of its key connection joint. This paper presents a new type of assembled connection joint for the high-rise modularized construction. Cyclic shear tests of full-scale joints were carried out, and the key indexes of their seismic performances including the hysteretic performance, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity were analyzed and obtained. The results show that the hysteresis loops of longitudinal and lateral cyclic shear tests were both plump in shapes. The ductility coefficients were 4.54 and 4.98, and the energy dissipation coefficients were 1.83 and 1.43, respectively. The test joint had good ductility and energy dissipation capacity. The positions of yield failure of specimens were mainly concentrated in the connection areas between the column and short beam or end-plate. The research can provide the technical reference for the seismic design and engineering application of related modularized constructions.展开更多

In this research, the influence of particle size on shear strength of coarse-grained soils was investigated by resorting to experimental tests in different scale and numerical simulations based on discrete element method (DEM). Experimental tests on such soil specimens were based on using the techniques designated as "parallel" and "scalping" to prepare gradation of samples in view of the limitation of laboratory specimen size. As a second approach, the direct shear test was numerically simulated on assemblies of elliptical particles. The behaviors of samples under experimental and numerical tests are presented and compared, indicating that the modification of sample gradation has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of coarse-grained soils. It is noted that the shear strengths of samples produced by the scalping method are higher than samples by the parallel method. The scalping method for preparing specimens for direct shear test is therefore recommended. The micromechanical behavior of assemblies under direct shear test is also discussed and the effects of stress level on sample behavior are investigated.展开更多

To investigate the dynamic characteristics of transparent sand, a series of undrained cyclic simple shear tests were conducted on the saturated transparent sand composed of fused quartz and refractive index-matched oil mixture. The results reveal that an increase in the initial shear stress ratio significantly affects the shape of the hysteresis loop, particularly resulting in more pronounced asymmetrical accumulation. Factors such as lower relative density, higher cyclic stress ratios and higher initial shear stress ratio have been shown to accelerate cyclic deformation, cyclic pore water pressure and stiffness degradation. The cyclic liquefaction resistance curves decrease as the initial shear stress ratio increases or as relative density decreases. Booker model and power law function model were applied to predict the pore water pressure for transparent sand. Both models yielded excellent fits for their respective condition, indicating a similar dynamic liquefaction pattern to that of natural sands. Finally, transparent sand displays similar dynamic characteristics in terms of cyclic liquefaction resistance and Kα correction factor. These comparisons indicate that transparent sand can serve as an effective means to mimic many natural sands in dynamic model tests.展开更多

文摘In this paper, the motion and acceleration process, as well as the mechanism of a high speed and long run landslide are investigated by adopting high speed ring shear test and taking the landslide occurred at Yigong River in Bomi, Tibet on April 9, 2000 as the background. This investigation provides a preliminary interpretation of the mechanism of the motion and acceleration process of the Yigong landslide, occurred in Tibet in 2000.

文摘The macro mechanical properties of materials with characteristics of large scale and complicated structural composition can be analyzed through its reconstructed meso-structures.In this work, the meso-structures of talus deposits that widely exist in the hydro-power engineering in the southwest of China were first reconstructed by small particles according to the in-situ photographs based on the self-adaptive PCNN digital image processing, and then numerical direct shear tests were carried out for studying the mechanical properties of talus deposits. Results indicate that the reconstructed meso-structures of talus deposits are more consistent with the actual situation because the self-adaptive PCNN digital image processing has a higher discrimination in the details of soil-rock segmentation. The existence and random distribution of rock blocks make the initial shear stiffness, the peak strength and the residual strength higher than those of the "pure soil" with particle size less than 1.25 cm apparently, but reduce the displacements required for the talus deposits reaching its peak shear strength. The increase of rock proportion causes a significant improvement in the internal friction angle of talus deposit, which to a certain degree leads to the characteristics of shear stress-displacement curves having a changing trend from the plastic strain softening deformation to the nonlinear strain hardening deformation, while an unconspicuous increase in cohesion. The uncertainty and heterogeneity of rock distributions cause the differences of rock proportion within shear zone, leading to a relatively strong fluctuation in peak strengths during the shear process, while movement features of rock blocks, such as translation, rotation and crossing, expand the scope of shear zone, increase the required shear force, and also directly lead to the misjudgment that the lower shear strength is obtained from the samples with high rock proportion. That, however, just explains the reason why the shear strength gained from a small amount of indoor test data is not consistent with engineering practice.
文摘For estimating the long-term stability of underground framework,it is vital to learn the mechanical and rheological characteristics of rock in multiple water saturation conditions. However, the majority of previous studies explored the rheological properties of rock in air-dried and water saturated conditions,as well as the water effects on compressive and tensile strengths. In this study, andesite was subjected to direct shear tests under five water saturation conditions, which were controlled by varying the wetting and drying time. The tests were conducted at alternating displacement rates under three vertical stresses. The results reveal that the shear strength decreases exponentially as water saturation increases, and that the increase in shear strength with a tenfold increase in displacement rate is nearly constant for each of the vertical stresses.Based on the findings of the shear tests in this study and the compression and tension tests in previous studies, the influences of both water saturation and loading rate on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for the andesite was examined. These results indicate that the brittleness index of the andesite, which is defined as the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength,is independent of both water saturation and loading rate and that the influences of the water saturation dependence and the loading rate dependence of the failure criterion can be converted between each other.

文摘Xiangjiaba hydropowcr station is one of the complicated geological conditions of its dam foundation, parameters of rock masses are very important issues. In addition, the limitations and merits of RBST employed in the Xiangjiaba hydropower station were discussed. Test results indicate that the shear strength parameters obtained from RBST have a good correlation with the results from sotmd wave test in borehole. It is believed that RBST has a good adaptability and applicability in geotechnical engineering.

文摘The redistribution of three-dimensional(3D)geostress during underground tunnel excavation can easily induce to shear failure along rockmass structural plane, potentially resulting in engineering disasters. However, the current understanding of rockmass shear behavior is mainly based on shear tests under2D stress without lateral stress, the shear fracture under 3D stress is unclear, and the relevant 3D shear fracture theory research is deficient. Therefore, this study conducted true triaxial cyclic loading and unloading shear tests on intact and bedded limestone under different normal stress σ_(n) and lateral stressσ_(p)to investigate the shear strength, deformation, and failure characteristics. The results indicate that under differentσ_(n)and σ_(p),the stress–strain hysteresis loop area gradually increases from nearly zero in the pre-peak stage, becomes most significant in the post-peak stage, and then becomes very small in the residual stage as the number of shear test cycles increases. The shear peak strength and failure surface roughness almost linearly increase with the increase inσ_(n),while they first increase and then gradually decrease asσ_(p)increases,with the maximum increases of 12.9%for strength and 15.1%for roughness. The shear residual strength almost linearly increases withσ_(n),but shows no significant change withσ_(p).Based on the acoustic emission characteristic parameters during the test process, the shear fracture process and microscopic failure mechanism were analyzed. As the shear stressτincreases, the acoustic emission activity, main frequency, and amplitude gradually increase, showing a significant rise during the cycle near the peak strength, while remaining almost unchanged in the residual stage. The true triaxial shear fracture process presents tensile-shear mixture failure characteristics dominated by microscopic tensile failure.Based on the test results,a 3D shear strength criterion considering the lateral stress effect was proposed, and the determination methods and evolution of the shear modulus G,cohesion c_(jp),friction angleφ_(jp),and dilation angleψjpduring rockmass shear fracture process were studied.Under differentσ_(n)andσ_(p),G first rapidly decreases and then tends to stabilize;cjp,φ_(jp),andψjpfirst increase rapidly to the maximum value, then decrease slowly, and finally remain basically unchanged.A 3D shear mechanics model considering the effects of lateral stress and shear parameter degradation was further established, and a corresponding numerical calculation program was developed based on3D discrete element software. The proposed model effectively simulates the shear failure evolution process of rockmass under true triaxial shear test, and is further applied to successfully reveal the failure characteristics of surrounding rocks with structural planes under different combinations of tunnel axis and geostress direction.

文摘Modularized construction is a new type of prefabricated building system with green environmental protection and excellent performance. The research can provide the technical reference for the seismic design and engineering application of related modularized constructions.

文摘Railway ballast is easily contaminated by different fouling material and the fouled ballast always causes the deterioration of railway track. Many previous studies focused on the effect of a certain kind of fouling material on ballast performance, but few studies compared the influence of different fouling material. This paper presents a series of direct shear tests on the clean ballast and the fouled ballast mixed with coal fines or sand to understand the effects of different fouling material.A unified empirical model is proposed to well capture the shear stress-displacement responses of the clean and fouled ballast.Empirical equations are also obtained to characterize the variation of the nonlinear shear strength envelope of the fouled ballast with the fouling content.Based on these equations,a simple method is proposed to predict the shear strength of the fouled ballast using the shear test results of clean ballast. The measured results demonstrate significant differences between the effects of coal fines and sand on the shear behaviors of ballast,to which particular attention should be paid in order to take targeted maintenance measures for the fouled ballast. The mechanisms for the different effects of coal fines and sand are also analyzed to understand the roles that various fouling material plays in the fouled ballast.

文摘The negative Poisson’s ratio(NPR)bolt is an innovative support element distinguished by its high strength, elongation, and a slightly negative Poisson’s ratio.Unlike conventional prestressed(PR)bolts with a positive Poisson’s ratio, the NPR bolt exhibits a quasi-ideal plastic response without a prominent yield platform, enabling it to sustain high prestress with a substantial safety margin, which is particularly advantageous for jointed rock masses. However, investigations into the shear resistance mechanisms of NPR bolts under varying prestress levels remain limited. This study conducted full-scale double shear tests to assess the shear strength, deformation behavior, energy absorption, and failure mechanisms of NPR bolts under different prestress conditions. To ensure a fair comparison with PR bolts,a prestress utilization coefficient(PUC)was introduced. The results reveal that at a PUC of 0.25,the NPR bolt achieved peak axial force, shear displacement, and peak shear force values that are 2.41,1.88,and 2.13 times greater than those of the PR bolt, respectively.Shear performance was optimized at a prestress level of 100 kN,with energy absorption reaching 47.1 kJ,which is 2.8 times that of the PR bolt.Furthermore, the necking ratio was significantly reduced, indicating more distributed plastic deformation and delayed failure.Field applications verified the superior performance, resulting in a 27.4%reduction in roof settlement and enhanced structural integrity. These findings confirm that NPR bolts possess excellent shear resistance, energy absorption, and deformation adaptability, and optimizing prestress significantly enhances their support performance, providing a strong basis for geotechnical engineering applications.

文摘High geo-stress and high temperature in deep rock engineering increase the possibility of engineering and geological disasters in discontinuous rocks. However, the influence of thermomechanical coupling on the shear behavior and damage evolution of prefractured granite remains immature. In this context, true triaxial laboratory tests and discrete element method simulations under different confining pressures(σ3=3 MPa,σ2=4 MPa,andσ3=80 MPa,σ2=100 MPa)and temperatures(25℃-500℃)were carried out on rough granite fractures with two different orientations. Results indicate that high temperature and high confining pressure increase the peak strength of the prefractured specimen, leading to more microcracks in the host rock and more gouges between the surfaces.Thermal strengthening at low temperatures(<300℃)and residual stick-slip only occur under a greater confining pressure for prefractured specimens.High confining pressure suppresses generation of the thermal microcracks in the heating stage.Cracks first initiate in the asperities on the fracture surfaces, and then propagate into the rock matrix during the mechanical loading stage. In addition, prefractured granite with a larger fracture angle is characterized by smaller peak and residual strength, faster residual slip, fewer new cracks on the specimen surface, and a more pronounced thermal strengthening effect on peak strength. The slip tendency analysis indicates that a higher maximum principal stress(s1)and a large fracture angle(45°-75°)generally result in a higher potential for fracture slip or activation. This study will contribute to a better understanding of the fracture shear mechanism under true triaxial thermomechanical coupling conditions and provides new insights into the stability evaluation of deep dynamic geological hazards.

文摘High rock temperature is a great challenge frequently encountered during subsurface resource recovery and deep underground space utilization, and it is still unclear how the granitic rock responds to realtime high temperature upon shear loading. To better understand the shear fracture behavior and underlying processes of intact granite exposed to thermal-mechanical coupling loading, direct shear tests were conducted utilizing a newly built testing apparatus at varied normal stresses and high temperatures.Influencesof different temperatures and different heating methods(real-time heating and thermal treatment)on the shear mechanical behavior were compared and discussed. Results indicate that shear stress fluctuationswith some small stress drops occur as shear stress is approaching the peak strength under real-time heating, accompanied by more and earlier AE signal uprushes. This suggests that greater cracking events occur earlier during real-time heating than after thermal treatment, resulting in a lower peak shear strength.Furthermore, the peak shear strength,post-peak stress drop, and cohesion rise from room temperature(RT)to 200℃(the peak strength increases by 8%,5.8%,and 9.9%under normal stress of 5 MPa,15 MPa,and 20 MPa,correspondingly),and subsequently decline from 200℃to 400℃.Temperature has a limited impact on shear stiffness from RT to 200℃,but significantlyreduces it from 200℃to 400℃,with drops of 15%,7.9%,and 10%under normal stress of 5 MPa,15 MPa,and 20 MPa,respectively. Moreover, the shear strength and stiffness under real-time heating are lower than those for the thermally treated specimens. The strengthening of intact granite below 200℃upon shear is associated with loss of water and a more compacted structure, while the weakening effect of temperature on shear strength from 200℃to 400℃is due to the new thermal cracks and less brittle and stiff of minerals.
文摘Plant roots are widely known to provide mechanical reinforcement to soils against shearing and further increase slope stability. However, whether roots provide reinforcement to loess cyclic re-sistance and how various factors affect roots reinforcement during seismic loading have rarely been studied. The objective is to conduct a series of cyclic direct simple shear tests and DEM numerical simulation to investigate the cyclic behaviour of rooted loess. The effects of initial static shear stress and loading frequency on the cyclic resistance of root-soil composites were first investigated. After that, cyclic direct simple shear simulations at constant volume were carried out based on the discrete element method(PFC^(3D))to investigate the effects of root geome-try,mechanical traits and root-soil bond strength on the cyclic strength of rooted loess. It was discovered that the roots could effectively improve the cyclic resistance of loess. The cyclic resistance of the root-soil composite decreases with the increase of the initial shear stress, then increases, and improves with the increase of the frequency. The simulation result show that increases in root elastic modulus and root-soil interfacial bond strength can all enhance the cyclic resistance of root-soil composites, and the maximum cyclic resistance of the root-soil composite was obtained when the initial inclination angle of the root system was 90°.
文摘The presence of particles larger than the permissible dimensions of conventional laboratory specimens causes difficulty in the determination of shear strength of coarse-grained soils. The micromechanical behavior of assemblies under direct shear test is also discussed and the effects of stress level on sample behavior are investigated.

文摘Transparent sand is a special material to realize visualization of concealed work in geotechnical engineering. These comparisons indicate that transparent sand can serve as an effective means to mimic many natural sands in dynamic model tests.

文摘The sensitivity analysis investigates the effect of particles shape(made by sphere,multi-spheres or polyhedral)for various contact force models on the calibration procedure via ring shear test.Experimental shear tests were performed using a Schulze Ring Shear Tester RST-01 with spherical and cubic particles.Pre-shear stress and vertical lid position behaviour were observed using Hertz-Mindlin and Linear Spring contact models. The findings confirm the necessity to include not only the shear force but also the compress behaviour of the particles in the shear test calibration. The results clearly indicate that the position of the shear lid provides discrete element method users with an important overview of the fundamental deformation behaviour and particle displacement during the pre-shear process. The results reveal differences between particle and contact force models considering the changes due to increased shear velocity useable for different representation of real-life particulate materials. The research is intended to provide DEM modellers with general information on which parameters are affected by changing the input data for each contact force model and particle shape. These insights enhance calibration procedures in both industrial and academic settings serving as a foundation for not only time optimizing DEM models and improving their accuracy.

文摘Prolonged cyclic water intrusion has progressively developed joints in the hydro-fluctuation belt, elevating the instability risk of reservoir bank slopes. To investigate its impact on joint shear damage evolution, joint samples were prepared using three representative roughness curves and subjected to direct shear testing following cyclic water intrusion.A shear damage constitutive model considering the coupling effect of cyclic water intrusion and load was developed based on macroscopic phenomenological damage mechanics and micro-statistical theory. Results indicate:(1)All critical shear mechanical parameters(including peak shear strength, shear stiffness, basic friction angle, and joint compressive strength)exhibit progressive deterioration with increasing water intrusion cycles;(2)Model validation through experimental curve comparisons confirms its reliability. The model demonstrates that intensified water intrusion cycles reduce key mechanical indices, inducing a brittle-to-ductile transition in joint surface deformation—a behavior consistent with experimental observations;(3)Damage under cyclic water intrusion and load coupling follows an S-shaped trend, divided into stabilization(water-dominated stage),development(load-dominated stage),and completion stages. The research provides valuable insights for stability studies, such as similar model experiments for reservoir bank slopes and other water-related projects.

文摘Understanding the anchorage performance of en-echelon joints under cyclic shear loading is crucial for optimizing support strategies in jointed rock masses. This study examines the anchorage effects on enechelon joints with various orientations using laboratory cyclic shear tests.By comparing unbolted and bolted en-echelon joints,we analyze shear zone damage, shear properties, dilatancy, energy absorption, and acoustic emission characteristics to evaluate anchoring effects across shear cycles and joint orientations. Results reveal that bolted en-echelon joints experience more severe shear zone damage after cycles, with bolt deformation correlating to shear zone width.Bolted en-echelon joints exhibit faster shear strength deterioration and higher cumulative strength loss compared to unbolted ones, with losses ranging from 20.04%to 72.76%.The compressibility of en-echelon joints reduces the anchoring effect during shear cycles, leading to lower shear strength of bolted en-echelon joints in later stages of shear cycles compared to unbolted ones.Bolts reinforce en-echelon joints more effectively at non-positive angles, with the best performance observed at 0°and-60°.Anchorage accelerates the transition from rolling friction to sliding friction in the shear zone, enhancing energy absorption, which is crucial for rock projects under dynamic shear loading.Additionally, rock bolts expedite the transition of the cumulative AE hits and cumulative AE energy curves from rapid to steady growth, indicating that strong bolt-rock interactions accelerate crack initiation, propagation, and energy release.

文摘The scaled suction caisson repre sents an innovative design featuring a bio-inspired sidewall modeled after snake skin, commonly utilized in offshore mooring platforms. In comparison with traditional suction caissons, this bio-inspired design demonstrates reduced penetration resistance and enhanced pull-out capacity due to the anisotropic shear behaviors of its sidewall. To investigate the shear behavior of the bio-inspired sidewall under pull-out load, direct shear tests were conducted between the bio-inspired surface and sand. The research demonstrates that the interface shear strength of the bio-inspired surface significantly surpasses that of the smooth surface due to interlocking effects.Additionally, the interface shear strength correlates with the aspect ratio of the bio-inspired surface, shear angle, and particle diameter distribution, with values increasing as the uniformity coefficient Cudecreases, while initially increasing and subsequently decreasing with increases in both aspect ratio and shear angle. The ratio between the interface friction angleδand internal friction angle δ_(s) defines the interface effect factor k.For the bio-inspired surface, the interface effect factor k varies with shear angleβ,ranging from 0.9 to 1.12.The peak value occurs at a shear angleβof 60°,substantially exceeding that of the smooth surface.A method for calculating the relative roughness R_(N) is employed to evaluate the interface roughness of the bio-inspired surface, taking into account scale dimension and particle diameter distribution effects.
