BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes(T2D)is a major health concern globally and its prevalence is expected to continue to escalate.Lifestyle intervention is an integral part of T2D management.Meal replacements are often used as part of lifestyle intervention programs in T2D and weight management programs. There are various trials being carried out to date;however,a thorough review regarding the usage of meal replacement on its types, dosage and associated outcomes and adverse events is still lacking.AIM To provide a comprehensive overview on existing studies regarding meal replacement usage among patients with T2D,and map out glycemic and weightrelated outcomes along with adverse effects incidences.METHODS This scoping review is conducted based on Arksey and O’Malley’s seminal framework for scoping reviews.A systematic search has been done for studies published between January 2020 and January 2024 across six online databases(Cochrane Library,PubMed,Science Direct,Scopus,Web of Science and Ebscohost Discovery)using specific keywords. Two researchers independently assessed the eligibility of the studies and extracted the data. The selected articles and extracted data were reviewed by all researchers.RESULTS The initial search resulted in an initial count of 53922 articles from which 133 articles were included in this review after eligibility screening.Included studies were categorized based on meal replacement type into low calorie/energy,low glycemic index,protein-rich,low-fat,diabetes-specific formulas, and combined lifestyle intervention programs.Fifty-nine studies reported improvements on hemoglobin A1c,and 70 studies reported positive changes in weight or BMI after the meal replacement intervention. The combination of meal replacements with education, counseling or structured lifestyle interventions has proved to be effective.Only 13 studies reported occurrence of adverse events related to the intervention. Most of the reported incidents were of mild occurrences with constipation being the most reported adverse event.CONCLUSION The results suggest that meal replacements, especially when combined with lifestyle intervention programs and counseling, are an effective and safe strategy in glycemic and weight management among patients with T2D. 展开更多

Digestive system cancers are important causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.Cancer patients are more likely to commit suicide. The objective of this scoping review is to provide a comprehensive and updated summary of the existing literature on suicide among patients with digestive system cancers to identify the incidence and risk factors relevant to suicide in these populations. The PRISMA-Scr(Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension protocol for scoping reviews)protocol was used. The review was based on relevant articles published prior to January 2022 in databases of Web of Science and PubMed.The authors identified 21 records that met the criteria for inclusion.Among the 21 articles,18(n=85.7%)reported suicide risk factors,21(n=100%)evaluated the incidence of suicide and 16(n=76.2%)involved the variation in suicide rates.Only one study comprehensively reported that the suicide rate for this population was 32.8 per 100,000 years and the standardized mortality ratio(SMR)was 1.91.Most suicides occurred in patients with pancreatic, esophageal, and gastric cancers. The factors associated with suicide in digestive system cancers included male gender, older age,the white race, single status, advanced stage of disease, and cancer metastasis. The most critical time for suicide was in the early post-diagnostic period. It is indispensable to identify suicide in these cancer patients, especially those with high-risk factors. In the future, more prospective research may be needed to provide more reliable support and care to prevent suicide. 展开更多

Objective:The aim of this scoping review was to provide evidence for health practitioners to improve patient education practice for chronic pain management. Methods:A scoping review was guided by Arksey and O’Malley’s(2005)1 five-stage framework, investigated contemporary patient education programs(2007–2018)for chronic pain management in education content, formats of delivery, and tools used for evaluation.Content analysis and description were used for the outcome report. Results:Seven quantitative studies were included.Education content consisted of General information,Cognitive behavior therapy(CBT),Self-management,and Pain neurophysiology(PN).Education delivery formats varied from workbook to workbook,face-toface,online,when given for a group or individual or in a combined way.In total,19 tools were reported for the evaluation of the education programs. Conclusions:There is a variety in the education content and the delivery formats. The majority of programs showed effectiveness in patients’chronic pain management based on their selected evaluation tools. This review showed that patient education programs can be useful in chronic pain management. The effectiveness of patient education programs focuses on the improved patients’physical function and quality of life rather than the cessation of pain only. 展开更多

Nowadays,an increasing number of crises worldwide, triggered by climate extremes, natural and human-made hazards, the coronavirus pandemic, and more, pose a high pressure on crisis, emergency, and disaster management.Spatial data and Volunteered Geographic Information(VGI)are key issues in the successful and immediate response to crises. This paper aims to explore the use of VGI in crisis management, including emergency and disaster management, based on a scoping review of existing literature in English for five years(2016-2020).Specifically,the research intends to answer Scoping Review Questions(SRQ)regarding the use of VGI in crisis, emergency, and disaster management, and the verified cases’spatial distribution, the VGI sources utilized(e.g.OpenStreetMap-OSM,Crowdsourcing,Twitter),the types of hazards(e.g.natural and human-made hazards, pandemic),the specific tasks in crisis, emergency or disaster management and VGI use in the management of actual crisis events,e.g.COVID-19 pandemic,Hurricane Katrina, etc.Eligible papers on VGI use in crisis, emergency, and disaster management are geolocated based on first-author affiliation, and as a result,a spatial bibliography is provided. Thus, the term Spatial Scoping Review is introduced.Scoping Review Questions are answered, and the results are analyzed and discussed. Finally, implementing the“VGICED Atlas”,a web atlas, permits the publication of the research results to a broad audience and the visualization of the analysis with several interactive maps. 展开更多
