The scaled suction caisson repre sents an innovative design featuring a bio-inspired sidewall modeled after snake skin, commonly utilized in offshore mooring platforms. In comparison with traditional suction caissons, this bio-inspired design demonstrates reduced penetration resistance and enhanced pull-out capacity due to the anisotropic shear behaviors of its sidewall. To investigate the shear behavior of the bio-inspired sidewall under pull-out load, direct shear tests were conducted between the bio-inspired surface and sand. The research demonstrates that the interface shear strength of the bio-inspired surface significantly surpasses that of the smooth surface due to interlocking effects.Additionally, the interface shear strength correlates with the aspect ratio of the bio-inspired surface, shear angle, and particle diameter distribution, with values increasing as the uniformity coefficient Cudecreases, while initially increasing and subsequently decreasing with increases in both aspect ratio and shear angle. The ratio between the interface friction angleδand internal friction angle δ_(s) defines the interface effect factor k.For the bio-inspired surface, the interface effect factor k varies with shear angleβ,ranging from 0.9 to 1.12.The peak value occurs at a shear angleβof 60°,substantially exceeding that of the smooth surface.A method for calculating the relative roughness R_(N) is employed to evaluate the interface roughness of the bio-inspired surface, taking into account scale dimension and particle diameter distribution effects. 展开更多

The spherically layered media theory has wide applications for electromagnetic wave scattering analysis.Due to the involved Bessel functions, the conventional formulations of spherically layered media theory suffer from numerical overflow or underflow when the Bessel function’s order is large, the argument is small or the argument has a large imaginary part. The first two issues have been solved recently by employing small-argument asymptotic formulas of Bessel functions, while the third issue remains unsolved. In this paper, the Bessel functions in the conventional formulation of the theory are replaced by scaled Bessel functions which have good numerical properties for high loss media, and stable formulas are derived.Numerical tests show that this approach can work properly with very high lossy media. Also, this approach can be seamlessly combined with the stable computation method for cases of small argument and large order of Bessel functions. 展开更多

The ground-based experimental tests are crucial to verify the related technologies of the drag-free satellite. This work presents a design method of the ground simulator testbed for emulating the planar dynamics of the space drag-free systems. In this paper, the planar dynamic characteristics of the drag-free satellite with double test masses are analyzed and nondimensionalized.A simulator vehicle composed of an air bearing testbed and two inverted pendulums is devised on the basic of equivalent mass and equivalent stiffness proposed firstly in this paper. And the dynamic model of the simulator equivalent to the sensitive axis motion of the test mass and the planar motion of the satellite is derived from the Euler-Lagrange method. Then, the dynamic equivalence conditions between the space prototype system and the ground model system are derived from Pi theorem. To satisfy these conditions, the scaling laws of two systems and requirements for the inverted pendulum are put forward.Besides, the corresponding control scaling laws and a closed-loop control strategy are deduced and applied to establishing the numerical simulation experiments of underactuated system.Subsequently, the comparative simulation results demonstrate the similarity of dynamical behavior between the scaled-down ground model and the space prototype. As a result, the rationality and effectiveness of the design method are proved, facilitating the ground simulation of future gravitational wave detection satellites. 展开更多

Segregated incompressible large eddy simulation and acoustic perturbation equations were used to obtain the flow field and sound field of 1:25 scale trains with three, six and eight coaches in a long tunnel, and the aerodynamic results were verified by wind tunnel test with the same scale two-coach train model.Time-averaged drag coefficients of the head coach of three trains are similar, but at the tail coach of the multi-group trains it is much larger than that of the three-coach train. The eight-coach train presents the largest increment from the head coach to the tail coach in the standard deviation(STD)of aerodynamic force coefficients:0.0110 for drag coefficient(Cd),0.0198 for lift coefficient(Cl)and 0.0371 for side coef-ficient(Cs).Total sound pressure level at the bottom of multi-group trains presents a significant streamwise increase, which is different from the three-coach train.Tunnel walls affect the acoustic distribution at the bottom, only after the coach number reaches a certain value, and the streamwise increase in the sound pressure fluctuation of multi-group trains is strengthened by coach number.Fourier transform of the turbulent and sound pressures presents that coach number has little influence on the peak frequencies, but increases the sound pressure level values at the tail bogie cavities.Furthermore, different from the turbulent pressure, the first two sound pressure proper orthogonal decomposition(POD)modes in the bogie cavities contain 90%of the total energy, and the spatial distributions indicate that the acoustic distributions in the head and tail bogies are not related to coach number. 展开更多

The solution to heat transfer problems in two-dimensional heterogeneous media is attended based on the scaled boundary finite element method(SBFEM)coupled with equilibrated basis functions(EqBFs).The SBFEM reduces the model order by scaling the boundary solution onto the inner element. To this end,tri-lateral elements are emanated from a scaling center, followed by the development of a semi-analytical solution along the radial direction and a finite element solution along the circumferential/boundary direction. The discretization is thus limited to the boundaries of the model, and the semi-analytical radial solution is found through the solution of an eigenvalue problem, which restricts the methods’applicability to heterogeneous media. In this research,we first extracted the SBFEM formulation considering the heterogeneity of the media. Then,we replaced the semi-analytical radial solution with the EqBFs and removed the eigenvalue solution step from the SBFEM.The varying coefficients of the partial differential equation(PDE)resulting from the heterogeneity of the media are replaced by a finite series in the radial and circumferential directions of the element.A weighted residual approach is applied to the radial equation. The equilibrated radial solution series is used in the new formulation of the SBFEM. 展开更多

The blast-induced ground vibration prediction using scaled distance regression analysis is one of the most popular methods employed by engineers for many decades. It uses the maximum charge per delay and distance of monitoring as the major factors for predicting the peak particle velocity(PPV). It is established that the PPV is caused by the maximum charge per delay which varies with the distance of monitoring and site geology. While conducting a production blasting, the waves induced by blasting of different holes interfere destructively with each other, which may result in higher PPV than the predicted value with scaled distance regression analysis. This phenomenon of interference/superimposition of waves is not considered while using scaled distance regression analysis. In this paper, an attempt has been made to compare the predicted values of blast-induced ground vibration using multi-hole trial blasting with single-hole blasting in an opencast coal mine under the same geological condition. Further, the modified prediction equation for the multi-hole trial blasting was obtained using single-hole regression analysis. The error between predicted and actual values of multi-hole blast-induced ground vibration was found to be reduced by 8.5%. 展开更多

The effectiveness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) grids as the strengthening materials for a pre-damaged scaled tunnel model is experimentally investigated. First, the bond performances between the CFRP grid and the concrete under different types of adhesive and surface treatment were tested. The most efficient anchoring system was adopted for the subsequent scaled tunnel strengthening. Test results show that when the epoxy structural adhesive was used as the bonding material, the failure mode was CFRP grids rupturing, and the anchorage performance was optimal. When the polymer mortar was used as the adhesive, the surface treatments with anchored bolts and grooves can improve the bond performance, and the failure mode was sliding failure with the polymer mortar peeled off. After strengthening with CFRP grids, both the stiffness and the load capacity of the pre-damaged scaled tunnel model were improved. Additionally, the results obtained by fiber bragg grating(FBG) sensors indicate that the strains across tunnel segments were reduced, and the overall performance of the tunnel was improved. 展开更多

Consideration of structure-foundation-soil dynamic interaction is a basic requirement in the evaluation of the seismic safety of nuclear power facilities. An efficient and accurate dynamic interaction numerical model in the time domain has become an important topic of current research. In this study, the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is improved for use as an effective numerical approach with good application prospects. This method has several advantages, including dimensionality reduction, accuracy of the radial analytical solution, and unlike other boundary element methods, it does not require a fundamental solution. This study focuses on establishing a high performance scaled boundary finite element interaction analysis model in the time domain based on the acceleration unit-impulse response matrix, in which several new solution techniques, such as a dimensionless method to solve the interaction force, are applied to improve the numerical stability of the actual soil parameters and reduce the amount of calculation. Finally, the feasibility of the time domain methods are illustrated by the response of the nuclear power structure and the accuracy of the algorithms are dynamically verified by comparison with the refinement of a large-scale viscoelastic soil model. 展开更多

The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is a novel semi-analytical technique combining the advantage of the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) with its unique properties. In this paper, the SBFEM is used for computing wave passing submerged breakwaters, and the reflection coeffcient and transmission coefficient are given for the case of wave passing by a rectangular submerged breakwater, a rigid submerged barrier breakwater and a trapezium submerged breakwater in a constant water depth. The results are compared with the analytical solution and experimental results. Good agreement is obtained. Through comparison with the results using the dual boundary element method (DBEM), it is found that the SBFEM can obtain higher accuracy with fewer elements. Many submerged breakwaters with different dimensions are computed by the SBFEM, and the changing character of the reflection coeffcient and the transmission coefficient are given in the current study. 展开更多

Density, ρ, ultrasonic speed, u, and viscosity, η, of binary mixtures of 2-methyl-2-propanol (2M2P) with acetonitrile (AN), propionitrile (PN) and butyronitrile (BN) including those of pure liquids are measured over the entire composition range at temperatures 298.15, 303.15 and 308.15 K. From these experimental data, the excess available volume, E a V , excess free volume, E f V , excess isothermal compressibility, E T β , excess thermal expansion coefficient, E α , and excess internal pressure, E i π , are calculated. The variation of these properties with composition and temperature are discussed in terms of molecular interactions between unlike molecules of the mixtures. It is found that the values of E a V , E f V , E T β and E α are positive and those of E i π are negative for all the mixtures at each temperature studied, indicating the presence of weak interactions between 2M2P and AN/PN/BN molecules. The variations of E a V , E f V , E T β , E α and E i π values with composition indicate that the interactions in these mixtures follow the order: AN<PN<BN, i.e., the 2M2P-nitrile interaction decreases with the increase of alkyl chain length in these nitrile molecules. In addition, the theoretical ultrasonic velocity is calculated using the scaled particle theory and compared with the experimental values. 展开更多

A boundary-type meshless method called the scaled boundary node method (SBNM) is developed to directly evaluate mixed mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) without extra post-processing. The SBNM combines the scaled boundary equations with the moving Kriging (MK) interpolation to retain the dimensionality advantage of the former and the meshless attribute of the latter. As a result, the SBNM requires only a set of scattered nodes on the boundary, and the displacement field is approximated by using the MK interpolation technique, which possesses the 5 function property. This makes the developed method efficient and straightforward in imposing the essential boundary conditions, and no special treatment techniques are required. Besides, the SBNM works by weakening the governing differential equations in the circumferential direction and then solving the weakened equations analytically in the radial direction. Therefore, the SBNM permits an accurate representation of the singularities in the radial direction when the scaling center is located at the crack tip. Numerical examples using the SBNM for computing the SIFs are presented. Good agreements with available results in the literature are obtained. 展开更多

This Inertial Navigation System (INS), Global Positioning System (GPS) and fluxgate magnetometer technologies have been widely used in a variety of positioning and navigation applications. In this paper, a low cost solid state INS/GPS/Magnetometer integrated navigation system has been developed that incorporates measurements from an Inertial Navigation System (INS), Global Positioning System (GPS) and fluxgate magnetometer (Mag.) to provide a reliable complete navigation solution at a high output rate. The body attitude estimates, especially the heading angle, are fundamental challenges in a navigation system. Therefore targeting accurate attitude estimation is considered a significant contribution to the overall navigation error. A better estimation of the body attitude estimates leads to more accurate position and velocity estimation. For that end, the aim of this research is to exploit the magnetometer and accelerometer data in the attitude estimation technique. In this paper, a Scaled Unscented Kalman Filter (SUKF) based on the quaternion concept is designed for the INS/GPS/Mag integrated navigation system under large attitude error conditions. Simulation and experimental results indicate a satisfactory performance of the newly developed model. 展开更多

The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is a recently developed numerical method combining advantages of both finite element methods (FEM) and boundary element methods (BEM) and with its own special features as well. One of the most prominent advantages is its capability of calculating stress intensity factors (SIFs) directly from the stress solutions whose singularities at crack tips are analytically represented. This advantage is taken in this study to model static and dynamic fracture problems. For static problems, a remeshing algorithm as simple as used in the BEM is developed while retaining the generality and flexibility of the FEM. Fully-automatic modelling of the mixed-mode crack propagation is then realised by combining the remeshing algorithm with a propagation criterion. For dynamic fracture problems, a newly developed series-increasing solution to the SBFEM governing equations in the frequency domain is applied to calculate dynamic SIFs. Three plane problems are modelled. The numerical results show that the SBFEM can accurately predict static and dynamic SIFs, cracking paths and load-displacement curves, using only a fraction of degrees of freedom generally needed by the traditional finite element methods. 展开更多

The numerical solutions for uncertain viscoelastic problems have important theo- retical and practical significance. The paper develops a new approach by combining the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) and fuzzy arithmetic. For the viscoelastic problems with zero uncertainty, the SBFEM and the temporally piecewise adaptive algorithm is employed in the space domain and the time domain, respectively, in order to provide an accurate semi- analytical boundary-based approach and to ensure the accuracy of discretization in the time domain with different sizes of time step at the same time. The fuzzy arithmetic is used to address the uncertainty analysis of viscoelastic material parameters, and the transformation method is used for computation with the advantages of effectively avoiding overestimation and reducing the computational costs. Numerical examples are provided to test the performance of the proposed method. By comparing with the analytical solutions and the Monte Carlo method, satisfactory results are achieved. 展开更多
