Frequent typhoons can significantly change the temperature, nutrient availability, and phytoplankton biomass in marginal seas. The oceanic response to typhoons is usually influenced by the features of the typhoon, among which the translational speed is critically important.By using a high resolution coupled physical-biological model,we investigated the response of the Yellow and East China seas(YECS)to two typhoons at different translational speeds,Muifa in August 2011 and Bolaven in August 2012.The model well reproduced the spatial and temporal variations of temperature,chlorophyll-a concentration over the YECS.Results show that typhoons with slower translational speeds uplift more deep water, leading to a more significant oceanic response.Divergence and convergence caused nutrient fluxes in opposite directions in the surface and bottom layers. Moreover, the nutrient flux in the bottom layer was greater than that in the surface layer. These phenomena are closely related to the spatial distribution of nutrients.Further studies show that the degree of ocean response to typhoons is highly correlated with the initial conditions of physical and biological elements of the upper ocean before the typhoon,as well as with ocean structure.Pretyphoon initial conditions of oceanic physical and ecological elements, mixed layer depth, and potential energy anomalies can all alter the degree of typhoon-induced oceanic response. This study emphasizes the important roles of the translational speed of typhoons and the initial oceanic conditions in the oceanic response to typhoons. 展开更多

Additive friction stir deposition(AFSD)is a novel structural repair and manufacturing technology has become a research hotspot at home and abroad in the past five years. In this work, the microstructural evolution and mechanical performance of the Al-Mg-Si alloy plate repaired by the preheating-assisted AFSD process were investigated. To evaluate the tool rotation speed and substrate preheating for repair quality, the AFSD technique was used to additively repair 5 mm depth blind holes on 6061 aluminum alloy substrates. The results showed that preheat-assisted AFSD repair significantly improved joint bonding and joint strength compared to the control non-preheat substrate condition. Moreover, increasing rotation speed was also beneficial to improve the metallurgical bonding of the interface and avoid volume defects.Under preheating conditions, the UTS and elongation were positively correlated with rotation speed.Under the process parameters of preheated substrate and tool rotation speed of 1000 r/min,defect-free specimens could be obtained accompanied by tensile fracture occurring in the substrate rather than the repaired zone. The UTS and elongation reached the maximum values of 164.2MPa and 13.4%,which are equivalent to 99.4%and 140%of the heated substrate, respectively. 展开更多

Inconel 718(IN718)alloy is widely applied to fabricate high temperature resistant or corrosion resistant parts due to its excellent mechanical performance. However, the machining of IN718 alloy is difficult as it may cause serious tool wear and poor surface quality(SQ)of the workpiece. In this work, grinding experiments on IN718 alloy at different speeds were conducted by using a CBN grinding wheel. The relationship between grinding speed,SQ and subsurface damage(SSD)was well studied. With increasing grinding speed, surface roughness decreased, and SQ was greatly improved.Meanwhile, the microhardness of the grinding surface declined as the grinding speed increased. The SSD depth was almost unchanged when the grinding speed was lower than 15 m/s,then it decreased with higher grinding speeds. It was attributed to the mechanical-thermal synergistic effect in the grinding process. The results indicated that increasing grinding speed can effectively improve the SQ and reduce the SSD of IN718 alloy. The conclusion in the work may also provide insight into processing other hard-to-machining materials. 展开更多

The 42 kg industrial H13 castings were prepared by different super-gravity fields with multi-rotation speeds, and the distribution of oxide inclusions in the castings was studied. In addition, the inward movement Reynolds number and inward movement time of oxide inclusions as well as the solidification time of molten steel at different positions in the castings were calculated to clarify the removal mechanism of oxide inclusions in super-gravity field. The results show that the large size(i.e.,greater than 10μm)oxide inclusions are mainly concentrated in the inner and outer parts of the super-gravity castings with constant rotation speed(500 r min^(-1))and five-stage rotation speeds(500,600,750,850,and 950 r min^(-1)),respectively,while there are no large oxide inclusions in the super-gravity castings with three-stage rotation speeds(500,600,and 750 r min^(-1)).Although an increase in the particle size of inclusion and the rotation speed in super-gravity field is conducive to the increase in the inward movement Reynolds number of oxide inclusions and reduction in the inward movement time of oxide inclusions,it will reduce the local solidification time of molten steel. In the range of the rotation speed studied, the super-gravity field with three-stage rotation speeds has the best effect on the removal of inclusions in H13 molten steel. 展开更多

Numerical weather prediction(NWP)models have always presented large forecasting errors of surface wind speeds over regions with complex terrain. In this study, surface wind forecasts from an operational NWP model, the SMS-WARR(Shanghai Meteorological Service-WRF ADAS Rapid Refresh System),are analyzed to quantitatively reveal the relationships between the forecasted surface wind speed errors and terrain features, with the intent of providing clues to better apply the NWP model to complex terrain regions. The terrain features are described by three parameters:the standard deviation of the model grid-scale orography, terrain height error of the model, and slope angle. The results show that the forecast bias has a unimodal distribution with a change in the standard deviation of orography. The minimum ME(the mean value of bias)is 1.2 m s^(-1) when the standard deviation is between 60 and 70 m.A positive correlation exists between bias and terrain height error, with the ME increasing by 10%−30%for every 200 m increase in terrain height error. The ME decreases by 65.6%when slope angle increases from(0.5°−1.5°)to larger than 3.5°for uphill winds but increases by 35.4%when the absolute value of slope angle increases from(0.5°−1.5°)to(2.5°−3.5°)for downhill winds.Several sensitivity experiments are carried out with a model output statistical(MOS)calibration model for surface wind speeds and ME(RMSE)has been reduced by 90%(30%)by introducing terrain parameters, demonstrating the value of this study. 展开更多

The effects of vacuum assistance on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-pressure die cast AZ91 D alloy at different slow shot speeds were evaluated. Plate-shaped castings of AZ91 D alloy were carried out on a TOYO BD-350V5 cold chamber die casting machine incorporated with a self-improved TOYO vacuum system. It was found that the vacuum pressure in the die cavity at the beginning of mold filling increases with the increase of slow shot speed, following a cubic polynomial curve, resulting in a decline in the porosity-reduction ability of vacuum assistance with the increase of slow shot speed. The externally solidified crystal(ESC) contents in conventional and vacuum die castings behave similar against the slow shot speed. The tensile properties of vacuum die castings were strongly influenced by the ESC content at relative low slow shot speeds. With the increase of slow shot speed, the influence of the gas porosity level in vacuum die castings would get prominent. 展开更多

The AMSR2 microwave radiometer is the main payload of the GCOM-W1 satellite, launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in 2012. Based on the pre-launch information extraction algorithm, the AMSR2 enables remote monitoring of geophysical parameters such as sea surface temperature, wind speed, water vapor, and liquid cloud water content. However, rain alters the properties of atmospheric scattering and absorption, which contaminates the brightness temperatures measured by the microwave radiometer. Therefore,it is difficult to retrieve AMSR2-derived sea surface wind speeds under rainfall conditions. Based on microwave radiative transfer theory, and using AMSR2 L1 brightness temperature data obtained in August 2012 and NCEP reanalysis data,we studied the sensitivity of AMSR2 brightness temperatures to rain and wind speed, from which a channel combination of brightness temperature was established that is insensitive to rainfall, but sensitive to wind speed. Using brightness temperatures obtained with the proposed channel combination as input parameters,in conjunction with HRD wind field data, and adopting multiple linear regression and BP neural network methods,we established an algorithm for hurricane wind speed retrieval under rainfall conditions. The results showed that the standard deviation and relative error of retrievals, obtained using the multiple linear regression algorithm, were 3.1 m/s and 13%,respectively. However, the standard deviation and relative error of retrievals obtained using the BP neural network algorithm were better(2.1 m/s and 8%,respectively). Thus, the results of this paper preliminarily verified the feasibility of using microwave radiometers to extract sea surface wind speeds under rainfall conditions. 展开更多

The dynamic response of an axially traveling laminated composite beam is investigated analytically, with special consideration to natural frequencies, complex mode functions and critical speeds of the system. The equation of motion for a symmetrically laminated system, which is in the form of a continuous gyroscopic system,is considered;the equation of motion is not discretized — no spatial mode function is assumed. This leads to analytical expressions for the complex mode functions and critical speeds.A parametric study has been conducted in order to highlight the effects of system parameters on the above-mentioned vibration characteristics of the system. 展开更多

In grassland ecosystems, the aerodynamic roughness(Z0)and frictional wind speed(u*)contribute to the aerodynamic impedance of the grassland canopy. Thus, they are often used in the studies of wind erosion and evapotranspiration. However, the effect of wind speed and grazing measures on the aerodynamic impedance of the grassland canopy has received less analysis. In this study,we monitored wind speeds at multiple heights in grazed and grazing-prohibited grasslands for 1 month in 2021,determined the transit wind speed at 2.0 m height by comparing wind speed differences at the same height in both grasslands, and divided these transit wind speeds at intervals of 2.0 m/s to analyze the effect of the transit wind speed on the relationship among Z0,u*,and wind speed within the grassland canopy. The results showed that dividing the transit wind speeds into intervals has a positive effect on the logarithmic fit of the wind speed profile. After dividing the transit wind speeds into intervals, the wind speed at 0.1 m height(V0.1)gradually decreased with the increase of Z0,exhibiting three distinct stages:a sharp change zone,a steady change zone, and a flat zone;while the overall trend of u*increased first and then decreased with the increase of V0.1.Dividing the transit wind speeds into intervals improved the fitting relationship between Z0 and V0.1 and changed their fitting functions in grazed and grazing-prohibited grasslands.According to the computational fluid dynamic results,we found that the number of tall-stature plants has a more significant effect on windproof capacity than their height. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between wind speed and the aerodynamic impedance of vegetation in grassland environments. 展开更多

During high power disk laser welding, the high-speed photography was used to measure the dynamic images of the laser-induced plume at different laser welding speeds. Various plume features (area, height and brightness) were extracted from the images by the color space clustering algorithm. Combined with observation on the surface and the cross sections of welding samples, the effect of welding speed on welding stability was analyzed. From the experimental results, it was found that these features of plume could reflect the welding state. Thus changes of the plume features corresponded to different welding speeds, which was helpful for monitoring the laser welding stability. 展开更多

Particulate matters(PMs) emitted by automobile exhaust contribute to a significant fraction of the global PMs. Extractive atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry(EAPCI-MS) was developed to explore the molecular dependence of PMs collected from exhaust gases produced at different vehicle engine speeds. The mass spectral fingerprints of the organic compounds embedded in differentially sized PMs(e.g., 0.22–0.45, 0.45–1.00, 1.00–2.00, 2.00–3.00, 3.00–5.00, and 5.00–10.00 μm) generated at different engine speeds(e.g., 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 r/min) were chemically profiled in the mass range of mass to charge ratio(m/z) 50–800. Organic compounds, including alcohols, aldehydes, and esters, were detected in all the PMs tested, with varied concentration levels for each individual PM sample. At relatively low engine speeds(≤ 1500 r/min), the total amount of organic species embedded in PMs of 0.22–1.00 μm was greater than in PMs of other sizes, while more organic species were found in PMs of5.00–10.00 μm at high engine speeds(≥ 3000 r/min), indicating that the organic compounds distributed in different sizes of PMs strongly correlated with the engine speed. The experimental data showed that the EAPCI-MS technique enables molecular characterization of PMs in exhaust, revealing the chemical dependence of PMs on the engine speeds(i.e., the combustion conditions) of automobiles. 展开更多

The microhardness curve trend and its relationships with microstructure and misorientation were analyzed to enhance the comprehension of the microstructure and mechanical property of micro-areas in Ti6 Al4 V laser-welded joints with different welding speeds. The microhardness measured on the fusion line(H_m) is the highest from the weld center to the base metal. H_m increases with increasing weld width in a welded joint and increasing degree of the non-uniformity in all studied welded joints. The microhardness decreases from the weld metal to the base metal with decreasing amount of martensite α’ and increasing amount of original α phase. When the microstructure is mainly composed of martensite α’, the microhardness changes with the cooling rate, grain size of the martensite, and peak values of the fraction of misorientation angle of the martensite in a wide weld metal zone or weld center at different welding speeds, whereas the difference is small in a narrow weld metal zone. 展开更多

In order to address the issues of traditional resampling algorithms involving computational accuracy and efficiency in rolling element bearing fault diagnosis, an equal division impulse-based(EDI-based) resampling algorithm is proposed. First, the time marks of every rising edge of the rotating speed pulse and the corresponding amplitudes of faulty bearing vibration signal are determined. Then, every adjacent the rotating pulse is divided equally, and the time marks in every adjacent rotating speed pulses and the corresponding amplitudes of vibration signal are obtained by the interpolation algorithm. Finally, all the time marks and the corresponding amplitudes of vibration signal are arranged and the time marks are transformed into the angle domain to obtain the resampling signal. Speed-up and speed-down faulty bearing signals are employed to verify the validity of the proposed method, and experimental results show that the proposed method is effective for diagnosing faulty bearings. Furthermore, the traditional order tracking techniques are applied to the experimental bearing signals, and the results show that the proposed method produces higher accurate outcomes in less computation time. 展开更多

A multiscale simulation has been performed to determine the effect of the cutting speed on the deformation mechanism and cutting forces in nanometric cutting of single crystal copper. The multiscale simulation model, which links the finite element method and the molecular dynamics method, captures the atomistic mechanisms during nanometric cutting from the free surface without the computational cost of full atomistic simulations. Simulation results show the material deformation mechanism of single crystal copper greatly changes when the cutting speed exceeds the material static propagation speed of plastic wave. At such a high cutting speed, the average magnitudes of tangential and normal forces increase rapidly. In addition, the variation of strain energy of work material atoms in different cutting speeds is investigated. 展开更多

Repeated train passages bring detrimental effects on train operations, especially at high speeds. In this study,a computational model consisting of moving train vehicles, track structure, and track foundation is used to investigate the stress distribution in the track substructure and underlying soil, particularly when the train speed approaches the critical speed via 2.5D finite element method. The numerical model has been validated by in-situ test results from a ballasted high-speed railway. The computational results reveal that the substructure is shown to be effective in reducing the stresses transmitted to the ground;however,a simple Boussinesq approximation is proved to be inaccurate because it cannot properly take account of the effect of multi-layered substructures and train speeds. It is acceptable to assume a simplified smooth track in the analysis model for determining the maximum stresses and displacements for a low-speed railway(≤100 km/h)but,for a high-speed one,the dynamic amplification effect of track irregularities must also be considered in subgrade design.Analysis of the stress paths revealed that the load speed and track irregularity increase the likelihood of failure for the subgrade;track irregularity can induce many times of principal stress rotations even under a simple single moving load. 展开更多
