A trial sensor using an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT), which can generate the SH-mode plate wave propagating in the circumferential direction, has been developed to realize this objective. It consists of a circulating electromagnetic induction coil around the pipe and many permanent magnets arranged on the surface of the pipe in the circumferential direction. It is postulated that the intensity of the SH-mode plate wave propagating in the circumferential direction is dependent on any defects in the circumferential direction. A resonance method was then utilized to obtain a stronger received signal. As a result, it was confirmed that the resonance status can be detected. The relationship between the signal intensity and the pipe thickness was then evaluated. It was confirmed that the wall thickness of about 20% can be detected under a static condition. Finally, a moving test has been executed by using an axially traveling device manufactured by trial. The test pipes with different sizes of drilled holes were prepared. The change in the received signal intensity according to different sizes of the drilled holes was successfully detected.展开更多

By a careful design of the geometric configuration, electromagnetic acoustic transducers(EMATs) have the capability to generate a wide range of guided wave modes, such as Lamb waves and shear-horizontal(SH) waves in plates. However, the performance of EMATs is influenced by their parameters. To evaluate the performance of periodic permanent magnet(PPM) EMATs, a distributed-line-source model is developed to calculate the angular acoustic field cross-section in the far-field. Numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the performance of such EMATs with different geometric parameters, such as period and number of magnet arrays, and inner and outer coil widths. Such parameters have a great influence on the directivity of the generated SH0 waves that arises mainly in the amplitude and width of both main and side lobes. According to the numerical analysis, these parameters are optimized to obtain better directivity. Optimized PPM EMATs are designed and used for NDT of strip plates. Experimental results show that the lateral boundary of the strip plate has no perceivable influence on SHO-wave propagation, thus validating their used in NDT. The proposed model predicts the radiation pattern ofPPM EMATs, and can be used for their parameter optimization.展开更多

In this paper, an experimental study on the uplift pressures of waves on a horizontal plate is conducted by use of a series of model tests. Detailed analysis has been given to the formation mechanism of uplift pressures of waves. It is considered that the impact pressure intensity is mainly affected by geometrical factors (tangential angle of waves), dynamic factors (wave height, wave velocity, etc.) and air cushion. Based on the test results, an equation for calculation of the maximum uplift pressure intensity of waves on a plate is presented. A large quantity of test data shows good agreement of the present equation with the test results.展开更多

In linear potential-flow theory, with the aid of angular eigenfunction expansions, the diffraction potentials can be expressed by the Bessel functions. A system of simultaneous equations is derived by matching the velocity and the pressure between the open-water and the platecovered regions, while incorporating the edge conditions of the plate. Then the complex nested series are simplified by utilizing the orthogonality of the vertical eigenfunctions in the open-water region. Numerical computations are presented to investigate the effects of different physical quantities, such as the thickness of the plate, Young’s modulus, the ratios of the densities and of the layer depths, on the dispersion relations of the flexural-gravity waves for the two-layer fluid. Rapid convergence of the method is observed, but is slower at higher wave frequency. At high frequency, it is found that there is some energy transferred from the interfacial mode to the surface mode.展开更多

Classical leveling theories merely solve the problem of longitudinal waves, while no well accepted method can be employed for transverse waves. In order to investigate the essential deformation law of leveling for plates with transverse waves, a 2.5-dimensional (2.5- D) analytical approach was proposed. In this model, the plate was transversely divided into some strips with equal width; the strips are considered to be in the state of plane strain and each group of adjacent strips are assumed to be deformation compatible under stress. After calculation, the bending deformation of each strip and the leveling effect of overall plate were obtained by comprehensNe consideration of various strips along with the width. Bending of roller is a main approach to eliminate the transverse waves, which is widely accepted by the industry, but the essential effect of bending of roller on the deformation of plates and the calculation of bending of roller are unknown. According to the 2.5-D analytical model, it can be found that, for plates, it is neutral plane offsetting and middle plane elongation or contraction under inner stress that can effectively improve plate shape. Taking double side waves as an example, the appropriate values of bending of roller were obtained by the 2.5-D analytical model related to different initial unevenness, which was applicable to the current on-line adjusting of bending of roller in rolling industry.展开更多

(2000) for the study of the hydroelastic response of mat-type VLFS in head seas. However, their main emphasis is on the effect of edge conditions and they assume that the plate is of a semi-infinite length. In reality, the plate is of finite length. For consideration of the finite length effect, the reflection and transmission from the other end must be considered. The effect of this reflection and transmission on the hydroelastic response of VLFS is of interest for practical application. Furthermore, the physical meaning of the new inner product was not given in their paper. In this paper, it is shown that the new inner product can he derived from the governing equation and the bottom boundary conditions. Then the same eigen-function expansion method is adopted for the study of the hydroelastic response of an elastic plate of finite length in surface waves. Detailed comparisons are made between the present finite length model and the semi-infinite model and between the present model predictions and the experimental results. It is found that that the finite length effect is significant and the accuracy of present model is higher than the semi-infinite model. Furthermore, a new phenomenon, which is not mentioned in Sahoo et al. (2000), is found. Taht is, for larger L/h ratios, the reflection and transmission coefficients will oscillate with the non-dimensional parameter k(0) h. Further study is needed for full understanding of this phenomenon.展开更多

The volume of fluid (VOF) method was employed to capture the free surface in the time domain. The validation of the present numerical model was performed by comparing with both the analytical and experimental results. The effects of the spacing between two plates and the configuration of stepped bottom on the hydrodynamic characteristics, such as reflection and transmission coefficients, viscous dissipation ratio, and relative wave height between the plates (termed as trapped wave energy), were examined. Moreover, the nonlinear effects of the incident wave height on the hydrodynamic characteristics were addressed as well. The results show that the step configuration can be tuned for efficient-performance of wave damping, and the optimum configurations of the step length B, the step height h1 and the spacing b, separately equaling λ/4, 3h/4, and 0.05h (λ and h are the wavelength and the water depth, respectively), are recommended for the trapping of wave energy.展开更多

In general, the cumulative second-harmonic generation of a dispersive guided wave propagation does not occur. However, the present paper shows that the second-harmonic of Lamb wave propagation arising from the nonlinear interaction of the partial bulk acoustic waves and the restriction of the three boundaries of the solid plates does have a cumulative growth effect if some conditions are satisfied. Through boundary condition and initial condition of excitation, the analytical expression of cumulative second-harmonic of Lamb waves propagation is determined. Numerical results show the cumulative effect of Lamb waves on second-harmonic field patterns.展开更多

By using the matched eigenfunction expansion method and a least square approach, the analytical solutions are sought for the established boundary value problem. The effects of the incidence angle, location of step, depth ratio of deep to shallow waters, and column width between two plates, on the reflection coefficients, the horizontal wave forces acting on the two plates, and the mean surface elevation between the two plates, are numerically examined under a variety of wave conditions. The results show that the existence of the stepped bottom between two plates considerably impacts the hydrodynamic performances of the present system. It is found that the effect of stepped bottom on the reflection coefficient of the present two-plate structure is evident only with waves of the low dimensionless frequency. Moreover, the influence of the step location on the hydrodynamic performance of the present two-plate structure is slight if the step is placed in between the two plates.展开更多

The coupled wave equations and heat conduction equation are solved by the Legendre orthogonal polynomial series expansion approach. The validity of the method is confirmed through a comparison. The dispersion curves of thermal modes and elastic modes are illustrated simultaneously. Dispersion curves of the corresponding pure elastic plate are also shown to analyze the influence of the thermoelasticity on elastic modes. The displacement and temperature distributions are shown to discuss the differences between the elastic modes and thermal modes.展开更多

The studied two-phase composites (BaTiO3-CoFe2O4 and PZT-5H-Terfenol-D) possess the piezoelectric phase (BaTiO3, PZT-5H) and the piezomagnetic phase (CoFe2O4, Terfenol-D). The mechanical, electrical, and magnetic boundary conditions applied to both the upper and lower free surfaces of the plate are as follows: the mechanically free, electrically closed, and magnetically closed surfaces. As a result, the fundamental modes of two new dispersive SH-waves recently discovered in book [Zakharenko, A.A. (2012) ISBN: 978-3-659-30943-4] were numerically calculated. It was found that for large values of normalized plate thickness kd (k and d are the wavenumber and plate half-thickness, respectively) the velocities of both the new dispersive SH-waves can approach the nondispersive SH-SAW velocity of the piezoelectric exchange surface Melkumyan (PEESM) wave. It was also discussed that for small values of kd, the experimental study of the new dispersive SH-waves can be preferable in comparison with the nondispersive PEESM wave. The obtained results can be constructive for creation of various technical devices based on (non)dispersive SH-waves and two-phase smart materials. The new dispersive SH-waves propagating in the plates can be also employed for nondestructive testing and evaluation. Also, it is obvious that the plates can be used in technical devices instead of the corresponding bulk samples for further miniaturization.展开更多

Further study is needed for full understanding of this phenomenon.

文摘Shock wave is emitted into the plate and sphere when a sphere hypervelocity impacts onto a thin plate. The fragmentation and phase change of the material caused by the propagation and unloading of shock wave could result in the formation of debris cloud eventually.Propagation models are deduced based on one-dimensional shock wave theory and the geometry of sphere, which uses elliptic equations(corresponding to ellipsoid equations in physical space)to describe the propagation of shock wave and the rarefaction wave. The“Effective thickness”is defined as the critical plate thickness that ensures the rarefaction wave overtake the shock wave at the back of the sphere. The“Effective thickness”is directly related to the form of the debris cloud. The relation of the“Effective thickness”and the“Optimum thickness”is also discussed. The impacts of Al spheres onto Al plates are simulated within SPH to verify the propagation models and associated theories. The results show that the wave fronts predicted by the propagation models are closer to the simulation result at higher impact velocity. The curvatures of the wave fronts decrease with the increase of impact velocities. The predicted“Effective thickness”is consistent with the simulation results. The analysis about the shock wave propagation and unloading in this paper can provide a new sight and inspiration for the quantitative study of hypervelocity impact and space debris protection.

文摘To evaluate the trapped wave energy and energy loss, the problem of wave scattering by twin fixed vertical surface- piercing plates over a stepped bottom is numerically simulated using the open source package OpenFOAM and the associated toolbox waves2Foam. The results show that the step configuration can be tuned for efficient-performance of wave damping, and the optimum configurations of the step length B, the step height h1 and the spacing b, separately equaling λ/4, 3h/4, and 0.05h (λ and h are the wavelength and the water depth, respectively), are recommended for the trapping of wave energy.

文摘The interaction between wave and horizontal and vertical plates is investigated by the boundary element method, and the relations of wave exciting force with plate thickness, submergence and length are obtained. It is found that: 1) The efficient wave exciting force exists while plate submergence is less than 0.5 m, and the plate is very thin with order O(0.005 m). 2) The maximum heave wave exciting force exists, and it is the main factor for surface and submerged horizontal plate while the roll force can be ignored. 3) The maximum sway wave exciting force exists, it is the main factor for surface or submerged vertical plate, and the roll force is about 20 times of horizontal plate.

文摘The physical process of cumulative second-harmonic generation of Lamb waves propagating in a two-layered solid plate is presented by using the second-order perturbation and the technique of nonlinear reflection of acoustic waves at an interface. Numerical results show the cumulative effect of Lamb waves on second-harmonic field patterns.

文摘Based on linear water-wave theory, this study investigated the scattering of oblique incident water waves by two unequal surface-piercing thin vertical rigid plates with stepped bottom topography. Moreover, the influence of the step location on the hydrodynamic performance of the present two-plate structure is slight if the step is placed in between the two plates.

文摘In this paper, the propagation of guided thermoelastic waves in laminated orthotropic plates subjected to stress-free, isothermal boundary conditions is investigated in the context of the Green-Naghdi (GN) generalized thermoelastic theory (without energy dissipation). The displacement and temperature distributions are shown to discuss the differences between the elastic modes and thermal modes.
文摘It is theoretically considered the propagation (first evidence) of new dispersive shear-horizontal (SH) acoustic waves in the piezoelectromagnetic (magnetoelectroelastic) composite plates. Also, it is obvious that the plates can be used in technical devices instead of the corresponding bulk samples for further miniaturization.

文摘The interaction between structure and wave is a typical phenomenon in naval architecture and ocean engineering. In this paper, numerical simulation is carried out to study the interaction between a two-dimensional submerged, fixed, horizontal rigid plate and solitary wave with our in-house meshless particle CFD solver MLParticle-SJTU.First,the in-house CFD solver is verified by experimental results conducted at the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering,Dalian University of Technology.During the verification, the plate is submerged under water and the solitary wave with a given amplitude is generated by a piston-type wave maker.Free surface elevation of the wave and the pressure impacting on the plate is recorded and compared with experimental data respectively. The predicted pressure and surface elevation agree well with the experimental results. Then in order to further investigate factors affecting wave-structure interaction, wave height, submerged depth and plate length are analyzed.

文摘Guided waves in the multilayered one-dimensional quasi-crystal plates are, respectively, investigated in the context of the Bak and elasto-hydrodynamic models.Dispersion curves and phonon and phason displacements are calculated using the Legendre polynomial method.Wave characteristics in the context of these two models are analyzed in detail. Results show that the phonon-phason coupling effects on the first two layers are the same at low frequencies;but, they are more significant on the first layer than those on the second layer at high frequencies. These obtained results lay the theoretical basis of guided-wave nondestructive test on multilayered quasi-crystal plates.
