Catalytic oxidation of methane for methanol production over copper sepiolite:Effect of noble metals

The direct oxidation of methane to methanol(DOMM) has been recognized as a significant technology for efficiently utilizing low-concentration coalbed methane(LCMM) and supplying liquid fuel.Herein,the noble metals(Pt,Pd and Ru) modified Cu/alkalized sepiolite(CuX/SEPA) catalysts were prepared and used for the DOMM in a gas-phase system at low temperatures.The CuRu/SEPA exhibited the highest methanol production of 53 μmol·g^(-1)·h^(-1) and methanol selectivity of 90% under the optimal reaction conditions.Various characterizations demonstrated that the addition of Ru promoted the formation of Cu^(2+)and the contraction of Cu—Si/Al bonds to reduce the distance between framework Al atoms of SEPA to further generate more Al pairs,which facilitated the formation of reactive dicopper species([Cu_(2)O]^(2+)or [Cu_(2)O_(2)]^(2+)).Investigation of the reaction mechanism revealed that [Cu_(2)O]^(2+) or [Cu_(2)O_(2)]^(2+) species could adsorb and activate methane to form CH_(3)O^(*) species and ultimately generated methanol with the assistance of water. 展开更多

Ag2O-TiO 2/sepiolite heterostructure composites were synthesized by a simple two-step method at low temperatures(100–450 °C). Acid red G aqueous solution and gaseous formaldehyde were chosen as model organic pollutants to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared composites. The results showed that the Ag2O-TiO 2/sepiolite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity over pure Ag2O-TiO 2,TiO 2/sepiolite,and Ag2O/sepiolite under visible-light irradiation(λ 420 nm). The excellent photocatalytic efficiency of these composites can be ascribed to the synergistic effect between the heterojunction and the porous structure of the clay layers,which induced high adsorption and efficient charge separation. In addition,the active species involved in the degradation reaction have been investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy and quenching experiments. A possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of acid red G dye by the Ag2O-TiO 2/sepiolite composite is also discussed. 展开更多

The effects of immobilization remediation of Cd-contaminated soils using sepiolite on soil pH, enzyme activities and microbial communities, TCLP-Cd (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure-Cd) concentration, and spinach (Spinacia oleracea) growth and Cd uptake and accumulation were investigated. Results showed that the addition of sepiolite could increase soil pH, while the TCLP-Cd concentration in soil was decreased with increasing sepiolite. The changes of soil enzyme activities and bacteria number indicated that a certain metabolic recovery occurred after the sepiolite treatments, and spinach shoot biomass increased by 58.5%-65.5% in comparison with the control group when the concentration of sepiolite was ~ 10 g/kg. However, the Cd concentrations in the shoots and roots of spinach decreased with an increase in the rate of sepiolite, experiencing 38.4%-59.1% and 12.6%--43.6% reduction, respectively, in contrast to the control. The results indicated that sepiolite has the potential for success on a field scale in reducing Cd entry into the food chain. 展开更多

In this work, the use of sepiolite for the removal of carbon dioxide from a carbon dioxide/methane mixture by a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process has been researched. Adsorption equilibrium and kinetics have been measured in a fixed-bed, and the adsorption equilibrium parameters of carbon dioxide and methane on sepiolite have been obtained. A model based on the LDF approximation has been employed to simulate the fixed-bed kinetics, using the Langmuir equation to describe the adsorption equilibrium isotherm. The functioning of a PSA cycle for separating carbon dioxide/methane mixtures using sepiolite as adsorbent has also been studied. The experimental results were compared with the ones predicted by the model adapted to a PSA system. Methane with purity higher than 97% can be obtained from feeds containing carbon dioxide with concentrations ranging from 34% to 56% with the proposed PSA cycle. These results suggest that sepiolite is an adsorbent with good properties for its employment in a PSA cycle for carbon dioxide removal from landfill gases. 展开更多

Sepiolite@LDH(Sep@LDH)composites were designed and prepared based on the assembly of layered double hydroxides(LDH)on acidified sepiolites(Sep)for the simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange(MO)and methylene blue(MB).The structure,morphology,texture,optical properties,and photocatalytic performance of the prepared Sep@LDH were studied in detail.Among the Sep@LDH composites,Sep4@LDH(4.0 g Sep)exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity under visible‐light irradiation,which could be attributed to its large surface area,high crystallinity,and plentiful active sites on its surface.The photodegradation of the dyes followed a pseudo first‐order kinetic model(Langmuir‐Hinshelwood model),indicating that the copious and homogeneous active sites on the surface of the composites contributed to the high photocatalytic activity.The photodegradation mechanism was studied by examining the active species(^-OH,h+,and·O2^-anions)using appropriate scavengers.It was found that·OH radicals played a critical role in the photocatalytic process of MO and MB,where the generation of·OH radicals occurred on the electron/hole(e^-/h+)pairs on the surface of the Sep@LDH composites. 展开更多

A novel ternary sepiolite/Cu_2O/Cu(SCC) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot method. The Cu_2O/Cu nanoparticles in the SCC nanocomposite are well dispersed on the sepiolite surface. It exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance in the degradation of congo red(CR), remarkably superior to that of Cu_2O or Cu_2O/Cu nanoparticles. Elemental copper in the SCC serves as a good electron acceptor to promote the transfer of photo-generated electrons in Cu_2O and suppress the recombination of the photo-generated electrons and holes of the composite. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency is attributed to the synergistic effect of sepiolite and Cu_2O/Cu. This type of SCC nanocomposites is a promising candidate as photocatalytic material for environmental protection. 展开更多

The adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of modified sepiolite as an adsorbent to recover Pd(Ⅱ) from acidic solutions were studied. The Pd(Ⅱ) adsorption properties were analyzed through isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models. In addition, SEM-EDS, TEM and XPS were applied to investigating the Pd(Ⅱ) adsorption mechanisms onto modified sepiolite. The equilibrium data were well fitted to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum Pd(Ⅱ) adsorption capacity of 322.58 mg/g at 30 ℃. The kinetic data could be satisfactorily simulated by the pseudosecond order model, indicating that the rate-controlling step was chemical adsorption. 99% of Pd(Ⅱ) could be recovered using 1 g/L modified sepiolite when initial concentration of Pd(Ⅱ) was 100 mg/L. The results of reusability studies indicated the modified sepiolite had an acceptable stability and reusability. This study indicated that the modified sepiolite might be an efficient and cost-effective material for Pd(Ⅱ) recovery. 展开更多

Sodium-treated sepiolite(Na Sep)-supported transition metal catalysts(TM/Na Sep;TM = Cu, Fe, Ni, Mn, and Co) were synthesized via a rotary evaporation method. Physicochemical properties of the as-synthesized samples were characterized by means of various techniques, and their catalytic activities for HCHO(0.2%) oxidation were evaluated. Among the samples, Cu/Na Sep exhibited superior performance, and complete HCHO conversion was achieved at 100 ℃(GHSV = 240000 m L/(g·h)). Additionally, the sample retained good catalytic activity during a 42 h stability test. A number of factors, including elevated acidity, the abundance of oxygen species, and favorable low-temperature reducibility, were responsible for the excellent catalytic activity of Cu/Na Sep. According to the results of the in-situ DRIFTS characterization, the HCHO oxidation mechanism was as follows:(i) HCHO was rapidly decomposed into dioxymethylene(DOM) species on the Cu/Na Sep surface;(ii) DOM was then immediately converted to formate species;(iii) the resultant formate species were further oxidized to carbonates;(iv) the carbonate species were eventually converted to CO2 and H2O. 展开更多

Three different kinds of sepiolite(Type A, Type B and Sepiolite fiber) were processed by calcination and analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis(TG), X-ray diffraction diffractometer(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), BET(specific surface area from N2 adsorption isotherms), mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP), and infrared spectroscopic analysis(IR), respectively. The results show that the adsorption performance of sepiolite can be changed by calcination and environment temperatures, especially for calcination. The adsorption capacity of sepiolite fiber is bigger than that of Type A and B, and adsorption capacity of each sepiolite to sulfate is smaller than that of the chloride ions. Especially, the maximum value for adsorption of the sepiolite fibers, calcined at 600 ℃ and water bath at 60 ℃, to chlorine ion and sulfate are 5.95 and 5.71 mg/g, respectively(mg/g : the ions quantity adsorbed by a unit of sepiolite weight). The minimum adsorption of calcined sepiolite fiber to sulfate ions increased from 5.02 to 5.55 mg/g. While microstructure analysis of sepiolite by TG indicated that its structure was, for temperature not exceeding 700 ℃, was not changed significantly. Sepiolite has a porous structure, especially for sepiolite fiber, which can be observed by SEM. BET indicates that sepiolite fiber has a larger pore volume than others and this can be increased by calcination. IR shows that the adsorption of sepiolite to Cl-and SO42- belongs to physical absorption, instead of chemisorption. 展开更多

The heat-activated sepiolite,which was prepared using sepiolite by thermal treatment at different temperatures,was used as an absorbent for the removal of rhodamine B(RhB) from aqueous solutions.The structure and morphology of the as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) techniques,respectively.The adsorption capacity of RhB onto the heat-activated sepiolite has been examined with pH,adsorbent dosage,contact time,initial dye concentration,and temperature.Kinetic studies showed that the equilibrium was attained within 40 min,and the kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.Besides,the experimental data(R 2 〉0.999) fitted the Freundlich model better than the Langmuir model.The as-prepared sample showed higher adsorption capacity(8.33 mg/g) for the removal of RhB than that of sepiolite,which could be attributed to more adsorption sites caused by appropriate heat treatment.The adsorbent can be well regenerated by calcination at 400 ℃ for 2 h and regenerated sepiolite did not exhibited significant loss of adsorption activity after five recycles. 展开更多

A cube-like Ag@Ag Cl-doped TiO2/sepiolite(denoted Ag@Ag Cl–TiO2/sepiolite) was successfully synthesized via a novel method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy were performed to determine the structure and physicochemical properties of Ag@Ag Cl–TiO2/sepiolite. SEM micrographs revealed that Ag@Ag Cl nanoparticles and TiO2 film are well deposited on the surface of tube-like sepiolite. As a result, Ag@Ag Cl–TiO2/sepiolite exhibits a red shift relative to TiO2/sepiolite. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrated that the dosage of catalysts plays an important role during photocatalysis. The photoelectrochemical activities of Ag@Ag Cl–TiO2/sepiolite and TiO2/sepiolite were also investigated. Photocurrent responses confirmed that the ability of Ag@Ag Cl–TiO2/sepiolite to separate photo-generated electron–hole pairs is stronger than that of TiO2/sepiolite. Methylene Blue degradation is also improved under alkaline conditions and visible light irradiation because more UOH is produced by visible light excitation.This excellent catalytic ability is mainly attributed to the formed Ag nanoparticles and the Schottky barrier at the Ag/TiO2 interface. Active species analysis indicated that UO2-and h+are implicated as active species in photocatalysis. Therefore, catalysts are excited to produce abundant electron–hole pairs after they absorb photons in photocatalysis. 展开更多

Shape-memory poly(p-dioxanone)–poly(e-caprolactone)/sepiolite(PPDO–PCL/OSEP) nanocomposites with different OSEP nanofiber loading were fabricated by chain-extending the PPDO-diol and PCL/OSEP precursors. The precursors and the composites were characterized by1 H NMR, FT-IR, GPC, SEM and TEM.The results demonstrate that a part of PCL segments grafted on the surface of OSEP and composites display a fine dispersion of OSEP fiber in nanoscale with low OSEP content. The shape memory effect(SME) was evaluated by DMA, the results reveal that the PPDO–PCL/OSEP nanocomposites exhibit desirable shape-memory performance. In order to explore the internal curing mechanism of sepiolite in cement-based materials,the effects of sepiolite on the water consumption of standard consistency,setting time,viscosity,strength,pore structure characteristics,micro-hardness characteristics and two-dimensional surface characteristics of cement paste were studied,respectively.The experimental results show that the water consumption of standard consistency increases linearly with the increase of sepiolite content.The setting time and viscosity are also lengthened and increased with the addition of sepiolite,respectively.When the content of sepiolite exceeds 5%,the strength of the specimen increases significantly.The BET results show that the pore structure of the interfacial transition zone(ITZ)in hardened cement paste(HCP)with sepiolite is optimized after curing for28 d and its pore volume content with below 10 nm is decreased,especially for the specimen with a lower watercement ratio.The characteristics of microhardness and strength of specimens have the same law.Backscattered electron image(BSE-IA)shows that the ITZ of the specimen with sepiolite is denser and the unhydrated cement particles are less than the reference specimen. 展开更多

This work aims to investigate the efficiency of Fariman sepiolite from Iran as an adsorbent to remove Cd from aqueous solutions. The effects of different experimental factors such as the initial Cd concentration, contact time and the sorbent dose were investigated through a series of batch adsorption experiments. The results show that the adsorption capacity of sepiolite for Cd increases with the contact time, the initial concentration of Cd solutions and the sorbent dose. Sorption of Cd by Fariman sepiolite is rapid within the first hour of the experiment and then slowly increases until a pseudo equilibrium is approached at 8 h. The results also show that the time-dependent Cd sorption data are better described with pseudo second-order (7〉0.999) than that of pseudo first-order (r2〉0.971) kinetic model. Equilibrium isotherm studies show that the experimental data are better correlated by the Freundlich adsorption isotherm (7〉0.995) than the Langmuir (P〉0.825). It is suggested that both adsorption and cation exchange reactions are responsible for the sorption of Cd by the sepiolite, and the mineral has a very good potential to remove Cd from aqueous solutions. 展开更多

In this work, CO_2 methanation has been investigated over Ru-based catalysts.The effects of promoters on the activity, selectivity and reduction properties of the Ru/sepiolitecatalyst were analyzed by kinetic and thermodynamic methods. The catalysts were characterized bymeans of TPD, and the results revealed that the addition of Mo, Mn or Co improved the properties ofthe Ru/sepiolite catalyst.
