The vertical heterogeneity of the pore structure in deep coal seams with varying ash yields is a key control for coalbed methane storage and producibility;however, its specific impact on gas adsorption is not clearly defined. The focus of this study is the No.8 coal seam of the Carboniferous Benxi Formation in the Central-Eastern Ordos Basin.By integrating microscopic identification, proximate analysis, gas adsorption(CO_(2),N_(2),and CH_(4)),and the multifractal theory,we quantitatively characterized the nanopore structure(micropores<2 nm and mesopores 2 nm-100 nm)of coal reservoirs with varying ash yields. The results indicate that(1)ash yield is the primary factor that controls the vertical evolution of pore structures in coal seams. In low-ash yield coal seams, the extent of thermal evolution and ash yield jointly constrain the heterogeneity of pore size distribution. In mediumto high-ash yield coal seams, the heterogeneity of pore structure and pore size distribution are predominantly constrained by ash yield.(2)As the ash yield vertically increases, the mesoporous pore volume and specific surface area initially decrease and subsequently increase, while the contribution of micropores to both pore volume and specific surface area continuously diminishes.Consequently, the total pore volume and specific surface area of the coal samples exhibit a two-stage reduction close to an ash yield threshold of approximately 20%.(3)Further,the Langmuir volume for CH_(4)adsorption sharply declines below the 20%threshold,followed by a gradual decrease;in contrast, the Langmuir pressure initially decreases and subsequently increases.Hence, the vertical increase in ash yield constrains the development of pore systems and diminishes pore connectivity, thereby reducing methane adsorption capacity and adversely affecting coalbed methane productivity.(4)Low-ash yield coal reservoirs are characterized by a rapid gas breakthrough and high productivity, whereas medium-ash yield coal reservoirs generally require prolonged depressurization to achieve peak gas production. These findings reveal that in medium-high rank coal, ash yield―and not thermal evolution―is the main factor that controls vertical pore evolution and methane adsorption efficiency. The quantitative ash yield threshold(20%)established in this study provides a practical criterion for evaluating reservoir quality and predicting vertical variations in gas storage potential in the Ordos Basin. 展开更多

In extremely close-distance coal seam(ECDCS)mining, section coal pillars remain after upper coal seam(UCS)extraction. Thus, for layout and support design of lower coal seam(LCS)mining roadways,it is critical to account for UCS goaf deterioration and residual coal pillar(RCP)-induced stress disturbance.Taking the 6.4 m layer spacing of ECDCS mining in Nanyangpo Coal Mine as a case study, this research aimed to determine the optimal layout and surrounding rock control method for the 24202-ventilation roadway in the RCP area.First, the challenges of roadway layout and support under RCP were clarified:three layout methods face distinct RCPinduced stress disturbances and goaf-related roof damage.A finite element model was established;the second invariant of deviatoric stress(J_(2))and horizontal stress index were introduced to analyze plastic zone and stress evolution after UCS mining. Results show that J_(2)distributes symmetrically, with its peak diffusing downward and attenuating in a“/”-shaped pattern.Six schemes were simulated to compare plastic zone distributions at different positions, revealing that the optimal layout consists of a roadway alignment with the RCP center.Based on roadway layout and roof conditions,a cooperative control scheme was proposed:deep, strong anchorage with long cables across the RCP,and shallow stable support with short bolts in the ECDCS.This scheme secures roof cables anchored to the UCS RCP roof to achieve cross-seam anchorage.On-site borehole peeping and loose circle tests confirm smooth surrounding rock hole walls and limited failure range.Specifically, surrounding rock deformation and roof separation were controlled within 200 mm and 80 mm,respectively, with stable bolt/cable support resistance. These results offer an innovative solution for roadway layout design and support strategies under RCP in ECDCS,with significant engineering application value. 展开更多

This study focuses on steeply inclined and extremely thick coal seams(SIETCS)characterized by immense thickness,a steep inclination of coal seams(87°),and high horizontal stress. The geological conditions and mining technology associated with SIETCS differ significantly from those of generally inclined coal seams, resulting in notable variations in roadway stress distributions. On SIETCS have predominantly examined the impact of rock layers flanking coal seams on rock bursts, with limited emphasis on SIETCS roadways. This study employs comprehensive methods, integrating numerical simulations, theoretical analyses, and field detections to investigate the stress distribution of SIETCS and the mechanisms of rock burst-induced vertical damage, subsequently validated in situ. The vertical stress in SIETCS is minimal, while horizontal stress is concentrated, leading to the formation of layered crack structures(LCS)that distribute above and below the roadways.Additionally, elastic energy significantly concentrates within the LCS.Axial dynamic compressive stress and vertical dynamic tensile stress along the LCS diminish its stability, readily triggering failure.During the LCS failure process, the stored energy is released, converting into kinetic energy required for coal body ejection after reaching the minimum energy for failure and dissipative energy, ultimately leading to rock burst-induced vertical damage in roadways.On-site detection and analysis within SIETCS,along with historical rock burst data, confirm the existence of LCS and its role in inducing vertical rock burst damage. This research establishes essential foundations for preventing rock bursts within SIETCS. 展开更多

Microstructural heterogeneity of low-permeability sandstone roofs of deep unmineable coal seams due to diagenesis significantly affects rock mechanical behavior, greatly impacting the sealing potential of in situ CO_(2) sequestration and the structural stability of the geological formation. However, little is known about how the microstructure of different mineral groups influences the multiscale mechanical behavior of deep sandstone. This study proposes a new method for quantitatively characterizing the multiscale mechanical properties of low-permeability sandstone and shows the mechanisms responsible for mechanical failure at the micro-,meso-,and macroscale.Triaxial compression tests and targeted nanoindentation tests were conducted to assess the micro-and macroscale mechanical properties of different types of sandstone. The micro-and macroscale experiments were coupled with numerical simulations of compression using a unified cohesive model based on Voronoi polygons to clarify the multiscale mechanical behavior. The results indicate that quartz, the primary mineral component of the sandstones examined, exhibits the strongest micromechanical properties, followed by feldspar, calcite, and clay minerals.Compared to polycrystalline quartz, monocrystalline quartz has a more stable microstructure and is mechanically stronger. The macro-mechanical properties of tight sandstone samples are weakened by increased microstructural inhomogeneity and larger grain size. This leads to a higher likelihood of splitting damage, characterized by a high degree of discrete and weak stress sensitivity. The major conclusion is that the positive rhythm lithofacies of medium-grained sandstone to siltstone are the most favorable for efficient CO_(2) sequestration in deep unmineable coal seams. 展开更多

A coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical cohesive phase-field model for hydraulic fracturing in deep coal seams is presented.Heat exchange between the cold fluid and the hot rock is considered, and the thermal contribution terms between the cold fluid and the hot rock are derived.Heat transfer obeys Fourier's law,and porosity is used to relate the thermodynamic parameters of the fracture and matrix domains. The net pressure difference between the fracture and the matrix is neglected, and thus the fluid flow is modeled by the unified fluid-governing equations. The evolution equations of porosity and Biot's coefficient during hydraulic fracturing are derived from their definitions. The effect of coal cleats is considered and modeled by Voronoi polygons, and this approach is shown to have high accuracy. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified by two sets of fracturing experiments in multilayer coal seams.Subsequently, the differences in fracture morphology, fluid pressure response, and fluid pressure distribution between direct fracturing of coal seams and indirect fracturing of shale interlayers are explored, and the effects of the cluster number and cluster spacing on fracture morphology for multi-cluster fracturing are also examined. The numerical results show that the proposed model is expected to be a powerful tool for the fracturing design and optimization of deep coalbed methane. 展开更多

The effectiveness of horizontal well multi-stage and multi-cluster fracturing in the fractured soft coal seam roof for coalbed methane(CBM) extraction has been demonstrated. This study focuses on the geological characteristics of the No.5 and No.11 coal seams in the Hancheng Block,Ordos Basin,China.A multi-functional,variable-size rock sample mold capable of securing the wellbore was developed to simulate layered formations comprising strata of varying lithology and thicknesses.A novel segmented fracturing simulation method based on an expandable pipe plugging technique is proposed.Large-scale true triaxial experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of horizontal wellbore location, perforation strategy, roof lithology, and vertical stress difference on fracture propagation, hydraulic energy variation, and the stimulated reservoir volume in horizontal wells targeting the soft coal seam roof. The results indicate that bilateral downward perforation with a phase angle of 120° optimizes hydraulic energy conservation, reduces operational costs, enhances fracture formation, and prevents fracturing failure caused by coal powder generation and migration. This perforation mode is thus considered optimal for coal seam roof fracturing. When the roof consists of sandstone, each perforation cluster tends to initiate a single dominant fracture with a regular geometry. In contrast, hydraulic fractures formed in mudstone roofs display diverse morphology.Due to its high strength, the sandstone roof requires significantly higher pressure for crack initiation and propagation, whereas the mudstone roof, with its strong water sensitivity, exhibits lower fracturing pressures. To mitigate inter-cluster interference, cluster spacing in mudstone roofs should be greater than that in sandstone roofs.Horizontal wellbore placement critically influences fracturing effectiveness. For indirect fracturing in sandstone roofs,an optimal position is 25 mm away from the lithological interface. In contrast, the optimal location for indirect fracturing in mudstone roofs is directly at the lithological interface with the coal seam.Higher vertical stress coefficients lead to increased fractu ring pressures and promote vertical,layer-penetrating fractures.A coefficient of 0.5 is identified as optimal for achieving effective indirect fracturing. This study provides valuable insights for the design and optimization of staged fracturing in horizontal wells targeting crushed soft coal seam roofs. 展开更多

The Mae Moh lignite-fired power plant is the only lignite-fired power plant and is the main point source of CO_(2)emissions in Thailand. This power plant uses lignite supplied from the Mae Moh lignite open-pit mine in the same vicinity.Carbon dioxide sequestration technologies can play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector, particularly in coal-fired power plants. This case study provides the first assessment of the potential for geological CO_(2)storage in coal seams at the Mae Moh coal mine in northern Thailand based on literature reviews. The Mae Moh Basin is a rift basin with a complex normal fault and contains coal seams at different depths separated by claystones. The geological setting potentially offers favorable conditions for the geological storage of CO_(2)in the coal seams through a combination of physical and chemical trapping mechanisms. The findings suggest that the Mae Moh coal mine is suitable for geological CO_(2)storage,especially in K and Q coal seams. However, leakage risks, storage capacity, and CO_(2)-water-coal reactions could be problematic. Thus, more subsurface studies should be carried out,and more detailed criteria should be considered before CO_(2)sequestration is undertaken in the Mae Moh coal mine. 展开更多

The geological structure of coal seams in China is remarkably varied and complex, with coalbed methane reservoirs marked by significant heterogeneity and low permeability, creating substantial technical challenges for efficient extraction. This study systematically investigates the impact of liquid nitrogen immersion(LNI)on the coal’s pore structure and its mechanism of enhancing permeability with a combination of quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)analysis, nitrogen adsorption experiments, and fractal dimension calculations. The results demonstrate that LNI can damage the coal’s pore structure and promote fracture expansion through thermal stress induction and moisture phase transformation, thereby enhancing the permeability of coal seams. The T_(2)peak area in the NMR experiments on coal samples subjected to LNI treatment shows a significant increase, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET)specific surface area decreases to 6.02 m^(2)/g,and the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda(BJH)total pore volume increases to 14.99 mm^(3)/g.Furthermore,changes in fractal dimensions(D_(1)rising from 2.804 to 2.837,and D_(2)falling from 2.757 to 2.594)indicate a notable enhancement in the complexity of the pore structure. With increasing LNI cycles, the adsorption capacity of the coal samples diminishes, suggesting a significant optimization of the pore structure. This optimization is particularly evident in the reconstruction of the micropore structure, which in turn greatly enhances the complexity and connectivity of the sample’s pore network. In summary, the study concludes that LNI technology can effectively improve the permeability of coal seams and the extraction efficiency of coalbed methane by optimizing the micropore structure and enhancing pore connectivity, which offers a potential method for enhancing the permeability of gas-bearing coal seams and facilitating the development and utilization of coalbed methane. 展开更多

Coalbed methane(CBM)is a significant factor in triggering coal and gas outburst disaster, while also serving as a clean fuel. With the increasing depth of mining operations, coal seams that exhibit high levels of gas content and low permeability have become increasingly prevalent. While controllable shockwave(CSW)technology has proven effective in enhancing CBM in laboratory settings, there is a lack of reports on its field applications in soft and low-permeability coal seams. This study establishes the governing equations for stress waves induced by CSW.Laplace numerical inversion was employed to analyse the dynamic response of the coal seam during CSW antireflection.Additionally, quantitative calculations were performed for the crushed zone, fracture zone, and effective CSW influence range, which guided the selection of field test parameters. The results of the field test unveiled a substantial improvement in the gas permeability coefficient, the average rate of pure methane flowrate, and the mean gas flowrate within a 10 m radius of the antireflection borehole. These enhancements were notable, showing increases of 3 times,13.72 times, and 11.48 times, respectively.Furthermore, the field test performed on the CSW antireflection gas extraction hole cluster demonstrated a noticeable improvement in CBM extraction. After antireflection, the maximum peak gas concentration and maximum peak pure methane flow reached 71.2%and 2.59 m^(3)/min,respectively.These findings will offer valuable guidance for the application of CSW antireflection technology in soft and low-permeability coal seams. 展开更多

Thick and ultra-thick coal seams are main coal seams for high production rate and high efficiency in Chinese coal mines, which accounts for 44 % of the total minable coal reserve. A fully mechanized top-coal caving mining method is a main underground coal extraction method for ultra-thick coal seams. The coal extraction technologies for coal seams less than 14 m thick were extensively used in China. However, for coal seams with thickness greater than 14 m, there have been no reported cases in the world for underground mechanical extraction with safe performance, high efficiency and high coal recovery ratio. To deal with this case, China Coal Technology & Engineering Group, Datong Coal Mine Group, and other 15 organizations in China launched a fundamental and big project to develop coal mining technologies and equipment for coal seams with thicknesses greater than 14 m. After the completion of the project, a coal extraction method was developed for top-coal caving with a large mining height, as well as a ground control theory for ultra-thick coal seams. In addition, the mining technology for top-coal caving with a large mining height, the ground support technology for roadway in coal seams with a large cross-section, and the prevention and control technology for gas and fire hazards were developed and applied. Furthermore, a hydraulic support with a mining height of 5.2 m, a shearer with high reliability, and auxiliary equipment were developed and manufactured. Practical implication on the technologies and equipment developed was successfully completed at the No. 8105 coal face in the Tashan coal mine, Datong, China. The major achievements of the project are summarized as follows: 1. A top-coal caving method for ultra-thick coal seams is proposed with a cutting height of 5 m and a top-coal caving height of 15 m. A structural mechanical model of overlying strata called cantilever beam-articulated rock beam is established. Based on the model, the load resistance of the hydraulic support with a large mining height for top-coal caving method is determined. With the analysis, the movement characteristics of the top coal and above strata are evaluated during top-coal caving operation at the coal face with a large mining height. Furthermore, there is successful development of comprehensive technologies for preventing and controlling spalling of the coal wall, and the top-coal caving technology with high efficiency and high recovery at the top-coal caving face with a large mining height. This means that the technologies developed have overcome the difficulties in strata control, top-coal caving with high efficiency and high coal recovery, and enabled to achieve a production rate of more than 10 Mtpa at a single top-coal caving face with a large mining height in ultra-thick coal seams; 2. A hydraulic support with 5.2 m supporting height and anti-rockburst capacity, a shearer with high reliability, a scraper conveyor with a large power at the back of face, and a large load and long distance headgate belt conveyor have been successfully developed for a top-coal caving face with large mining height. The study has developed the key technologies for improving the reliability of equipment at the coal face and has overcome the challenges in equipping the top-coal caving face with a large mining height in ultra-thick coal seams; 3. The deformation characteristics of a large cross-section roadway in ultra-thick coal seams are discovered. Based on the findings above, a series of bolt materials with a high yielding strength of 500-830 MPa and a high extension ratio, and cable bolt material with a 1 × 19 structure, large tonnage and high extension ratio are developed. In addition, in order to achieve a safe roadway and a fast face advance, installation equipment for high pre-tension bolt is developed to solve the problems with the support of roadway in coal seams for top-coal caving operation with a large mining height; 4. The characteristics of gas distribution and uneven emission at top-coal caving face with large mining height in ultra-thick coal seams are evaluated. With the application of the technologies of gas drainage in the roof, the difficulties in gas control for high intensive top-coal caving mining operations, known as "low gas content, high gas emission", are solved. In addition, large flow-rate underground mobile equipment for making nitrogen are developed to solve the problems with fire prevention and safe mining at a top-coal caving face with large mining height and production rate of more than 10 Mtpa. A case study to apply the developed technologies has been conducted at the No. 8105 face, the Tashan coal mine in Datong, China. The case study demonstrates that the three units of equipment, i.e., the support, shearer and scraper conveyor, are rationally equipped. Average equipment usage at the coal face is 92.1%. The coal recovery ratio at the coal face is up to 88.9 %. In 2011, the coal production at the No. 8105 face reached 10.849 Mtpa, exceeding the target of 10 Mtpa for a topcoal caving operation with large mining height performed by Chinese-made mining equipment. The technologies and equipment developed provide a way for extracting ultra-thick coal seams. Currently, the technologies and equipment are used in 13 mining areas in China including Datong, Pingshuo, Shendong and Xinjiang. With the exploitation of coal resources in Western China, there is great potential for the application of the technologies and equipment developed. 展开更多

In the past two decades, research on C_(2)storage in coal seams and simultaneously enhanced coalbed methane recovery(ECBM)has attracted a lot of attention due to its win–win effect between greenhouse gas(C_(2))emission reduction and coalbed methane recovery enhancement. This paper presents an overview on the current status of research on C_(2)-ECBM in the past two decades, which involves C_(2)storage capacity evaluations, laboratory investigations, modelings and pilot tests. The current status shows that we have made great progress in the ECBM technology study, especially in the understanding of the ECBM mechanisms. However, there still have many technical challenges, such as the definition of unmineable coal seams for C_(2)storage capacity evaluation and storage site characterization, methods for C_(2)injectivity enhancement, etc. The low injectivity of coal seams and injectivity loss with C_(2)injection are the major technique challenges of ECBM.We also search several ways to promote the advancement of ECBM technology in the present stage, such as integrating ECBM with hydraulic fracturing, using a gas mixture instead of pure C_(2)for injection into coal seams and the application of ECBM to underground coal mines. 展开更多

Water flooding disasters are one of the five natural coal-mining disasters that threaten the lives of coal miners. The main causes of this flooding are water-conducting fractured zones within coal seams. However, when resistivity methods are used to detect water-conducting fractured zones in coal seams, incorrect conclusions can be drawn because of electrical anisotropy within the water-conducting fractured zones. We present, in this paper, a new geo-electrical model based on the geology of water-conducting fractured zones in coal seams. Factors that influence electrical anisotropy were analyzed, including formation water resistivity, porosity, fracture density, and fracture surface roughness, pressure, and dip angle. Numerical simulation was used to evaluate the proposed electrical method. The results demonstrate a closed relationship between the shape of apparent resistivity and the strike and dip of a fracture. Hence, the findings of this paper provide a practical resistivity method for coal-mining production. 展开更多

In light of the severe deformation and destruction of the district raise tunnel in the mining area at the northern part of the Lubanshan colliery,by the theoretic analysis and numerical simulation, both the mining stress distribution in seams group and the deformation and destruction mechanism of floor district raise were investigated. The results show that,at the maximum vertical distance of 40 m,the abutment stress has an influence on the recovery of 2#and 3#coal seam and 8#coal seam at distance of 30 m.As a result, the recovery of 8#is rather than those of 2#or 3#coal seam, which contributes to the deformation and destruction of the district raise surrounding rock. The major factors affecting the abutment stress include the mining depth, mining height, residual gob space, adjacent working faces and short spacing coal seam recovery. 展开更多

In light of the escalating global energy imperatives, mining of challenging-to-access resources, such as steeply inclined extra-thick coal seams(SIEC),has emerged as one of the future trends within the domain of energy advancement. However, there is a risk of gas and coal spontaneous combustion coupling disasters(GCC)within the goaf of SIEC due to the complex goaf structure engendered by the unique mining methodologies of SIEC.To ensure that SIEC is mined safely and efficiently, this study conducts research on the GCC within the goaf of SIEC using field observation, theoretical analysis, and numerical modeling. The results demonstrate that the dip angle, the structural dimensions in terms of width-to-length ratio, and compressive strength of the overlying rock are the key factors contributing to the goaf instability of SIEC.The gangue was asymmetrically filled, primarily accumulating within the central and lower portions of the goaf, and the filling height increased proportionally with the advancing caving height, the expansion coefficient, and the thickness of the surrounding rock formation. The GCC occurs in the goaf of SIEC,with an air-return side range of 41 m and an air-intake side range of 14 m,at the intersection area of the“<”-shaped oxygen concentration distribution(coal spontaneous combustion)and the“>”-shaped gas concentration distribution(gas explosion). The optimal nitrogen flow rate is 1000 m3/h with an injection port situated 25 m away from the working face for the highest nitrogen diffusion efficacy and lowest risk of gas explosion, coal spontaneous combustion, and GCC.It has significant engineering applications for ensuring the safe mining of SIEC threatened by the GCC. 展开更多

Analyzed the support instable mode of sliding, tripping, and so on,and believed the key point of the support stability control of fully mechanized coal caving face with steep coal seams was to maintain that the seam true angle was less than the hydraulic support instability critical angle.Through the layout of oblique face, the improvement of support setting load, the control of mining height and nonskid platform, the group support system of end face, the advance optimization of conveyor and support, and the other control tech- nical measures, the true angle of the seam is reduced and the instable critical angle of the support is increased, the hydraulic support stability of fully mechanized coal caving face with steep coal seams is effectively controlled. 展开更多

The EGAT Mae Moh Mine is the largest open pit lignite mine in Thailand and it produces lignite about 16 million tons annually. In the near future, the pit limit of the mine will be reached and underground mine will then be developed through the open pit in the depth of 400 - 600 m from the surface. However, due to the challenges for underground mining such as poor geological conditions, extra thickness (20 - 30 m) of coal seams, and weak mechanical properties of coal seams and the surrounding rock, the success possibility of underground mining and an applicable underground mining method is being investigated at the present. The paper discusses the applicability of multi-slice bord-and-pillar method for the soft extra thick coal seams in the Mae Moh mine by means of numerical analyses using the 3D finite difference code “FLAC3D”. 展开更多

For a low permeability single coal seam prone to gas outbursts, pre-drainage of gas is difficult and inefficient, seriously restricting the safety and efficiency of production. Radical measures of increasing gas extraction efficiency are pressure relief and infrared antireflection. We have analyzed the effect of mining conditions and the regularity of mine pressure distribution in front of the working face of a major coal mine of the Jiaozuo Industrial (Group) Co. as our test area, studied the width of the depressurization zone in slice mining and analyzed gas efficiency and fast drainage in the advanced stress relaxation zone. On that basis, we further investigated and practiced the exploitation technology of shallow drilling, fan dril- ling and grid shape drilling at the working face. Practice and our results show that the stress relaxation zone is the ideal region for quick and efficient extraction of gas. By means of an integrated extraction technology, the amount of gas emitted into the zone was greatly reduced, while the risk of dangerous outbursts of coal and gas was lowered markedly. This exploration provides a new way to control for gas in working faces of coal mines with low permeability and risk of gas outbursts of single coal seams in the Jiaozuo mining area. 展开更多
