Designing Right-Turn Vehicle Box as a Supplemental Treatment to Eliminate Conflicts with Pedestrians and Bicycles

Field observations illustrated that, right-turn vehicles stopped at various positions when proceeding within the right-turn lanes, while some of them trespassed on the crosswalks with multiple stops. In this case, pedestrians and bikes (ped/bike) are encountered unsmooth and hazardous crossings when right-turn vehicles encroaching their lanes. Meanwhile, this also causes conflicts between right-turn and through vehicles at the crossing street. To better protect ped/bike at crossings with right-turn vehicles, this paper proposes a concept of “right-turn vehicle box” (RTVB) as a supplemental treatment within right-turn lanes. Sight distance, geometric conditions, and behaviors of vehicles and ped/bike are key factors to consider so as to set up the criteria and to design the suitable treatment. A case study was conducted at an intersection pair in Houston, USA to shape the idea of RTVB, together with driving simulator tests under relevant scenarios. The preliminary crosscheck examination shows that the right-turn vehicle box could possibly provide ped/ bike with smoother and safer crossings. In the interim, the safety and efficiency of right-turn operations were also improved. To further validate the effects, implementation studies should be conducted before the RTVB can make its debut in practice. Future works will focus on the complete warrants and design details of this treatment. Traffic at urban intersections frequently encounters unexpected obstructions,resulting in congestion due to uncooperative and priority-based driving behavior.This paper presents an optimal right-turn coordination system for Connected and Automated Vehicles(CAVs)at single-lane intersections,particularly in the context of left-hand side driving on roads.The goal is to facilitate smooth right turns for certain vehicles without creating bottlenecks.We consider that all approaching vehicles share relevant information through vehicular communications.The Intersection Coordination Unit(ICU)processes this information and communicates the optimal crossing or turning times to the vehicles.The primary objective of this coordination is to minimize overall traffic delays,which also helps improve the fuel consumption of vehicles.By considering information from upcoming vehicles at the intersection,the coordination system solves an optimization problem to determine the best timing for executing right turns,ultimately minimizing the total delay for all vehicles.The proposed coordination system is evaluated at a typical urban intersection,and its performance is compared to traditional traffic systems.Numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed coordination system significantly enhances the average traffic speed and fuel consumption compared to the traditional traffic system in various scenarios. 展开更多

Due to the fact that there is no protected signal phase for right turns at most signalized intersections, the conflict between pedestrians and right-turning vehicles is one of the most common conflict types for pedestrians. A pedestrian safety analysis of the common right-turn mode at four-phase signalized intersections is presented. Relative risk is used as a measure of the effect of behaviors. The analysis mainly includes five pedestrian factors that affect the conflict process between pedestrians and right-turning vehicles. Pedestrians tend to have a higher risk of being involved in conflicts in the following six situations: crossing with others, running over the crossing, entering the intersection, being near the exit lane, crossing in the middle or at the end of a green light when the right-turn lane is shared, crossing at the beginning of a green light or red period when the right-turn lane is exclusive. It is easier for pedestrians to get priority when crossing the street in the following situations: running over a crossing, entering the intersection, being near the entrance lane, and not using the crosswalk. However, pedestrians are more inclined to yield to right-turning vehicles when pedestrians are crossing in the middle of the green light time. Some measures to alleviate the conflict are put forward according to the conclusion. Video observations also indicate that a clear pedestrian waiting area must be marked for both pedestrian safety and right-turning vehicle efficiency at major flat intersections, particularly when the arms cover the lateral dividing strips. 展开更多

This study presents an investigation on the fatigue analysis of four types of details on orthotropic steel decks(OSDs)for a cable-stayed super-wide steel box girder bridge based on finite-element analysis(FEA)with vehicle transverse distribution model(VTDM).A high-fidelity 3D FE model verified by the static load test is established to satisfy the fatigue analysis accuracy.The stress behavior of super-wide steel box girders under the vehicle load at different lane locations is investigated.Then,considering the effect of VTDM,the fatigue life analysis of four typical details is performed using the Miner cumulative damage rule.The results show that the vehicle transverse location has a great influence on the stress behavior of details with sharp influence surface,and the stress ranges in the outermost lane are larger than those in other lanes,indicating that the details of OSD in the outermost lane are prone to fatigue.The fatigue life analysis indicates that the diaphragm cutout is more prone to fatigue than other details,which should be carefully treated in bridge maintenance. 展开更多

In this study, a dynamic modeling method for foil-like underwater vehicles is introduced and experimentally verified in different sea tests of the Hadal ARV. The dumping force of a foil-like underwater vehicle is sensitive to swing motion. Some foil-like underwater vehicles swing periodically when performing a free-fall dive task in experiments. Models using conventional modeling methods yield solutions with asymptotic stability, which cannot simulate the self-sustained swing motion. By improving the ridge regression optimization algorithm, a grey-box modeling method based on 378 viscous drag coefficients using the Taylor series expansion is proposed in this study. The method is optimized for over-fitting and convergence problems caused by large parameter matrices. Instead of the PMM test data, the unsteady computational fluid dynamics calculation results are used in modeling. The obtained model can better simulate the swing motion of the underwater vehicle. Simulation and experimental results show a good consistency in free-fall tests during sea trials, as well as a prediction of the dive speed in the swing state. 展开更多

The state of the art is reviewed for the crashworthiness of railway vehicles in aspects of materials,energy absorbing structures,train collision simulation and experiments.The recoverable and nonreversible energy absorbers are introduced for railway vehicles first.Metallic and non-metallic materials play a crucial role in the energy dissipation process.Thin-walled structures at vehicle ends are the main energy absorbers in train collisions,which include the deformation tube,crush box,deformable anti-climber and vehicle end structures.It is necessary to build a specific dynamic model for subway and high-speed trains,which includes gas-hydraulic buffers and energy absorption devices.Furthermore,train crashworthiness could be improved with the help of crash energy management.The train collision is commonly studied by numerical methods and experiments.The research method mainly depends on the primary purpose.The simulation depending on numerical methods should be validated by related experiments.The methods provide theoretical support for train crashworthy design. 展开更多

传统车标检测与识别算法难以检测大型车辆车标,且速度较慢。提出了一种基于Edge Boxes的大型车辆车标检测与识别方法。Edge Boxes算法是一种成熟的图像分割算法,能够快速且有效地检测物体位置,满足大型车辆车标检测与识别问题的准确性... 传统车标检测与识别算法难以检测大型车辆车标,且速度较慢。提出了一种基于Edge Boxes的大型车辆车标检测与识别方法。Edge Boxes算法是一种成熟的图像分割算法,能够快速且有效地检测物体位置,满足大型车辆车标检测与识别问题的准确性及实时性的需求。该方法首先根据车标在车辆中的空间位置关系初选车标候选区,然后利用Edge Boxes算法进行目标提取,进而将提取得到的目标送入利用线性约束编码构建的车标检测分类器和车标识别分类器进行训练与识别,得到车标检测与识别结果。对不同卡口的不同天气和光照条件下采集的4 480张图像(含50类大型车辆)进行实验,实验结果表明,在检测与识别性能以及时间消耗方面均优于传统方法,具有良好的实用前景。 展开更多

With the great development of unmanned aircraft system(UAS)over the last decade,sense and avoid(SAA)system has been a crucial technology for integrating unmanned aircraft vehicle(UAV)into national airspace with reliable and safe operations.This paper mainly focuses on intruder detection for SAA system.A robust algorithm based on the combination of edge-boxes and spatial pyramid matching using sparse coding(sc-SPM)is presented.The algorithm is composed of three stages.First,edge-boxes method is adopted to obtain a large number of proposals;Second,the optimization program is presented to obtain intruder area-of-interest(ROI)regions;Third,sc-SPM is employed for feature representation of ROI regions and support vector machines(SVM)is adopted to detect the intruder.The algorithm is evaluated under different weather conditions.The recall reaches to 0.95 in dawn and sunny weather and 0.9 in cloudy weather.The experimental results indicate that the intruder detection algorithm is effective and robust with various weather under complex background. 展开更多

针对地铁实际运营环境恶劣的问题,本文以轴箱振动加速度作为监测信号,基于深度残差收缩网络(DRSN),提出1种适用于强噪声背景的车轮扁疤故障严重程度辨识方法。首先,基于地铁车辆-轨道刚柔耦合动力学模型生成车轮扁疤故障数据集,并采用... 针对地铁实际运营环境恶劣的问题,本文以轴箱振动加速度作为监测信号,基于深度残差收缩网络(DRSN),提出1种适用于强噪声背景的车轮扁疤故障严重程度辨识方法。首先,基于地铁车辆-轨道刚柔耦合动力学模型生成车轮扁疤故障数据集,并采用数据增强技术提升数据集的多样性,同时满足深度学习对数据规模的要求。其次,设计1种结构合理的深度残差收缩网络,能够自适应地提取轴箱振动加速度信号的特征,从而实现车轮扁疤故障程度的智能分类。研究结果表明:在无噪声条件下,所提方法对正常车轮及轻度、中度和重度扁疤车轮的平均诊断精度达到99.88%(标准差为0.05);同时,在不同噪声等级下,该方法的平均诊断精度仍稳定保持在95%以上。与遗传算法结合支持向量机(GA-SVM)、卷积神经网络(CNN)、宽深度卷积神经网络(WDCNN)以及深度残差网络(ResNet)相比,所提方法具有更优异的辨识能力和鲁棒性。 展开更多

车载远程设备T-box具有车辆远程诊断及监控等功能,低成本方案的T-box定位接收模块精度低,易受城市中高楼、高架等建筑影响,出现定位点丢失或高噪声定位点。为解决低成本T-box易出现的定位问题,提出了一种通过去除经纬度高噪声数据点以... 车载远程设备T-box具有车辆远程诊断及监控等功能,低成本方案的T-box定位接收模块精度低,易受城市中高楼、高架等建筑影响,出现定位点丢失或高噪声定位点。为解决低成本T-box易出现的定位问题,提出了一种通过去除经纬度高噪声数据点以及多数据融合提高导航精度的方法。T-box带有微型惯性测量单元模块和车载诊断系统模块,分别采集微型惯性测量单元数据和汽车速度;最小二乘法拟合汽车行驶的轨迹去除原始定位数据中高噪声经纬度数据点;最后与汽车速度、惯性数据进行扩展卡尔曼滤波融合得到新的经纬度数据,与高精度定位数据对比,该方法能有效提高车载远程设备定位精度。 展开更多
