Purpose:We aimed to measure the variation in researchers’knowledge and attitudes towards bibliometric indicators. The focus is on mapping the heterogeneity of this metric-wiseness within and between disciplines.Design/methodology/approach:An exploratory survey is administered to researchers at the Sapienza University of Rome, one of Europe’s oldest and largest generalist universities. To measure metric-wiseness,we use attitude statements that are evaluated by a 5-point Likert scale. Moreover,we analyze documents of recent initiatives on assessment reform to shed light on how researchers’heterogeneous attitudes regarding and knowledge of bibliometric indicators are taken into account.Findings:We found great heterogeneity in researchers’metric-wiseness across scientific disciplines. In addition, within each discipline,we observed both supporters and critics of bibliometric indicators. From the document analysis,we found no reference to individual heterogeneity concerning researchers’metric wiseness.Research limitations:We used a self-selected sample of researchers from one Italian university as an exploratory case.Further research is needed to check the generalizability of our findings.Practical implications:To gain sufficient support for research evaluation practices,it is key to consider researchers’diverse attitudes towards indicators.Originality/value:We contribute to the current debate on reforming research assessment by providing a novel empirical measurement of researchers’knowledge and attitudes towards bibliometric indicators and discussing the importance of the obtained results for improving current research evaluation systems. 展开更多

Purpose:To gain insights into the levels of training and support in research integrity and publishing ethics, levels of experience in publishing in scholarly journals and use of third-party manuscript preparation/editing services(which can include paper mills),and also to assess levels of awareness regarding different types of publishing ethics misconduct,we surveyed members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)Journal Ranking WeChat channel.Design/methodology/approach:The online survey collected voluntary anonymous responses from members of the CAS Journal Ranking WeChat channel, one of largest channels of Chinese researchers at all career stages within STM and social sciences. The respondents of the survey fell into one of the following categories:Undergraduate student,Master’s student,PhD candidate,Researcher,Research manager,Researcher with research management responsibilities, and Librarian. The survey included 14 main questions on the topics of access to research integrity and publishing ethics training, experience levels in publishing in scholarly journals(including using third-party services),authorship experiences and behaviours, levels of concern about different types of research integrity issues, and perceptions on who the respondents think are primarily responsible for upholding research integrity standards and training in publishing ethics. After applying inclusion criteria,1,777 responses were included in the analysis.Findings:Amongst the 1,777 respondents included in the study results, only 55.4%had any access to training in research integrity and publishing ethics, and an even smaller proportion to formal training.Even amongst cohorts with access to training(where respondents in the Researcher cohort have the highest access),answers to the questions on authorship and third-party services reveal many areas of confusion regarding authorship criteria and responsibilities in publishing ethics. In particular, the responses also show limited knowledge in recognising unethical service offerings by third-party services(e.g.adding authors, citations and data/images).The survey responses also show that even though respondents in the undergraduate cohort are already actively publishing articles as well as using third-party manuscript preparation/editing services, they have limited access to training and have high levels of uncertainty about authorship responsibilities.Out of all key stakeholders, respondents perceive research institutions to be mainly responsible for upholding research integrity standards as well as providing access to training.Research limitations:As with all voluntary online surveys, the study design includes inherent limitations due to the self-reported nature of the responses. The respondents who participate are likely to have a particular interest and a higher level of awareness about the survey topic, and so the self-selecting nature of the participants can introduce personal biases, which can affect the overall results. This survey was sent to members of a WeChat channel focused on journal rankings, which also discusses research integrity issues,so the respondents may not provide a general representation of their career stage/subject discipline cohorts. The sample sizes were not comparable across all cohorts,so direct comparisons could not always be made.Instead, where appropriate, separate comparisons were made between Undergraduate students,Master’s students,PhD candidates and Researchers(29.26%-18.68%of respondents),or between Research managers,Researcher with research management responsibilities and Librarians(4.28%-2.53%of respondents).Practical implications:It is important to ensure that research integrity and publishing ethics training and education needs are being met for researchers at all levels, including undergraduates.Findings from the survey highlight the importance of establishing training and education programmes tailored towards addressing specific areas of common confusion or limited awareness, especially to reduce the risk of unintentional misconduct. The findings from this survey can be used to inform training and education partnerships and collaborations across key stakeholders, including research institutions and publishers,so that we can collectively improve the overall integrity of scholarly publishing.A table of recommendations and a hypothetical case have been included to illustrate how this can be achieved.Originality/value:To our knowledge, this is the first survey on this topic developed via a collaboration between the research integrity team at an international scholarly publisher and scientometrics researchers based in China.Sharing our perspectives and experience to develop the survey questions has helped to highlight the common areas of confusion regarding authorship responsibilities and ethical third-party service offerings within researchers in China, even amongst those who do have access to training. 展开更多

Purpose:This study investigates key factors contributing to research impact and their interactions with the Research Impact Quintuple Helix Model by Arsalan et al.(2024).Design/methodology/approach:Using data from a global survey of 630 scientists across diverse disciplines, genders, regions, and experience levels,Structural Equation Modelling(SEM)was employed to assess the influence of 29 factors related to researcher characteristics, research attributes, publication strategies, institutional support, and national roles.Findings:The study validated the Quintuple Helix Model, uncovering complex interdependencies.Institutional support significantly affects research impact by covering leadership, resources, recognition, and funding.Researcher attributes, including academic experience and domain knowledge, also play a crucial role.National socioeconomic conditions indirectly influence research impact by supporting institutions, underscoring the importance of conducive national frameworks.Research limitations:While the study offers valuable insights,it has limitations.Although statistically sufficient, the response rate was below 10%,suggesting that the findings may not fully represent the entire global research community. The reliance on self-reported data may also introduce bias,as perceptions of impact can be subjective.Practical implications:The findings have a significant impact on researchers aiming to enhance their work’s societal, economic, and cultural significance, institutions seeking supportive environments, and policymakers interested in creating favourable national conditions for impactful research. The study advocates for a strategic alignment among national policies, institutional practices, and individual researcher efforts to maximise research impact and effectively address global challenges.Originality/value:By empirically validating the Research Impact Quintuple Helix Model, this study offers a holistic framework for understanding the synergy of factors that drive impactful research. 展开更多

Purpose:Diaspora researchers work in one country but have ancestral origins in another, either through moves during a research career(mobile diaspora researchers)or by starting research in the target country(embedded diaspora researchers).Whilst mobile researchers might be tracked through affiliation changes in bibliometric databases, embedded researchers cannot. This article reports an evidence-based discussion of which countries’diaspora researchers can be partially tracked using first or last names, addressing this limitation.Design/methodology/approach:A frequency analysis of first and last names of authors of all Scopus journal articles 2001-2021 for 200 countries or regions.Findings:There are great variations in the extent to which first or last names are uniquely national, from Monserrat(no unique first names)to Thailand(81%unique last names).Nevertheless, most countries have a subset of first or last names that are relatively unique. For the 50 countries with the most researchers, authors with relatively national names are always more likely to research their name-associated country, suggesting a continued national association.Lists of researchers’first and last name frequencies and proportions are provided for 200 countries/regions.Research limitations:Only one period is tracked(2001-2021)and no attempt was made to validate the ancestral origins of any researcher.Practical implications:Simple name heuristics can be used to identify the international spread of a sample of most countries’diaspora researchers, but some manual checks of individual names are needed to weed out false matches. This can supplement mobile researcher data from bibliometric databases.Originality/value:This is the first attempt to list name associations for the authors of all countries and large regions, and to identify the countries for which diaspora researchers could be tracked by name. 展开更多

Purpose:In studies of the research process, the association between how researchers conceptualize research and their strategic research agendas has been largely overlooked. This study aims to address this gap.Design/methodology/approach:This study analyzes this relationship using a dataset of more than 8,500 researchers across all scientific fields and the globe. It studies the associations between the dimensions of two inventories:the Conceptions of Research Inventory(CoRI)and the Multi-Dimensional Research Agenda Inventory—Revised(MDRAI-R).Findings:The findings show a relatively strong association between researchers’conceptions of research and their research agendas. While all conceptions of research are positively related to scientific ambition, the findings are mixed regarding how the dimensions of the two inventories relate to one another, which is significant for those seeking to understand the knowledge production process better.Research limitations:The study relies on self-reported data, which always carries a risk of response bias.Practical implications:The findings provide a greater understanding of the inner workings of knowledge processes and indicate that the two inventories, whether used individually or in combination, may provide complementary analytical perspectives to research performance indicators. They may thus offer important insights for managers of research environments regarding how to assess the research culture, beliefs, and conceptualizations of individual researchers and research teams when designing strategies to promote specific institutional research focuses and strategies.Originality/value:To the best of the authors’knowledge, this is the first study to associate research agendas and conceptions of research. It is based on a large sample of researchers working worldwide and in all fields of knowledge, which ensures that the findings have a reasonable degree of generalizability to the global population of researchers. 展开更多

Purpose:The ranking lists of highly cited researchers receive much public attention. In common interpretations, highly cited researchers are perceived to have made extraordinary contributions to science. Thus, the metrics of highly cited researchers are often linked to notions of breakthroughs, scientific excellence, and lone geniuses.Design/methodology/approach:In this study,we analyze a sample of individuals who appear on Clarivate Analytics’Highly Cited Researchers list. The main purpose is to juxtapose the characteristics of their research performance against the claim that the list captures a small fraction of the researcher population that contributes disproportionately to extending the frontier and gaining—on behalf of society—knowledge and innovations that make the world healthier, richer, sustainable, and more secure.Findings:The study reveals that the highly cited articles of the selected individuals generally have a very large number of authors. Thus, these papers seldom represent individual contributions but rather are the result of large collective research efforts conducted in research consortia. This challenges the common perception of highly cited researchers as individual geniuses who can be singled out for their extraordinary contributions. Moreover, the study indicates that a few of the individuals have not even contributed to highly cited original research but rather to reviews or clinical guidelines. Finally, the large number of authors of the papers implies that the ranking list is very sensitive to the specific method used for allocating papers and citations to individuals. In the"whole count"methodology applied by Clarivate Analytics, each author gets full credit of the papers regardless of the number of additional co-authors.The study shows that the ranking list would look very different using an alternative fractionalised methodology.Research limitations:The study is based on a limited part of the total population of highly cited researchers.Practical implications:It is concluded that"excellence"understood as highly cited encompasses very different types of research and researchers of which many do not fit with dominant preconceptions.Originality/value:The study develops further knowledge on highly cited researchers, addressing questions such as who becomes highly cited and the type of research that benefits by defining excellence in terms of citation scores and specific counting methods. 展开更多

This study focuses on the role of researcher/academia in making low carbon policy in the UK. UK researchers and universities enjoy relatively high degree of independence of their research from the government due to its statute that guarantees its independence ("The Haldene Principle"). In addition, there was a recent movement for evidence-based policy in the UK, which requires more economic and scientific robustness, therefore role of engineers and social scientists are increasingly important. In particular, social science will have a greater role in changing people's behavior with high level of uncertainty. UK businesses have played a leading role to move forward the climate policy such as UKETS (United Kingdom Emissions Trading Scheme) as well as low carbon policy. The regular communication and consultation is a crucial basis for making integrated policy, which involves wide range of stakeholders. The legally binding targets set out by Climate Change Act 2008 required structural change of the government to implement the necessary policies and measures especially by integrating climate and energy policy. 展开更多

Most research-based fertilizer inputs proposed for small scale farmers to increase their productivity do not achieve the required results and should consider indigenous practices. This study evaluates the practices of nutrient fertilizer input by farmers and researchers and relates them to their corresponding yields and profit so as to establish the appropriateness of the practices in 13 districts of the Northern regions of Ghana. Soil nutrients assessment of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) contents used to evaluate the soil NPK status was based on previous studies. Data on fertilizer application by farmers and researchers were obtained from the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI). The amount of N, P and K fertilizer input in 13 Districts and its associated maize grain yields by both farmers (89) and researchers were calculated and compared using two-sample t-test. The t-test results indicated that average amount of fertilizer input by researchers was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than the average amount of fertilizer input by the smallholder farmers, but the high fertilizer input did not significantly (p = 0.74) increase researchers’ maize yields and profits in all 13 study districts grouped together, but there was maize increment in only eight districts. On the average, farmers from five districts applied low fertilizer and recorded low yields. However, when researchers increased quantities of fertilizer applied in these five districts, yield significantly (p < 0.05) increased. The outcome showed that smallholder farmers in these five districts could increase maize yields by 36% in the region should they adopt the maize production strategy by the researchers. The study concluded that, for best options, recommended fertilizer doses to enhance maize yields should consider district-specific farmers’ practices and soil NPK status. The study could enable better implementation of location-based nutrient recommendation in the Northern Region of Ghana. 展开更多
