Singer puts a modern musical face on ancient cultural classics In traditional loose sleeved Chinese costume and a hairstyle straight from ancient China, a slim female singer stepped onto the stage, singing a wistful song called Li. "Li is respect, Li is elegance, Li is purity, Li is tranquility; Li comes from a smile, Li comes from love, Li comes from the heart," she sings, accompanied by a melody of haunting court music. The singer is appearing on CCTV, China’s National TV station, in a music program aired during the 2008 Olympic Games. 展开更多

REINVENTING TRADITIONAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUSTAINABILITY: Contemporary Earth Architecture of Sri Lanka

In the search for sustainability,Sri Lanka like most countries has been looking at modern and new materials and technologies as much as at the indigenous practices.Despite having possessed a resourceful repository of traditional technologies and practices, their reinventions, however, have remained somewhat unrecognized. This stems partly from the absence of focused research as well as sponsored or recognized programs to promote and experiment with the new possibilities of their applications in modern building.Sri Lanka’s traditional architecture has been extensively studied, and there exists much literature on the art and construction of the buildings. However,a greater focus has been on recording the variety of their spatial patterns together with the architectural compositions and appearances of buildings and their architectural details(De Vos 1988;De Silva 1990;Lewcock et al.2002).While De Vos and De Silva have constructed a set of patterns of traditional Sri Lankan houses in settlements,Lewcock et al.have traversed the entire range of traditional settlements and buildings and particularly their architectural splendor.Karunaratne has often highlighted the marvel of timber architecture(1984),while many archeologists have discussed the structures and constructions of buildings in the context of the history and archeology of Sri Lanka’s ancient civilizations. In contrast,Dayaratne(1999,2000,2003,2007)shows how its indigenous architecture has been inherently sustainable and how some of the modern architects have employed their principles in creating architecture that is appropriate to culture and kinder to the environment. This paper provides a general introduction to the traditional materials of Sri Lanka and examines in detail how earth architecture has been revitalized as a sustainable approach to building. 展开更多

This article explores the intersections of Buddhism,Daoism, and contemporary French literary practice in the study of the everyday(quotidien).Since the 1980s,French literature has increasingly shifted its focus from the exotic to the mundane, engaging with theoretical frameworks developed by scholars such as Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau.Drawing on Buddhist notions of emptiness and dependent arising,as well as Daoist principles of yin-yang interdependence, the article bridges Eastern and Western philosophies to demonstrate the everyday not as a static or trivial backdrop, but as a dynamic and transformative space. It further examines how representations of daily life in the works of Georges Perec and Jacques Roubaud employ the meticulous documentation of mundane details to uncover hidden patterns, rhythms, and structures of human experience.Through literary fieldwork,Perec and Roubaud challenge conventional perceptions of the everyday, unveiling its depth, complexity, and potential for reinvention. 展开更多

The connection between administrative reform and civil society was an issue on the agenda of the New Public Management (NPM) in the 1960s and 1970s, while reinventing government movement has stimulated both interest in and criticism of the impact on civil society of public sector entrepreneurship. Modernizing the civil service starts by “bringing the citizens in”. Therefore, a strong and sincere leadership in government’s bureaucracy is needed. In the other words, building a strong and democratic government is a must. 展开更多

This article will study the Quebecois novels of the 1960-1980's and especially the feeling of debt that women had because of the Christian Bible that condemned women as being the sinful Eve responsable for the Fall of Humanity. These novelists from Quebec, Marie-Claire Blais, Anne Hebert, and Gabrielle Roy, show that their female characters are unable to let go of this myth of the incarnation in their bodies of the temptations leading to Sin. Consequently, these heroines show a violent disgust for their bodies, and for all sexual manifestations (puberty, pregnancey, child-birth) that they describe very crudely. They reject their bodies and live in shame of their bodies. For this reason, they dress with modesty and have a neurotic fear of the Sin of the Flesh. This Sin makes them want to withdraw from the image of the temptress Eve and to identify themselves to Mary, the sublimated woman. For Quebec novelist Gabrielle Roy, the female debt cannot be repaid by a sublimation of women to Mary, but by a sublimation of women's own talents. Gabrielle Roy sees her late birth as a debt contracted towards her very impoverished and old parents. Fortunately, in her adolescence, she rebels against this unfair contract that her family and especially her mother imposes on her and that wrongs her because it forces her to follow the career path of a school teacher to repay the debts of her family. She withdraws from this debt by leaving for France and following the career path of a writer. She will redeem the debt of her family by writing her autobiography which is a monument in sublimation of her mother 展开更多

Urban culture,as the core force of urban development, has been explored more deeply in the process of modern urban transformation and construction. However, cities have their own unique memories, and cultural continuity and heritage require further innovation. The Suzhou River was the center of Shanghai’s initial development and carries an important cultural heritage. In 1996,Shanghai launched the comprehensive environmental improvement of the Suzhou River, which has achieved the reverse industrialization of the Suzhou River through the fine management of the city, and has made a good achievement of urban management and a new culture of the Suzhou River. This paper takes,Shanghai,a maritime city,as the background, takes the management of Suzhou River as the entry point to explore the new path of building urban culture in the new era,and studies the cultural significance contained in the fine management of modern cities. 展开更多

Carbon is an element with exceptional capacity for structural reinvention. This interesting characteristic, which has captivated numerous scientists in different areas of chemistry,is more than evident when the different allotropes of carbon are considered[1].From the rigidity of diamond to the layered structure of graphite, from the curved architectures of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes to the two-dimensional sheets of graphene, carbon relentlessly fascinates chemists with its versatility. Each of these carbon allotropes arises because carbon atoms can hybridize their orbitals in different ways(i.e.,sp^(3),sp^(2),and sp)and combinations. 展开更多
