Introduction:Recurrent cystitis, defined as at least two episodes within six months or three episodes within one year, presented among about one fifth to one-third of women with history of cystitis or urinary tract infection(UTI) according to previous studies. However, the use of antibiotics can only resolve the urinary symptoms but not reduce the frequency of urinary symptoms recurrence, and meanwhile increasing rates of adverse effect of repetitive antimicrobial therapy and bacterial antimicrobial resistance became clinical concerns. This case report aims to present a case of recurrent cystitis treated by electroacupuncture(EA) in reducing recurrent frequency, amount of antibiotics used and urinary symptoms.Case presentation:A 42-year-old woman diagnosed with recurrent cystitis for five years presented mainly with recurrent dysuria, urine frequency and urgency. She received EA treatment 3 to 5 sessions a week and 30 min per session from August 2019 to August 2020 with 3-month suspension due to Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19).During the treatment, both the frequency of recurrent urinary episode and symptoms were reduced.Although there was some fluctuation, the mean frequencies of daytime voiding reduced dramatically from 17.7 to 8.3,and night-time voiding from 4 to 1,and the number of voiding with moderate urgency was reduced from 17.7 to 2.3,and severe urgency dropped from 2.7 to 0.The patient’s scores of overactive bladder symptom score(OABSS) and overactive bladder questionnaire short form(OAB-q SF) were also improved. The postvoid residual urine volume(PVR) reduced from 42 mL to less than 10 mL Conclusion:This case of individual effect of EA for a woman with frequent recurrent cystitis suggested a plausible benefit of EA on reducing frequency, amount of antibiotics used and symptoms of recurrent cystitis, but further research is necessary to proof the efficacy and effectiveness among a wider population. 展开更多

Objectives:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the combination of bacteriophage therapy with antibiotics and bacteriophage treatment alone on relieving clinical symptoms of chronic recurrent cystitis caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria.Materials and methods:This clinical trial compared the treatment methods of 217 female patients with chronic recurrent cystitiscaused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, who were investigated from June 2020 to May 2023.Patients were allocated into 4 groups:group I:received bacteriophage(Sextaphage)therapy alone;groupⅡ:received a combination of bacteriophages(Sextaphage)andfurazidin;groupⅢ:received a combination of bacteriophage(Sextaphage)and furazidin with cefixime;and group Ⅳ:received furazidinand cefixime(without bacteriophage). The primary outcome included changes in the acute cystitis symptom scale and the pain visualanalog scale, which were completed on days 7 and 14 following treatment.Secondary outcome measures included bladder diary records of urinary symptoms, median voided volumes, level of bacteriuria, and degree of leukocyturia.Results:Initially,217 female patients were presented during baseline visits. Those who did not meet the criteria inclusions were excluded, and 178 female patients were included in the final analysis.Statistically significant improvements from baseline in acute cystitissymptom scale scores for differential, typical symptoms, and quality of life domains were observed after 14 days of treatment in groupsⅡ,Ⅲ,and Ⅳ.The pain level measured on the 14th day with the visual analog scale significantly decreased in groupsⅡ,Ⅲ,and Ⅳ comparedwith group Ⅰ.The patients of group Ⅰ had a reduction of mean level bacteriuria of Escherichia coli from 106 to 102 CFU/mL at 14 days oftherapy.Significant improvement of voided volume from baseline was observed in groupsⅡ,Ⅲ,and Ⅳ.Episodes of urinary frequency, both daytime and night-time,reduced significantly from baseline in all 4 groups only at 14 days of treatment. Conclusions:Bacteriophage cocktail alone or with antibiotics may improve clinical symptoms in women with chronic recurrent cystitiscaused by multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens. In addition to improving clinical symptoms, the therapy with a phage cocktail mayrestore antibiotic sensitivity and increase the efficacy of antimicrobial agents. 展开更多
