This study explores the influence of after-school tutoring on reading comprehension skills of students with dyslexia(DD)in grades 3-5 in China and its participating factors.Using a mixed-methods design,the quantitativ...This study explores the influence of after-school tutoring on reading comprehension skills of students with dyslexia(DD)in grades 3-5 in China and its participating factors.Using a mixed-methods design,the quantitative data(GORT-4 reading test)of 50 public primary school students in Qingdao and their parents’feedback were collected through questionnaires,supplemented by semi-structured interviews with eight parents for qualitative analysis.The findings are as follows:(1)Family socioeconomic status and parents’awareness of DD are the key factors to participate in after-school counseling;(2)The students who participated in the after-school counseling performed significantly better in the GORT-4 comprehension test(P<0.05);(3)Counseling makes up for the lack of classroom learning through personalized strategies(such as multi-sensory teaching and phonological awareness training),but parents’psychological support is the core of successful intervention.The necessity of early targeted intervention was emphasized,and practical enlightenment was provided for the educational support system of DD students in China.展开更多

Addressing the issues of low accuracy and slow detection speed in recognizing pointer meter readings under varying types and distances, this paper proposes a recognition method based on YOLOv8 and DeepLabv3+. To improve the image input quality of the DeepLabv3+ model, the YOLOv8 detector is used to quickly locate the instrument region and crop it as the input image for recognition. To enhance the accuracy and speed of pointer recognition, the backbone network of DeepLabv3+ was replaced with Mo-bileNetv3, and the ECA+ module was designed to replace its SE module, reducing model parameters while improving recognition precision. The decoder’s fourfold-up sampling was replaced with two twofold-up samplings, and shallow feature maps were fused with encoder features of the corresponding size. The CBAM module was introduced to improve the segmentation accuracy of the pointer. Experiments were conducted using a self-made dataset of pointer-style instruments from nuclear power plants. Results showed that this method achieved a recognition accuracy of 94.5% at a precision level of 2.5, with an average error of 1.522% and an average total processing time of 0.56 seconds, demonstrating strong performance.展开更多

With the evolutionary change in information and communication technologies （ICT）, the definition of literacy has undergone substantial change to include the skills and strategies required to successfully adapt to th...With the evolutionary change in information and communication technologies （ICT）, the definition of literacy has undergone substantial change to include the skills and strategies required to successfully adapt to the rapidly changing ICT contexts. This new definition presents an urgent need to acknowledge the gap between the types of reading experiences students come across at school and those they regularly practice outside the school. One way to bridge such gap is to expand the reading instruction to incorporate electronic reading device, like Kindle, to engage students in electronic reading. Many e-books feature multimodal functionalities, including audio, video, hyperlinks, and interactive tools. Research on this form of reading is still in its infancy in spite of some positive prospects for fostering literacy development and reading comprehension. Therefore, adopting a mixed method approach with 36 college freshmen in central Taiwan, the current study intended to fill in the void by investigating any difference in readers＇ reading comprehension and reading motivation, between the Kindle group and the print-based group. The results indicate that embedding aspects of technology into a traditional reading instruction boosted the participants＇ motivation to read. Nevertheless, the novelty-driven enthusiasm for electronic reading might not sustain students＇ reading motivation long enough to cultivate long-lasting reading habits. The results indicate that there was no significant difference in reading comprehension between two groups. Implications for utilizing electronic readers in EFL classes are also provided.展开更多

Background Lip reading uses lip images for visual speech recognition.Deep-learning-based lip reading has greatly improved performance in current datasets;however,most existing research ignores the significance of shor...Background Lip reading uses lip images for visual speech recognition.Deep-learning-based lip reading has greatly improved performance in current datasets;however,most existing research ignores the significance of short-term temporal dependencies of lip-shape variations between adjacent frames,which leaves space for further improvement in feature extraction.Methods This article presents a spatiotemporal feature fusion network(STDNet)that compensates for the deficiencies of current lip-reading approaches in short-term temporal dependency modeling.Specifically,to distinguish more similar and intricate content,STDNet adds a temporal feature extraction branch based on a 3D-CNN,which enhances the learning of dynamic lip movements in adjacent frames while not affecting spatial feature extraction.In particular,we designed a local–temporal block,which aggregates interframe differences,strengthening the relationship between various local lip regions through multiscale convolution.We incorporated the squeeze-and-excitation mechanism into the Global-Temporal Block,which processes a single frame as an independent unitto learn temporal variations across the entire lip region more effectively.Furthermore,attention pooling was introduced to highlight meaningful frames containing key semantic information for the target word.Results Experimental results demonstrated STDNet's superior performance on the LRW and LRW-1000,achieving word-level recognition accuracies of 90.2% and 53.56%,respectively.Extensive ablation experiments verified the rationality and effectiveness of its modules.Conclusions The proposed model effectively addresses short-term temporal dependency limitations in lip reading,and improves the temporal robustness of the model against variable-length sequences.These advancements validate the importance of explicit short-term dynamics modeling for practical lip-reading systems.展开更多

文摘With the evolutionary change in information and communication technologies （ICT）, the definition of literacy has undergone substantial change to include the skills and strategies required to successfully adapt to the rapidly changing ICT contexts. This new definition presents an urgent need to acknowledge the gap between the types of reading experiences students come across at school and those they regularly practice outside the school. One way to bridge such gap is to expand the reading instruction to incorporate electronic reading device, like Kindle, to engage students in electronic reading. Many e-books feature multimodal functionalities, including audio, video, hyperlinks, and interactive tools. Research on this form of reading is still in its infancy in spite of some positive prospects for fostering literacy development and reading comprehension. Therefore, adopting a mixed method approach with 36 college freshmen in central Taiwan, the current study intended to fill in the void by investigating any difference in readers＇ reading comprehension and reading motivation, between the Kindle group and the print-based group. The results indicate that embedding aspects of technology into a traditional reading instruction boosted the participants＇ motivation to read. Nevertheless, the novelty-driven enthusiasm for electronic reading might not sustain students＇ reading motivation long enough to cultivate long-lasting reading habits. The results indicate that there was no significant difference in reading comprehension between two groups. Implications for utilizing electronic readers in EFL classes are also provided.
文摘Reading comprehension ability is one of the key abilities trained in College English teaching in China. This paper first examines the theories behind top-down and bottom-up reading strategies, and then suggests top-down reading strategies are more effective than the bottom-up ones in training EFL learners to be efficient readers in English. In particular, taking into account the English proficiency and the cognitive ability of the Chinese university students （non-English major）, the author argues that more priorities should be given to the top-down reading strategies training in EFL reading class.

文摘In recent 10 years, teaching English newspaper reading for English majors in China has got rapid development. At the same time, social demand for college students＇ English newspaper reading ability has also improved. But the existing teaching effect of English newspaper reading course is not ideal. What is proposed in this paper is to apply the research-oriented teaching mode to the teaching of English newspaper reading and expound the three stages of pre-reading, reading, and after-reading respectively in order to subvert the teaching of reading class over which teachers dominate traditionally, to change the center of the double main bodies, to develop learners＇ intellectual and non-intellectual factors of comprehensive quality, and to improve their ability of discovering, researching, and solving the problems.

文摘Background Lip reading uses lip images for visual speech recognition.Deep-learning-based lip reading has greatly improved performance in current datasets;however,most existing research ignores the significance of short-term temporal dependencies of lip-shape variations between adjacent frames,which leaves space for further improvement in feature extraction.Methods This article presents a spatiotemporal feature fusion network(STDNet)that compensates for the deficiencies of current lip-reading approaches in short-term temporal dependency modeling.Specifically,to distinguish more similar and intricate content,STDNet adds a temporal feature extraction branch based on a 3D-CNN,which enhances the learning of dynamic lip movements in adjacent frames while not affecting spatial feature extraction.In particular,we designed a local–temporal block,which aggregates interframe differences,strengthening the relationship between various local lip regions through multiscale convolution.We incorporated the squeeze-and-excitation mechanism into the Global-Temporal Block,which processes a single frame as an independent unitto learn temporal variations across the entire lip region more effectively.Furthermore,attention pooling was introduced to highlight meaningful frames containing key semantic information for the target word.Results Experimental results demonstrated STDNet's superior performance on the LRW and LRW-1000,achieving word-level recognition accuracies of 90.2% and 53.56%,respectively.Extensive ablation experiments verified the rationality and effectiveness of its modules.Conclusions The proposed model effectively addresses short-term temporal dependency limitations in lip reading,and improves the temporal robustness of the model against variable-length sequences.These advancements validate the importance of explicit short-term dynamics modeling for practical lip-reading systems.
