Antenna is very crucial to radiotelemetry capsules which can measure the physiological parameters of the gastroin- testinal (GI) tract. The objective of this paper is to design a novel spiral slots microstrip patch antenna for the radiotelemetry capsules communicating with external recorder at 915 MHz located in ISM (Industry, Science, and Medical) bands. The microstrip patch antenna is designed and evaluated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Return loss characteristics and the effect of the human body on resonant frequency are analyzed, and the performances of radiation patterns at different positions of the human alimentary tract are also estimated. Finally, specific absorption rate (SAR) computations are performed, and the peak 1-g and 10-g SAR values are calculated. According to the peak SAR values, the maximum delivered power for the designed antenna was found so that the SAR values of the antenna satisfy the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) limitations. 展开更多

The objective of this paper is to design a microstrip patch antenna for the miniature electro-capsule communicating with external recorder at 915MHz located in Industry, Science, and Medical (ISM) bands. Microstrip antenna design parameters, resonance characteristics and radiation patterns are evaluated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The effects of location of feed point and human body are analyzed, and the radiation performances of the proposed antenna are estimated in terms of radiation patterns. Finally, specific absorption rate (SAR) computations are also performed, and the peak 1-g and 10-g SAR values are calculated. The method of processing of the non-stationary casual processes with the use of nonparametric methods of the theory of decisions is considered. The use of such methods is admissible in telemetry systems in need of processing at real rate of time of fast-changing casual processes in the conditions of aprioristic uncertainty about probabilistic properties of measured process. 展开更多

For songbirds, the post-fledging period is critical for development and survival,as young must learn to get food, practice flying, and identify predators to become independent from their parents and disperse or migrate.Obligate avian brood parasites, like cuckoos and cowbirds, lay eggs in nests of other bird species that provide parental care until the parasite’s young become independent. The information on the post-fledging period in songbirds is limited due to the difficulty in following and observing fledglings and it is even scarcer for brood parasites. We studied the behavior, survival, and age of independence of Shiny Cowbird(Molothrus bonariensis)fledglings raised by 2 hosts that differ markedly in body size:the House Wren(Troglodytes aedon)and the Chalk-Browed Mockingbird(Mimus saturninus). We radio-tracked individuals from a few days before they left the nest until they disappeared from the natal territory. We found:(1)chicks left the nest when they were 11-15 days of age and the age of fledgling did not differ between the 2 host species,(2)after leaving the nest, they spent most of the time perched in a hidden place without begging but as they grew, the proportion of time perched without begging decreased and begging in hidden and exposed places increased,(3)we observed approaches between adult parasitic females and young in host territories,(4)young abandoned the host territory and joined conspecific flocks when they were 35-39 days of age,and(5)the estimated post-fledging survival was between 12.5%and 20.8%. 展开更多

The translocation of snakes has been viewed as a useful tool to augment declining populations and to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, even though released snakes often exhibit relatively high mortality. We radio-tracked 13 Amur Ratsnakes (Elaphe schrenckii) in the Woraksan National Park in South Korea from July 2008 to May 2009. Two of these snakes were residents, and 11 had been illegally captured in areas remote from the study site and were donated by the park office. During the study period, six of the translocated snakes were lost: two were killed by predators, one died of unknown causes, and the radio signals of three of the snakes were lost. In the field, the ratsnakes laid eggs in early August, moved into hibemacula in late November, and moved away from the hibemacula in mid-April. Compared to the resident snakes, five of the translocated snakes traveled approximately 1.3 times farther per week, and the home ranges of the translocated snakes were three to six times larger than those of the resident snakes. In addition, the translocated snakes were found underground more frequently than the resident snakes. The management recommendations resulting from this study will guide biologists and land use managers in making appropriate decisions regarding release sites and the use of gravid females in the translocation of this endangered ratsnake. 展开更多

The home ranges of the Narcissus Flycatcher(Ficedula narcissina elisae)and the Yellow-rumped Fly-catcher(F.zanthopygia)are measured by radio telemetry in a subalpine forest near Beijing,China. The home range is calculated by 100%Minimum Convex Polygon(MCP),and the area varies from 2,000 to 5,000 m2.The majority of fly-catchers can be found in the bottom of valleys and the under-side of mountains. It is fairly rare for both Flycatcher species to leave their nests more than 70 m.Individuals of the species in pair-banding and nest-detecting periods have larger home ranges than those in incubation and rearing periods. The levels of canopy coverage in the home ranges of Narcissus Flycatchers are significantly higher than that of Yellow-rumped Flycatchers. There are also more tall trees and stumps in the home ranges of Narcissus Flycatchers than in that of Yellow-rumped Flycatchers. The dominant tree species in the home ranges of Narcissus Flycatchers is Dahurian Birch(Betula dahurica),whereas Manchurian Walnut(Juglans mandshurica)is the dominant tree species in the home ranges of Yellow-rumped Flycatchers. 展开更多
