The present study identified the functional Gardenblue blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade) anthocyanin extracts (GBBAEs) and evaluated their capacity and underlying mechanisms in protecting murine RAW 264.7 cells from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated inflammation in vitro. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit results showed that GBBAEs significantly inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-113, and interferon-y (INF-y). Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis in- dicated that the mRNA expression levels of IL-6, IL-113, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) were suppressed in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Additionally, Western blot analysis was used to evaluate the relative protein expression levels of COX-2 and nuclear factor-κB p65 (NF-κBp65). All these results suggested the potential use of GBBAEs as a functional food for the treatment of in- flammatory diseases.展开更多

In order to assist my students crack down on such problems, I take up the approach of giving them opportunities to play the active roles in English reading activity and requiring them to write reading response journals and to have frequent discussions in the reading class. The approach aims at improving the students' ability and getting them to be trained and improved effectively in the language skills concerned. The approach has come out with remarkable achievements. My understanding is that the process of learning a foreign language is a process indeed of accumulation, including both the language and culture knowledge. The accumulation can be gained by means of reading a lot, thus improving the students' language competence, enlarging their cultural and language field of vision on the western world. We teachers play the function of bridge leading the students to succeed in mastering and applying English as a practical tool in their life and work to come. This paper introduces what I have been trying to assist my students in solving their problems through my teaching practice during the past years.展开更多

Data analysis of this study can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, a descriptive statistical analysis was conducted based on a sample of 612 respondents. In the second stage, the correlation among content originality, user experience and satisfaction was analyzed based on a sample of 377 mobile news apps users. Findings: Results of the first stage showed that social media and mobile news apps were the most important tools for users to access news, and different types of media were playing complementary roles in information transmission. Users held a positive attitude toward their mobile news reading experience and they described news they read on mobile apps with such words as "interesting", "instant", "positive", "profound", and "ironic". Results of the second stage confirmed our hypothesis that content originality and user experience both had positive impacts on user satisfaction.Research limitations: The questionnaires were distributed entirely online, so the sample may not be representative of the general population being studied and thus undermine the reliability and generalization of the findings to some extent. Moreover, this study adopted only one method(survey) and more methods such as interviews can be used to improve the accuracy of the results.Practical implications: The findings of this study can not only provide insights into a better understanding of users’ mobile reading behavior, but also help mobile information service providers attract more users.Originality/value: This is one of the first studies to explore the effects of content originality and user experience on online news readers’ satisfaction with the mobile apps service.展开更多

Letter-sound knowledge is needed for word decoding development;however questions remain on what types of letter-sound knowledge help children decode simple words [3]. This study investigated the differences in mean number of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words decoded between two groups of children, a letter-sound reading group and non letter-sound reading group. Children aged 4 to 6 in both groups, attempted to decode a variety of simple words such as tan, sit, hen, pig, dot, and fun. Analysis determined word decoding differences existed between the two groups. The alternate hypothesis was accepted;the letter-sound reading group had a significantly higher mean in number of consonant-vowel-consonant words decoded compared to the non letter-sound reading group. The study informs the teaching approaches needed to improve early decoding skills showing letter-sound reading ability is an important step for learning to decode simple consonant-vowel-consonant words.展开更多

文摘Despite much research done on strategy, there still exist several questions unanswered. Not much research is done to examine lower intermediate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' performance on the reading section of the First Certificate of English exam (FCER) in the post strategy instruction period. The results indicate that learners vary not only in terms of their performance on the FCER, hut also on the employed metacognitive strategy. Furthermore, metacognitive strategies are the only predictors that positively predict learners' performance in the FCER.
文摘Background:Individuals with dyslexia present with a variety of reading related deficits including text comprehension, reading speed and word encoding. While previous literature addresses individual components of group differences, the present study compares individuals with dyslexia and normal readers on a variety of eye tracking components,as well as behavioural reading measures. The applied nature of this research allows for a comprehensive understanding of how individuals with dyslexia perceptually encode and process written texts.Using type font(i.e.,Times New Roman vs.OpenDyslexic;a font created to elevate visually specific characteristics of dyslexia)as a mediator,we investigated the group differences in eye movement patterns, text comprehension and reading speed between normal readers and individuals with dyslexia when reading standardized and validated texts designed for a grade six reading comprehension level. Methods:Our 73 participants included 38 normal reading controls and 35 individuals with dyslexia.Participants were administered the symbol search and coding subtests of The Wechsler Adult Scale of Intelligence.Participants then read ten texts from the International Reading Speed Texts:five texts in Times New Roman and five in OpenDyslexic, while binocular eye movements were recorded using a SR Research Eyelink 1000.Results:We found that irrespective of font type, when compared to controls, individuals with dyslexia demonstrated increased re-reading of texts[i.e.,regressions:CI(−0.99,−0.66),Hedges’s gs=−0.83]and number of saccades per trial[CI(−1.42,−1.08),gs=−1.25]as well as increased median fixation duration[CI(−1.15,−0.82),gs=−0.98].The control group had increased reading speed[words per minute:CI(1.48,1.84),gs=1.65],visited less interest areas[CI(−1.48,−1.13),gs=−1.31],and had fewer directional deviations from the horizontal-axis[CI(−0.49,−0.18),gs=−0.33].We found an interaction between text comprehension and font type, with both groups having improved performance with OpenDyslexic. However, results did not show a main effect of group with respect to text comprehension. Conclusions:The lack of group differences in text comprehension illustrates that high-functioning individuals with dyslexia are able to comprehend these elementary level texts, irrespective of font type. However, the erratic nature of their eye movements combined with a slow reading speed suggest that individuals with dyslexia read texts in a different manner;achieving the same understanding as normal readers. Our results suggest that reading speed differences act as compensatory methods in our sample of individuals with dyslexia.
