Exploring the thermal evolution of highly-to over-mature source rocks using Raman spectroscopy and geochemical signatures

This study investigated the heterogeneous responses of organic matter(OM)in highly-to over-mature source rocks during thermal maturation.An integrated analysis was conducted on the Raman spectroscopic and geochemical signatures of shales from the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation and the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation,as well as anthracites from the Lower Permian Shanxi–Formation and the Upper Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation(collectively referred to as the Shanxi Taiyuan Formations).Additionally,burial and thermal evolution modeling was employed to support the analysis.A systematic assessment of Raman spectral parameters(e.g.,the positions and intensity ratio of the D and G bands)revealed robust correlations between the thermal history patterns of source rocks and molecular structural evolution parameters.The subsequent mechanistic quantification demonstrated that the maturation state of the source rocks was subjected to the hierarchical control of three principal factors:Peak heating temperature,the duration of sustained thermal intensity,and effective maturation duration.In addition,comparative analyses demonstrated that the anthracites attained higher structural ordering under sustained thermal conditions.This contrasts with the disordered carbon matrices observed in the intermittently heated shales.Raman spectroscopy further revealed broader variations in the D and G band intensities of the Longmaxi Formation compared to the Qiongzhusi Formation.This difference is associated with their different thermal histories.The thermal burial histories confirm that shales in the Longmaxi Formation underwent thermal exposure at lower peak temperatures over a shorter duration compared to those in the Qiongzhusi Formation.Finally,this study established a maturity calibration model for over-mature source rocks through a systematic correlation between Raman peak height ratios(R_(D/G))and vitrinite reflectance(R_(o)). 展开更多

Many spore-forming Bacillus species can cause serious human diseases,because of accidental Bacillusspore infection.Thus,developing an identification strategy with both high sensitivity and specificity is greatly in demand.In this work,we proposed a novel approach named multi-head self-attention mechanism-guided neural network Raman platform to identify living Bacillus spores within a single-cell resolution.The multi-head self-attention mechanism-guided neural network Raman platform was created by combining single-cell Raman spectroscopy,convolutional neural network(CNN),and multi-head self-attention mechanism.To address the limited size of the original spectra dataset,Gaussian noise-based spectra augmentation was employed to increase the number of single-cell Raman spectra datasets for CNN training.Owing to the assistance of both spectra augmentation and multi-head self-attention mechanism,the obtained prediction accuracy of five Bacillus spore species was further improved from 92.29±0.82%to 99.43±0.15%.To figure out the spectra differences covered by the multi-head self-attention mechanism-guided CNN,the relative classification weight from typical Raman bands was visualized via multi-head self-attention mechanism curve.In the process of spectra augmentation from 0 to 1000,the distribution of relative classification weight varied from a discrete state to a more concentrated phase.More importantly,these highlighted four Raman bands(1017,1449,1576,and 1660 cm^(-1))were assigned large weights,showing that the spectra differences in the Raman bands produced the largest contribution to prediction accuracy.It can be foreseen that,our proposed sorting platform has great potential in accurately identifying Bacillus and its related genera species at a single-cell level. 展开更多

The increasing power density of chips poses a significant challenge in the form of material aging for aluminumfilled polydimethylsiloxane(Al/PDMS)composites,which are widely used in thermal interface materials.Despite the growing importance of this issue,the specific mechanisms behind the interfacial aging process remain elusive,hindering a comprehensive grasp of the aging dynamics in these composites.In our research,we have developed an in-situ Raman aging monitoring system that leverages the non-contact and high-resolution capabilities of Raman spectroscopy to study the interface aging process.Our findings indicate a notable decrease in the intensity of the Raman peak as further cross-linking of the molecules during aging,with the most pronounced decline occurring at the interface between aluminum and PDMS.This insight could potentially elucidate why the interface in composite materials is frequently the site of failure during aging.Our study offers a versatile methodology for investigating the interfacial aging of polymer composites,contributing to a broader understanding of the interface behavior in composite materials at the molecular level. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is a major histological subtype of esophageal cancer.Many molecular genetic changes are associated with its occurrence.Raman spectroscopy has become a new method for the early diagnosis of tumors because it can reflect the structures of substances and their changes at the molecular level.AIM To detect alterations in Raman spectral information across different stages of esophageal neoplasia.METHODS Different grades of esophageal lesions were collected,and a total of 360 groups of Raman spectrum data were collected.A 1D-transformer network model was proposed to handle the task of classifying the spectral data of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.In addition,a deep learning model was applied to visualize the Raman spectral data and interpret their molecular characteristics.RESULTS A comparison among Raman spectral data with different pathological grades and a visual analysis revealed that the Raman peaks with significant differences were concentrated mainly at 1095 cm^(-1)(DNA,symmetric PO,and stretching vibration),1132 cm^(-1)(cytochrome c),1171 cm^(-1)(acetoacetate),1216 cm^(-1)(amide III),and 1315 cm^(-1)(glycerol).A comparison among the training results of different models revealed that the 1Dtransformer network performed best.A 93.30%accuracy value,a 96.65%specificity value,a 93.30%sensitivity value,and a 93.17%F1 score were achieved.CONCLUSION Raman spectroscopy revealed significantly different waveforms for the different stages of esophageal neoplasia.The combination of Raman spectroscopy and deep learning methods could significantly improve the accuracy of classification. 展开更多

Raman spectroscopy offers a great power to detect,analyze and identify molecules,and monitor their temporal dynamics and evolution when combined with single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SM-SERS)substrates.Here we present a SM-SERS scheme that involves simultaneously giant chemical enhancement from WS22D materials,giant electromagnetic enhancement from plasmonic nanogap hot spot,and inhibition of molecular fluorescence influence under near-infrared laser illumination.Remarkably we find Coulomb attraction between analyte and gold nanoparticle can trigger spontaneous formation of molecule-hotspot pairing with high precision,stability and robustness.The scheme has enabled realization of universal,robust,fast,and large-scale uniform SM-SERS detection for three Raman molecules of rhodamine B,rhodamine 6G,and crystal violet with a very low detection limit of 10−16 M and at a very fast spectrum acquisition time of 50 ms. 展开更多

Lithium metal batteries(LMBs)have attracted great intention due to the high energy density[1].Among various battery technologies,lithium-sulfur(Li-S)batteries are also very unique but important due to its high energy density,low cost and available sources[2].Although Li-s batteries exhibit high energy density,the cycling life is poor,especially for large-capacity pouch cells[3].The cycling performance of Li-s batteries is crucially determined by 16-electron complex sulfur reduction reaction(SRR)from S_(8)molecules to Li_(2)S,solid,which involves the multiple potential interwoven branches among lithium polysulfide intermediates(LiPS,e.g.,S_(8),Li_(2)S_(8),Li_(2)S_(6),Li_(2)S_(4)and Li_(2)S)[4].The obvious shuttle for soluble Lips across the cathode and anode leads to the battery capacity fading.Thus,it is necessary to decrease the accumulation of soluble Lips in the electrolyte through catalysts fastening the key conversion step from high-order polysulfides to insoluble Li_(2)S_(2)/Li_(2)S.Although some effort has been devoted to catalyze SRR,the complex mechanism remains unclear.To address this issue,Duan et al.tried to solve it based on nitrogen,sulfur,dualdoped holey graphene framework(N,S-HGF)electrocatalyst in Nature[5]. 展开更多

Multiple adulteration detection of olive oils by Raman spectroscopy

The increasing prevalence of multiple adulteration in olive oil affects product authenticity and market integrity.Therefore,it is necessary to develop advanced methods to detect the multiple adulteration.In this study,a portable Raman spectrometer was employed to address this issue,with adulterant mixtures using a D-optimal mixture design to ensure representative samples.The results showed that principal component analysis(PCA)was unable to distinguish authentic olive oils from adulterated ones,whereas partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PLS-DA)successfully differentiated the two groups.These findings demonstrated the technical feasibility of combining Raman spectroscopy with PLS-DA to detect multiple adulteration in olive oil,offering a promising method for portable,rapid authentication to counter increasingly sophisticated fraud in the edible oil industry. 展开更多

Vanadium oxide(VO_(X))with tunable interlayer spacing and variable valence states of vanadium ions offers tremendous opportunities in aqueous electrochromic devices but is still challenging.Herein,a poly aniline(PANI)-VO_(X)composite material has been designed,increasing the conductivity and the structure stability.Owning to these virtues,the PANI-VO_(X)composite material achieves a high capacitance of 332 mAh·g^(-1)at 0.1 A·g^(-1)and a superior cycling performance(72%ΔT retention after 500 cycles).Importantly,in-situ Raman spectroscopy has been utilized to reveal the rapid formation of Zn_(3)(OH)_(2)V_(2)O_(7)·nH_(2)O and the reversible change of PANI-VO_(X),which can further assist the development of aqueous electrochromic devices.This work highlights the understanding of the Zn^(2+)electrochromic mechanism and sheds some light on organic-inorganic composite electrochromic materials. 展开更多

The lattice dynamics of a high Al composition semiconductor alloy,Al_(0.86)Ga_(0.14)N,in comparison with intrinsic GaN and AlN are studied by Stokes/anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range of 85–823 K.The phonon anharmonic effect in Al_(0.86)Ga_(0.14)N is found to be stronger than that in GaN,revealing low thermal conductivity in the semiconductor alloy.Multi-phonon coupling behavior is analyzed by both Stokes Raman and anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy.It is interesting to find that the anti-Stokes scattering exhibits stronger three-phonon coupling than the Stokes scattering,which may be due to the fact that the anti-stokes scattering process is generated from an excited state and the scattered photons have higher energies.The Stokes/anti-Stokes temperature correction factor β for Raman modes in Al_(0.86)Ga_(0.14)N alloy are all smaller than those of the corresponding intrinsic modes in GaN and AlN.The reasons for the difference in b can be attributed to three aspects,including the equipment setups,materials properties(the binding energy)and the coupling strength of Raman scattering and the sample. 展开更多

The effect of silicon doping on the residual stress of CVD diamond films is examined using both X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The examined Si-doped diamond films are deposited on WC-Co substrates in a home-made bias-enhanced HFCVD apparatus. Ethyl silicate (Si(OC2H5)4) is dissolved in acetone to obtain various Si/C mole ratio ranging from 0.1% to 1.4% in the reaction gas. Characterizations with SEM and XRD indicate increasing silicon concentration may result in grain size decreasing and diamond [110] texture becoming dominant. The residual stress values of as-deposited Si-doped diamond films are evaluated by both sin2ψ method, which measures the (220) diamond Bragg diffraction peaks using XRD, with ψ-values ranging from 0° to 45°, and Raman spectroscopy, which detects the diamond Raman peak shift from the natural diamond line at 1332 cm-1. The residual stress evolution on the silicon doping level estimated from the above two methods presents rather good agreements, exhibiting that all deposited Si-doped diamond films present compressive stress and the sample with Si/C mole ratio of 0.1% possesses the largest residual stress of ~1.75 GPa (Raman) or ~2.3 GPa (XRD). As the silicon doping level is up further, the residual stress reduces to a relative stable value around 1.3 GPa. 展开更多

Raman spectrum of molten cryolite was recorded. Based on the new understanding of the scattering coefficients, contents of various structural entities in acidic NaF-AlF3 melts at 942-1 024 ℃ in previous research were reanalyzed. The new quantitative analysis results show that when cryolite ratio(CR) is less than 2, AlF4- is the dominant anion in the melts, and its mole fraction is about 0.70 for melts with CR=1.5 and 0.50 for melts with CR=2. When CR is more than 2.5, the mole fraction of AlF6^3- is relatively large, which is around 0.45 for melts with CR=2.5. Ionic structure of Na3AlF6-Al2O3 melts was investigated by UV-Raman spectroscopy. Octahedral AlF6^3- and tetrahedral AlF4- are proved to exist with possible partial replacement of F- by O^2-. Al2O2F4^2- with a large scattering coefficient also exists in the melts in which alumina concentration is more than 4% (mass fraction). The increase of temperature causes blue-shift of the bands in the Raman spectra. 展开更多

Nitrogen hydrate samples were synthesized using liquid nitrogen and powder ice at 16 MPa and 253 K. Confocal laser Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the characteristics of nitrogen clathrate hydrates. The results show that the Raman peaks of N-N and O-H stretching vibration in nitrogen hydrates are observed at 2322.4 and 3092.1 cm^-1, respectively, which are very similar to those in natural air clathrate hydrates. For comparison, we measured the Raman peaks of N-N stretching vibration both in liquid nitrogen and nitrogen molecules saturated water, which appear at 2326.6 and 2325.0 cm^-1, respectively. The Raman spectroscopic observations on the dissociation process suggest that nitrogen molecules occupy both the large and small cages in nitrogen clathrate hydrates. However, only one Raman peak is observed for N N stretching vibration because the difference of the environment of nitrogen molecules between large and small cages is too small to be differentiated by Raman spectroscopy. 展开更多

The limited penetration of photons in biological tissue restricts the deep-tissue detection and imaging application.The micro-scale spatially offset Raman spectroscopy(micro-SORS)with an optical fiber probe,colleting photons from deeper regions by offsetting the position of laser excitation from the collection optics in a range of hundreds of microns,shows great potential to be integrated with endoscopy for inside-body noninvasive detection by circumventing this restric-tion,particularly with the combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS).However,a detailed tissue penetration study of micro-SORS in combination with SERS is still lacking.Herein,we compared the signal decay of enhanced Raman nanotags through the tissue phantom of agarose gel and the biological tissue of porcine muscle in the near-infrared(NIR)region using a portable Raman spectrometer with a micro-SORS probe(2.1 mm in diameter)and a conventional hand-held probe(9.7mm in diameter).Two kinds of Raman nanotags were prepared from gold nanorods decorated with the nonresonant(4-nitrobenzenethiol)or resonant Raman reporter molecules(IR-780 iodide).The SERS measurements show that the penetration depths of two Raman nanotags are both over 2 cm in agarose gel and 3 mm in porcine muscle.The depth could be improved to over 4 cm in agarose gel and 5 mm in porcine tissue when using the micro-SORS system.This demonstrates the superiority of optical-fiber micro-SORS system over the conventional Raman detection for the detection of nanotags in deeper layers in the turbid medium and biological tissue,offering the possibility of combining the micro-SORS technique with SERS for noninvasive in vivo endoscopy-integrated clinical application. 展开更多

The quality of the scanning tip is crucial for tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(TERS)experiments towards large signal enhancement and high spatial resolution.In this work,we report a controllable fabrication method to prepare TERS-active tips by modifying the tip apex at the atomic scale,and propose two important criteria to in-situ judge the tip’s TERS activity for tip-enhanced Raman measurements.One criterion is based on the downshift of the first image potential state to monitor the coupling between the far-field incident laser and near-field plasmon;the other is based on the appearance of the low-wavenumber Raman peaks associated with an atomistic protrusion at the tip apex to judge the coupling efficiency of emissions from the near field to the far field.This work provides an effective method to quickly fabricate and judge TERS-active tips before real TERS experiments on target molecules and other materials,which is believed to be instrumental for the development of TERS and other tip-enhanced spectroscopic techniques. 展开更多

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS) based on two-dimensional(2 D) materials has attracted great attention over the past decade. Compared with metallic materials, which enhance Raman signals via the surface plasmon effect, 2 D materials integrated on silicon substrates are ideal for use in the fabrication of plasmon-free SERS chips, with the advantages of outstanding fluorescence quenching capability, excellent biomolecular compatibility, tunable Fermi levels, and potentially lowcost material preparation. Moreover, recent studies have shown that the limits of detection of 2 D-material-based SERS may be comparable with those of metallic substrates, which has aroused significant research interest. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances in SERS chips based on 2 D materials. As several excellent reviews of graphene-enhanced Raman spectroscopy have been published in the past decade, here, we focus only on 2 D materials beyond graphene, i.e., transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, hexagonal boron nitride, 2 D titanium carbide or nitride, and their heterostructures. We hope that this paper can serve as a useful reference for researchers specializing in 2 D materials, spectroscopy, and diverse applications related to chemical and biological sensing. 展开更多

Angle-resolved polarized Raman(ARPR) spectroscopy can be utilized to assign the Raman modes based on crystal symmetry and Raman selection rules and also to characterize the crystallographic orientation of anisotropic materials.However, polarized Raman measurements can be implemented by several different configurations and thus lead to different results. In this work, we systematically analyze three typical polarization configurations: 1) to change the polarization of the incident laser, 2) to rotate the sample, and 3) to set a half-wave plate in the common optical path of incident laser and scattered Raman signal to simultaneously vary their polarization directions. We provide a general approach of polarization analysis on the Raman intensity under the three polarization configurations and demonstrate that the latter two cases are equivalent to each other. Because the basal plane of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite(HOPG) exhibits isotropic feature and its edge plane is highly anisotropic, HOPG can be treated as a modelling system to study ARPR spectroscopy of twodimensional materials on their basal and edge planes. Therefore, we verify the ARPR behaviors of HOPG on its basal and edge planes at three different polarization configurations. The orientation direction of HOPG edge plane can be accurately determined by the angle-resolved polarization-dependent G mode intensity without rotating sample, which shows potential application for orientation determination of other anisotropic and vertically standing two-dimensional materials and other materials. 展开更多

As a powerful and sensitive tool for the characterization of zeolite building units,UV Raman spectroscopy has been used to monitor interzeolite transformation from FAU to CHA and MFI zeolites.The results show that the behavior of double 6-membered rings(D6Rs)in the FAU zeolite framework plays an important role during the formation of the target product in the interzeolite transformation.For the transformation of FAU to CHA,because both zeolites contain the same D6R units,direct transformation occurs,in which the D6Rs were largely unchanged.In contrast,for the transformation of FAU to MFI,the D6Rs can be divided into two single 6-membered rings(S6Rs),which further assembled into the MFI structure.In this crystallization,5-membered rings(5Rs)are only observed in the MFI framework formation,suggesting that the basic building units in the transformation of FAU to MFI are S6Rs rather than 5Rs.These insights will be helpful for further understanding of the interzeolite transformation. 展开更多

Marine sediment is the primary sink of microplastics and is an indicator of pollution levels.However,although there are well-developed detection methods,detection is rarely focused on lowmicrometer-sized particles,mainly due to technique limitations.In this study,a simplifi ed process omitting digestion procedures was developed to pretreat microplastics obtained from marine sediment and was coupled with micro-Raman spectroscopy to identify microplastics.Based on the overall analysis of the characteristic peak assignments,a Raman spectral reference library was constructed for 18 types of plastic.In addition,the eff ects of the measurement parameters were systematically described.Field research was then conducted to validate the developed process and investigate microplastic contamination in Huiquan Bay,Qingdao,China.This simplifi ed process could retain the original appearance of microparticles and accomplish the detection of<500μm-sized microplastics in environmental samples.Microplastics in the size range of 10-150μm accounted for 76%of all microplastics,and 56%of the total particles was particles smaller than 50μm.Polypropylene(42%)and polyethylene(20%)were predominant components of the particles.In particular,polypropylene particles smaller than 10μm were identifi ed in marine sediment.This work demonstrates that Raman spectroscopy is not only an eff ective tool for detecting environmental particles but also highly applicable for identifying particles extracted from marine sediment. 展开更多

Magnetic polyphosphazene(MPZS) particles coated by Ag nanoparticles(MPZS-Ag) have been developed as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS) substrates for sensitive detection of melamine in aqueous solutions and milk samples.5,5’-Dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid)(DTNB) was used as model analyte to test the SERS activity of the MPZS-Ag particles.The prepared MPZS-Ag particles possess both magnetic responsiveness and excellent SERS properties.SERS detection of different concentrations of melamine aqueous solutions and spiked milk samples were performed by the MPZS-Ag particles.The limit of detection(LOD) of the melamine in aqueous solutions was 10^-7 mol/L(0.0126 mg/L) and 0.6 mg/L in real milk samples using the MPZS-Ag particles as SERS substrates.The LOD of the melamine are much lower than the safety values of Food and Drug Administration and Codex Alimentarius Commission.These results indicate that the MPZS-Ag particles have promising application prospect for SERS analysis in food safety fields. 展开更多
