Introduction: Lymphaticovenous malformations (LVM) are benign congenital anomalies of the venous and lymphatic systems, frequently presenting as complex masses in the head and neck region of children. While the clinical features of LVM are well-documented, there is a lack of comprehensive studies addressing their holistic impact on affected children and their families. Objectives: This qualitative study explores the physical, psychological, and social challenges faced by children with head and neck LVM and the emotional and financial burdens experienced by their parents. It also evaluates the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary approach in managing these challenges. Methods: Over seven months, data were collected through monthly multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics, bi-monthly tele-clinics, and continuous email communication. The MDT included interventional radiologists, surgeons, psychologists, physiotherapists, nurse specialists, and administrative staff. Additional specialists were consulted as needed. The study focused on children’s physical symptoms (appearance concerns, pain, infections, bleeding, heaviness, tongue involvement), psychological and social issues (bullying, self-esteem, social isolation, school absenteeism), and parental concerns. Management strategies and their outcomes were also documented. Results: Children with LVM experienced significant distress due to visible deformities, chronic pain, and recurrent infections, leading to social isolation, bullying, and low self-esteem. Parents reported constant stress over their child’s well-being, concerns about social interactions, and financial strain from taking time off work for care and medical appointments. Interventions—including surgical procedures and interventional radiology treatments like sclerotherapy, counseling, laser treatments, and camouflage techniques—resulted in reported improvements across physical, psychological, and social domains. Conclusions: LVM significantly impacts the biopsychosocial well-being of both children and their parents. A multidisciplinary approach is essential for effective management, addressing not only the medical but also the psychological and social needs of affected families. Future studies with larger, multi-center cohorts are recommended to further validate these findings and explore new therapeutic strategies. 展开更多

Background:A major side effect of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy(DR),which can cause irreparable blindness if left untreated.Because of the additional psychological and social strains, controlling comorbidities like DR becomes crucial for cancer patients, particularly those receiving treatments like chemotherapy. Both the patient and their caretakers may have severe effects from vision impairment, including increased anxiety, depression, and a lower quality of life. One can reduce these psychological pressures by facilitating prompt intervention, early identification, and categorization of DR.Methods:This work uses a metaheuristic optimization technique to offer a sophisticated, automated categorization system for DR.The system combines Attention AlexNet with an Improved Nutcracker Optimizer, which optimizes the weights and hyperparameters of deep learning models to improve classification accuracy. Results:The approach achieves high classification accuracy of 99.43%and enhanced precision and recall when tested on two popular image datasets,APTOS-2019 and EyePacs. Conclusions:By addressing the technological improvement in DR detection, this work contributes to the multidisciplinary approach of psycho-oncology and helps lessen the psychological distress that cancer patients experience when they lose their eyesight.Ultimately,it supports the general well-being and mental health of people facing diabetes-related problems and cancer by highlighting the significance of incorporating cutting-edge machine learning technologies into clinical practice. 展开更多

This editorial discusses Thompson et al's original article, which is published in the most recent edition of the World Journal of Clinical Oncology and sheds critical light on the intertwined issues of health anxiety and work loss in individuals diagnosed with serrated polyposis syndrome(SPS).SPS is rare, characterized by the development of multiple serrated colorectal polyps. This editorial provides an overview of SPS,including its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, management strategies, and the psychosocial impact.SPS is linked to molecular alterations, which drive carcinogenesis.Colonoscopy and histological analysis are used for diagnosis.Genetic testing is also considered where there is a family history.Quality of life can be greatly impacted by the psychosocial effects of SPS,especially health anxiety.Further understanding of the molecular mechanisms and creating individualized surveillance are required. 展开更多

The COVID-19 pandemic has struck nations worldwide, pushing worldwide health and socioeconomic systems to extreme limits.Various factors, such as drastic alterations in public environments, prolonged quarantine, revenue loss, and anxiety of disease contraction, have caused mental turmoil.Although there was a need to cope with an excess of psychological strain among the public,post-COVID patients, and those with a previously diagnosed psychiatric condition, mental health programs faced a substantial decline in services, mirroring the dramatic rise in psychological issues.Interestingly, certain coping strategies play protective or deleterious effects on mental health outcomes. Moreover, social media exposure has played a double-edged role in the mental health of the public during the pandemic, leaving grounds for further debates.Protean cultural themes have taken center stage in the discussion on social resilience and compliance to COVID-19 measures, driving their impact through cer-tain work ethics, social capital, and public attitudes in different societies. On the other hand, exceedingly rising poverty rates cemented the deleterious economic impact of the pandemic.Attention has been called to the racial implications of the pandemic, driving millions of individuals with low socioeconomic position(SEP)and belong-ing to minority groups out of the paid workforce.Interestingly,we turn attention to an array of elements impli-cated in this dramatic effect, such as public transport, living arrangements, and health insurance coverage among these vulnerable groups. We attempt to address the mechanisms COVID-19 channeled its mental health and socioeconomic impacts by explaining the risk factors and pave the way for stronger crisis management in the future by evaluating the socioeconomic and psychological effects in stark detail. 展开更多

Beyond posing a major health crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted profound psychological, social, and economic impacts on populations worldwide.Mass quarantines and social isolation have affected the mental health of the wider population, exacerbating other stressors, including fear of the virus and its repercussions, general uncertainty, and financial insecurity. The pandemic has challenged the broader delivery of healthcare––ranging from the need to triage limited hospital resources to balancing risk mitigation with maintaining medical care.Specific to gastroenterology, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has not only been associated with complicating extant medical conditions of the gastrointestinal(GI)tract, but has also forced a shift in the practice of gastroenterology by patients, families, and healthcare providers alike. The gastroenterology field has been required to adapt its practices to minimize the possibility of viral spread while still upholding patient care.Healthcare practitioners in GI have helped to treat COVID-19 patients, stratified inpatient and outpatient visits and procedures, and shifted to telemedicine.Still,as is the case with much of the general population, healthcare providers working in GI practice or endoscopy have faced personal and professional stressors, mental health difficulties, social isolation, financial pressures, and familial burdens––all of which can take a toll on practitioners and,by extension, the provision of GI care overall. This article will highlight how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the psychological wellbeing, social engagement, and economic conditions of the public, healthcare providers, and GI professionals specifically.Recommendations for strategies that can continue GI services while maintaining safety for both caregivers and patients are put forth to help uphold critical GI care during this worldwide crisis. 展开更多

In May 2024,the UK revised fertlit law to permit HIV-positive individuals with an undetectable viral load to donate gametes, sparking global controversy. This bold legislative move aims to challenge existing stigmas and enhance reproductive rights. However,it also raises critical questions regarding long-term psychosocial health impacts on offspring and the necessity of comprehensive informed consent. The amendmenthighlights the need for clear legal frameworks addressing liability and compensation mechanisms, ensuring protection for all parties involved while promoting reproductive justice.Furthermore, the potential for'reproductive tourism'due to jurisdictional disparities necessitates cross-border mutual understandings and guidelines.Ensuring confidentiality and privacy in the context of HIV status disclosure poses additional challenges, requiring strict safeguards against breaches.Consequently, despite this reform being a commendable step towards destigmatising HIN,robust measures are essential for managing associated risks, safeguarding reproductive autonomy and fostering public trust. 展开更多
