This study examines the predictive roles of foreign language classroom anxiety(FLCA),foreign language enjoyment(FLE),and foreign language boredom(FLB)in English achievement among Chinese senior high school students.Despite extensive research on anxiety in language learning, less attention has been given to boredom, and the combined effects of these three emotions on English achievement remain under-explored,particularly among high school students in China. To address these gaps,a sample of 142 students from Guangzhou was surveyed using questionnaires to assess their emotional experiences and English achievement. The research found that FLE exhibited a positive correlation with academic performance, while FLCA and FLB showed negative associations.Notably,FLE was the most significant predictor of English achievement, followed by FLCA and FLB.Gender differences were observed, with male students reporting significantly higher levels of environmental enjoyment, while female students experienced significantly greater communication anxiety. On this basis, this paper offers suggestions on how to enhance senior high school students’FLE while mitigating FLCA and FLB,thereby promoting more effective and sustained English learning. 展开更多

Our study aimed to determine the effect of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio on the prognosis of adult patients with acute stroke. We searched the Web of Science,PubMed,Embase,Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases and selected all of the potentially eligible studies. From the included studies,we extracted characteristics such as the stroke type and acquisition time until routine blood collection and the odds ratios across studies. The 95%confidence intervals and odds ratios were pooled to calculate the effect size for the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio in acute stroke patients. We defined poor function outcomes according to the modified Rankin Scale≥3 or Glasgow Outcome Scale<3.Thirteen studies with 4443 patients were included in our analysis, including 7 ischemic and 6 hemorrhagic stroke studies. The pooled odds ratios for poor functional outcome at 3 months with a higher neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio in acute ischemic and hemorrhagic patients were 1.689(95%CI=1.184-2.409,p<0.001)and 1.125(95%CI=1.022-1.239,p<0.001),respectively,and the overall pooled odds ratio for poor functional outcome following stroke was 1.257(95%CI=1.146-1.379,p<0.001).At the same time, the overall combined odds ratio for death at 3 months was 1.632(95%CI=1.155-2.306,p<0.001).The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio,an easily calculated marker, plays a predictive role in the short-term outcomes of adult patients(mean age≥50 years)following acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. 展开更多

AIM: To study the association between self-reported peptic ulcer and childhood adversities.METHODS: The Health and Social Support Study (HeS-Sup) population consisted of a stratif ied random sample drawn from the Finnish Population Register in four age groups: 20-24, 30-34, 40-44 and 50-54. The survey was carried out by postal questionnaire during 1998, with a response rate of 40.0%. A follow-up questionnaire was sent during 2003 to all those who responded to the f irst. Altogether 19 626 individuals returned the follow-up questionnaire; a response rate of 75.8%. The subjects were asked whether a doctor had told them that they have or have had peptic ulcer. The analyses covered those who responded aff irmatively to both the baseline and the follow-up enquiries (n = 718). Those not re-porting a peptic ulcer in either of the two questionnaires (n = 17 677) were taken as controls. The subjects were further requested (through six questions) to think about their childhood adversities.RESULTS: The most common adversities mentioned were long-lasting financial difficulties in the family, serious conflicts in the family, and a family member seriously or chronically ill. All the adversities reported, except parental divorce, were more common among peptic ulcer patients than among controls (P values varied between < 0.001 and 0.003). Age- and sex-adjusted odds ratios (OR) of childhood adversities in the multivariate logistic analysis for self-reported pep-tic ulcer varied between 1.45 and 2.01. Adjusting for smoking, heavy drinking, stress and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use had no further influence (ORs between 1.22 and 1.73).CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that childhood adversities maintain a connection with and have a predictive role in the development of peptic ulcer. 展开更多

We investigate the role of clouds and radiation in the general circulation of the atmosphere using a model designed for 30-day predictions.Comprehensive verifications of 30-day predictions for the 500 hPa geo- potential height field have been carried out, using the data from ECMWF objective analyses that cover the period from May 5 to June 3,1982.We perform three model simulations, including experiments with interac- tive cloud formation, without clouds, and without radiative heating. The latter two experiments allow us to study the effects of cloud/radiation interactions and feedbacks on the predicted vertical velocity, and the meridional and zonal wind profiles, averaged over a 30-day period. We demonstrate that the Hadley circulation is maintained by the presence of clouds. The radiative cooling in the atmosphere intensifies the vertical motion in low latitudes and,to some extent, also strengthens the overall meridional circulation. The meridional winds are correctly reproduced in the model if clouds are incorporated. The zonal winds are significantly affected by clouds and radiative cooling.Without an appropriate incor- poration of these physical elements, the model results would deviate significantly from observations. The presence of clouds strengthens the westerlies in middle and high levels. In May,the northerly movement of the jet stream over eastern Asia is,in part, associated with the presence of clouds. 展开更多
