Six (6) oil samples were obtained from seeds of three (3) geographical origins. The identification and quantification of fatty acids and the polyphenolic profile were carried out by GC-MS and HPLC-UV, respectively. Analysis of fatty acid methyl esters allowed the identification and quantification of 18 fatty acids. Oils from unwashed seeds were richer in palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0), oleic (C18:1) and arachidic (C20:0) acids. In addition, HPLC-UV analysis at 279 nm shows that oils from unwashed seeds are richer in tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol and caffeic acid. With regard to the polyphenolic profile, gallic acid and quercetin were not detected in these baobab oils. Principal component analysis of fatty acid and phenolic compound content showed that oils from unwashed seeds would best preserve their chemical and associated potential bioactive characteristics.展开更多

文摘Neoadjuvant therapy(NAT)has become the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced breast cancer and stage II-III HER2-positive(HER2+)or triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC)1,2.It is essential to accurately mark the primary breast tumor and positive axillary lymph nodes(ALNs)prior to NAT to ensure precise surgical excision, guide axillary downstaging, and guarantee reliable lesion retrieval for pathologic evaluation3.The false-negative rate of sentinel lymph node biopsy(SLNB)after NAT can be reduced to<10%by applying modalities, such as the identification of≥3 sentinel lymph nodes(SLNs)with dual-mapping techniques or removal of the marked lymph node with target axillary dissection(TAD)according to the ASCO,NCCN,and CBCS guidelines3-5.However,there is a lack of consensus regarding the optimal methods and materials for accurate marking6,7.Conventional techniques include clip placement, guidewire localization, and carbon or ink tattooing, whereas wireless technologies, such as MagseedR,radiofrequency identification tags,SAVI SCOUTR,and radioactive iodine-125(125I)seeds,have also been adopted.Traditional marking techniques have a localization failure rate of approximately 10%.In contrast, the use of 125I seeds(with a radiation dose of 0.1-0.3 mCi)has significantly improved localization accuracy8,9.Nevertheless,owing to radioactive properties, concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact of 125I seed marking on assessing the pathologic complete response(pCR)after NAT10.Moreover,whether the influence of 125I seed marking on pCR could lead to suboptimal adjuvant treatment decisions and potentially compromise long-term oncologic outcomes has not been established. To investigate the potential impact of 125I seed placement on the pCR rate and long-term outcomes in breast cancer patients receiving NAT,we conducted a retrospective cohort study utilizing propensity score matching(PSM).

文摘The cleanliness of seed cotton plays a critical role in the pre-treatment of cotton textiles, and the removal of impurity during the harvesting process directly determines the quality and market value of cotton textiles.By fusing band combination optimization with deep learning, this study aims to achieve more efficient and accurate detection of film impurities in seed cotton on the production line.By applying hyperspectral imaging and a one-dimensional deep learning algorithm,we detect and classify impurities in seed cotton after harvest. The main categories detected include pure cotton, conveyor belt, film covering seed cotton, and film adhered to the conveyor belt. The proposed method achieves an impurity detection rate of 99.698%.To further ensure the feasibility and practical application potential of this strategy,we compare our results against existing mainstream methods. In addition, the model shows excellent recognition performance on pseudo-color images of real samples. With a processing time of 11.764μs per pixel from experimental data,it shows a much improved speed requirement while maintaining the accuracy of real production lines. This strategy provides an accurate and efficient method for removing impurities during cotton processing.

文摘Population shrinkage of alpine cushion plants with ongoing climate warming has been empirically confirmed.Since cushion plants play important roles in sustaining alpine plant community and ecosystem functions, their population dynamics may directly influence the future alpine ecosystems. However, little is known about how climate warming affect cushion population recruitment, especially at early life-history stages. In this study,we conducted a laboratory simulation of climate warming to detect the effects of warming temperature and associated moisture and light changes on seed germination and seedling growth of the typical alpine cushion plant Arenaria oreophila. Results suggested that increasing temperature indeed exerted strong constraints on the population recruitment processes.Specifically, increased temperatures could quickly initialize seed germination(4e6 days at higher temperatures vs.29 e32 days at low temperature, respectively, after sowing),accelerate them to reach the maximum germination percentage(9e19 days at higher temperatures vs.57e86 days at low temperature, respectively, after sowing)and significantly accelerate seedling growth rate. However, higher temperatures accelerated seedling mortality(more than 80%).In addition, lower light availability also increased seedling mortality though it could generally increase the final seed germination percentage. The effects of water might be dependent on temperature and light. All results suggested that cushion A.oreophila is quite sensitive to climate warming which strongly constrains its seedling establishment process. We,therefore, speculate that the continuing climate warming in future will exert uncertain risks in the persistence of cushion A.oreophila, possibly by constraining the process of seedling recruitments.

文摘Nigella sativa L.seeds have been traditionally utilized in Chinese folk medicine for centuries to treat vitiligo. This study revealed that the ethanolic extract of Nigella sativa L.(HZC)enhances melanogenesis and mitigates oxidative stress-induced cellular senescence and dysfunction in melanocytes. In accordance with established protocols, the ethanol fraction from Nigella sativa L.seeds was extracted, concentrated, and lyophilized to evaluate its herbal effects via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT)assays, tyrosinase activity evaluation, measurement of cellular melanin contents, scratch assays,senescence-associatedβ-galactosidase(SA-β-gal)staining,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),and Western blot analysis for expression profiling of experimentally relevant proteins. The results indicated that HZC significantly enhanced tyrosinase activity and melanin content while notably increasing the protein expression levels of Tyr,Mitf, and gp100 in B16F10 cells.Furthermore,HZC effectively mitigated oxidative stress-induced cellular senescence, improved melanocyte condition, and rectified various functional impairments associated with melanocyte dysfunction. These findings suggest that HZC increases melanin synthesis in melanocytes through the activation of the MAPK,PKA,and Wnt signaling pathways. In addition,HZC attenuates oxidative damage induced by H2O2 therapy by activating the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2-antioxidant response element(Nrf2-ARE)pathway and enhancing the activity of downstream antioxidant enzymes, thus preventing premature senescence and dysfunction in melanocytes.
文摘The effect of coix seed flour(0%–25%)on the rheological and structural properties of wheat dough and noodle quality was investigated. The addition of coix seed flour was found to enhance the elasticity of dough, which may be attributed to the fact that small starch particles increase the filling capacity within the dough matrix. This increase subsequently resulted in more complete and uniform structure of dough. Moreover, setback viscosity rose to 1095 cP.The rapid water absorption of coix seed starch led to changes in the secondary structure of proteins in dough. The proportion ofβ-sheet markedly increased, whereas the proportion ofα-helix decreased with increasing level of coix seed flour substitution.Meanwhile, coix seed flour substitution significantly reduced the estimated glycemic index of noodles.Correlation analysis revealed that pasting parameters had significant effects on the evaluation of noodle quality. This study provides a foundation for researchers to substitute wheat flour with coix seed flour.

文摘Pentatricopeptide repeat(PPR)proteins are a large group of eukaryote-specific RNA-binding proteins that play pivotal roles in plant organelle gene expression. Here,we report the function of PPR21 in mitochondrial intron splicing and its role in maize kernel development.PPR21 is a typical P-type PPR protein targeted to mitochondria. The ppr21 mutants are arrested in embryogenesis and endosperm development, leading to embryo lethality.Null mutations of PPR21 reduce the splicing efficiency of nad2 intron 1,2,and 4 and impair the assembly and activity of mitochondrial complex I.Previous studies show that the P-type PPR protein EMP12 is required for the splicing of identical introns. However, our protein interaction analyses reveal that PPR21 does not interact with EMP12.Instead,both PPR21 and EMP12 interact with the small MutS-related(SMR)domain-containing PPR protein 1(PPR-SMR1)and the short P-type PPR protein 2(SPR2).PPR-SMR1 interacts with SPR2,and both proteins are required for the splicing of many introns in mitochondria, including nad2 intron 1,2,and 4.These results suggest that a PPR21-(PPR-SMR1/SPR2)-EMP12 complex is involved in the splicing of nad2 introns in maize mitochondria.
文摘The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of baobab seed washing and origin on the chemical composition of the oil extracted by pressing. Principal component analysis of fatty acid and phenolic compound content showed that oils from unwashed seeds would best preserve their chemical and associated potential bioactive characteristics.

文摘Seed dispersal is a pivotal process in seed plant life cycle, owing to its effects on seed germination, seedling survival, population recruitment, and diversity maintenance in the entire community(Howe and Smallwood,1982;Rogers et al.,2021).There are diverse dispersal modes, such as anemochory(wind-driven dispersal),hydrochory(water-mediated dispersal),autochory(self-dispersal),and zoochory, which relies on a diverse array of animals for seed dispersal(Howe and Smallwood,1982).It is widely known that these varying dispersal modes impose selective pressures on many seed and fruit traits, especially the seed size,a key trait which is associated with multiple stages of the life cycle of plants, such as dispersal, germination, and establishment, particularly during early development(Leishman et al.,2000).
文摘【Background】The application of beneficial-microbial seed soaking prior to sowing represents a novel technology that has not been employed in Lanzhou lily cultivation. We conducted an experiment to explore the impact of this soaking method on the fungal and bacterial community structures using next-generation sequencing technology(NGS).【Methods】Lily bulbs were soaked in a seed treating agent containing beneficial microbes(SP treatment)for 4 hours.Subsequently, they were planted in soil in July and sampled in September to assess plant growth, rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties, and microorganism community structures. In addition,we employed the software PICRUSt and FUNGuild to predict bacterial pathways and fungal functions.【Results】Under SP treatment, there were significant alterations in fungi and bacteria community structures, accompanied by improved soil nutrient status.Notably, the relative abundance of dominant microorganism groups, such as the fungi Basidiomycota,Pseudeurotium,Cladophialophora,Microascus, and Dactylonectria,as well as the bacteria Proteobacteria,Chloroflexi,Ochrobactrium,Lysobacter, and RB41,underwent notable changes.Microorganism function prediction results indicated a reduction in pathotrophic fungi(including plant pathogens)and an increase in endophytic and saprotrophic fungi under SP treatment.Among the top 20 metabolism pathways,80%were upregulated in SP treatment compared to the CK.【Conclusions】Seed soaking with beneficial microbial strain promotes the growth of Lanzhou lily bulbs. The beneficial microorganisms play a crucial role in regulating soil microbial structures, enhancing the accumulation of endophytic fungi, reducing the abundance of pathogens, and improving soil functions.Furthermore, specific microbial groups are found to be involved in maintaining soil health.

文摘Mimetic seeds attract birds to disperse seeds mainly by mimicking fleshy fruits or arillate seeds, however, they provide little nutritive reward for bird dispersers. The key characteristics of mimetic seeds are conspicuous seed color, hard seed coat, certain toxic secondary metabolites, and perhaps smooth waxy layer. In this review,we discuss the global distribution of mimetic seeds, the interaction of mimetic seeds with bird dispersers, and secondary metabolites that underlie key characteristics of mimetic seeds.Mimetic-seed species mainly occur in the tropics, with large numbers distributed along coastal areas. The interaction between mimetic-seed species and bird dispersers can be antagonistic, mutualistic,or both. These interactions are generally established by conspicuous visual cues and hard tactile cues from mimetic seeds. The formation and variation of key characteristics of mimetic seeds may contribute to the metabolism of several kind of secondary compounds. Here,we also discuss mimetic-seed dispersal in the context of an evolutionary game, and propose several aspects of mimetic-seed dispersal that remain unstudied. While this review is based on preliminary findings and does not account for other potential influencing factors such as climate,it is expected to contribute to an improved understanding of mimetic-seed dispersal.
