Polymer-electrolyte-based solid-state Li metal batteries with high-voltage Ni-rich cathodes are promising energy storage technologies owing to their favorable security and high energy densities. However, operating in wide temperature range and at high voltage is a tough challenge for them.Herein,F/N donating fluorinated-amide-based plasticizers regulated polymer electrolyte capable of enabling high-voltage Li||LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2)(NCM811)batteries with excellent performance in wide temperature range is developed.F/N donating fluorinated-amide-based plasticizers significantly improve ionic conductivity(1.52 mS/cm at 30℃),enhance oxidation stability(5.0 V vs.Li^(+)/Li)and fabricate robust LiF/Li_(3)N-rich electrode-electrolyte interphases, which significantly improve the interface stability of Li metal anode and NCM811 cathode. The designed polymer electrolyte is nonflammable and has excellent dimensional stability at 200℃.Capitalizing on these advantageous attributes, the Li||NCM811 cells show excellent cycle stability and rate capability from−20℃ to 60℃ at high voltages(∼4.6 V),and under high-loading full cell condition, which display impressive capacity retention of 84.4%after 1000 cycles and ultrahigh capacity of 154.8 mAh/g at 10 C.This work provides a rational design strategy of polymer electrolytes for wide-temperature high-energy solid-state Li metal batteries. 展开更多

Polyethylene oxide(PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes(SPEs)have long faced limitations due to low ionic conductivity at ambient temperature and poor interfacial stability with lithium metal anodes. Here,we present a structural engineering strategy to address these challenges through shear-induced crystallization of concentrated PEO-LiTFSI solutions, which self-assemble into flower-like spherulites with radially aligned lamellar crystals. This unique structure creates continuous Li^(+)transport highways through densely packed crystalline domains, achieving a record-high ionic conductivity of 1.70×10^(-4) S/cm at 25℃ for pristine PEO-based systems.Strategic incorporation of lithium montmorillonite(MMTli,10 wt%)further optimizes the composite electrolyte, balancing high ionic conductivity(1.47×10^(-4) S/cm)with enhanced electrochemical stability(4.99 V vs.Li^(+)/Li),elevated Li^(+)transference number(0.62),and mechanical robustness. The composite electrolyte enables stable Li plating/stripping over 800 h in symmetric Li||Li cells and powers LiFePO_(4)||Li solid-state batteries with 82%capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.2 C under ambient conditions. This work pioneers a scalable processing paradigm for crystalline polymer electrolytes, offering new insights into ion transport mechanisms and validating clay minerals as multifunctional additives for next-generation energy storage systems. 展开更多

Composite polymer electrolytes(CPEs)offer a promising solution for all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries(ASSLMBs).However, conventional nanofillers with Lewis-acid-base surfaces make limited contribution to improving the overall performance of CPEs due to their difficulty in achieving robust electrochemical and mechanical interfaces simultaneously. Here,by regulating the surface charge characteristics of halloysite nanotube(HNT),we propose a concept of lithium-ion dynamic interface(Li^(+)-DI)engineering in nano-charged CPE(NCCPE).Results show that the surface charge characteristics of HNTs fundamentally change the Li^(+)-DI,and thereof the mechanical and ion-conduction behaviors of the NCCPEs.Particularly, the HNTs with positively charged surface(HNTs+)lead to a higher Li^(+)transference number(0.86)than that of HNTs-(0.73),but a lower toughness(102.13 MJ m^(-3)for HNTs+and 159.69 MJ m^(-3)for HNTs-).Meanwhile,a strong interface compatibilization effect by Li^(+)is observed for especially the HNTs+-involved Li^(+)-DI,which improves the toughness by 2000%compared with the control. Moreover,HNTs+are more effective to weaken the Li^(+)-solvation strength and facilitate the formation of Li F-rich solid-electrolyte interphase of Li metal compared to HNTs-.The resultant Li|NCCPE|LiFePO4cell delivers a capacity of 144.9 m Ah g^(-1)after 400 cycles at 0.5 C and a capacity retention of 78.6%.This study provides deep insights into understanding the roles of surface charges of nanofillers in regulating the mechanical and electrochemical interfaces in ASSLMBs. 展开更多

Solid polymer electrolytes(SPEs)are considered promising candidates for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries because of their easy preparation and good compatibility with lithium metal. However, their applications are restricted by their low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties. In this study,a composite solid polymer electrolyte composed of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO),poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)(PVDF-HFP),plasticizer succinonitrile(SN),and polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)fibrous porous membranes was prepared. The PTFE fibrous membrane significantly enhanced the mechanical strength of the electrolyte as a supporting framework.SN reduced the crystalline regions of PEO and facilitated rapid lithium-ion transport.PVDF-HFP promoted lithium salt dissolution and improved the electrochemical stability of the electrolyte.Accordingly, the optimized PTFE/PEO/PVDF-HFP/SN polymer electrolyte exhibited a tensile strength of 3.31 MPa at 352%elongation and demonstrated an ionic conductivity of 7.6×10^(-4)S·cm^(-1)at 60℃.Lithium symmetric cells maintained stable cycling for over 2500 h at 0.15 m A·cm^(-2),and Li//Li Fe PO_(4) full cells showed a high capacity retention of 91.6%after 300 cycles at 0.5 C,with coulombic efficiency consistently exceeding 99.9%throughout cycling. 展开更多

Succinonitrile(SN)-based polymer plastic crystal electrolytes(PPCEs)are regarded as promising candidates for lithium metal batteries but suffer from serious side reactions with Li metal.Herein,we propose a multi-dimensional optimization strategy to alleviate the side reactions between SN and Li metal, and develop a highly stable poly-vinylethylene carbonate-based PPCE(PPCE-VEC).Moreover,we identify the intrinsic factors of multi-dimensional polymer structures on the electrolyte stability by three typical classes of polyesters. The PPCE-VEC constructed by in situ polymerization exhibits much better stability than poly-vinylene carbonate-based PPCE(PPCE-VCA)and poly-trifluoroethyl acrylate-based PPCE(PPCE-TFA),which is verified by its fewer SN-decomposition species in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and outstanding full cell performance. The PPCE-VEC-enabled LiNi_(0.6)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.2)O_(2)full cell achieve 73.7%capacity retention after 1400 cycles, which outperforms PPCE-VCA-and PPCE-TFA-enabled full cells(61.9%and 46.9%).Spectral analysis and theoretical calculation reveal that the high solvation ability of the carbonyl site, flexible polymer chain, and homogeneous electrolyte phase of PPCE-VEC are favorable to maximizing competition coordination with Li^(+)to weaken the Li^(+)–SN binding and shape an anion-rich solvation structure. This optimized polymer-involved Li^(+)solvation enhances SN stability and facilitates the formation of B/F enriched solid-electrolyte interphase(SEI),thus significantly improving PPCE stability. 展开更多

Acrylonitrile/N-[4-(aminosulfonyl)phenyl]acrylamide (AN/ASPAA) copolymers were synthesized and used as a host of lithium ion conducting electrolytes. The composition, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of AN/ASPAA copolymers were determined, and the influence of copolymer composition on the glass temperature of AN/ASPAA copolymers and the ion conductivity of electrolytes were investigated. The molecular weights of AN/ASPAA copolymers were lower than those of AN and ASPAA homopolymers due to the cross-termination reaction. The glass temperatures of AN/ASPAA copolymers increased as the molar fraction of ASPAA units in copolymers increased. The lithium ion conductivities of the polymer electrolytes increased initially as the molar fraction of ASPAA units in copolymers increased, and a maximum conductivity was achieved when the molar fraction of ASPAA in the copolymer was 16.8%. 展开更多

This work focuses on the development of high temperature polymer electrolyte membranes(HT-PEMs)as key materials for HT-PEM fuel cells(HT-PEMFCs).Recognizing the challenges associated with the phosphoric acid(PA) doped polybenzimidazole(PBI) membranes, including the use of carcinogenic monomers and complex synthesis procedures, this study aims to develop more cost-effective,readily synthesized, and high-performance alternatives.A series of superacid-catalyzed polyhydroxyalkylation reactions have been carefully designed between p-terphenyl and aldehydes bearing imidazole moieties, resulting in a new class of HT-PEMs.It is found that the chemical structure of aldehyde-substituted N-heterocycles significantly impacts the polymerization reaction.Specifically, the use of 1-methyl-2-imidazole-formaldehyde and 1 H-imidazole-4-formaldehyde monomers leads to the formation of high-viscosity,rigid,and ether-free polymers, denoted as PTIm-a and PTIm-b.Membranes fabricated from these polymers, due to their pendent imidazole groups, exhibit an exceptional capacity for PA absorption.Notably,PTIm-a,carrying methylimidazole moieties, demonstrates a superior chemical stability by maintaining morphology and structural stability during 350 h of Fenton testing. After being immersed in 75 wt% PA at 40℃,the PTIm-a membrane reaches a PA content of 152%,maintains a good tensile strength of 13.6 MPa,and exhibits a moderate conductivity of 50.2 mS cm^(-1) at 180℃.Under H_(2)/O_(2) operational conditions,a single cell based on the PTIm-a membrane attains a peak power density of 732 mW cm^(-2) at 180℃ without backpressure.Furthermore, the membrane demonstrates stable cycle stability over 173 h within 18 days at a current density of 200 mA cm^(-2),indicating its potential for practical application in HT-PEMFCs.This work highlights innovative strategies for the synthesis of advanced HT-PEMs,offering significant improvements in membrane properties and fuel cell performance, thus expanding the horizons of HT-PEMFC technology. 展开更多

Liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries suffer from leakage, flammability, and lithium dendrites, making polymer electrolyte a potential alternative.Herein,a series of ABA triblock copolymers(ABA-x)containing a mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer(MJLCP)with a polynorbornene backbone as segment A and a second polynorbornene-based polymer having poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)side chains as segment B were synthesized through tandem ring-opening metathesis polymerizations. The block copolymers can self-assemble into ordered morphologies at 200℃.After doping of lithium salts and ionic liquid(IL),ABA-x self-assembles into cylindrical structures. The MJLCP segments with a high glass transition temperature and a stable liquid crystalline phase serve as physical crosslinking points, which significantly improve the mechanical performance of the polymer electrolytes. The ionic conductivity of ABA-x/lithium salt/IL is as high as 10-3 S·cm-1 at ambient temperature owing to the high IL uptake and the continuous phase of conducting PEO domains. The relationship between ionic conductivity and temperature fits the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher(VTF)equation.In addition, the electrolyte films are flame retardant owing to the addition of IL.The polymer electrolytes with good safety and high ambient-temperature ionic conductivity developed in this work are potentially useful in solid lithium-ion batteries. 展开更多

Acid loss and plasticization of phosphoric acid(PA)-doped high-temperature polymer electrolyte membranes(HT-PEMs)are critical limitations to their practical application in fuel cells. To overcome these barriers, poly(terphenyl piperidinium)s constructed from the m-and p-isomers of terphenyl were synthesized to regulate the microstructure of the membrane.Highly rigid p-terphenyl units prompt the formation of moderate PA aggregates, where the ion-pair interaction between piperidinium and biphosphate is reinforced, leading to a reduction in the plasticizing effect. As a result, there are trade-offs between the proton conductivity, mechanical strength, and PA retention of the membranes with varied m/p-isomer ratios. The designed PA-doped PTP-20m membrane exhibits superior ionic conductivity, good mechanical strength, and excellent PA retention over a wide range of temperature(80–160°C)as well as satisfactory resistance to harsh accelerated aging tests. As a result, the membrane presents a desirable combination of performance(1.462 W cm^(-2) under the H_(2)/O_(2)condition,which is 1.5 times higher than that of PBI-based membrane)and durability(300 h at 160°C and 0.2 A cm^(-2))in the fuel cell. The results of this study provide new insights that will guide molecular design from the perspective of microstructure to improve the performance and robustness of HT-PEMs. 展开更多

In-situ polymer electrolytes prepared by Li salt-initiated polymerization are promising electrolytes for solid-state Li metal batteries owing to their enhanced interface contact and facile and green preparation process. However, conventional in-situ polymer electrolytes suffer from poor interface stability, low mechanical strength, low oxidation stability, and certain flammability.Herein,a silsesquioxane(POSS)-nanocage-crosslinked in-situ polymer electrolyte(POSS-DOL@PI-F)regulated by fluorinated plasticizer and enhanced by polyimide skeleton is fabricated by Li salt initiated in-situ polymerization.Polyimide skeleton and POSS-nanocage-crosslinked network significantly enhance the tensile strength(22.8 MPa)and thermal stability(200℃)of POSS-DOL@PI-F.Fluorinated plasticizer improves ionic conductivity(6.83×10^(-4)S cm^(-1)),flame retardance, and oxidation stability(5.0 V)of POSS-DOL@PI-F.The fluorinated plasticizer of POSS-DOL@PI-F constructs robust LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphases and cathode electrolyte interphases, thereby dramatically enhancing the interface stability of Li metal anodes and LiNi_(0.8)Mn_(0.1)Co_(0.1)O_(2)(NCM811)cathodes.POSS-DOL@PI-F enables stable,long-term(1200 h),and dendrite-free cycle of Li‖Li cells.POSS-DOL@PI-F significantly boosts the performance of Li‖NCM811cells,which display superior cycle stability under harsh conditions of high voltage(4.5 V),high temperature(60℃),low temperature(-20℃),and high areal capacity. This work provides a rational design strategy for safe and efficient polymer electrolytes. 展开更多

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) provide an appealing sustainable energy system, with the solid-electrolyte membrane playing a crucial role in its overall performance.Currently, sulfonated poly(1,4-phenylene ether-ether sulfone)(SPEES),an aromatic hydrocarbon polymer, has garnered considerable attention as an alternative to Nafion polymers. However, the long-term durability and stability of SPEES present a significant challenge. In this context,we introduce a potential solution in the form of an additive, specifically a core–shell-based amine-functionalized iron titanate (A–Fe_(2)TiO_(5)),which holds promise for improving the lifetime, proton conductivity, and power density of SPEES in PEMFCs.The modified SPEES/A–Fe_(2)TiO_(5)composite membranes exhibited notable characteristics, including high water uptake, enhanced thermomechanical stability, and oxidative stability.Notably, the SPEES membrane loaded with 1.2 wt%of A–Fe_(2)TiO_(5)demonstrates a maximum proton conductivity of 155 mS ccm^(-1),a twofold increase compared to the SPEES membrane,at 80°C under 100%relative humidity (RH).Furthermore, the 1.2 wt%of A–Fe_(2)TiO_(5)/SPEES composite membranes exhibited a maximum power density of 397.37 mW cm^(-2)and a current density of 1148 mA cm^(-2)at 60°C under 100%RH,with an opencircuit voltage decay of 0.05 m V/h during 103 h of continuous operation. This study offers significant insights into the development and understanding of innovative SPEES nanocomposite membranes for PEMFC applications. 展开更多

Solvation structures fundamentally control the ion-transport dynamics and mechanical properties of polymer electrolytes. However, there is a lack of strategies to rationally regulate the solvation structures and fundamental understanding on how they control the electrochemical performances.Herein,by harnessing the electrostatic adsorption of one-dimensional nanofiller(i.e.,surface-charged halloysite nanotubes,d-HNTs),we successfully fabricate a high-performance polymer nanocomposite electrolyte enabled by strong surface adsorption, referred as adsorption-state polymer electrolyte(ASPE).This ASPE shows fast ion transport(0.71±0.05 mS cm^(-1)at room temperature),high mechanical strength and toughness(10.3±0.05 MPa;15.73 MJ m^(-3)),improved lithium-ion transference number, and long cycle life with lithium metal anode,in comparison with the sample without the d-HNT adsorption effect. To fundamentally understand these high performances,an anion-rich asymmetric solvent structure model is further proposed and evidenced by both experiments and simulation studies. Results show that the electrostatic adsorption among the d-HNT,ionic liquid electrolyte, and polymer chain generates a nano filler-supported fast ion-conduction pathway with asymmetric Li+-coordination microenvironment.Meanwhile, the anion-rich asymmetric solvent structure model of ASPE also generates a fast de-solvation and anion-derived stable solid-electrolyte interphase for lithium metal anode. The high performance and understanding of the mechanism for ASPE provide a promising path to develop advanced polymer electrolytes. 展开更多

A critical challenge hindering the practical application of lithium–oxygen batteries(LOBs)is the inevitable problems associated with liquid electrolytes, such as evaporation and safety problems. Our study addresses these problems by proposing a modified polyrotaxane(mPR)-based solid polymer electrolyte(SPE)design that simultaneously mitigates solvent-related problems and improves conductivity.mPR-SPE exhibits high ion conductivity(2.8×10^(−3)S cm^(−1)at 25℃)through aligned ion conduction pathways and provides electrode protection ability through hydrophobic chain dispersion.Integrating this mPR-SPE into solid-state LOBs resulted in stable potentials over 300 cycles. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals the presence of an LiO_(2)intermediate alongside Li_(2)O_(2)during oxygen reactions.Ex situ X-ray diffraction confirm the ability of the SPE to hinder the permeation of oxygen and moisture,as demonstrated by the air permeability tests. The present study suggests that maintaining a low residual solvent while achieving high ionic conductivity is crucial for restricting the sub-reactions of solid-state LOBs. 展开更多

High-performance lithium metal batteries benefit from the construction of composite polymer electrolytes(CPEs)which are synthesized by incorporating inorganic fillers into polymer matrices[1].However,the random distribution of added fillers within the polymer matrix can lead to tortuous ion pathways and longer transmission distances(Fig.1).As a result, the ion transport capability of CPEs may decrease, while interface contact may deteriorate. Therefore, the organized arrangement of fillers emerges as a crucial consideration in constructing electrolyte membranes. One highly effective approach is the adoption of a vertically aligned filler configuration, where ceramic fillers are constructed to be perpendicular to the electrolyte membrane. If so,the filler/electrolyte interface impedance can be significantly reduced, while continuous ion transport channels along the specified direction are formed, thus significantly enhancing the ion conduction(Fig.1(a))[1]. 展开更多

Compared to currently commercialized lithium-ion batteries, which use flammable organic liquid electrolytes and low-energy-density graphite anodes,solid-state lithium-metal batteries(SSLMBs)offer enhanced energy density and improved safety, making them promising alternatives for next-generation rechargeable batteries[1].As a crucial component of these batteries,solid-state electrolytes—divided into inorganic solid ceramic electrolytes(SCEs)and organic solid polymer electrolytes(SPEs)—are vital for lithium-ion transport and inhibiting lithium dendrite growth.Among them,SCEs exhibit high ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, and outstanding electrochemical and thermal stability.Nevertheless, their brittleness, interfacial challenges with electrodes, and the requirement for high stacking pressure during battery operation significantly hinder their scalable application. In comparison,SPEs are more favourable for manufacturing due to their flexibility and good interfacial compatibility with electrodes[2].Despite these advantages,SPEs still face significant challenges in achieving practical application.Firstly, typical SPEs,such as poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO),poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF),and poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate(PEGDA),are characterized by high crystallinity, which causes polymer chains to be tightly packed and rigid. This restricts the segmental motion within the SPEs,resulting in low ionic conductivity.Secondly, compared to lithium ions, anions with large ionic radii and low charge density typically form weaker interactions with the polymer chains, which facilitates their mobility and results in a low lithium-ion transference number(tt).Thirdly, the weak interactions between polymer chains in typical SPEs lead to a low elastic modulus, which in turn compromises their poor mechanical strength. 展开更多

Atomically dispersed Cu-based single-metal-site catalysts(Cu-N-C)have emerged as a frontier for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reactions(ORR)because they can effectively optimize the D-band center of the Cu active site and provide appropriate adsorption/desorption energy for oxygen-containing intermediates.Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)show excellent prospects in many fields because of their structural regularity and designability, but their direct use for electrocatalysis has been rarely reported due to the low intrinsic conductivity. Here,a MOF material(Cu-TCNQ)with highly regular single-atom copper active centers was successfully prepared using a solution chemical reaction method.Subsequently,Cu-TCNQ and graphene oxide(GO)were directly self-assembled to form a Cu-TCNQ/GO composite, which improved the conductivity of the catalyst while maintained the atomically precise controllability. The resistivity of the Cu-TCNQ/GO decreased by three orders of magnitude(1663.6-2.7 W/cm)compared with pure Cu-TCNQ.The half-wave potential was as high as 0.92 V in 0.1 mol/L KOH,even better than that of commercial 20%Pt/C.In alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells(APEFCs),the open-circuit voltage and power density of Cu-TCNQ/GO electrode reached 0.95 V and 320 m W/cm^(2),respectively,which suggests that Cu-TCNQ/GO has a good potential for application as a cathode ORR catalyst. 展开更多

Fluoropolymers promise all-solid-state lithium metal batteries(ASLMBs)but suffer from two critical challenges. The first is the trade-off between ionic conductivity(σ)and lithium anode reactions, closely related to high-content residual solvents. The second, usually consciously overlooked,is the fluoropolymer's inherent instability against alkaline lithium anodes. Here,we propose indium-based metal-organic frameworks(In-MOFs)as a multifunctional promoter to simultaneously address these two challenges, using poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene)(PVH)as the typical fluoropolymer.In-MOF plays a trio:(1)adsorbing and converting free residual solvents into bonded states to prevent their side reactions with lithium anodes while retaining their advantages on Li~+transport;(2)forming inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase layers to prevent PVH from reacting with lithium anodes and promote uniform lithium deposition without dendrite growth;(3)reducing PVH crystallinity and promoting Li-salt dissociation. Therefore, the resulting PVH/In-MOF(PVH-IM)showcases excellent electrochemical stability against lithium anodes, delivering a 5550 h cycling at 0.2 m A cm^(-2)with a remarkable cumulative lithium deposition capacity of 1110 m Ah cm^(-2).It also exhibits an ultrahighσof 1.23×10^(-3)S cm^(-1)at 25℃.Moreover,all-solid-state LiFePO_4|PVH-IM|Li full cells show outstanding rate capability and cyclability(80.0%capacity retention after 280 cycles at 0.5C),demonstrating high potential for practical ASLMBs. 展开更多

Zinc metal batteries(ZMBs)are considered to be promising energy storage devices in the field of largescale energy storage due to the advantages of high energy density, good safety and environmental friendliness. However, the commercialization of ZMBs has been hampered because of the problems caused by aqueous electrolytes, such as hydrogen evolution reaction, electrolyte leakage, and water evaporation.Gel polymer electrolytes(GPEs)have attracted extensive attention due to the features of high security and low water content. However, the disadvantages of poor ion transport rate, easily freezing at low temperature and low mechanical strength are not conducive to the rapid development and practical application of ZMBs.The rational design and fabrication of multifunctional polymer-based frameworks are considered to be effective strategy to obtain high-performance GPEs.In this review, the recent advancements of GPEs with various polymers are generalized. The strategies for the improvement of ionic conductivity, low temperature resistance and mechanical strength of these GPEs,such as adding inorganic fillers, building double cross-linked networks and introducing functional groups, are summarized. The effects of the GPEs on the self-healable ability, inhibiting dendrite growth, and cycling stability of the ZMBs are also discussed. Finally, the key problems and development prospects of GPEs are proposed, which will provide possibility for the further development of GPEs. 展开更多
