The Contemporary Depiction of Han-shan and Shi-de in the Japanese Picture Book Kanzan and Jittoku

The Han-shan and Shi-de story,which spread to Japan around the 11th century,has given rise to many literary works in later times.The Japanese picture book Kanzan and Jittoku by Nagamatsu Yōko and Komai Keiko is a good example.However,the picture book,which serves as a window on the cultural resonance of the Han-shan and Shi-de story,has not received enough attention from researchers,compared with other forms of rewriting such as poetry,drama,or short stories.This article investigates the representation of Han-shan and Shi-de in the picture book,and examines how the authors have incorporated the preceding texts as raw material for their own.It is found that the transformation of Han-shan and Shi-de in the picture book stems from the authors’selective use of the preceding texts and their unique interpretation.LüQiuyin’s preface,Hakuin’s comments on Han-shan,as well as the authors’knowledge and experience are vital in shaping the characters. 展开更多

Cleft palate is a common congenital malformation of the maxillofacial region,and its postoperative speech disorders(such as hypernasality,nasal emission,and articulation errors)can significantly impact patients’communication abilities and psychological well-being.Traditional speech-language therapy faces challenges such as insufficient personalization of training methods,limited scenarios,and low patient compliance,making it inadequate for long-term rehabilitation needs.The innovative intervention model of a mobile interactive platform combined with games and picture books,through immersive experiences,instant feedback,and engaging designs,holds promise for enhancing patient participation and overall treatment outcomes.Therefore,this paper provides a comprehensive review from five perspectives:the pathological mechanisms and treatment needs of cleft palate speech disorders,the advantages of games and picture books as carriers in cleft palate speech therapy,the technological implementation of mobile interactive platforms,clinical application effects,and current challenges and limitations.The aim is to offer valuable insights for clinical practice and technological development in cleft palate speech rehabilitation. 展开更多

Action Research on the Integration of Primary English Picture Book and Textbook from the Perspective of “Five Education Simultaneously”

“Five education”is pivotal for students’all-round development.However,primary English teaching currently faces challenges including the superficial implementation of“Five education”.This study employed action res... “Five education”is pivotal for students’all-round development.However,primary English teaching currently faces challenges including the superficial implementation of“Five education”.This study employed action research to explore practical methods for integrating English picture book with textbook to implement“Five education”.Through two rounds of iterative action research,a three-stage activity-based teaching path was developed and refined,enabling the progressive infusion of“Five education”objectives across the learning cycle.Findings demonstrated that this integrated approach-particularly when supported by strategies such as picture book background videos and audio-edited narrative connections-effectively deepened the implementation of“Five education”,mitigated student reading fatigue,and significantly improved students’reading fluency and labor initiative,thus provided a replicable practical paradigm for realizing“Five education simultaneously”. 展开更多

Talking with Children about Cancer: A Content Analysis of Text in Children’s Picture Books

Introduction: To tell children that they are diagnosed with cancer is challenging for any healthcare professional and family. Pictures books are one of the communication tools for talking with children about severe diseases. However, little research is available about the contents of picture books about cancer for children. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the contents of children’s picture books about cancer and explore the advantages and disadvantages of using picture books to communicate with children about cancer. Methods: We searched the picture books about cancer written for children aged under ten years old on the Amazon.com Web site on 5 July 2019 and hand-searched on the cancer-related institutes’ Web site. We extracted the texts of relevant picture books and conducted a content analysis of them. Results: We identified 2555 picture books and included 30 of them. We identified three main contents, 1) cancer-related knowledge, 2) impacts of cancer, and 3) dealing with cancer. These contents were written with simple words and illustrations. Some of them included the essential contents, which might be misunderstood by children. Conclusions: Picture books might be helpful for children to understand about cancer. However, as these books do not include all contents, it is necessary to select and use multiple books depending on the content which is wanted to tell the child. Further research should evaluate the impacts of these books as a communication tool when talking with children diagnosed with cancer. 展开更多

This study utilizes how to create engaging imagery from the book How to Be a Children’s Book Illustrator to analyze Baek’s picture books.
